Aiea League is running a 13-Under again this winter. The league will be on Sundays (like last season) and the cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2015. So players need to be 13 as of that date. We have five players who meet that criteria. Please let me know 1) if you want to join this league, and 2) if you can bring some friends to join the team and they're 13 or younger.
We need to decide on this within a few days because Aiea League only has a few spots still open for teams. Mahalo!
Aiea 13U League
Begins Nov. 22
Games on Sundays at Aiea District Park gym
Birthdate: Must be 13 as of Dec. 31, 2015
In event of three-way tie, regular-season total points scored is tiebreaker.
2015-16 Winter
13U
# Name Gr Birthdate Age as of 12/31 School
12 Jance Apuya 8th 05/19/02 13 Kalakaua
14 Skylar Kawakami-Bechtel 8th 13 Kaimuki
17 Jayden Ramos 8th 10/15/02 13 Ewa Makai
29 Matthew Pascual 8th 01/20/02 13 Moanalua
34 Chaz Enos 7th 11/28/03 11 Stevenson
** Malosi Viena's dad, Dean, said he'll play. Jayden will be gone for two weeks in December (mainland trip), so we really need to have a reliable 9-10 players who will practice and be there for every game. Anything less, no go.
It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

Wednesday Funday
Four Thunder strong: Jance, DJ, Skylar and Jason.
Got a lot of ballhandling work done. These guys don't back down from working on their skills whether it involves their strengths or weaknesses. A lot of on-ball pressure work against the ballhandling -- which our younger AND older players really need.
Also got lots of shooting reps, though it's not hard to see that everybody's not getting enough DAILY repetitions. No substitute for reps and hours of shooting. None.
No practice until next Tuesday (if I don't have any work) or Wednesday. WE LOVE THIS GAME!!

2016 H1 Thunder Player Availability
Tonight's game was the last of our "season", which began last November (2014) with the Aiea 13U League. I got to see our younger guys (Pups) mature and grow both on the court and on. Our older guys got to play a lot, too, being an older team in the spring/summer JV leagues and the youngest team in the fall Varsity leagues. So many busy schedules, but this love for the game and their teammates rules.
We ended up playing around 140 games, my guess. It'll take some time and careful checking to see what our final overall record was. Whatever it is, the work doesn't stop. Never does. Reps and rest, preparing day by day. Proper nutrition and hydration. Proper conditioning. Building muscle and explosiveness. Honing skills. For our Thunder who embrace the grind and love working to become better players and better teammates, this is a great time to be young and dedicated.
God has been good to us over the past 12 months, over the past 5 years. Keep moving forward, follow that game plan you write down and post on the wall. Keep a record of your daily achievements, every little win, every rep. It all counts and it all matters. If you don't plan it and record and strive for more, nobody else will do it for you.
I hope to hear from everybody in these next two weeks about the spring and summer seasons, plus travel plans. As I mentioned after tonight's game, I need a real count of who will attend games, and those who can make it to games and practices, and those who can't make it to anything until summer, or none of the above. Hopefully, our Thunder family sticks together and reaps the rewards and fun of playing year-round regardless of whether we win championships or battle as the youngest teams.
Please be prepared, everybody who plans to play, and everybody who travels or not. We will have fundraisers coming up soon, continue through the winter, and go extra once spring arrives to raise everything we need and more to pay for league fees, uniforms, travel costs. Micah wants hoodies. Can do. We just put in the work.

Ikaika League, Varsity Division, Aiea gym
Two young teams going at it. Our team was younger, but we were stronger under the basket with Tenchi Robinson, who blocked a lot of shots, and Kali‘a.. Good, consistent and smart play on both ends. Really liked the communication defensively as we adjusted to the Trojans' long-range gunners. Mosi Afe and Michael were strong today on both ends, using speed and control better and better each game out. Nice work from our 8th and 9th graders, too. Sierra was on fire from long range in the first half with three treys. Good team win!
Lineup: Sierra, Jance, Jonah, Jayden Ramos, Ryan, Tenchi, Kali'a Mielke, Michael, Mosi Afe.
Next: Last Ikaika Varsity division game is on Tuesday at Palolo. Game time and opponent TBA.

