H1 Thunder 40, Maryknoll II 36 (V)

Kalani Varsity League
Good battle against one of my favorite people in the world, Spartans D-II coach Richard Miyasaka. His guys hustled and made a run in the final few minutes to make it close. We played well in spurts, but made good and bad decisions that were uncharacteristic, and some of that was due to Maryknoll II's great defensive hustle late in the game.

Radyn iced the win with free throws down the stretch. Kapaa hit some big FTs too. Chase continues to play some of his best basketball in the past few games, so balanced and versatile. Aggressive without being too greedy on offense and defense. His transition game and CONTROL of speed were terrific during a run we had in the first half.

We're 5-1 in Kalani League now, playing good enough to win, but not a dominant team. Yet. We're getting there bit by bit and I hope today's game helps us get smarter in the future. When the humidity and heat are horrible, IQ and teamwork are more important than ever. Tenchi had back-to-back games last night and then came to this game immediately after a practice at school. But he persevered and so did the entire team. Way to hang in there, Thunder.

Lineup: Sierra, Tenchi, Jance, Kapaa, Radyn, Kali'a, Felcris, Chase,

Next: Wednesday, 6:00 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Hawaii Baptist, Le Jardin League.
Wednesday, 7:10 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Hoops4Christ, CAL 13U Gold, Kilauea gym.
I'll be at Le Jardin and hopefully we have enough players since most of our reserves will be busy at other practices or at the CAL 13U game. Coach Bino and Coach Larry will be at the 13U game.
WE LUB THIS GAAAME!!

Unsold Tickets - Turn them in

If you have extra tickets and have no orders in the future, please turn the tickets in to me. All 400 tickets have been distributed, but we have several parents who need more. I also have orders and no tickets. After being in touch with Jimmy, it's unlikely that we'll be able to re-order more tickets at this point.

(Note: Forgot to mention when I posted this that if you've finished selling all huli chicken tickets, we need to submit all ticket revenue money as soon as possible. All of us will be busy enough on Sunday at Rainbows with sign-holding on Kapahulu Ave. or bagging chickens, and for the parents/players who might not make it, turn in the funds today or tomorrow so we have ALL ticket money to Jimmy without delay on Sunday. Mahalo!)

SO PLEASE CALL/TEXT ME 551-1054 and I'll come pick up your unsold tickets tonight (Tue) or Wednesday morning or afternoon or evening. Time is getting short, so let's move quickly and wisely. Maximize this great opportunity. It's going really well so far, but the real proof will be when we collect all ticket sales revenue on or before Sunday at Rainbow Drive-In (pickup day).

H1 Thunder 37, Kailua 35 (JV)

Le Jardin League
A lot of ups and downs, good plays and rushed shots, great defense and clutch plays. Radyn's 5-footer in the paint with .4 of 1 second left won it for us. Kailua missed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer.

This was one of the most challenging situations we've had this year. Again, we weren't deep. All our subs were intermediate Thunder, all guards. That meant a lot of minutes for our rebounders. Then we had an off-night shooting from the perimeter and the officiating was wildly inconsistent. It was the worst we've had in roughly 80 games since November.

Kailua played a tough game and hit a lot of clutch shots. They also hacked us, poked us, pulled us all over the court and got away with it most of the time. Meanwhile, touch fouls were being called against us, especially Tenchi. It was tough for our guys to keep focused in those final 2 minutes with the game going back and forth, taking all kinds of fouls and no whistles being blown. But they were able to keep their poise and finish strong.

I'm not sure whether both officials were simply blind to the six or so traveling violations by Kailua that were not called. I'm not sure if Afton Smith's affiliation with the school — he coached the girls varsity team for a long, long time — made him biased in his non-calls. Who knows? I do know that both officials were in training at ‘Iolani's girls basketball summer league, and that in this JV game, they were not a good pairing at all.

I'm just glad we got out of it without losing our heads, that I didn't get a technical foul that would've cost us a chance to win. I'm thankful for all these things. A good win in the weirdest way. Hopefully, the $500 we spent on the entry fee and all the miles of driving by our parents will be worthwhile. As I said to one of the officials in the second half, what they did not or refused to see on the court will be available on video, and the camera does not lie.

