WE LOVE THIS GAAAAAAME!!!
It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

Last Call: New Uniforms
## Last Call: New Uniforms - Sizes/Numbers/Payment ##
Below is the process we went through for a new design since our original one simply wasn't absolutely pono, maybe. Rather than take that chance, we came up with this, a "sonic diamond" that represents our defensive philosophy, and also the notion that each of us is a gem in the rough — a diamond.
Corny, maybe, but at least it's ours. Big MAHALO to Gerard for making this happen, cleaning up the design and making it look professional smile emoticon
Call/text me with your uniform needs ASAP, including parents and friends/supporters. $30 per uniform for players. $40 per jersey (no shorts) for fans/parents/etc.

If you no' mo' kala (money), no worries. But if you can pay and nevah pay yet, please chip in before we send the order out to the P.I.

Thursday funday
Five Thunder strong at today's practice. Overcast, but the rain never fell and there was a light breeze. We got a lot of shooting drills in again, along with pressbreaker and fullcourt pressure work. We only work out for 90 minutes, so we focus on what we can and today was a very good rep day.
Lineup: Chaz, Micah, Jhevin, Jonah, Jance, Trinity. Trinity practiced for the first time since injuring her ankle on Sunday (at home).
No practice on Friday. We'll be back at it on Saturday.

Ikaika League vs NJB All-Net
Just doing some screening, so to speak, for our H1 Thunder's participation in future and current leagues.
One major factor, and I always say this is 90% of the whole deal, is officiating. We don't expect perfection. After all, missing a call or two doesn't mean a referee isn't very good. We are all human. But interaction with coaches and players is important. A very good referee can do this while continuing to have authority on the court. And there are some very good ones in our leagues.
But I will try, at all costs, to avoid two referees who have ruined games for us in the past: Ramon and Matt (Ho). Ramon cost us a playoff game in NJB All-Net 13U two years ago, suddenly taking the game over and making guess calls while he was 50 feet away. Phantom fouls, especially one on Tani as he scored a layup on a fastbreak. Allowing a player on the other team to travel all game long.
Ramon has a well-earned reputation for this penchant, for trying to dominate the game with his whistle, and this is well known from youth leagues on up to men's leagues. The one place where I've noticed he tones it down big time is in varsity basketball, where they have three-man crews and he is never the lead official.
Matt Ho has also cost us games before. He singled out one of our players (Shawn Cambra) in our first league (KAC) and teched him a few times for doing nothing more than a normal reaction to foul calls. I always give referees the benefit of the doubt, being a former youth referee myself, but after the third time, I realized that Matt was deliberately picking on Shawn.
Later, he reffed a game in NJB All-Net 15U and called Isaiah Visoria for an offensive foul even though he later admitted to me that the never actually saw the foul. Isaiah was dribbling the ball on the right wing, totally juked the defender, who fell down, and Matt called an offensive foul. He made the call even though he was behind Isaiah and had no angle to see the alleged contact.
That came with just a few seconds left in a game. We ended up losing that game. I talked with Matt and his other referee for 30 minutes after that. He never explained to me why he decided to make a crucial call without actually seeing it.
A year or so went by, and he was coaching a team in another league, playing against us. One of our players told me after the game that Matt had been asking our Thunder players, "Is Coach Paul a good coach?"
I don't care what people think of me as a coach. But I do care that a referee who has hurt us in the past asks these kinds of questions in the middle of a game. And it's pretty obvious that he has a problem with me for standing up for our guys when he makes crazy calls and decisions as a referee.
So, it's a priority for me to stay in leagues that have good referees who are accountable to their league directors — CAL and PAA, for sure — and to avoid leagues that refuse to accept responsibility for referees like Ramon and Matt.
So I asked some league directors this: Would you allow Ramon and Matt to officiate in your league?
Greydon Espinda, CAL: "Never."
Clay Tang, Ikaika League: "They do not officiate in my league. We hold a higher standard on officiating."
Stephen Chong, NJB All-Net: "We do not hire individuals. We hire the association. As far as I know they are still part of the association that we use. We also use a group headed by Chuck Martin. Do you like Chuck? Refs are refs. There are bad refs in all ref associations. But its your choice. We do not play in some leagues for similar reasons."
In other words, Stephen is saying that his league is not responsible for quality control. That they will never suspend or ban Ramon and Matt. This has been the same every year. They refuse to be accountable to the most important people in the league: the players.
(Note: Poor officiating is one of the reasons we will not play in Open Court League no matter how many times they call/beg us to return. They do not believe in using the National Federation of High Schools rule book and, in fact, they are proud of this fact. This is a horrendous disservice to players.)
Ikaika League and NJB All-Net run at roughly the same time (March to May), using some of the same gyms. There would be scheduling conflicts if we played in both. We've never played in Ikaika League, but I am strongly considering it.
1. Quality Control on officiating. Ikaika League obviously cares more than NJB All-Net about this, even though so many coaches do not like their teams and players being subjected to Ramon and Matt.
2. NJB All-Net does not allow players to play in more than one age group division. Ikaika League does.
3. Ikaika League charges $550 per team while NJB All-Net charges $550 per team PLUS $5 per player for insurance.
4. I've heard only good things about Ikaika League over the years. Many times.
CAL League (Intermediate Gold Division for us) will wrap up sometime in March, I believe. PAA League, as well. (Aiea League will be done by Feb. 15.)
If we don't play in NJB All-Net this spring, we will still probably play in the annual NJB Summer Classic (July) because for whatever reason, I haven't seen Ramon and Matt referee any games in that tournament.
Parents, please provide your thoughts and input on this any time.