Very poised and consistent performance by our 9th and 8th graders, led by our only soph Kali'a Mielke. Any 8 am game can be a challenge, but everybody who made it to the game was there on time to warm up and stretch early. Stunnahz were taller, and some of those 6-foot kids are athletic. But they had just five players today and we pulled away during the heat wave in the second half.
That was the last JV game of the Ikaika fall season. We were very young, but we got better week by week.
MAHALO to Colin Micah Ramos for shooting the game video. He didn't play because of an injured finger.
Lineup: Jance, Jonah, Jason, Jayden Ramos, Ryan, Micah Visoria, Felcris Ahadain, Kali‘a.

Thunder Weekend
Three games in the next 24 hours. Tonight, H1 Thunder vs. McKinley (varsity) at Kilauea gym, 6:20 pm.
BIG MAHALO to Mrs. Patti Chang and Sanford Chang for bringing water again last week, and to Mrs. Chang for another generous donation. Without her help, it's difficult to cover the cost of league fees since not all our players can afford to chip in. It's amazing to see how much she loves our Thunder keiki!

Conditioning, pressbreak drills, 4-on-4 fullcourt best-of-7 series. Good work Thunder! 120 minutes of labor and love. The team of Jason, Jance, DJ and Skylar rallied from down 3-1 to beat the team of Micah, Chaz, Matthew and Walter 4-3.

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-nbas-next-shooting-revolution-has-already-been-televised/
Long before the Golden State Warriors were splashing threes from long range, the H1 Thunder were excelling at small ball, pressing foes like LMU in its heyday. I still don't know another 13U/Intermediate team that has made 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 treys per game with regularity like our guys did in the past two years. Hopefully we get back to that with Sunday practices and daily shooting reps.
For the younger guys, that will be through the fall and winter as the Intermediate and Elementary (and 4th grade) leagues start up their new seasons in January. For our older (high school) players, that will be in late February when they finish their school seasons. (Aiea had its Intermediate League in November and December last year. I'll see if they have another one this winter.)
I don't know exactly how many Varsity/JV guys we'll have back by then, but it needs to be at a decent number (8-10 per team) if we're going to peak by the time we travel to the mainland.

Thunder 50, Kaimuki Bulldogs 48 (V)
CAL League, Varsity Division, Kilauea gym
Tenchi Robinson made a putback layup with :00 left to win the game for the Thunder.
Tough battle. We had an eight- or nine-point lead early off our fullcourt pressure, but couldn't sustain it. Kaimuki hit some open 3-pointers in the second half and took the lead in the final quarter and it was back and forth. They had just six players, but it was a solid six. I think Coach Greydon's team has good potential for this coming OIA season, especially when they get their football guys like Keanu Pratt.
For us, it was a good game by our older guys like Mosi Afe and Chase Santos. Radyn got there late, but he got some key minutes for us in the second half and we got solid play from Colin Micah Ramos, Micah Visoriaand our other ninth and eighth graders.
Our fundamentals still need lots of work, getting better a bit every time. Missed a bunch of short-range shots, turned the ball over on easy scoring situations, just simply lack of reps and that's easily fixable for the guys willing to put in the time.
We are still probably the youngest team in all varsity and JV leagues. I think by spring, we'll be sounder in fundamentals and having a lot more fun. I just wonder about availability. A lot of guys are planning to play volleyball or run track. We'll figure it out.

Owls 45, H1 Thunder 41, 2 OT (JV)
Ikaika League, JV division, consolation playoffs
Good battle by our 9th and 8th graders plus 1 (Kalia). Small ball vs tall, older team.
We trailed by 4-8 points until Felcris tied the game with a baseline runner with around :03 left in regulation. Then Micah hit a running bank shot with less than 1 second to go in OT to tie it up again. Second OT was sudden death: first team to score 3 points wins. MPI made a FT. We got the ball and Kali‘a was just a little bit long on his open 3 from the top. MPI got the rebound and scored on the fastbreak to win.
Collin plaayed a good game for his school team.

