Travel options #7, #8, #9

OPTION #7 - Big West Officials Varsity Tournament, Kona, July 23-25. Pros: Low entry fee. Cons: We'd be playing varsity teams, which is good for competition, not our best age group. I checked on hotel rates, super high. Kona Seaside $147/night - with a discount. Total cost: $3,500.

OPTION #8 - World Youth Basketball Summer Tournament, 14U Division, Kona, July 26-30. Opening ceremony July 25. Pros: Teams from Bay Area, L.A., Hilo, Kauai, Kona. Also, we could stay for just 2 or 3 days (leave on July 28) and get all 5 games done, which would save us money. Cons: Entry fee is steep ($500). Total cost $4,000.

OPTION #9 - Combined Kona tournaments, Big West Officials Varsity Tournament July 23-25, WYBT 14U Tournament July 26-28* (leave WYBT round-robin tourney 2 days early). Pros: Lots of games in a 5-day period (July 23-28), some mainland competition (WYBT), good varsity competition (Big Island). Also, much cheaper than playing on the mainland (air fare). Pools and beaches aplenty in Kona. Cons: Added cost is reasonable, but still higher than a shorter stay. Total cost $5,000.

Options 7, 8 and 9 are more costly than I was hoping. Turns out the high nightly hotel-room rate is a deal killer, costing almost as much as air fare ($170 round trip). Unless we camp out at Hapuna Beach Park for free. I like hotel beds better.

Options 1-6 were listed in this post on Wednesday. Mainland travel. The best competition. Bigger costs (air fare).
