17U over Lanakila 'B'

Nice hustle tonight, Thunder 17U. I know it's not easy to go full throttle for 2-3 minutes, pit stop, repeat, repeat, repeat... but everybody gave their full 100% defensively and I love that effort. Good work guys.

Thank you for showing good sportsmanship and easing up on the accelerator down the stretch. It was a good opportunity to work on our spread (4 corners) offense. One group did real good with it and the other, well, just needs more reps. Again, it's a challenge to go from 7 Seconds Or Less to an all-out delay game, but it makes us a better team in the long haul.

Update Saturday, 7:44 a.m. Mahalo to Christian for bringing the basketballs to pre-game for warmups outside. I had a story to write (ILH track and field championships) and you came through.

Practice Wed. & Thur.

Got my work schedule and I'm working today (Monday) and tomorrow, so no practice until Wednesday. We had a solid shooting practice at Makiki on Sunday afternoon. Bryson, Brent, Cody and Shane, Bryson's friend. Two hours of shooting and working on mechanics. A fun two hours!

No word yet on the schedule for our games. As of now, 17U Thunder play on Friday, 8 p.m. The 15U Thunder show no games for this weekend and next weekend — this is an obvious TYPO. So please be patient and we'll hear from NJB soon.

Schedule
Monday, no practice. Go make your 300 shots (100 FTs, 100 3s, 100 pull-up jumpers)
Tuesday, no practice. See Monday.
Wednesday, 5 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park.
Thursday, 5 p.m., Practice, Stevenson Middle School courts.
Friday, 8 p.m., 17U game, Palama Settlement Gym.
15U games TBA.

Optional shooting practice today

Hey, guys, just a reminder, no regular practice on this Easter Sunday. Enjoy your family time, kick back and have fun. If you still want to get some shooting practice done, meet me at Makiki Park.

I have an interview to do for a feature story (work) at 2:30, so I won't be there until 3:30. We can shoot for an hour or so, get in 300 shots. 300!

Schedule
Sunday, 3:30 p.m., Shooting practice (optional), Makiki Park
Monday, no practice (I have to work)
Tues-Thur, to be announced
Fri-Sun, games, need verification from NJB. Right now, schedule reads no games for 15U, which is probably a scheduling error.

Diggin' deep

Good effort tonight by our 17U in a 68-64 win over NJB Hawaii Select. That team put on a heck of a shooting display, mainly by Shane Matayoshi. Props to them and Coach Matt Tsukazaki on a nice comeback, and props to our guys for fighting back with tough defense (once we went to man-to-man) and clutch shooting.

I hope we play them again in the playoffs. We'll have a much different look defensively for them, and we'll be much more in sync, too. I don't expect perfection because our 17U guys hardly practice together. We'll gel as we go along and get better as a unit, especially with our zone offense.

Practice on Easter Sunday is strictly optional. The reason I'm having practice is for the guys who won't have any family obligations on that afternoon. Then we can have some solid shooting work done and continue to progress individually and as a team.

If you've got family time, go enjoy and thank the Lord for your blessings. Life is shorter than we think often times. The minute we start taking our family for granted, guess what? We might regret doing that before long. Nothing in life is automatic. Nothing in life is a given or guarantee. Enjoy them all you can in the moment.

Tomorrow morning, 15U play at 10 a.m., Palama Gym. I'm pumped for that game already!

Schedule
Saturday, 10 a.m., 15U vs. Boom, Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m. Practice (optional), Makiki Park
Monday, tba, possible practice.
Tue-Thur, tba, depending on my work schedule

Daily dose
100 made 3-pointers
100 made free throws
100 made pull-up jumpers
10 minutes ballhandling drills
100 push-ups or weight training
200 crunches or ab work

While other players and teams cruise through the "off season," what gear is your motor running on? Idling? Full throttle? One life to live. Your choice.

15U game is Saturday, 10 a.m.

Got the word from NJB All-Net. Our 15U game is on Saturday, 10 am at Palama. No matter what, we'll be without Drayton this weekend. He and his brother Danny are involved with a weekend-long church conference. Would've been nice to have eight, but with all the running we did on Tuesday and today, we'll have stronger legs come game time.

Game time is upon us, cheeeehu!

Schedule
Friday, 8 p.m., 17U vs. NJB Hawaii Select, Palama Settlement Gym
Saturday, 10 a.m., 15U vs. Boom, Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park

And 1: Great practice today. Got a lot of shooting work done, cleaning up some things. Good team shooting competition allowed us to get a lot of conditioning work done. Scrimmages and game situation work were valuable, too. Best game-ending situation: Team Orange gets a corner 3-pointer by Christian with 2 seconds left for the lead. Team White follows with a 55-footer 70-footer by Drew behind the halfcourt stripe that banks in for the win. I shoulda videotaped that!

Update Friday, 7:30 am. I mentioned the Compete and Learn League (CAL) in the previous post and the news that all sophomores (16 and younger) can play. Some of you may not know that this is a different age/birthdate rule than NJB. Right now, our CAL roster would look like this if everyone stays: Bryson, Drayton, Cody, Josh, Isaiah, Keanu, Max, Kaelen + J.J. and Mickey. That's 10 players and that's plenty. I don't assume, though, that everyone will stay because there are school summer leagues, summer school, family vacation trips. Who knows what the plans for Thunder basketball will be? I can only hope. CAL starts in early June, a week or so after the end of NJB All-Net.

CAL usually has a eighth-grade division and if we have enough players, we might field a team. We'd need a lot more kids though. Otherwise, I'll just add Brent to the older team.

