13U: H1 Thunder 52, Imperial Valley All-Stars (Calif.) 41

LAS VEGAS — Another strong team effort for our Thunder from start to finish. We went to the bench early and kept rotating often.

The air in Heinrich YMCA Community Center is especially unique: dry and warm. Even though it's somewhat air-conditioned. That forced us to get guys in quicker than usual, and our reserves were prepared. IV stayed with us for most of the way before we pulled away late in the game with smart plays from our veterans. Guys played gutsy defense all night.

The one bad piece of news: we found out tonight that the tournament decided to include only pool winners in its championship bracket. Until today, the schedule had shown the top two teams in each pool — we were second in ours — as qualifiers. Instead, I had to break the news to our team after the win after seeing "Consolation" in tomorrow's schedule involving us.

Why did they do another switcheroo? The tournament director is never around to explain; there are games at multiple gyms. But the guy handling the schedule explained this to me: the tourney expected 80 or 90 teams. Instead, 130 showed up. So despite all the gyms that they are using in the city, there isn't enough gym time to give each team five games for the weekend.

In other words, second-place teams got booted to consolation play. We are one of them. It sucks, but that's how it goes. We had a 7-point lead on LA Valley on the first night, then lost. Now LA Valley Hoops is in the championship game and we're playing for fifth place. We just wanted one more shot at LA Valley. Not saying we'd beat them, but after solid wins over South Coast (Calif.) and Imperial Valley (Calif.) today, our boys have adjusted to the type of officiating they have in these tournaments. They've gotten used to all this heat in the 90s and 100s.

But overall, the boys are having a good time. Bowling this morning. Playing cards whenever there's free time. I know they're gonna miss the kids who are leaving after this weekend. Then we drive to Anaheim for another adventure.

Mahalo to all our Thunder supporters who helped make this trip happen. We're still selling T-shirts, including our super cool new ones (by James Davis).

Next: 13U vs. Crossover (Calif.), 3:00 pm (Pacific time), Heinrich YMCA Community Center.

Also: 13U vs. Vegas Elite Gold (Nevada), 6:00 pm (Pacific time), Heinrich YMCA Community Center. This exhibition game is not confirmed yet. We'll find out tomorrow.

WE LUB THIS GAME!
