Varsity: Monarchs 57, Thunder 48

Tough loss for our young team. We basically had the same lineup as last night (close win over Kalani), but Damien pulled away in the final 6 minutes or so. They started out in a 2-3 zone, which we liked. Then they switched to man defense, which I expected us to like better. But it came down to execution, and we didn't get enough points inside and missed a horrific number of free throws.

We didn't use the bench quite as much as we did yesterday. It was a tough choice because Damien had a size advantage on us inside with two tall kids. Can't help thinking, second-guessing about that. Even when we're small against a tall team that goes man-to-man, we can run some plays to get open space for our penetrators.

Kapili King did a lot of damage against us in the first half. He's about 6-4 or 6-5 and stronger now than he was during the varsity season when he was still a freshman.

We got a lot of minutes out of our starters, but it was a lot to ask of our guys, especially Isaiah Visoria and Haka Iamhaka Johnson. Isaiah's leg was still sore (bruise) and Haka has endured long football workouts every day before our games. They both played well, though. Isaiah was on a roll for awhile in the first half.

Tone Lauvao and Sisifo Lauvao are tired enough from football that they missed the last two games.) Mick Colling made it to the game; he played before our game with Roosevelt. Kyle Moragaplayed decent, but I think the long stretch of multiple games has its good and bad side. We have great chemistry most nights, but some nights, we're not that tall and we're a little fatigued.

We didn't run the floor against them as well as we have in other games. That's some tired legs.

We finished 4-4 in the Kalani Varsity Summer League. Competitive in every game.

Next: 4th of July (Thursday) - shooting practice 4:00 pm, Makiki Park. It's for the guys who asked for it (and don't have other plans). Like me and Jared Elwin.

The guys who want to go to the swimming pool at Coach Bo & Auntie Char's building, let me know early. I'm dropping off Felcris Jay Corpuz, Joshua de Jesus at 11:00 am.

Also: Thunder 13U vs. Sharks2, Friday, 7:10 pm, Kilauea gym
Also: Thunder 18U vs. Team Central Kauai, Friday, 8:00 pm, Aiea gym
