Couple of notes to pass on, everybody.
1. I've (finally) started uploading our game video from Sunday (vs. Holy Family Wildcats) to YouTube. It will take all day since I keep it in High Definition mode. I was hoping to get it up much sooner, but my external hard drive ran out of space, so I picked up a cool new one (that's compatible with Mac) yesterday from Best Buy. Wish I'd done it earlier!
2. Our bye date is Oct. 3, the last day of the regular season. The CAL League planned to match us up with another league team for an exhibition game; it wouldn't count in the standings, but would allow us to have an extra game. I was given the option to bring in our own opponent, which I gladly accepted.
So ... we're on the hunt for a opponent on Oct. 3. I have some ideas in mind and if you guys have a team in mind, let me know. Be aware that the team must have players 15 and younger. Nobody older can play, and nobody younger than 13 can play, per league liability (insurance).
The game will be at 12:20 p.m. at McKinley. Good facility, good referees, good people on the scoreboard ... it's ideal. We just need a team to play, and if I had my druthers, it would be a very good team.
If you're wondering why there is a bye, it happened when the league went from eight to seven teams — twice. The first time, Greydon (league director) replaced the Kings with Holy Family. Then Kaneohe pulled out when their coach realized he couldn't participate; he's a junior varsity coach.
But this will work out well for us if we find a good opponent. If we don't find one, we lose out on a nice opportunity. I think we'll have a great game that day.
It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

Post-game: Thunder-Wildcats
Great effort today, Thunder! I encouraged you guys to give it up and dive for loose balls, but you went way beyond the call. There's something special going on when teammates are willing to do whatever it takes for their team to succeed. It's more than words. It's just inspiring beyond anything.
The space in my iMovie is maxed out, so I'm in the process of moving a lot of raw footage of high school football games to my external hard drive and it's taking for-ehh-verrrr. I tried using QuickTime and that was almost instantaneous ... but the problem there is that the "Alias" footage goes "poof!" when I delete (move to trash) the original uploaded video. So there's no way around it. To preserve all the footage in High Definition, it takes time.
One game that I'm saving to the external hard drive (2 hours, 9 minutes) is taking 13 hours. Once that's cleared out, I'll be able to upload today's game with the Wildcats (Holy Family). It'll be fun to watch, especially the tough defense and fastbreaks. It was fun to watch live, but probably a little more fun to play the game that way, I'm guessing.
Good work, guys. Hopefully, we can get everyone to practice this week and continue to work on our skills and our chemistry as a team. That will result in a lot of fun.
I love this game.
Schedule
Tuesday: Practice, 4-6 p.m., Holy Nativity gym. I'll be there around 4:15 with Josh, traffic permitting

If you have your fundamentals down, a lot of creative things can happen on the basketball court.

Thunder: Saturday update
Here's a note from the CAL League for all our parents.
There are costs involved that are covered by our entry fee, but renting a high school gym is not cheap, so ... when we go to McKinley each Sunday morning, please stop by the donation box (big, metallic silver thing near the entrance) and drop a buck or two. Every bit will help, and this league might be the best one I've coached in (and I started in 1982).
The league director, Greydon, sent this (see the letter at left) out a couple of weeks ago and I'm just reposting it. He's planning to expand the league next season by a LOT, and with his ability to network with the best referees and secure excellent facilities, it would be great for all of us if the CAL League thrives for years and decades to come.
Greydon can't do it alone, though. I'm giving up cigarettes and vodka to cough up a few deniros for the league. (I don't drink hard liquor or smoke, so that's just a joke. Hahaa. I'll probably cut back on Jamba Juice orange appeal original w/ immunity. Twice a week is 10 bucks.)
Schedule
Saturday: Practice, 10:30 a.m., Kahala Park. Short workout, primary focus on shooting, footwork, ballhandling. If the players want to scrimmage, we can, but not for too long in this hot weather.
Sunday: Pre-game 10:10 a.m. Game 11:10 a.m. McKinley gym.
Tuesday and Thursday: Practice, 4:00 p.m., Holy Nativity gym. For those of us who can't get there before 4, just arrive as soon as you can. Josh gets out of school at 3:30 (Kamehameha), so we'll haul over from Kalihi and hopefully get to Holy Nativity before 4:15. It's worth the extra effort to get indoors the way the game was designed. Thank you, John!
See (some of) you guys in an hour!

Thunder update
Practice tomorrow (Saturday), 10:30 a.m.
> Light practice
> Focus on shooting, ballhandling, low-post offense, defense
Good workout yesterday, everybody! Wind was strong, but we got a lot of bases covered, from basic fundamentals (dribbling) to zone offense to man offense.
We're very fortunate that Blake's father, John, has offered to get us access to Holy Nativity's gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Nothing like the sound of basketballs on a wood floor!

