Saturday Update

Life is hard without our coaches. Bo, Larry and John all had to work this morning. That meant I had to fill in at this morning's 14U game at Aiea's tournament. We were missing a handful of our regular players, so we had more new players like Tanielu (Chris' brother), Jenna and Jet. We fell behind early, made it a better game in the second half and lost to the Sharks. (We lost by about 15 or 18.)

From there, I collected jerseys and swung over to Maryknoll JV League, where our guys were waiting patiently for someone to bring uniforms. There was a fender bender on the freeway so I was really stressing, but it cleared up and I made it to Maryknoll with a few minutes to spare.

Turned out McKinley thought the game with us was at 5 pm, so they didn't show up. Instead, we played Maryknoll, which had just finished regularly-scheduled game. Our guys included Roosevelt and Maryknoll players, plus Keanu and Haka. The Kaimuki guys had a varsity league game and didn't play with us. We won this game 52-35. We had some fairly decent execution, but the inconsistent focus and defensive pressure was annoying. We were better defensively in the last 20 minutes than the first 10.

Now our 14U at Aiea will play the Aliis at 2:15 pm. So many new faces, it's not realistic to expect flawless execution with a team that has barely played together. My goal for the rest of the tourney is for them to play hard, have fun and learn along the way. We did look much better against the Sharks after we started pressing.

I lub this game!