To be fair, the officiating in this league has been quite good until this game. What separates the elite leagues from the mediocre leagues is, first and foremost, quality control.

For us, all we can do is focus on what we can control. We were tested by adversity and, apparently, we passed. Moving on.

Lineup: Jance, Tenchi, Josh R, Jonah, Radyn, Chase, Tani Mosi, Sierra.

Big mahalo to Eric for shooting game video again!

Next: Tuesday, 3:30 pm - Stretching/warmups at Kalani HS gym. 4:30 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Maryknoll II (Kalani Varsity League).

Player Budget update 6/28

First, big mahalos to Coach Bo for bringing water and providing big help on the first shift. Big mahalo to Nathan and Joel for bringing brand-new signs. The signs are a necessity and theirs were real nice.

Sunday at Pearl City (Kamehameha Hwy) was much different compared to Castle Junction.

> Traffic jam. It got worse as the day went on. Were people just too grouchy to give? Maybe, but having just 3 Thunder for the second shift was a definite factor. They worked hard, but just couldn't cover enough ground, and two of them were tired from the early shift.

> Commuters vs. area residents. In Kailua, it was mostly folks from the area, just going to the beach, heading to town, etc. At Kam Hwy, it was mostly folks leaving town and headed to the Leeward side, not really Pearl City residents — were a long way from any homes in the district. Sierra's team was there a few weeks ago but they had 10 players fish netting. Big difference.

Overall, still a plus day for the guys who made it. They put another good dent into their travel budgets.

Fish Net Pearl City (Kam Hwy)

Sunday, June 28, 2015, 9:00 am-2:00 pm

Players, first shift (9:00-11:30 am): Tani, Chaz, Felcris, Jance, Ryan.

Adults: Bo, Nathan, Jason, Yolie, Coach Paul.

Revenue: $368
(Not counting coins)

Expenses: $29 (per shift)
Note: Total expenses $58
> Breakfast (McDonald's take out) = $25
> Bottled water, bananas (Foodland) = $25
> Ice = $8
(doesn't include Joel, reimburse 1 bag)

Net profit (first shift): $339
$339 / 5 Thunder players = $67.80 credited to each player's Travel Budget for 2015-16.

* * *

Players, second shift (11:30 am-2:00 pm): Jonah, Tani, Felcris.

Adults: Joel, Coach Paul.

Revenue: $120
(not counting coins)

Expenses: $29 (per shift)

Net profit (second shift): $91

$91 / 3 Thunder players = $30.33 credited to each player's Player Budget for 2015-16.

Note: The low turnout had a big effect on a hot, humid day. First shift pretty good with 5 players. Second shift was tired (except Jonah, who arrived at mid-day) and we had just three guys total. Need 10 players to really make a full impact. We will rarely go to a full day with shifts from now on — only at locations that are extremely busy and profitable for extended hours.

# # #

Player Budgets as of 6/28/15
(alphabetical order)
Tanielu Afe $135.83 + 67.80 + 30.33 = $233.96
Felcris Ahadain $135.83 + 67.80 + 30.33 = $233.96
Jance Apuya $135.83 + 67.80 = $203.63
Chaz Enos $135.83 + 67.80 = $203.63
Jonah Gormley $135.83 + $30.33 = $166.16
Ryan Higashionna $135.83 + 67.80 = $203.63

Huli Chicken Tickets - update 6/29

If you are not selling your tickets, please 1) get rolling on that and crank out the phone calls, texts, etc. Sale day (July 5) is coming soon. Or 2) return what you aren't going to sell immediately so other players and parents can sell more.

The first option is better for you as a player, of course. The money you turn in will be credited to your Player Budget (for travel, uniforms, league/tourney fees, etc.). I expect all money to be returned plus unsold tickets.

By today or tomorrow (Tue), I will probably order more tickets after distributing all 400. Some of our parents are doing an amazing job of getting orders and selling the tickets. People know how good the huli chicken is at Rainbows.