We had 3 Thunder at practice today, great shooting conditions at Makiki Park. We got in roughly 250 shots for each shooter, similar to Tuesday. Not having a 5-on-5 practice is less than ideal, but it also gives us a chance to really work on our skills.
Lineup: Jance, Jonah, Javan. Good work, guys!
Chaz and Micah are sick. So is
Josh R. Trinity is out with an injured ankle. (Not sure when that happened.) Ryan out until late February (wrist). Everybody else has school practice or football training.

Sierra the varsity bomber
She was patient. Sierra Murobayashi's sophomore season began on the JV squad at Maryknoll. Nothing wrong with that when the varsity program is stacked and stocked with immense talent.
The JV Lady Spartans went unbeaten and won the ILH crown, and Sierra was a big part of that with her hustle, IQ and, most of all, that killer long-range accuracy.
The JV season ended in December, and Sierra was promoted to varsity. She practiced every day with them, bided her time and continues to be a reserve guard always ready when her number is called. Maryknoll called her number last week in a win over Sacred Hearts.
She came off the bench firing and hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. It's the beginning of goodness. Congratulations, Thunder #15!

Tuesday funday
Perfect conditions at Makiki Park for shooting drills. Court was covered by big-tree shade, soft trade winds and 5 Thunder working hard. Smoothing out the kinks in any shot is vital and crucial to long-term consistency and success. It was good to get the work in, and we finished with 10 minutes of solid conditioning work.
Lineup: Jhevin, Jayden, Jonah, Colin, Jance.

Monday funday
Windy afternoon at Makiki Park. We didn't waste time working on shooting drills because of the wind, but we got through part of my check list for this week. A lot of work with pressbreaker, step by step, totally breaking it down part by part. All 5 Thunder guys at practice today got plenty of reps with that. Make a mistake? Keep repping. That's the key to gaining confidence and success.
We got a lot of work done with defensive positioning again. We had a guys out of position, both newer and experienced Thunder, during recent games, so it's always important to get back to basics and straighten things out.
All in all, a solid practice, got lots of conditioning done in a practical way. Hopefully, our sick and injured Thunder return soon. Josh R is ill and Trinity got hurt (not sure when), according to Chaz, and went to the doctor on Monday. Prayers for good, quick healing for our keikis!
Lineup: Chaz, Micah, Jonah, Jhevin, Javan.

H1 Thunder 41, Aiea Blazers 33 (13U)
Aiea 13U League, quarterfinal round
Good win for our guys. Battled Aiea's big man again. This time, we focused on keeping him occupied constantly near the basket with boxouts and double teams and it worked. Big, big props to Micah, Javan and Jayden for doing good work against a talented 6-footer who did damage on us last time.
We were down early, but came back and took a 24-17 lead lead by halftime, playing smart basketball. Blazers tried to pressure us near halfcourt (similar to what Pearl City All-Stars did yesterday against our 'Pup Squad'), but Felcris, Colin, Javan and Jayden played smart and moved without the ball, made good passes and took quality shots. Our fastbreak was the key to getting a decent lead.
A little sloppy and rushed to start the second half, but once we settled down, we finished strong. Hopefully, our Pups watch and learn from our 'vets'.
Our semifinal game will be on Sunday, Feb. 8 — bye next week due to Super Bowl — at 10:40 am. We still have a game on Super Bowl Sunday, 12:00 pm at CAL League (Kilauea gym).
Lineup: Trinity, Jance, Walter, Chaz, Javan, Colin, Felcris, Micah, Jayden.
Josh R is sick today and couldn't play. Chris had football combine training. (The Nike Combine is next week.) Jonah had a CAL League game with his first team, Pearl City All-Stars. Ryan came to watch and cheer his Thunder on. He's out until late Feb with a fractured left wrist.
WE LOVE THIS GAAAME!!

