OK, I'm not so bummed (now) about not getting our team into the Ikaika League. That was a little uneven to begin with since they were going to compromise and allow our 10th graders to play in their 9th-grade league. But once I started thinking (and telling Clay Tang) that we would be fine if the other teams added 10th graders for games against us, it got me on this particular track ...
Why not just schedule exhibition games against teams from anywhere? They don't have to be just from the Ikaika League. If they're already in the CAL League, we probably won't want to play them twice. (Or maybe we will, who knows?) But I'm thinking, why not call all the coaches and teams I can, and schedule games? We can find referees and pay them. We can (hopefully) find gyms to use. If we have to, we can play outdoors at Kahala Park, which is quite empty every afternoon now that the summer league is pau. Buy a scoreboard or use the flipper ones.
Or maybe we can travel. Some of the teams in the Ikaika League include Schofield and Kapolei. It would be interesting to go on the road, I can tell you.
I've done this sort of thing before. I called a ton of people when I coached JV to set a preseason schedule. That was kinda fun. If I can get us an extra game every week, say maybe on Wednesdays and Sundays, that would complement the games we play in CAL (Sunday mornings). (I also scheduled a lot of games between our media hoops team and Big Island varsity teams when I lived in Kona back in the 1990s. A lot of mileage, but also a lot of great memories!)
We just finished KAC and playing one game per week went so slowly. Two would be good, much better.
So, that's my goal right now. Get us more games.
All in favor, say "Aye."
All opposed, say "Nay."
