Not a typo. The Stingrays had all kinds of motivation for beating us after we gave them a loss four days ago in pool play. But we just didn't show the kind of quickness and desire that we had in the first four games. Some of it was fatigue and a lot of it was losing the fighting spirit after the semifinal loss to Ali‘i.
Btw, Ali‘i blew out SGV (Calif.) to win the title. We could feel good, sorta, about losing to the tourney champs by only one point. That's one way to spin it. Or we could wonder why we don't have the mettle and determination to give the Stingrays a real battle no matter what the stakes are.
I'm not mad about it. A third-place game is never that simple to deal with after a heartbreaking loss. Yelling at a team after this kind of game does no good. The value of this tourney will show in the days and weeks ahead. Have we become a better team, a stronger chain of links? Or have we reached our peak as a unit?
I hope it's the former. I know we can improve a whole lot even if we're a pretty good team. We'll see soon enough.