All-Blacks: Seeking Inspiration
A few of our players have asked about a new black uniform, which I would not mind. But first, believers of all-black unis, please provide INSPIRATION. Unless you have a clean, sharp and meaningful design, I'm not interested in a generic black uniform like most teams have. I'm leaning toward a lava-related theme in some way. Send me your ideas so we can get a head start on ordering new uniform sets from our good friend, Arthur.
Wednesday Funday
Got there late because work ran behind schedule but we had fun. Jason brought his two younger brothers. Jojo is 11 and Javen is 8. Good shooting still work and very intense 2-on-2 tournament.
Lineup: DJ, Skylar Kawakami-bechtel, Jance, Jason, Javen, Jojo.
No practice until Sunday. I'm covering football games thur fri sat.

Bracket B quarterfinals
Mahalo to the parents who endured brutal traffic (rain/Lakers game). For Jayden and his dad, it was a 2-hour trip from Ewa. And that was after Ray went from Kaneohe to Manoa to Ewa. THANK YOU PARENTS smile emoticon
Mahalo to Mrs. Chang and Sanford for supporting our Thunder keiki once again. Thanks for being positive and lifting us up even though we struggle in these older divisions (Varsity and JV).
We played well tonight until the final minutes.
Good team defense for 3/4ths of the game.
Good active energy for 3/4ths of the game.
Good passing for 3/4ths of the game.
Mosi had a handful of steals, scoring off them to help us jump to a nice lead.
Last 1/4th of the game, we lost an 11-point lead.
We over dribbled against their 2-2-1 press.
We dribbled 1-on-3, lost the ball over and over instead of passing and cutting for easy layups
Most of us were too tired to run the press breaker for layups.
Tenchi fouled out with about 4 minutes left.
We still do not use fakes enough against zone and wing pressure.
I repeated myself over and over about court vision, keeping our eyes up in press breaker. Passing and cutting. Dribbling back a step or two against traps instead of forcing the dribble. We didn't run our diagonal cut once.
We probably had 6 or 7 turnovers in the final 2 minutes. It was a classic demonstration of lack of execution. Instead of getting 10 easy points on layups and winning by 15 or 20, we didn't trust each other quite enough.
It's disappointing, but I know this: If we practice 5-on-5 we get the press breaker down like we did before. But without those full team practices, we're a shell of how good we can be against full court pressure. We're good enough to beat the best teams in this league, like Mid-Pacific (No. 1 seed). When we execute. When we practice. Simple as that. I''m just hoping that we get back to that one day, at least on Sundays. (We had 8 at practice two Sundays ago and 4 this past Sunday.)
That would make next summer's mainland trip worthwhile. We won't travel until we get back to that. Striving every day for greatness. The complacent, mediocre mindsets will change or be left home.
Lineup: Jayden Ramos, Jhevin Mercado, Jance, Jonah, Sierra, Radyn, Kali'a Mielke, Mosi Afe, Tenchi Robinson.

This Week (Oct 6-11) UPDATE as of 10/7
Our Ikaika Varsity loss on Tuesday means we will have a consolation game on Sunday, so please note this in your calendars. I texted Clay Tang that we already have a CAL Varsity game scheduled on Sunday morning. Hopefully, there won't be any overlap. But be prepared to play 2 Varsity games on Sunday.
Wed, 4:30 pm - Practice.
Thur, 4:30 pm - Practice.
Sat, Oct 10, 8:50 am vs Owls Ikaika JV Division, consolation playoffs, Salt Lake gym
Sun Oct 11, 9:30 am vs Kaimuki (CAL Varsity Division), Kilauea gym
** Sun Oct 11, time and opponent TBA, Ikaika Varsity Division playoffs, Bracket B, Aiea gym
Sunday Funday

Chaz and Micah just got here.
Got a lot of shooting in, then 8-ball pick/roll work with corner 3a.

