CAL Thunder: Sunday update

Good morning, guys. Went to the league meeting yesterday at Kilauea Gym. We're one week away from the CAL opener. Here's our schedule.

CAL (15-under) Thunder schedule
Sunday, Aug. 22, 8:00 a.m. Thunder vs. Blazers
Sunday, Aug. 29, 11:30 a.m. Thunder vs. Kings
Sunday, Sept. 5, 8:50 a.m. Thunder vs. Sharks
Sunday, Sept. 12, 11:30 a.m. Thunder vs. Kapolei
Sunday, Sept. 19, 11:30 a.m. Thunder vs. Southside
Sunday, Sept. 26, 8:50 a.m. Thunder vs. KBB
Sunday, Oct. 3, 10:30 a.m. Thunder vs. Kaneohe

Playoffs: Top four teams in a championship semifinal bracket; lower four teams in a consolation semifinal bracket. Each team will have two playoff games.

All games at McKinley High School gym.

As noted before, the league will wrap up before the start of the high school (HHSAA) boys basketball season, so there will be no overlapping of schedules, no eligibility concerns for players who are in high school.

I am definitely pumped for you guys. It'll be a lot of fun. Challenges often are!

Some info on the Ikaika Basketball League: I spoke with Clay Tang after talking with your parents after Saturday morning's practice, and he has agreed to accept our team for his ninth-grade and under league. We'll add a few more players to the five we currently have.

• IBL games will be on Sunday nights
• Games at Manoa gym
• No schedule available yet
• Entry fee is currently $415, subject to change a little

Clay will inform us of any changes. I haven't asked him yet when the league starts. I was just happy and surprised (a little) that everyone who is young enough for this league was willing to play in another league.

So, we'll be in two leagues and the players will have two games every Sunday for the next two months. Fun, fun, fun for them and myself and, hopefully, all of their parents. I know there are concerns as parents about having enough study time, especially on Sunday nights, and simply having rest time for your children. Those are my concerns, too.

If there are any issues relating to that (academics, rest) or anything else, please let me know. It's a beautiful sport that should complement life for us all rather than dominate it. Otherwise, it ceases to be fun and joyful. So definitely let me know any time something is up. I promise to be flexible.

In the meantime, I'll be waiting to hear who you'd like to add to the team. I don't want too many players — eight would be fine — or too few. Plus, I'll need to order more jerseys and shorts, so contacting the new players' parents is essential. All in due time.

See you guys on Tuesday!
