Before another fun weekend...

If it seems to our players, coaches and families like we've played a lot of games this year... well, by my count, we've played 62 games total, from the older boys to the younger guys and girls.

I don't think we ever played that many in a year. Part of that is because we were blessed with the opportunity to play in TWO high school summer leagues. I hope that happens again next year, but we were asked because other (high school) teams dropped out. I hope we did enough to leave a positive impression on the leagues (Kalani Varsity, Maryknoll JV) to earn another invitation next year.

Another part of the massive number of games is our 13U. This is our first year at that age group and it's turned out to be a humongous blessing to me.

The total is 62 games (or so, I should double check), and every game has been videotaped thanks in large part to our parents, including Daniel Pimentel, Roy Moraga and more. We've still got this weekend's Aiea 16U tourney (five games), next week's NJB Summer Classic (17U and 12U equals 10 more games). Then it's the final few playoff games for our 15U and 13U in the Compete & Learn League. By mid- or late August, we'll be playing 13U, 15U and 17U in NJB All-Net League, 13U and 15U in CAL, and 17U in Pa'a. That's the plan, anyway. If we lose too many players to football, we'll pare back.

If you average out the cost of playing in tournaments and leagues, it comes out to about $60 per game for us as a team. Tournaments, you play only a handful of games and the cost is anywhere from $250 (Aiea) to $325 (NJB). Leagues, we usually get 10 games for the cost ($250 for Aiea, $500 for NJB, $400 for CAL with a stoppage of the clock on free throws, $440 for Pa'a). Add up the entry fees with the cost of jerseys ($525 for a recent order of 15 new ones), the player insurance (for NJB), post-game meals and everything else, and it gets very pricey.

That's why the fundraisers are so important, and the help of each parent and player is vital. Auntie Char is spending a lot of time, effort and energy on the Car Wash. Thank God for her and all our parents!

Coach Bo, Coach Larry and I have been available, so being sure that we have coaches at practice and games hasn't been an obstacle yet. There are a lot of dads who have helped out, but everyone's busy working and ushering their kids all over the place to and from their sports. So with Bo out (Kaimuki High School football) this fall, Larry and I will have a lot on our plates. Things work out, so I'm not worried. Yet.

For now, let's enjoy the weekend, and hopefully I can catch up on all our game videos someday. I LUB THIS GAME.