Pearl City All-Stars 34, Pups 25 (13U)
(Not sure if that's the exact score. I'm uploading the video now.)
PAA 13U League, Palolo gym
We were down 10-2 at the start and stayed within 5-7 points for most of the game, until the final 2 minutes, I think. Our Pups played hard, but we're still an inexperienced team, overall, and Pearl City (and their double-roster hero, big Bailey Lee) played a smarter game. Until we play fundamentally sound basketball, it's going to be a season of ups and downs. So far, we're 3-2, not too bad, and there's so much room for improvement.
Our basketball IQ as a team (Pups) needs to get better, first and foremost, and that comes with reps, discipline and focus. Today, we were not focused at times, reverting back to some bad habits. My job is to end your bad habits and reinforce your fundamentals — hopefully by the time the playoffs start. We have two more regular-season games, then the first round of playoffs.
Lineup: Chaz, Jhevin, Walter, Trinity, Josh R, Jance, Jayden, Micah, Jonah.
MAHALO to Javan and Colin for shooting the game photo and supporting the Pups today.
Next: Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups at Aiea gym. 9:00 am - vs. Aiea Blazers, playoffs, Aiea League (13U)

FT Challenge: Sunday Feb 8
After talking with some of our 13U Thunder, there's work to be done before we do our Free-Throw Challenge fundraiser. All of the players I talked with at practice had either no sponsors so far, and the most was 3. So I'm pushing the FT Challenge back again to Sunday, Feb. 8, 2 pm at Makiki Park. (After our Aiea League playoff game.)
THIS PERTAINS TO ALL H1 THUNDER PLAYERS from 17U to 15U to 13U.
The goal? At least 10 sponsors for each player. So please, go hustle a little bit, make phone calls to aunties, uncles, grandpas, grandmas, older brothers and sisters, friends, co-workers, bosses... and ask them to sponsor you at least $1 per free throw. Check your e-mail. I'll resend the forms, and if you haven't sent me your email address, please let me know ASAP so I can send it.
This is for all our players, the ones who can afford uniforms and leagues, and the ones who can't. We have to work together to make this happen because guess what? Coach Paul ain't a millionaire, as you can guess, and without fundraising and working at it, we won't have leagues to play in and uniforms to wear. So let's do this and do it well.
Then we can seriously think about traveling this summer.

Stats: Pups vs Sharks-Blue (13U)
PAA 13U League, Kilauea gym
Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015
Thunder Pups 43, Sharks-Blue 41
H1 Thunder 'Pup Squad': fg 17-36 (.472) (3-pt 3-13 .231), ft 6-8 (.750), reb 26 (7 off), ast 10, to 20, stl 11, blk 4.
Sharks-Blue fg 15-47 (.319) (3-pt 7-20 .350), ft 4-7 (.571), reb 19 (9 off), ast 13, to 14, stl 15, blk 1.
Individual
Micah fg 7-13 (3-pt) 2-6), reb 4, ast 5, to 8, stl 3, pts 16
Josh R fg 1-3, ft 1-1, reb 4 (1 off), ast 2, to 3, stl 4, pts 3
Trinity fg 2-2, ft 2-3, reb 2 (2 off), to 3, pts 6
Chaz fg 0-2 (3-pt 0-2), pts 0
Jance fg 1-4, reb 5 (2 off), stl 1, pts 2
Jhevin fg 0-0, pts 0
Jonah fg 5-7 (3-pt 0-1, ft 3-4, reb 3 (2), ast 1, to 3, stl 1, blk 1, pts 13
Walter fg 0-0, pts 0
THE GOOD
>> Shot selection. I like the quality of the shots we took most of the time. We got a lot of good, open looks for easy layups and open threes. Having good shot selection doesn't necessarily mean we walk it up real slow. We will always push the ball and look for transition shots, especially open threes. But it's even more important that the shots be quality shots, not rushed, not in traffic. We got good ball movement most of the time.
>> Rebounding. Not bad. We outrebounded Sharks-Blue 26-19, but we still gave up a lot of offensive boards. Boxing out. We still haven't done it consistently, but this was a good step forward.
>> Free throws. We didn't take a lot of FTs, but we were 6-for-8, which is our best so far in PAA League.
>> Great start. We jumped to a 14-5 lead mostly off steals. Jonah was great on the front of our press, distracting passers and causing problems for the other team. He had one steal, but was directly responsible for several other ones because of his energy and the way his long arms
THE BAD
>> Defensive positioning. Our Sonic defense means our bottom man has to get out to the corner EVERY TIME. But we were tired, guys didn't get out there, and Sharks-Blue hit five 3-pointers, almost all from the corners, in the last 10 minutes to stay in the game. If we defend properly, we win by 10 or 15 instead.
>> Conditioning. Our lack of good positioning on defense is directly tied to our conditioning, so we did a lot of work there today (Thursday) at practice.
>> Turnovers. We had 20 turnovers, by far the worst we've done in a long time. We had a lot of mental errors against their press, simply from not looking at our target areas after the first pass in on our pressbreaker. HOWEVER, in the final 2 or 3 minutes, we broke their press every single time and got layups. A few times, it was off dribbling through the press, but most times it was from looking upcourt and feeding our teammates for easy layups. That showed a lot. We really matured as the game went along and broke the press easily, just like we should have from the first time they used it. We're learning.
Overall, a clutch performance by everyone. Micah scored 16 points, but also had to hold down the backcourt as the point guard against double teams. Josh, Trinity and Jonah had big baskets down the stretch when we broke the press.
I don't know if this means we're a good team yet. I just know it was a ragged, wild game and our guys kept their heads. That's a big step forward :)

VISUALIZE ... Box-out drills!
We may not work on them every day. Why? Because people get hurt sometimes. It's PHYSICAL.
But in your mind, remember the basics of boxing out and EXECUTE it from start to finish on every shot during a game or practice. Every shot!

