Saturday Game Day! H1 Thunder vs. Asing Park Heat, 11:50 am, Aiea gym
Another Ironman day ahead. Hopefully, being short-handed the past two nights won't wear us out on Saturday.
Saturday lineup: Kali'a Mielke, Jared Elwin, Kapaa Nishimura, Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho, Hsien Pascua.
Not confirmed: Chris Afe, Manoa Kualii Moe, Joshua de Jesus, Walter Berthold.
Out: Micah Visoria (birthday party), Kyle Moraga (church), Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain (school game).
It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

H1 Thunder 28, HomeGrown 27, OT (Int)
CAL League Intermediate Division, Kilauea gym
Congrats to Coach Roy and the Thunder on a gritty, gutsy win tonight over a tall HomeGrown team. It's a regular theme this winter, us playing tall Intermediate (and 13U) teams, but the Thunder came through in the end. Micah hit the winning free throw in the overtime shootout (CAL rule). Way to go, boys!
Tonight's lineup: Javan Montiho, Micah Visoria, Ryan Higashionna, Jared Elwin, Kapaa Nishimura, Kyle Moraga. Only 6 strong, but they battled through.
Mahalo to Julie Montiho for shooting the game video, her first time. Job well done, Julie!
I was there for one quarter, went to work and texted Coach Roy about an hour later. It was AWESOME to get the good news.
Next: Saturday, 10:50 am - Warmups, Aiea gym outside court. 11:50 am - Thunder vs. Asing Park.
WE LUB THIS GAAAME!!

Tar Heels 35, H1 Thunder 26 (13U)
PAA 13U Division, Kilauea gym
We started strong, led 14-3. But with only 7 Thunder, it was tough keeping up with another tall team. The refs let both sides play physical and that wore us down since our only big was Kapaa. No Chris Afe, Micah Visoria and Walter Berthold tonight.
We did pretty well with the press and halfcourt zone, but fatigue was a factor. Jared had just finished school practice. Josh is sick. To save our legs, I called off the press in the second half. The Tar Heels hit some big 3-pointers to get come back and take the lead.
Our halfcourt offense was pretty good until the final 8-9 minutes when we really tired and we were scoreless. It's tough asking our guys to give more under those circumstances, but they gave their best and I am proud of them!
We'll go over a few things tomorrow before our next game. We need all five guys to run the pressbreaker right. And we need to know our basic plays, like Princeton and Monday. We'll get there, getting better one day at a time.
And, I hope, we'll face the Tar Heels in the playoffs.
Today's lineup: Josh Roberts, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Jared Elwin, Kapaa Nishimura, Joshua de Jesus, Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho. Mahalo to Kali'a Mielke for helping coach on the bench.
Next: Friday, 4:30 p.m. - Warmups, Kilauea gym outside court. 5:30 pm - Thunder vs. HomeGrown (CAL Intermediate). Full strength lineup, please!
Manoa Kualii Moe, Kyle Moraga, Chris Afe, Hsien Pascua, MIcah Visoria, Walter Berthold.
Saturday, Feb. 1, 11:50 am - vs. Asing Heat (Aiea Intermediate Division). Warmups 10:50 am.
Sunday, Feb. 2, 11:00 am - Shooting practice, McCully gym. No games due to Super Bowl Sunday

Blue Devils 55, H1 Thunder 31 (Int)
CAL Intermediate Division
It was an old-fashioned butt kicking. We went up against a strong, older team and got outplayed and outcoached. The Blue Devils shot extremely well, probably above 50%, probably close to 60%.
Chris was available today and he did good work in the low post when we got the entry passes in. That's one thing I wish I'd called more of. But it's true, we were fatigued, so our fullcourt pressure was not a factor in the third quarter.
They played man defense on us all game, which normally I love. But we didn't play strong offensively, especially on our pick and roll plays. Still too many dribbles and not enough straight-off-the-pick attacks. That's something we will work on at practice. When we were aggressive to the basket, we got points, drew a ton of fouls and had the Blue Devils in trouble.
As all of our guys get older, this will be more instinctive and intuitive. They'll know when it's time to burst to the basket with the ball.
The benefit of playing older guys who are skilled is that we really get tested, win or lose. This is the worst whupping we've taken in a long time, but I hope it inspires us to master the fundamentals and learn to attack when the opportunities are there.
For awhile it looked like we were going to have just 4 or 5 players today.
Today's lineup: Walter Berthold, Javan Montiho, Micah Visoria, Chris Afe, Kyle Moraga, Kapaa Nishimura, Jared Elwin, Joshua de Jesus (Josh).
As always, we will stick together. Teammates loyal to teammates no matter what the situation or obstacle. Being on time. Being honest with coaches. Forgiving one another. Growing stronger together.
We have three games in the coming week (Thur/Fri/Sat), so let's get ready. WE LUB THIS GAME!!