Call/text me 551-1054 if you have questions and/or want to order more tix.
Please keep in mind we will man the pickup table at Rainbows on Sunday, July 5 from 10 am to 3 pm (or beyond). Please contact me to sign up for a 1-hour shift to help with bagging the half chickens. We will probably be chopping the chickens into halves, as well. All knives, etc. to be provided by Jimmy (Rainbow Drive-In).

Every Day We're Hustlin'

Felcris, Ryan, Jance, Chaz and Tani hard at work this morning with help from Jason, Yolie, Narhan and Coach Bo.

If more guys arrive for the next shift, we can reach more cars. Because of slow traffic people are sitting there and we're doing decent so far.
MAUI HERE WE COME!!

The second shift was rough and tough, the heat and humidity testing the first-shift guys who stayed (Tani and Felcris). Chaz was worn out after two hot days. Ryan went to clinic and Jance's family hit the beach.

Fortunately, Jonah and his dad, Joel, re-energized us and we stayed until 2:00 pm.

Overall, the morning shift was more fortunate, but Jonah really worked his tail off despite a challenging traffic jam. Unlike Saturday's fish net, this crowd was quite stingy past 12:00 pm, grumpy from the long, long traffic jam.

Or maybe it's just that Windward side folks are more willing to give. Who knows?

Big thumbs up to the guys today. It took a lot of mental toughness to get up early, especially after a hot afternoon the day before, and get back to something that is tiring, humbling and not easy at all.

Chunk by chunk, Thunder are making their way to Maui and beyond. Good work, Thunder!

Early bird gets the worm

Double shift is on for Sunday at Pearl City. We want to secure the spot early in the day.

Shift 1: 9:00 to 11:30 am
Shift 2: 11:30 am to 2:00 pm

Note: If the 2nd shift is shorthanded (less than 6 players), guys from the 1st shift can jump in. Ideally, we would have 10 players working the intersection with 6 adults. More players means more coverage during red lights and more donations.

1st shift commits: Ryan, Felcris, Chaz, Tani Mosi.
Adults: Nathan, Bo, Coach Paul.

Meet at Home Depot Pearl City parking lot by 8:30 am. Bring a cooler and ice if possible. Carry ice-cold bottled water (I'm bringing a few cases) and give one to each donor who gives at least $10.
We definitely could use more signs. Jance's sister made two awesome ones today. Good chance we'll be working more than two directions tomorrow.
WORK HARD, PLAY HARD!

H1 Thunder 45, Lanakila Baptist 21 (JV)

Le Jardin League
Some fatigue In our 5th game this week (counting 13U). Good defense and decent fast break work though we gave away at least 14 to 20 points on bad decisions or missed layups.

To be expected after a busy week of games. To be expected after a busy week of games. The biggest cheer - from both teams' fans - came when Chaz swished a 3 from the top in the second half.

Now we're gearing up for fish netting at castle junction. 5 Thunder strong for the next 3 hours. Play time is almost pau.

Lineup: Jhevin, Jance, Chaz, Felcris, Josh R, Tenchi, Radyn, Tani Mosi,Chase, Jonah.

Players Budget update 6/27/15

Players Budget for travel costs, league fees, uniforms
6/27/15

Great day for H1 Thunder fundraising. Though it wasn't the biggest fundraiser we've had (record is $2,000 in the 2014 Free-Throw Challenge), it was the most efficient, quick and simple way to make pure profit without any serious overhead costs.

No $400 rental at McCully Union for car wash. I don't miss that.

Along with our huli chicken ticket sales, we have really solid, awesome opportunities to earn and save up what we can, one nice chunk at a time.

Fish Net Kailua (Castle Junction)
Saturday, June 27, 2015, 1:00-4:00 pm

Players: Felcris, Jance, Chaz, Tani, Jonah, Ryan.

Adults/Helpers: Jason Apuya, Joel Gormley, Chelsea Gormley, Nathan Higashionna, Coach Paul.

