But seriously, we did pretty good with only 7 players, including two new ones: Kodee Viena and Chris Afealaivanu. Post-game: Wendy's Aiea. Back on the court in the morning, 9:45 am against Kupa‘a, then 2:15 pm vs Aliis.
Meanwhile, our older Thunder played Kamehameha and won 47-35 against Kamehameha in the Maryknoll JV League. Coach Bo is NOT happy. Told me our guys were sloppy, not playing smart, taking crazy shots, especially in the last 2 minutes.
Next game for them is Saturday (tomorrow), 11:00 am against McKinley, which has Yong and Wilson. Interesting, ah?
The afternoon started out kind of frazzled. By the time I got to Makiki Park, I learned that Jared wouldn't be available. Also heard Jerson was gone camping, but he showed up at the park and I dropped him off at his campsite (where his folks were) after the game. With Micah and Walter also unavailable and Jaren again not showing up, suddenly our roster was in shambles (for Friday). But two kids shooting baskets at the park seemed to be having a good time. I asked if they wanted to play with us and they both said yes.

Edison's mom said no, however, so he didn't come with us. Chris' parents were supportive, and that's how we ended up with seven players instead of just six.
Also, Chris didn't have shoes, so we made a trip to Sports Authority. He wears 12, he says, but he didn't realize he doesn't fit 12s anymore. He tried a pair of 13s, a little snug. The 14s were too big. He's 11, just finished fifth grade at Kaahumanu Elem School. But I like him because he's so observant and patient. True gentle giant.
On the way to the tournament, it got a little stressful. I thought I read that we played at 6:45 pm in the Aiea tourney. Sifo's dad, Loto, called me from the gym as we made our way there. He said we were scheduled for 6:00. I thought that was a misprint or something. We were on Red Hill when Loto called again and said we were definitely playing at 6:00 and that the grace period (5 minutes) had started. Fortunately, the tourney officials let us start without everyone in full uniform.
The kids are so resilient. Despite my mistake and the lack of pre-game warmups for some of them, we jumped to a 9-0 lead. Now we build on a great start with such a young team: Kodee (11), Chris (11), Jerson (12), Paul (12), Sifo (13), Brent (14) and Sean (14).
All in all, good day. Thank God for basketball.