H1 Thunder 83, H4C 12 (Int)
Aiea League Intermediate Division
We were shorthanded and on the verge of a possible forfeit 12 hours ago. Thank God we ended up with 9 players at today's game. The hustle and quick transition was in full gear most of the time. Our defensive intensity was high most times, and even though we still reach a bit too much, everybody played hard despite the score.
I really expected a better H4C team. Their 15U and 17U teams have some nice shooters. Their 11U team was undefeated in CAL Silver Division last fall. I was hoping for an up-and-down, fast tempo game by both teams. But we can't control anything but our own actions. We pulled back the fullcourt traps before halftime, played zone and man defenses the rest of the way.
Good teamwork today, Thunder. I hope you had fun. Let's do this again sometime. (Like tomorrow.)
Mahalo to Coach Rob Mielke for making a big effort to make sure we had enough guys. He and Kali‘a got in touch with Manoa's family to make sure he came. At that time, we were certain of only 5 players. Also, mahalo to Coach Roy for bringing Kyle right after church. We ended up with a good number of players, but it never hurts to be as close to full power as possible.
Today's lineup: Ryan Higashionna, Walter Berthold, Kapaa Nishimura, Javan Montiho, Joshua de Jesus, Kyle Moraga, Micah Visoria, Kali'a Mielke, Manoa Kualii Moe.
Not available: Jared Elwin, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain and Hsien Pascua had school league games today. Not sure what's going on with Chris Afe. We stopped by his house before the game and Josh said he heard Chris' voice while he was knocking on the door, but nobody showed. If I don't hear from Chris soon, I'm going to talk with his dad. Either he's been grounded or something else is going on, I have no idea. Chris is one of the ORIGINAL Thunder 12U/13U. I'm still sad when he doesn't practice and play with his Thunder brothers.

Knowledge for thirsty Thunder
(I wrote this on Facebook (H1 Thunder group page) on Friday, not expecting to write more than a couple of sentences.)
First, I heard from Nate this afternoon and he said Ryan is doing much better. Not sure if he went to school or not, but main thing is he's OK. Thank you, Lord!
I've edited the game video from Thursday. It was exporting when I left for work, and I'll load it up overnight.
Notes on the KBA game: We played so well defensively in the first half. If not for the pressbreaking issues - not setting up wide, not being patient, not using the entire court - we wouldn't have fallen behind 23-9 in the second half. Everything before and after that was excellent, though. We scored 9 points in the first 22 minutes, and then we outscored them 22-8 in the final 10 minutes to force OT.
Tomorrow (Saturday), we'll play H4C, a team that usually has shooters and likes to run with us. If we have our usual 8-9 players, I'm looking forward to seeing us play our usual game and run, run, run, press, press, press. If H4C shoots well and scores 70, good. We'll keep running and score 80! If they score 90, we'll just have to score 100. Yeah, we can do it. We probably will some day fairly soon.
I'm not exaggerating. In one of our games last week, the other team played zone all game and we got 35 3-point shots, almost all of them wide open. We missed that night, but the point is that when we're shooting well, we can score big points real fast. When we hit 10 treys against Asing Park, that was more normal. Or when we hit 14 treys against Swish. Neither time did we take 35 3-pointers.
If we shoot hot and hit half of those 35, that's 18 treys which equals 54 points just on outside shots alone. The college record is 21 treys (set last week) and their games are twice as long as ours (stop clock, longer total minutes). And when we stretch defenses out to the 3-point line, it opens up the paint for a lot of easy layups. Fun times!
That's what I mean when I say it's not going to be unusual for us to score 70-80 points per game once we really get used to it.