Revenue: $857
Expenses: $42
> 2 cases bottled water = $9
> 2 bags ice = $12
(not including the bag Nathan brought - reimburse)
> lunch (14 musubi) = $21
(not including the burgers and fries Joel brought - reimburse)

(Note: The 12 scoop nets cost around $42 but I'll take that hit as a one-time expense. They should last for a long time.)

Total profit: $815

That's a robust first time out. The added good news is that we don't have to spend any more on scoop nets.

$815 / 6 Thunder players = $135.83 credited to each player's Player Budget for 2015-16.

Tanielu Afe $135.83
Felcris Ahadain $135.83
Jance Apuya $135.83
Chaz Enos $135.83
Jonah Gormley $135.83
Ryan Higashionna $135.83

Saturday Fund Day

It was kind of last minute but our fundraiser this afternoon went awesomely. Great job by Jonah, Jance, Felcris, Mosi, Ryan and our cleanup hitter, Chaz.

Big mahalo to the parents who helped out: Joel Gormley, Jason Apuya, Nathan Higashionna. Mahalo to Mrs. Gormley for the Slurpees! Also mahalo to Jonah's sister Chelsea for helping out with sign holding even though it was hot out there.

Each of the 6 Thunder put a good sent into his travel cost today. Well worth 3 hours of teamwork in the sun and a little rain. The folks in Kailua were very friendly and generous.

Next spot will be Pearl City, park at Home Depot and hit the intersection near there. Sierra's dad, Eric, recommends it highly. Her Islanderz team did well there two weeks ago.

If we have at least 6 Thunder players (and two adults), we'll go for the 9:00 am start to secure the spot ahead of any other teams. The second shift can come in at 11:30 am and go until 2:00 pm. Whoever wants to stay for both can do that and double his/her share.

If we don't have a 9:00 am shift, then we'll just start at 11:00 am and go until 2:00 pm, just a single shift (like today). Please bring coolers and ice. I'll bring some cases of water and ice, but that's it. There's limited space in my car because I'm probably picking up some players again.

Final note: We have distributed more than 300 tickets out of the 400 that were printed. That's pretty good considering we just received them yesterday (Friday). Please crank out the phone calls, emails and texts to all family and friends. They love huli chicken. Give them every chance to bask in the wonderful aroma of the juicy half chickens. Plural.
WE LUB TEAMWORK! WE LUB THIS GAME!

H1 Thunder 38, Swish 37 (13U)

Compete & Learn League, 13U Gold Division
Another thriller by our Pups 2.0 and another gutsy and clutch victory. Great team defense in the 2nd half with Ryan driving for big layups late in the game on the left side. Jhevin and Jason hit big 3-pointers and Jonah sank two FTs to give us the lead in the last :20 or so.

Then Jonah forced Swish's big man into a miss in the final seconds for the win.

Great turnaround by our Pups in the last two games to even our record at 2-2.

Please say a prayer for Jayden, who fell on his back in the first half and sat out the rest of the game. He was walking but in a lot of pain. Tough kid.

Lineup: Jayla, Marthew, Skylar, Walter, Jhevin, Jayden, Jason, Jance, Jonah, Ryan.

Next: fish net fundraiser sat 100 to 400 pm - meet at windward mall pkg lot across Burger King.
Sun 1030 am to 130 pm - site TBA.

Friday, June 26, 2015

Sat Fish Net: Windward Oahu

After our game at Le Jardin, we will fish net 1:00-4:00 pm at either Kaneohe Burger King intersection or Castle Junction. If both sites are occupied, we'll do Kam Shopping Center intersection. A crew of 6 adults and 10 players (in uniform/jersey) is ideal, but we can do with a little less. The more the better so we can extend during the red light and catch more potential donations.

Meet at Windward Mall (across Burger King) near the traffic lights by 12:30 pm and bring fish nets if you already have.

We will also fish net on Sunday 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, site TBA. Most likely Sand Island/Nimitz intersection (catch the traffic going in and out of New Hope church).
Time to make dreams happen, Thunder!