We played hard. They played herd.
We made big shots. They made big shots.
We simply had too many mental errors and beat ourselves.
I instructed Jayden and Ryan to score 20 points apiece to give us our best chance. They were on pace with that until the second half. We had just 6 players and did our best despite fatigue. Jance hit two big 3s to give us a 4-point lead with about 2 minutes left. But selfishness and mental errors on our part cost us the lead.
Walter drove for a layup to tie the game with time running out in regulation. In the OT free throw shootout, our first two shooters missed. Their guys made 2 of 3 FTs to seal the win.
The practice court is our classroom and the lack of team practices has really stunted our basketball IQ as a team and as individuals. Not to mention our fundamentals like FT shooting.
Pups have hit a ceiling. The desire to show up for games is there. We need practice as a team.
Lineup: Chaz, Matthew, Jance, Ryan, Jayden, Walter.
Kilauea gym

Sunday Varsity/JV Practice
Sunday, 4:30 pm — Varsity/JV practice. I specifically pushed last Sunday's practice back to 4:30 from 2:00 at the request of one of our players, who then didn't show up. If 4:30 is still too early, please let me know. Mahalo.
FOR THE GUYS WHO TRULY LOVE THIS GAME AND THEIR TEAMMATES. Actions vs. Words. Put the controller down for a minute, bring your best to every practice, every game.

Alii 46, H1 Thunder 29 (JV)
Ikaika League, JV Division quarterfinals
Salt Lake gym
Good hustle, a lot of desire. Down 20-13 at the half. Missed at least 10 or 12 free throws for the entire game.
Alii played a solid game. Not a deep team, not a great shooting team. But they made plays and we looked like the youngest team in the league, which we are. We looked like a team that hasn't fully shown up for a team practice since May, which we are.
Practice makes perfect. How do we get back to what we were in the spring and early summer?
Lineup: Jhevin, Chaz, Jason, Jayden, Jance, Jonah, Ryan, Micah, Kali‘a.
Next: Sunday, 2:30 pm — H1 Thunder vs. Team Hustle, CAL 13U Gold Division, Kilauea gym. Stretching/warmups 1:30 pm.

WE LUB THIS GAAAME!!
Probable Ikaika Varsity playoff bracket
We needed a win on Wednesday to finish in the top 3 of our division. There are 3 divisions (24 teams total) and only the top 2 plus in each division plus two 2nd-place teams qualify for Bracket A, the championship group.
The 1st place team, Mid-Pac, has 1 loss. That was against us. Hui and Kapolei Canes are 5-2. We lost to a winless team by forfeit last night, making us 4-3 and probably going into Bracket B of the playoffs.

2016 Travel Update
Early July is the best time for most of our guys. It's not easy because summer school ends on different dates at different campuses. The Double Pump Summer Tip-Off is a good option. The Fab 48 is my first choice, but the timing is not great (mid-late July) because of football.

Deepest Apologies
My apologies to Kali'a Mielke's mom, Joey Mielke, to Joy and Eric Murobayashi (Sierra Sisi's parents), and Jason Apuya, Yolanda Apuya and the Apuya ohana. I'm sorry for wasting your time, your energy and your miles on the road.
Mrs. Patti Chang and Sanford, it was a rainy night and you made the drive across town to Aiea for our keiki. I am very, very sorry that you spent all that time and effort (brining a case of water and a cooler). I had hope until the end that we would have at least 5 players. Please forgive me.

Mahalo to Kali'a Mielke, Sierra and Jance for showing up to the game. Big mahalo to Mrs. Chang and Sanford for bringing a case of water for the team.

Sunday Funday
Got some basic offensive sets including 2X

Lineup: DJ, Jance, Sierra, Chase, Radyn, Michael, Jonah, Kali'a Mielke. WE LUB THIS GAME!!
