Alii 52, H1 Thunder 48 (V)

Ikaika Varsity Division, Palolo gym
Bracket B quarterfinals

Mahalo to the parents who endured brutal traffic (rain/Lakers game). For Jayden and his dad, it was a 2-hour trip from Ewa. And that was after Ray went from Kaneohe to Manoa to Ewa. THANK YOU PARENTS smile emoticon

Mahalo to Mrs. Chang and Sanford for supporting our Thunder keiki once again. Thanks for being positive and lifting us up even though we struggle in these older divisions (Varsity and JV).

We played well tonight until the final minutes.
Good team defense for 3/4ths of the game.
Good active energy for 3/4ths of the game.
Good passing for 3/4ths of the game.
Mosi had a handful of steals, scoring off them to help us jump to a nice lead.
Last 1/4th of the game, we lost an 11-point lead.

We over dribbled against their 2-2-1 press.

We dribbled 1-on-3, lost the ball over and over instead of passing and cutting for easy layups

Most of us were too tired to run the press breaker for layups.

Tenchi fouled out with about 4 minutes left.
We still do not use fakes enough against zone and wing pressure.

I repeated myself over and over about court vision, keeping our eyes up in press breaker. Passing and cutting. Dribbling back a step or two against traps instead of forcing the dribble. We didn't run our diagonal cut once.
We probably had 6 or 7 turnovers in the final 2 minutes. It was a classic demonstration of lack of execution. Instead of getting 10 easy points on layups and winning by 15 or 20, we didn't trust each other quite enough.

It's disappointing, but I know this: If we practice 5-on-5 we get the press breaker down like we did before. But without those full team practices, we're a shell of how good we can be against full court pressure. We're good enough to beat the best teams in this league, like Mid-Pacific (No. 1 seed). When we execute. When we practice. Simple as that. I''m just hoping that we get back to that one day, at least on Sundays. (We had 8 at practice two Sundays ago and 4 this past Sunday.)

That would make next summer's mainland trip worthwhile. We won't travel until we get back to that. Striving every day for greatness. The complacent, mediocre mindsets will change or be left home.

Lineup: Jayden Ramos, Jhevin Mercado, Jance, Jonah, Sierra, Radyn, Kali'a Mielke, Mosi Afe, Tenchi Robinson.

Varsity - Next game is Sunday, 9:30 am, (CAL League) at Kilauea gym against Kaimuki.