A lot of heart, a lot of guts, a lot of clutch plays, a lot of mental errors. In the end, you guys earned a tough win over a talented, tall team that's probably as young and inexperienced as a whole as we are.
Players win games. You guys did it. Well done, and still getting better each day.
Lineup: Chaz, Jhevin, Trinity, Walter, Jonah, Jance, Micah, Jayden, Josh R.

Walter fg 0-0, ft 2-2, reb 2 (1), ast 1, pts 2
THE GOOD
>> 3-point shooting. We were 9-for-20, which is 45%. Excellent.
>> Good ball movement. We had 13 assists on our 19 baskets.
>> Steals. We had 11 thanks to a lot of good teamwork on our fullcourt and halfcourt pressure. Still working on seeing the ball and our man, but getting better.
THE BAD
>> Lack of boxouts. Though we were close on the boards — Voyagers outrebounded us just 23-21 even though they had a lot more height — we gave up 12 offensive rebounds.
>> Still messy on some inbounds plays (our Pups). That will improve with reps.
Overall, very similar to our earlier game that day against KKB (Aiea League 13U). Solid. Good composure, intensity, focus. Always room for improvement, but two well-deserved wins by our Thunder in two games.

Walter fg 2-3 (3-pt 2-3), to 1, stl 1, pts 6
THE GOOD
>> Shooting. We weren't great, but 35% from 3-point range (7-for-20) is solid. So is 69% at the free-throw line (11-for-16).
>> Ball movement. There's no exact measurement for the efficiency of quick ball movement, but our shooting percentages are a decent reflection of that. We had 12 assists on our 15 buckets, a very good percentage (80%).
>> Offensive boards. We had 14 on the offensive glass and overall outrebounded another much taller team 24-22.
>> With Ryan still on the shelf, we still had good fullcourt defensive pressure and came up with 12 steals.
THE BAD
>> Lack of box outs. We gave up 11 offensive boards, including seven in the second half.
>> Giveaways. A good assists-to-turnovers ratio is 3:1. We had 12 assists and 12 turnovers (1:1).
Overall, a solid, steady and hustling effort again by our Thunder.

THE GOOD

7 Thunder strong at Makiki Park on a sunny afternoon. A lot of defensive footwork. That's our cornerstone whether it's our older 13U or our 'Pup Squad'. Our defense needs to be consistently great. In time, for the Pups, the other aspects of the game will improve and catch up to our level of defense.
Lineup: Trinity, Javan, Jonah, Jance, Jhevin, Josh R, Colin.
Great work ethic, everybody!
Jayden was ill (asthma). Chaz and Micah were grounded. Chris Afe - football? Ryan injured (wrist). Felcris Ahadain and Josh M DE Jesus - school practice.
Next: Wednesday, 6:45 pm - Stretching/warmups at Kilauea gym outside courts. 7:45 pm - Thunder vs. Sharks-Blue (PAA 13U).

I can't remember the rest of the greatest speech of my lifetime, but those words are enough to inspire, spoken by a man who full well knew his life was constantly in danger. Thank you, Dr. King.
Monday funday
Hope everybody had a great time today resting up from school and work. We were 4 Thunder strong on this Martin Luther King holiday for optional shooting practice. Jance, Jhevin, Josh R and Trinity worked out for a solid 75 minutes at Makiki Park. At their age (13, 12), repetition and fundamentals work are key. It doesn't guarantee that anyone will become a great shooter, but it is always a step forward, getting better one day at a time, one rep at a time. One percent at a time. After a month, a year, two years, it adds up to incredible results for the guys who work hard on a daily basis year round.
We've had some amazing, awesome and hoopaholic Thunder players in the past few years. Many of them are playing varsity or JV basketball now. The ones who keep working gain the most benefits and give the most benefits to their teams. I couldn't be more proud of them, not just for their success, but for making their families proud.
But for today, I was happy just to see anyone at the outside court, having fun and sweating hard after 10, 50, 100, 200 shots. Lefties, one-handers, every shooting drill that had to do with form and the most basic shots of all. All it takes is one player working hard to inspire me. Seeing 4 was great.
Next: Tuesday, 4:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park. Practices on Wed, Thur also at 4:00 pm.

MLK Day
>> I have an optional shooting practice planned for 3:00 pm.
>> Also, Coach Larry suggested a pot luck. I'm all for this, but personally my budget is tiiiiiiiiight with the three leagues and new uniforms as big expenses. Some of our parents are chipping in, but there's still a major cost involved, so I can't spend the usual $200+ on steaks and other goodies. But if enough folks want to pot luck, post here or e-mail/text.
>> Felcris Ahadain and Josh M DE Jesus suggested beach. I can help with transportation, but only after I finish work around 1:00 pm.