Thoughts, prayers
Prayers: Lela Afe-passion, recovering from stomach surgery. Please get well soon, Lela. Ryan Higashionna, who had a head injury tonight. He's doing OK, but blunt force injuries (fell on the court) are always dangerous, so his family's watching him carefully for any symptoms of concussion. Also, Ryan's grandpa is in the hospital, so please, please keep Nate & Arlene Higashionna and their ohana in your prayers, everybody.
Thunder in OBL 15U, 13U divisions
It's official: H1 Thunder are playing in the first-ever Open Court Basketball League (OBL), which starts on Feb. 28. (That's after our current leagues are pau.)
We're in the 15U and 13U divisions. Games are on weekends. Right now, I believe we are in contention for titles in both divisions, just like we're contenders in the Aiea (intermediate), PAA (13U) and CAL (intermediate) leagues. CAL doesn't have an official championship playoff, but we are capable of great feats when we put our minds to it in all these leagues here and on the mainland
I met with the OBL director/coach after our game tonight and gave him the check ($500 per team/division). Yes, we've got a lot of fundraising to do, but it'll be worth every ounce of effort and teamwork. WE LUB THIS GAME!

A night of extremes for our Thunder. We were cold from the field again, didn't execute our pressbreaker for 2/3rds of the game. We were down21-9 (I think) with 11 minutes left. 23-9 with 10 minutes left. Finally, we played smart and Ryan started our comeback with 10 minutes left, hit a 3 from the corner. KBA is a tall team with good players, but we hustled and started hitting shots. Then our press had them totally frazzled.
We lost Ryan when he hit his head on the court hard on a steal. The head official told him he had to sit out the rest of the game as a safety precaution. It was the right move, but we sure missed him.
We were down 31-29 with :08 left in regulation when KBA missed a free throw. Kapaa got the rebound and went coast to coast, scoring on a sweet spin move and left-handed floater at the buzzer to tie the game and force overtime.
OT: first team to score 3 points, or whichever team has the lead at the end of 1 minute wins.
Once we got to OT, mental errors hindered us again. We didn't box out as a team and they got a layup on us. We were going to run Monday, which had worked in the final minutes of regulation against their man defense, but we took a quick, rushed 3-point shot that was an air ball. Not a bad idea except the shot was a little bit rushed, affecting the shooter's balance, and there we didn't have time to get underneath for an offensive rebound. But KBA got the rebound and called time out.
I asked our guys to pack the paint and let KBA shoot the long-range shot. Just challenge the shooters, don't foul. But they got a shot from the left elbow area and we fouled the guy. He hit the first free throw and the game was over.
It was a HUGE COMEBACK because all our guys play with heart. But we — every one of us — needs to play smarter to win close games. We gave this one away, no question. We really need to practice more to get smarter as a team, and that's been tough lately with everybody so busy (school team practices).
I'm stoked and PROUD of the guys for hanging in there and rallying. A win would've been gravy. We never stopped believing.
We're 3-1 in PAA 13U and there will be playoffs down the road. We can win this championship, no doubt. But let's focus on getting better (and smarter) one day at a time. WE LUB THIS GAME!
Today's lineup: Josh Roberts, Walter Berthold, Ryan Higashionna, Jared Elwin, Kapaa Nishimura, Joshua de Jesus, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Javan Montiho.
Missing: Chris Afe, Micah Visoria.
Mahalo to Kali'a Mielke for being there again to support his teammates on the bench.
Next: Friday - no practice.
Saturday, 11:40 am - Warmups at Aiea gym outside court. Game time 12:40 pm - H1 Thunder vs. H4C (Aiea Intermediate Division).
Sunday, 1:30 pm - Warmups at Kilauea gym outside court. Game time 2:30 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Blue Devils (CAL Intermediate Division).
Boxscore added 1/25/14
We were dominated on the boards 29-11. They had more offensive rebounds (15) than we had in total boards. We made just eight baskets and had 15 turnovers. And yet, we were in position to win this game. We had solid free-throw shooting (11-for-16) and made just enough threes (4-for-11) to get back in the game, but overall, it was the non-measurable factor — HEART — that got us to rally from 14 points down and force overtime.

