H1 Thunder 47, Hawaii Storm 40 (V)

Kalani Varsity League
Team win all the way for our Thunder tonight. The Storm were short-handed with a bunch of their younger guys at a JV league game (McKinley), but as always they played disciplined basketball. We did a fairly good job containing their 3-point shooters, including that kid Cameron (#10) who hurt us while playing for Kamehameha two nights ago. Kapaa and Michael did a solid job making him work hard, especially in the second half.

We got more flow offensively tonight, good patience against a packed-in 2-3 zone. Our rhinos, Kali‘a and Radyn, worked very well out of our double high-post set. Sierra shot well from 3-point land — again. Kapaa hit a few treys, too, but this time it was within the flow of the offense thanks to good ball movement by teammates. Any time we get the defense rotating and shifting out of the paint, we're in good shape on the boards. That is key.

Our quick group did a great job on our press in the second half, forcing a 10-second violation and really taking control with defensive intensity. It's really nice, a luxury to have this kind of depth and versatility. It was the right time to unleash the press and the quick group was stellar in it.

Playing solid teams in a league like this means turnovers are more harmful than usual, and lax defense is dangerously self-destructive. We got good team defense and ball security most of the game. This was a team win earned by our guys (and Sierra) on the floor. We play like this every time, we go very far.

Lineup: Keanu, Tani Mosi, Michael, Sierra, Jonah, Jance, Chase,
Kapaa, Kali'a, Colin, Tenchi, Radyn.