MAHALOS OF THE DAY
Mahalo to Joel (Jonah's dad) and Jason (Jance's dad) for shooting video today! And thank you to the Ramos ohana for transporting Felcris Ahadainfrom Aiea to Kilauea gym.
Big mahalo to our favorite auntie, Mrs. Patti Chang, for donating generously to our H1 Thunder keiki again. Without you, it's very difficult to stay afloat with all these league fees and other costs. Mahalo, Mrs. Chang!!

CAL Intermediate Gold Division, Kilauea gym
(I'll post the score later after I get home and load the game video. I don't know what it was and it's too hard to tell from the video with my old eyes.)
Nice team effort in our CAL spring league opener. We didn't get too up or down, and that was important against another tall team. (They had a bunch of 5-11, 5-10 guys and we're 5-7 and under when Chris Afe isn't there.) They had solid players and though I'm pretty sure most people in the gym assumed the Thunder would lose, I'm glad we don't play according to anyone else's expectation level.
That was a solid effort from everybody, making more plus plays than minus plays, moving the ball, overcoming mistakes, hustling on defense and, a few times, actually boxing out.
Lineup: Josh R, Micah, Colin, Felcris, Javan, Josh DJ, Trinity, Jayden, Jhevin, Jance, Walter.
Everyone was stoked to see Ryan at both games (earlier game was at Aiea 13U League) today, cheering his teammates on. Also great to see Kyle and his folks (Coach Roy and Auntie Chit) there. I saw Chase after the game with his younger brother, Skyler. They said Gabriel was there, too.

Quick pit stop at home to pick up the CAL paperwork. Good team win today. A lot of hustling defense and smarter trapping (not hacking as much as before).
We were 11 strong today and everybody played hard, just the way Ryan would play. On the way to Kilauea gym now for the first CAL Intermediate Gold Division game of the season.
Lineup: Jonah, Chaz, Josh R, Micah, Colin, Felcris, Javan, Trinity, Jayden, Jance, Walter.

Blog makeover: H1 Thunder Basketball :)
It's been a long time coming. I hope everybody likes this look.
1. Easier to see. With a clear background, this should be easier for all of us to read.
2. New name. Nothing fancy, just a new blog address and blog title to match our team team. The only reason it was called Ala Wai Westheads is that originally I planned on using this blog to share notes with friends who played fantasy basketball.
3. The colors (teal blue, orange) match what we wear. I liked the old blog template, but this is better.
Enjoy!

Thursday funday
8 Thunder strong this afternoon at Makiki Park. One word: Hungry. Everybody was ready and working hard today, having some fun along the way. We got a lot of work in with fullcourt (time) layup drill. Jance had the fastest right-hand time at 5.2+ and Micah had the fastest lefty time (I think) at 5.3+.
We got lots of scrimmaging in, controlled with situationals. We've always done this in the past when we've had enough to scrimmage and it really helps when actual game situations happen.
Finished up with conditioning, and the guys who could stay afterward got a lot of 3-point challenge drills in. A good 25 minutes. Bino (Jhevin's dad) and Jason (Jance's dad) joined in for the last round.
Getting there one day at a time. Improve 1% every day working out on your own or with your team, and that adds up BIG TIME over a month, over one year.
Lineup: Chaz, Micah, Trinity, Jance, Josh R., Jonah, Walter, Jhevin.

Wednesday funday
Good, solid work today with 5 Thunder. Today's focus points: Shooting, Defensive Teamwork, Inbounds Plays.
It was cloudy and voggy, but the rain held up and we got a solid 80 minutes of work done. Repetition is a MUST, but with reps comes a lot of sluggishness and boredom at times. That's why leadership is important, both with encouraging our younger guys as well as staying focused as an example.
One thing that we constantly work on is practicing at game speed. There are times when we slow things down as a necessity during a learning moment. But the rest of the time, it's important that we go game speed. Practicing at less than game speed leads to problems come game time. That's why I emphasize it so much on offense and defense, but I understand how reps can make things feel dull at times.
GOOD WORK, THUNDER!

New uniforms: Chapter 2
I'm leaning away from tribal art for the new unis because until we actually have an expert who can explain whatever designs we like, I'm not comfortable and neither is Gerard. I've been in touch with Lehua (Kapaa and Kanehe's mom), who works at the Hawaiian Studies Dept. at UH and she recommends that we keep it simple. We want to be pono on this, so maybe soon or much later we'll find some kind of art that represents us. You know, a lightning bolt. Or something wordsy with names of all our players or the neighborhoods we live in (see below).
I prefer a lightning bolt. Or lots of small/tiny ones in a tribal STYLE. Moanalua used something like that for its helmets and jerseys with the letter 'M.' Florida State has something similar with the letter 'F' (lower case though). (See both below.)
ORIGINAL ART. Can someone draw a cool bunch of lightning bolts that our uniform guy can turn into a print for our new uniforms? If you can include 'H1' in it somehow and make it look awesome, please draw it and post the photo here, or send it to me via Facebook message. The art would replace the kapa design is drawn on the sketch below: on the side (piping) below the armpit and below the waist.
Time is short, but I know we have some artistic Thunder on this team.

The art would replace the kapa design is drawn on the sketch below: on the side (piping) below the armpit and below the waist.
Time is short, but I know we have some artistic Thunder on this team.