OBL: Do you guys want to play?
OBL (Open Court Basketball League) starts at the end of Feb.
They may have an opening in 13U and 15U. Who wants to play?
I'm OK playing in it if there's no other league. (PAA 15U starts Feb. 19; Aiea and CAL Intermediate Divisions finish in late Feb.) We played in an Open Court tournament about a year ago and that was all right. I still have concerns about their parents' sportsmanship, so we'll see.

Tuesday funday
A lot of guys had school practice today. The lone gunner today was Walter Berthold. We worked on ballhandling and he took a lot of shots: 260 total. A lot of floaters, pull-up jumpers and floaters, a lot of ballhandling. Working on keeping his eyes up as he dribbles and changes direction. Not too many guys work as hard as Walter when it comes to reps. Then I went to Kailua to cover OIA girls basketball playoffs. A good day. WE LUB THIS GAME!
Next: Wednesday - no practice.
Thursday - Game day! 6:45 pm - Warmups, Kilauea gym outside court. Game time 7:45 pm, Thunder vs. KBA.

On this fine Martin Luther King holiday, 3 Thunder decided to spend a late afternoon working out at Ke‘ehi Lagoon Park. Ran 2.5 miles, a mix of endurance and explosive work (laps, defensive slide and sprints). Also got in verticals, pushups, crunches. Solid work by Kyle Moraga, Joshua de Jesus andFelcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain.
Next: Tuesday, 3:30 pm, practice at Makiki Park. I leave for work at 4:45, but Coach Roy will get there by then. WE LUB THIS GAME!

CAL League Intermediate Division, Kilauea gym
I really liked our chances after a strong performance earlier in the day (13U) and especially with Manoa there for the second game.
We stayed close most of the way, but we never led. We were down 10 or 12 early, got within 21-17 or so, but trailed by 6 to 9 points most of the way. Kailua is, by far, the tallest team in the any of our leagues. But we did a decent job rebounding though our boxing out could and should be better. It was tough on Kapaa and Kyle to battle with guys 6-4 and 6-6.
We were cold from 3-point range. I think Manoa was the only one to hit from the arc, and he was also the only one (besides Hsien and Kyle) who didn't play in the earlier 13U game. I think having just 7 guys for the 13U game (against Asing Park) wore us out somewhat for the second game. That's where we really miss Chris (stayed home to take care of his mom) and Kali‘a (playing in CAL with his original team).
We finally got something going in the fourth quarter when our guys really attacked the rim hard on drives. Kapaa really went tough and got beat up pretty good. All our guys played with heart, and if we hit a few more threes, it would've changed the whole game. Kailua had just 7 guys (we had 10 for the CAL game) and they were running on fumes at the end, but it was too late.
We have guys who did their best in two games, and we have guys who are rusty and/or out of shape. It's hard to keep playing guys who are out of shape. Which is why on Monday, Coach Roy has a beach workout planned at Keehi Lagoon.
It was a good weekend: two wins in three games. We still have a lot of work to do. We will get there.
Today's Intermediate lineup: Manoa Kualii Moe, Kyle Moraga, Hsien Pascua, Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria, Jared Elwin, Joshua de Jesus (Josh), Felcris Jay Corpuz and Kapaa Nishimura.

Next: Monday, 4:00 pm, Keehi Lagoon workout. Call Coach Roy 284-1643 for a ride from Kalihi. Everybody else, call me 551-1054.