H1 Thunder 37, Damien 29 (V)

Kalani Varsity League
Another sold team win led by our defense. Tenchi was a human block machine in the first half. Offensively, we looked a bit tired, missing some easy shots, defense made up for it.

It was a game where the young ref allowed a lot of heavy contact on-ball both ways, and Damien was in major hammer and hack mode. Eventually our guys started to adapt to the officiating by driving hard to the basket. That got us into the bonus and we got our share of free throws from Radyn and Kapaa.

An ugly win is always beautiful. Good work, Thunder!

Lineup: Jayden, Jance, Colin, Jonah, Keanu, Felcris, Michael, Kapaa, Chase, Ryan, Radyn, Tenchi.

More on travel plans. Spent the afternoon hunting for good condo prices. Looks like Maalaea Bay Condos (between Lahaina and Kihei) is the best option. Nice pool, too. See below (and photo above).

Also, Colin is not making the trip (most likely) but if he goes, his family will make their own reservation plans.

We will probably fly out early Tuesday, July 21 and return Sunday night, July 26. The Apuyas will leave on Saturday before the final (championship?) game.

And, all our games are being played in Lahaina, according to Maui Summer Classic director Marcus Rogers.

Get your huli chicken groove on

Heard back from Jimmy this afternoon (Thursday). He sent this text.

> > >

Sorry, I don't know why it's taking so long to print the tickets. I just talked to Hoku's and they said it will be ready tomorrow at 9am. I will p/u tickets and have them for you at rainbows at 10am at logo store. Sorry for the delay. I hope you have enough time to distribute.

< < <

We'll have the huli chicken tickets Friday morning. Please line up all (and I do mean ALL) of your hungry huli chicken customers and get them the tickets ASAP since the pickup date is really close (Sunday, July 5).

The big boost in selling tickets is that we get the funds in our hands before the pickup date. If you don't sell tickets and just rely on pickup purchases on the day of sale, then anything can mess it up from bad weather to change of plans. So please get the tickets out and money collected. That's our insurance.

I've made a group-rate request with Hawaiian Airlines and they'll reply back within 72 hours. W/o group rate, cost is not too bad at $84 for the cheapest ticket from HNL to Maui. Finding a cheap condo is a different story. I've been hunting online for the past couple of hours and it's tough. Maui is bigger destination spot than Kona, so prices are higher and, more than anything, just finding an open vacancy is rough. Still hunting.

REMINDER: We will do the fish net fundraiser on Sunday, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Mot likely, the site will be Kam Shopping Center or Pearlridge area, but we might try Sand Island Road/Nimitz Highway to ctch the folks going in and out of New Hope church. PLAYERS please wear your jerseys/uniforms and meet at the site by 10:00 am. I will have fish scoop nets but if you have your own, please bring those.

ARTISTIC THUNDER - We need a really good sign that reads "SUPPORT H1 THUNDER BASKETBALL TRIP TO MAUI". A big sign, not too huge, but large enough for drivers at the red light to read from a distance. Please make one for this weekend. Mahalo :)

Update Thur 6/25, 3:15 pm
Marcus Rogers of Maui Summer Classic texted back this afternoon and said our Inter/JV games will begin no earlier than 3:00 pm on Tue July 21. That gives us time to fly over and check in without rushing. It also saves us on one night of hotel/condo and van rental.

I asked when the final day's games (Sat July 25) will end, and he said it's hard to say this early. So we're going to prepare for Sat night games, hoping the games actually end earlier for the guys who plan to fly home earlier (Jance/family, Colin?).

5:15 pm - Mosi.

Wednesday Funday

We got the most out of a rainy afternoon. Drizzles off and on, but we got lots of reps in with offensive sets. Really needed that for our 13U. Also got in a huge amount of push-ups, planks, crunches and 6 inches. The guys really love the ab work haha.

Finished with 3-point drills. Felcris and Walter went 1-on-1 for about 30 minutes after practice. Chaz and DJ played pickup ball for about 40 minutes. GREAT WORK, THUNDER!!
Lineup: Jance, Felcris, Chaz, Jason, Matthew, Skylar, Jayden, Jonah.