17U roster(s)? Who is in?
What I need to know very soon is this: Who is committed to playing in PAA 17U (probably a tournament, not full league) and NJB 17U (April)? Note: NJB's birthdate cutoff is Sept. 1. If you turn 18 before Sept. 1, can't play.
17U roster? (order of age)
Keanu Pratt?
Sierra Murobayashi
Kali‘a Mielke
Tanielu Mosi Afe
Chase Santos
Gabriel Porras
Kyle Moraga? (volleyball?)
Jared Elwin? (volleyball)
Joshua De Jesus
Kapaa Nishimura (volleyball, track and field)
Felcris Ahadain
Colin Ramos
Javan Montiho
Chris Afe
Micah Visoria
Ryan Higashionna
> Anyone else?
If we have enough players committed to either league 17U (or both), we'll go for that division. I know we can compete and win at that level. We've done it before (Kalani Varsity League). Just making sure we are prudent and don't waste money or time if guys simply are too busy with other sports, etc.
This goes also for CAL 17U (early summer) and Kalani Varsity League. Kalani's league allows us to double-roster on Thunder and school teams.

Reminder: Practice today is 4:00 pm
I have to work on the Windward side tonight, so we'll be done by 5:30 pm.
If you want to get a lot of shooting practice in, I'll leave some of the basketballs with one of our parents.
My apologies for the inconvenience.

17U, 15U, 13U rosters - Update 1/14
Need to start figuring out who will be playing in PAA 15U (late February) and 17U (if they have one). Also NJB All-Net 17U (maybe), 15U and 13U (maybe) in April. I do not want to enter 17U teams unless we have real commitment and enough players to be highly competitive. Otherwise, we'll stick with 15U, where most of our best players have been playing together the longest.
Issues:
> Money. Playing in PAA 17U (if they have one) means paying another $500. Playing in NJB 17U, that's $600. CAL may have 17U, but they don't start that division until their early summer (June) season. I'd have to ask each player/family to pay $25 or $30 for each league and I'll pay the other half.
> Scheduling. I'm pretty sure some of our guys will be playing with their schools' offseason teams in Ikaika League (spring) and that could conflict with our leagues. Ikaika League has a lot of school-based offseason teams.
So let me know which leagues and age groups you are committed to play in. I'm hoping that everybody is down for anything. We have a special group in 14U/15U and watching you guys play together is one of the funnest things in the world.
> Uniforms. If I haven't heard from you or your parent(s) yet, I need to know what size you want for the new uniform AND if you need a bigger size for the teal uniform (re-order). Cost is $30 per uniform if you can afford it and help this old coach out. I'm sending in the order in the next day or two.

I want to consider 17U because it's good to play the best teams, especially when we have so many varsity and varsity-quality players. PAA allows you to play in more than one age division. NJB does not.

If you have borrowed a uniform (or two) in the past, I need those back.
Currently playing: Aiea 13U, PAA 13U leagues. Next: CAL Intermediate.

NJB 17U - Maybe, maybe not. Players can't play in two age divisions at NJB. Boo.
NJB 13U - I'm 50/50 on this since Micah and Little Josh will turn 14 in the spring. The birthdate cutoff for NJB is Sept. 1, which means Jhevin and Trinity will be too old. We'll have a decent team, the same guys playing in PAA League right now. But we'll see if they're still dedicated and working hard the next few months.
Ryan Higashionna (if he's not playing 15U)
Walter Berthold
Jayden Ramos
Jonah Gormley?
Jance Apuya

If we have some high-quality, highly-dedicated additions, maybe we play in NJB 13U.
Then it's CAL 13U, 15U (and maybe 17U) again in early June. Also in early June, Maryknoll JV League (if they invite us back as defending champions) and Kalani Varsity League (we've been in their last three leagues). Then travel team for 14U and/or 15U. We'll see which group is coming to practice and working together.

Walter fg 0-1 (3-pt 0-1), reb 1, to 1, pts 0.
Warriors #34 fg 6-14 (3-pt 1-3), ft 1-1, reb 6 (2 off), ast 1, to 7, stl 3, pts 14.
THE GOOD
> Defensive on-ball pressure. Even with Ryan (injury) out, we came up with 15 steals, including six by Josh. Most of those steals resulted from good traps that led to bad passes by the Warriors.
> Offensive attack. Season-high 21 points by Micah, who had major duties as our point guard and scoring guard, playing all 30 minutes in an Ironman effort. We did a great job penetrating, especially with Micah at the point against their man-to-man defense. He was relentless, patient and aggressive. Jonah was key with a big offensive board for a three-point plate late in the game.
> Rebounding. We outrebounded the Warriors 20-14. Decent job of boxing out by our Pups!
THE BAD
> Long range. We missed all 12 of our 3-point shots. They were mostly good looks, but we need more reps every day before, during and after practice. Hopefully, Sunday's optional shooting practice helps the four Thunder who were there working hard for almost 2 hours.
> Defensive responsibilities. A lot of guys didn't know where to go when the game began even though we went over assignments before the game. Focus, focus, focus.
Overall, a nice team win, playing together, hustling and sharing the ball. Everyone needs to be aggressive without losing floor vision. I still see a few of us putting our head down as we drive to the basket, unaware of the double or triple team coming. Teammates are open. Be prepared.