Thunder 65, Asing Park Heat 33 (13U)
PAA League 13U Division
First game of the day was at Palolo gym. Floor is in good shape, clean and grippy. Thunder played hard from start to finish, solid and fast in transition. Pulled back on the press in the second half since we had only 7 players. Good ball movement, still getting better with the details on offense and defense. Kapaa had the big work under the boards with Chris not available. Everybody pitched in and played solid defense most of the time.
Lineup: Kapaa Nishimura, Jared Elwin, Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho, Joshua de Jesus, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Micah Visoria.
Just finished the stats: We shot 25-for-53 overall, including 10-for-26 from the 3-point arc (38%). Both are very good numbers. We had assists on 20 of our 25 baskets and had just 11 turnovers. We also had 9 steals as a team, which is pretty good considering we pulled back the press at halftime. We also held Asing Park to 13-for-48 shooting (27%) and outrebounded them 35-25.
Kapaa Nishimura had 15 points, 15 rebounds, 7 rebounds, 3 steals. He was 6-for-7 shooting, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Joshua de Jesus had 19 points (7-for-12). Jared Elwin had 12 points, 4 assists, 4 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks. Micah Visoria had 8 pts and 3 assists. Ryan Higashionna had 4 pts, 6 rebounds, 5 assists. Felcris Jay Corpuz had 4 points and Javan Montiho had 3 points.

H1 Thunder 52, 808 Knights 31 (Int)
Aiea League Intermediate Division
Started strong and led 36-22 at halftime. Good transition/fastbreak work. We're getting the hang of it, not quite running the offense straight off the break yet, but we'll get there.
We suited up 8, which is pretty good considering we had some missing guys today. Manoa was able to play, which made a big difference. Having three guys in reserve allows us to keep pressing on defense. If it's just two, much harder.
We got strong work on the boards from Kapaa and Kali‘a, and our backcourt did well in halfcourt and transition. Defensively, we had lapses (not keeping our hands up on shooters). The Knights were missing some players, too, and we were able to get quick, open threes up on the fastbreak against them.
Overall, good work, Thunder!
Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna, Hsien Pascua,Joshua de Jesus, Kapaa Nishimura, Jared Elwin, Manoa Kualii Moe and Kali'a Mielke.
Next:
SUNDAY
12:00 pm - Warmups at Palolo gym outside courts
1:00 pm - Thunder vs. Asing Park (PAA 13U)
3:30 pm - Thunder vs. Kailua (CAL Intermediate)
Not sure who will be there on Sunday. Kali‘a plays for his original team (Blue Devils) in CAL. Manoa may not be there. Chris may not be there. But God is good. He will provide. He provided us with a lot of good work and fun today.

REVISED PICKUP ROUTE: SATURDAY.

7:35 am - Hsien Pascua.
8:20 am - Warmups at Aiea gym outside court. Stretch good, take a lot of shots!
9:20 am - Game time, H1 Thunder vs. 808 Knights.
God always provides enough. Even when it looks like we might be on the verge of forfeiting games. He always comes through. We'll be shorthanded on Saturday, maybe Sunday, too. Chris' mom just had surgery. Felcris is gone. Manoa, who knows? He's been disappearing lately, too. But we will always have enough, I have FAITH. We had only 6 guys last week and hit 14 3-pointers in that game.

Thursday funday
Got to work right away with a 100 Points drill. The guys (six total) ran 5-on-none fastbreaks leading directly into set plays. No hesitations. No stopping. Just flow into every play, the way I've always wanted it. We've gotten to the point where, no, we're not perfect, but we are capable of perfect flow whether we make shots or not. That, to me, is going to take us farther than almost anything else. It's speed, transition, quickness and unselfishness personified.
Finished up with 3-on-3 scrimmage. Good work today, Thunder.
Today's lineup: Joshua de Jesus, Ryan Higashionna, Kyle Moraga, Jared Elwin, Walter Berthold, Javan Montiho.

Hunger games
The players who keep practicing will keep getting better. The players who don't practice fall behind and disappear. I've seen this over the years, guys who turn 14, 15, 16 and lose the hunger. The guys who stay hungry raise their game and their teams to the highest levels.

Mid-afternoon practice was useful. We got a lot of work done with halfcourt plays, including a few new wrinkles. Got some good 3-on-3 work in using the new and old sets, fine-tuning execution on handoffs, pick/roll, etc.
Today's lineup: Kali'a Mielke, Kapaa Nishimura, Kyle Moraga, Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna and Manoa Kualii Moe. Solid 90 minutes of work.
