Everyone refueled at lunch and we played well for most of this game. Defensively, solid pressure and good close-outs on their shooters, and our fastbreak was roaring. We led by 20 at one point, a bunch of great plays and great passing, and some hot 3-point shooting by Anu and Kapaa.
Then came a lot of sloppiness against the Tar Heels' 2-2-1 press. Instead of moving the ball, cutting in our pressbreaker, a lot of guys got silly, tried to dribble through double teams, tried doing NBA moves — high school referees LOVE blowing the whistle on anything close to a carry or illegal dribble (or illegal screen) — and it cost us.
Tar Heels cut the lead down to 3 before we finally regained our senses, took care of the ball and pulled away at the end. A good team win, but lack of fundamentals leads to big lapses and we're fortunate we came through defensively.
Odd note: Manoa is playing for the Tar Heels, but didn't suit up against us since he normally plays with us in leagues.
Lineup: Kanehe Nishimura, Gabriel Porras, Kali'a Mielke, Joshua de Jesus, Hsien Pascua, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Keanu Pratt, Sisifo Lauvao, Kyle Moraga, Kapaa Nishimura.
This game capped our busy Sunday: three wins, no losses, one game postponed. More importantly, we're getting better, smarter, faster.