Sunday funday
A day of rest. A day of shooting (optional shooting practice). We were 4 strong at Makiki Park this afternoon. Sunny, slight breeze, almost perfect conditions. Especially after the sun dipped behind the giant trees and gave the court nice shade.
We started with the basics of shooting and didn't stop (except for water breaks, of course) for 1 hour and 45 minutes. By the time we got to 3-point challenge drills much later, they were on fire. Six treys from each of the first three spots (60-second limit as a group).
It was good, hard work and everybody was there to get better. Nothing more I could hope for. Reps make all the difference. Now if all our Thunder get those 200+ shots and 50+ free throws in at least five days a week, something really special can happen for them this year. No substitute for sweat and reps.
Lineup: Jance, Colin, Jayden, Trinity.

Thunder Pups 38, Warriors 31 (13U)
PAA League, 13-Under Division. Lanakila gym.
Good job tonight, Thunder Pup Squad. With Ryan injured (wrist) from his school game earlier today, everybody had to dig deep and pitch in. Micah was an Ironman tonight, played every minute. His experience and wisdom are HUGE for us, and he was great going to the basket against the Warriors' man-to-man defense.
We had some nice plays tonight. My favorite was the pass on the backdoor cut for a layup (Fohawk). We also had a lot of hustle plays with Little Josh in the middle of most of them. He hit the floor at least two times for loose balls. The rest of us should join him on those every time.
Jonah played big, no surprise. He was superb on the high post/screen and he was tough inside on the boards, and he was solid on our fullcourt and halfcourt pressure. We got a lot of contribution from everybody — Walter, Jayden, Jance, Trinity, Jhevin, Chaz — and hung on for a tough win.
We led 28-20, gave up eight points in a row, then took a five-point lead and hung on. Good composure down the stretch. Still plenty to work on, but I'm happy for you guys. You're reaping the rewards of your daily hard work.
Next: Sunday, 3:00 pm — Optional shooting practice at Makiki Park. Originally scheduled for 4:00 pm, but my nephew is leaving for college and his mom scheduled a dinner for 5:00.
No practice on Monday. It's going to be Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks playing for the national championship that afternoon. I know a few of our dads plan on staying home to watch that, so no sense in practicing. I'll be watching the game, too. MM8 is truly great.
I'll post the rest of our practice schedule for next week soon. Waiting to get my work schedule. I know we don't have another PAA 13U game until Wednesday, Jan. 21. We will have an Aiea 13U League game next Sunday (11:30 am), and probably a CAL Intermediate Division game that afternoon.
MAHALO to Bino (Jhevin's dad) for getting the team warmed up before the game. I had to work and got there just before the game.

Friday funday
We were 7 Thunder strong this afternoon at Makiki Park. Weather is almost back to normal, but we've gotten big tree shade over the court the past few weeks, real nice.
Got a chance to do a lot of triple-threat/jab step work today, a good 20 or so minutes, nonstop. Then we hit the check list of stuff to work on. BOXING OUT at the top. Mahalo to Bino and Jayna for stepping in and helping us. The Pups were on the court today, and after giving up a ton of offensive rebounds last night, they did much better today against the likes of some 200-plus pounders like me and Bino.
When they put their minds to it, they do a solid job of boxing out. We just have to keep repping this until it becomes automatic for all five defenders at all times.
Also got a lot of halfcourt execution work in, plus one of our inbounds plays. Reps matter, reps matter, reps matter. Always have, always will.
Lineup: Walter, Jance, Jhevin, Little Josh, Chaz, Micah, Trinity.

Also got a lot of halfcourt execution work in, plus one of our inbounds plays. Reps matter, reps matter, reps matter. Always have, always will.
Lineup: Walter, Jance, Jhevin, Little Josh, Chaz, Micah, Trinity.

THE GOOD
>> Offensive rebounding, especially by Micah, who had eight.
>> Defensive pressure. Very good, almost great. We had 13 steals and did a good job of trapping without fouling. Much better in fullcourt and halfcourt pressure.
>> Pressbreaker. By our starters, it was flawless. We scored easy points.
THE BAD
>> Defensive rebounding. We allowed 11 offensive boards, including 10 in the second half. Our reserves did NOT box out at all and got punished.
>> Pressbreaker. Our reserves didn't run pressbreaker. Seems like whatever we practiced was completely forgotten by some of our Pups.
>> Free throws. Just 2-for-9. At least 50 a day will cure that.
>> Turnovers. 17 total. Way too much, mostly from sloppy passing. We can do well against any team if we have less than 10 turnovers. But having more turnovers (17) than baskets (14) is just silly.
Overall, a solid effort against a tall frontcourt. Good ball movement, mostly good push on the fastbreak. A good first win in PAA 13U.