Thunder game: Sunday, 11:10 am
The CAL League is still at 7 teams and working on an 8th team, if possible. Either way, we play the Wildcats on Sunday at 11:10 a.m.
We'll meet at 10:10 a.m. to stretch and warm up. All teams have to be in the gym at least 20 minutes before tip-off by rule.
If you guys know of any teams that would be interested in becoming the 8th team, please let me know and I'll pass Greydon's contact info along. He's been trying hard to avoid byes for any of the CAL teams.
See you at practice today, Kahala Park, 4:30 p.m.
See the Thunder-Blazers video at this previous post.

Game story: Thunder 31, Blazers 28
HONOLULU — Eliet Donley scored all five of his points in a span of 20 seconds, breaking a 26-all tie as the Diamond Head Thunder rallied past the Aiea Blazers 31-28 Sunday morning at McKinley Student Council Gym.
Donley, a 6-foot-1 eighth-grader, also defended in the final seconds as Aiea missed a potential game-tying 3-point try from the corner.
Keanu Vela, a 5-11 freshman, led the Thunder with 15 points (6-for-13 from the field). Mike Pimentel added four points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Blake Wade, a 6-2 eighth grader, pulled down five rebounds and helped the Thunder control the low post. He added a key turnaround jumper in the paint for a 3-point play in the final minutes.
The Thunder finished with a 36-19 edge on the boards, including 13 offensive caroms.
They led 10-7 at halftime, but the cagey Blazers pushed the tempo and used fastbreak buckets to take a 15-12 lead midway through the second half.
The game was tied at 26 with less than 2 minutes left when point guard Randon Oda (five assists) sliced into the lane and fed Donley for a layup just one second before the shot clock expired. After a quick miss by Aiea, Oda fed Donley on a fastbreak, and Donley drove for a traditional three-point play. His free throw gave the Thunder a 31-26 lead with 58 seconds remaining.
That was enough to give the Thunder a win in the CAL (Compete and Learn) League 15-under opener, which tipped off at 8 a.m.
Their next game is on Sunday at 11:10 a.m.

Thunder video: No usernames needed
I decided to skip all the hassles with the video. I changed the setting from "private" to "unlisted", which means we all can watch now (here on this blog).
Please keep the video among team members only. This is meant to be a fun convenience for you, not to be sent to whomever out there. At least until much later, like after the season.
Side note: I'm still going to burn DVDs for each Thunder player.
If anyone has further problems accessing the video, let me know. But it should be instantly watchable now. Thanks for bearing with me. I'm a dinosaur learning how to fly here...

Thunder vs. Blazers: Video is up
(NOTE: 9:25 a.m., Wednesday): I've changed the settings on YouTube so that we can watch the game video here without any further hassle. It was so humbug! Now we can all watch instantly. I just hope everyone keeps the footage to ourselves. Enjoy.)
First, a quick mahalo to John Wade (Blake's father) for giving us the opportunity to practice at Holy Nativity today. I enjoyed it so much! Of course, I would've liked it even more if I were still a baller. That place is a gem. Classic. Normal looking building on the outside and a converted church inside.
The footage I've tried to post since early this morning is finally online. YouTube has a slow process for loading HD-quality footage, but I just got home from practice and dinner, and nearly all 5 parts of the Thunder-Blazers game are loaded and "processed".
Still, nobody will see them until they go to YouTube and connect with me (AlaWaiWestheads). I'm not familiar yet with the actual process, but I should be able to make you a "friend" or subscriber to the channel (where I'm posting videos). Once I figure that out, then you'll be able to see the videos there (private access) or here.
So go to YouTube, sign in (or register if you haven't signed in before), and find me. I'll be checking through the day tomorrow.
Also, if anyone wants a DVD copy, let me know. It takes 2 hours to burn one game onto a DVD, so the sooner you later me know (before practice), the better.
The video can be watched in HD. Just click on '360' to open the window and click again on '720' (HD).
Thunder videos also available at our YouTube Channel

Today's site: Holy Nativity
Thanks to one of our parents for catching my typo: Today's practice is at Holy Nativity School's gym.
I wrote another school's name by mistake in an earlier post. You can see the map there at that post. Just keep in mind, when you hit Aina Haina, turn left at the West Hind/Kalanianaole intersection. Then take yoru first right and go down a block or so and the school should be on the right. I've never been there, but that's what the map says.

test
direct upload to blog
upload through YouTube (private setting)
2 minutes to load a 10-second video
Coming next: game footage. Takes 3 hours to load a 10-minute video (maximum allowed), 1 of 5 parts.
* * *
OK, YouTube is taking forever to load footage, PLUS the first segment got errored and didn't load. 2 1/2 hours wasted.
So I'm trying to load directly to this blog again.
Taking foreverrrrrr......
* * *
OK, now I'm testing the video on Facebook. This is working out pretty amazingly.
1. I can protect the footage via the privacy settings (customized)
2. I can load video here via Facebook with those same customized privacy settings
Now let's see if it'll take forever or not...
Test via Facebook
Quality is supposed to be HD, but it gets grainy when the screen is maximized. Bummers. This will have to do for now.

