Our 15U, which started with all 13U players, lost to the Laie Raiders 34-31. We led 11-2 and fell behind after the Raiders hit a few threes late in the first half.
This was the first time I can remember us losing both games when we've had overlapping times. In fact, when 12U and 13U had to split up for three or four weeks in a row last month, we usually swept our opponents.
The 15U game: I played our older guys immediately after they arrived from St. Francis. Turns out I should've let them rest for the rest of the half. They were fatigued and what was a 15-11 Thunder lead turned into a 24-16 halftime deficit.
The 13U guys (and Sierra) had done pretty well, good ball movement, solid defense/pressing. But I underestimated how tired the older 15U boys would be. We had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Josh's 3-point shot missed.
Even with the loss, it's another valuable experience - game experience - for our younger players. For the older 15U guys, it's their first loss in about a month. They won their last six games at NJB All-Net. We just had too many unforced errors in the second half, a lot of bad passes against Laie's 2-3 zone. We'll work on that tomorrow at practice (McCully).
Don't forget, 15U, there's a game on Monday, 6:20 pm, Kliauea gym.
Final note: Thanks everybody for stepping up to help both teams play today. With so many guys in 17U out, we had to mix and match to field teams at both sites. Ideally, our 15U guys will just stay at the 15U games (CAL, Pearl City JV), but Brent, Tone, Triton and Sifo came through this morning to help out Isaiah and Haka.
The good news is, there aren't any more directly overlapping games on the current schedule of games (of all the leagues we're in). (There is a minor 15U/17U overlap on Thursday, June 13.)
WE LUB THIS GAME!