Seattle Reign
Congratulations to Chris Afe, who caught a 30-yard TD pass and made a TD-saving tackle on a kickoff for the Hawaii squad that beat Washington 30-16 last week at the Tanoa Bowl in Seattle, Wash.
Chris was a bit jet-lagged after returning home and there was little rest for the weary. He played with his H1 Thunder (13U) on Sunday, helping us rally past the Aiea Blazers 47-44. He had 11 points and anchored the middle, the first time in ages we've had a real big man (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) on the court.
Chris is in combine training this week. Not his favorite thing, running those L-drills, T-drills, shuttle runs and all, but he's there at the field working hard. WAY TO GO, CHRIS!

PAA 13U League, Kilauea gym
We played some good defense, missed a ton of layups and rebounded pretty well. Struggled to finish on follow shots against their tall guys.
We led 13-4 at halftime, and the first 5 did a nice job starting the second half. We were up 27-7 when I left our reserve unit in for most of the final 7 or 8 minutes. Our first win of the PAA 13U season. A lot of growth still coming.
A lot of fundamental errors — not running our inbounds play, throwing chest passes in traffic (easily stolen), not running our pressbreaker — but overall, good job, Thunder!

THE GOOD
> Very good ball movement and patience. Sometimes on the ball reversal, we have open shots on the top of the key, but that's minor. We were already doing a good job moving the ball, and Chris on the post gets us more very good passing. We had 16 assists on our 20 baskets. That's excellent.
> Offensive rebounding. We had eight on the offensive board, which is good. Four them by Colin.
> Good shots. We had almost ALL good to very good looks. I don't mind misses when they are good quality shots. The more the better!
> Steals. We still reach a little too much instead of trapping, but most of the time we played good team defense and got 21 steals.
THE BAD
> A lot of missed layups. That'll improve with reps. Chris is finally back from a long football season (and an injury), and he'll shake off the rust over time.
> The Blazers shot better than 50% from the field, including 11-for-17 in the first half. Most of that is because they shot really well in their home gym, but we can do a better job challenging shots. It wasn't bad on our part, just could be better.
> 3-point shooting. It wasn't really bad, but it's the first time our percentage from 3-point range didn't improve over the previous week. Still, 5-for-21 isn't too bad. We're getting more reps at practice.
> Box outs. Still lots of room for improvement here, especially after that first shot. We let Aiea's tall guy get second and third shots instead of boxing him out after the first one.
All in all, a solid effort against a very solid team. Room to get better, yes. But excellent defense, ball movement and shooting down the stretch. Clutch play to win it with the inbounds pass by Ryan and the shot by Felcris.

TEAM: fg 11-51 (3-pt 3-26), ft 1-2, reb 25 (12 off), ast 8, to 12, stl 14, blk 1.
Kings: fg 15-41 (3-pt 2-6), ft 1-2, reb 34 (11 off), ast 9, to 21, stl 8, blk 2.
INDIV:
Micah fg 5-19 (3-pt 1-9), ft 1-2, reb 6 (4 off), ast 4, to 5, stl 5, pts 12.
Ryan fg 3-12 (3-pt 1-8), ft 0-0, reb 8 (2 off), ast 4, to 0, stl 6, pts 7.
Josh R. fg 0-2, ft 0-0, reb 2 (2 off), ast 0, to 3, stl 1, pts 0.
Trinity fg 0-0, ft 0-0, reb 1, ast 0, to 2, stl 0, pts 0.
Chaz fg 0-1 (3-pt 0-1), ft 0-0, reb 0, ast 0, to 0, stl 0, pts 0.
Jayden fg 1-7 (3-pt 1-5), ft 0-0, reb 2, ast 0, to 0, stl 0, blk 1, pts 3.
Jance fg 0-2 (3-pt 0-1), ft 0-0, reb 1 (1 off), ast 0, to 1, stl 1, blk 0, pts 0.
Jhevin fg 0-0, ft 0-0, reb 0, ast 0, stl 0, blk 0, pts 0.
Jonah fg 2-8 (3-pt 0-2), ft 0-0, reb 5 (3 off), ast 0, to 1, stl 1, pts 4.
THE GOOD
> Defensively, we forced the Kings into 21 turnovers. We had 14 steals.
> We moved the ball well at times and got 26 3-point attempts, and all them were open looks. We'll shoot better most of the time.
> We had 12 offensive boards against a tall team.
> I wanted our best shooters to get a certain number of shot attempts. I wanted at least 15 for Micah and he shot 19 times. I wanted at least 10 for Ryan and he shot 12 times. Everyone has to stay aggressive with the ball, but when Micah and Ryan are hitting shots, everyone else gets more open looks.
THE BAD
> We got killed in the first half, giving up a ton of fastbreak points because nobody stopped the ball. Correctable.
> We shot 21% from the field. Everybody needs to take 200+ shots every day. Minimum.
> We had more turnovers (12) than baskets (11).
> We gave up 11 offensive rebounds. Need to box out.
> The video shows that we are very slow when we have subs in the game. Everyone needs to get in shape, so if you don't have a game or practice, please get some running in. At least 30 minutes a day.