8:47 a.m.
Gaaaaaaaaah... uploading a 10-minute (part 1 of 5) segment on Facebook is going to take 3 hours, 35 minutes. Not much worse than YouTube. I think it'll stick.
Maybe I'll forget the uploading and just burn DVDs for everybody. This is ridunkulous!
* * *
10:47 a.m.
OK, Part 1 was a dud (didn't upload on YouTube for whatever reason). But Part 2 is almost ready, currently "processing". The upload on Facebook (Part 1) is 1/3 of the way through.
Here's what the embed looks like. Please do not repost or share this with anyone outside the team. Pleeeeeease . . .

2:57 p.m.
Gave the computer a rest. It was hot and tired after being on all night (I fell asleep).
Loading up Parts 1, 3, 4 and 5, which will take about 3 hours for each via YouTube, and I'll see if the adjustment in the privacy settings is working. You'll have to connect with me on YouTube (screen name: AlaWaiWestheads) since the setting is set on private.
I managed to burn two DVDs since lunch time, so I'll pass those out at practice today.

CAL Thunder: Tuesday's practice site
Here's a map that could lead you to Tuesday's practice site: Holy Trinity Nativity School's gym.
LINK: Here
Traveling on Kalanianaole Hwy., once you enter Aina Haina district, key is to locate West Hind Drive intersection, turn left, then make that first right. I have to pickups to make (Josh from school, Kevin from the mall) so I might not be there until 4:30 or so.
Practice is 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Indoor basketball. What a concept. See you guys there!

CAL Thunder: Schedule update
CAL League director Greydon Espinda confirmed that the Thunder will play next Sunday as scheduled. Since the Kings dropped out last week, the Wildcats (Holy Family) are taking their slot, so we play at 11:30 a.m., McKinley Student Council Gym.
WOOHOO!
CAL League is still looking for an 8th team to replace Kaneohe, which dropped out at the last minute. If you know of any interested teams, please let me know and I'll pass the info on to Greydon.

CAL Thunder: Sunday update
WOW. First of all, I was impressed. Nearly everybody made it to McKinley for our 8 a.m. game today. I remember being 13, 14 and struggling to get up early on weekends.
As for the game, good teamwork, Thunder! I can say that only because we just played a real solid TEAM in the Aiea Blazers. They were seasoned veterans who pass the ball well, play tough zone defense together -- highly efficient, very good team. Getting a win over them is huge for us, especially with the clutch plays on offense and defense. Woohoo!
If you guys feel like we didn't play well, give it time. We're still meshing as a team despite having only 2-3 practices per week. I'm encouraged by today's game and the great effort we had on the floor. We also had intelligence out there, steadily getting more effective with our motion zone offense. Once we started crashing the offensive boards consistently, we were on a good roll.
Zone defense, not bad. The Blazers missed open shots so we were fortunate. Man defense was better, kept us in more of an uptempo mode.
We've got plenty of room for improvement. That will come with time, patience and willpower. I'm stoked about today, though. We had fun and we'll have more fun in the coming weeks.
Note: The schedule is being revamped, I think, so we'll get a solid one sometime soon. With the teams that dropped out and got added into the CAL League, I can understand how tough it is for Greydon (director) to keep the schedule set.
Note 2: I'm working on extra games, possibly with Leilehua and the Aliis, and more. Stay tuned!

CAL Thunder: Saturday update
Part of the Thunder showed up for practice at Kahala Park this morning. Other guys had afternoon workouts to rest for. Some guys, I have no idea why they're not coming, but it's all good. If you love the game, you'll dedicate yourself. Show up, I'm there, we can work on your game. It's all up to you.
Present: Colby, Mike, Tai, Randon
Absent: Blake (workout), Eliet (workout), Josh (band), Cody, Kevin, Keanu
I picked up the uniforms after practice. Tai and Colby were still at the park, so I brought them their jerseys and shorts. They came out pretty nice, though I'd like to get a cooler font next time. If anybody knows a good printer, please let me know. Orange will do for now. I'm on the hunt for teal blue jerseys for next league.
Game day is tomorrow. Hoohaah! Be at McKinley (outside court) by 7:15 a.m. We have to be in the gym 20 minutes before tip-off (7:40) and game time is 8:00 a.m.
Fun, fun, fun!

CAL Thunder: Thursday update
Thunder practice today with just 6 guys who really love basketball. I feel thankful that it wasn't a wasted afternoon. It's been a long 2-3 weeks of work and I was so tired. I didn't give you guys the kind of practice we should've had. We should've worked on our halfcourt and fullcourt presses, but my brain was so fried by the time I got to the park.
We had fun, nobody got hurt and we're 2 1/2 days from our 1st game in CAL league. Actually, I take that back. Keanu got a cut lip on an inadvertent pass by Eliet. Keanu hurt a finger a minute after that on the same 3-on-2, 2-on-1 fastbreak drill. then I inadvertently drilled Mike in the forehead with a pass on a v-cut drill. Tired people should never drive or pass basketballs.
Present: Keanu, Eliet, Blake, Randon, Mike, Colby
Absent: Kevin, Cody, Josh (injury), Tai (football), Dru (football)
Next practice on Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Light workout, walk through plays, a few drills.