There's usually an 18-under (high school age) division at the Ikaika League during the summer. We've never played in that league, but it would be great for our 17U guys who want to play. My only reservation is that (I hear) they use a running clock through everything, including free throws. If that's true, then it's a really short game, barely 30 minutes. Not sure if that would be worthwhile. But I definitely want to find a league for our 17U in the summer.

Tournaments: Kona Stingrays, first week of July, open to high-school age players (including seniors). If we go with our current 17U, we have plenty of numbers and I wouldn't add any more unless we lose too many (football summer training) and have less than 10.

NJB All-Net 17U tournament is in the second week of July. That's a five-day tournament.

If anyone hears about other tournaments and leagues, let me know. Next step is to start planning fundraisers. Everybody's input is needed.

Even the roll for quarters is orange and white.
Laundry time is my destiny.

15U: No game Friday morning

This just in from NJB All-Net: 15-under Thunder have no game on Friday morning. The league commissioner e-mailed me and said he's off-island and will check on the schedule when he gets back tomorrow (Thursday).

I suspected something wasn't right with the schedule since our game was only one listed for Friday morning, and it had been a rescheduled game already. The league said we probably have a 15U game on Saturday. Please bear with the league. They have about 60 teams in four age groups, so it gets tough sometimes.

Schedule
Thursday, 5 p.m., Practice, Stevenson Middle School courts
Friday, 8 p.m., 17U game at Palama Settlement Gym
Saturday, time TBA, 15U game, gym TBA
Saturday, 8 p.m., 17U game, Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park

ALSO
Talked with Greydon Espinda, the commissioner of the CAL League. He said that the league, which begins in early June, will use grade levels as the requirement, not exact birthdates. That means that everyone who is currently a sophomore can play. That's great news for you guys who have already turned 16, like Mickey. CAL still has one rule, though. If you're a sophomore, but turn 17 before the league starts, you can't play.

So keep that in mind: CAL League, sophomores can play. Woohoo!

Shoot & Run, Run & Shoot

We had a solid workout yesterday (Tuesday) at Stevenson. But first, some questions to be answered.

• Why Stevenson? Tuesdays and Thursdays, Makiki Park courts are reserved by another (younger) team. I have to work today (Wednesday), but I have Tue/Thur off, so that's how we're at Stevenson on those practice days.

• How do I find out when we practice? With 27 guys on two teams, the most efficient way for me to get info to you is through this blog and Facebook, so please check there or call me at 551-1054. I can't make 27 phone calls. There is work to do, places to go, laundry to wash, yadayada...

• How do I fid out when we have games? Same as practice, check here. I have a new post here almost daily. So far, the league hasn't changed our schedule, so we play Friday: 15U, 10 a.m., Palama Gym; 17U, 8 p.m., Palama Gym. No games scheduled for Saturday or Sunday, so we'll practice Sunday, 3 p.m.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled programming. We had a small, but solid turnout yesterday, all 15U. Took care of shooting reps and some conditioning. Tweaking some of the flaws in our shooting technique and form also involves footwork before catching the ball, as well as hand position. For example, a lot of players don't have their shooting hand upright before the pass, which is a problem if the ball arrives at super-fast speed. Also, keeping the hand up gives the passer a clear target. There are more reasons for this method of catch-and-shoot effectiveness, but it's simply more productive than the shooter who is standing stiff as a board with both hands down. He most likely will not get a shot off before the defender arrives.

All in all, yesterday was a useful practice and we got a lot of basic shooting work done. Going 3-on-3 fullcourt in the final 30 minutes was fun to watch. You guys are addicted to this game, especially the guy who catches the bus to practice from Kailua.

Schedule
Thursday, 5 p.m., Practice, Stevenson Middle School
Friday, 10 a.m., 15U game, Palama Settlement Gym
Friday, 8 p.m., 17U game, Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park

Practice is over, but three diehards play 3-point knockout.

I love this game

Practice on Tuesday, 5 p.m., at Stevenson Middle School courts. We can't go to Makiki on Tuesdays because the little-kid teams have the place reserved. Stevenson is up the road a bit, on the way from Makiki to Punchbowl. Call me if you get lost (551-1054) or use your fancy GPS. Coach's cheap little phone doesn't have GPS or cool stuff like you guys. It is just a phone that he likes to drop on the parking lot pavement once in awhile.

I'm happy to say that two of the three games over the weekend are up online (video). Today was total, nonstop work from 6 am until now, including having to go get a new driver's license (lost the other one last week) and dealing with places (7-Eleven) that won't take my check for some reason, causing me to hate them from now on. (But I'll still go there for Slurpees.)

So practice tomorrow, and 15U and 17U games are on Friday at least check. No changes so far from the league.

Schedule
Tuesday, 5 p.m., Practice, Stevenson Middle School courts
Thursday, 5 p.m., Practice, Stevenson Middle School courts
Friday, 10 a.m., 15U game, Palama Settlement Gym (holiday/Good Friday)
Friday, 8 p.m., 17U game, Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park

17U Thunder-OBBT game video

I don't know what OBBT stands for, but it sure ain't Hawaiian Punch. The new schedule had us playing Hawaiian Punch on Saturday, but instead, we played OBBT, which is basically the University High team. So here's the game video for our 41-36 overtime win.

15U Thunder-Kapolei game video

A 43-point first half. That's a team record that might stand for awhile. Like a week or two. Bahaa...

If someone had told me our 15U would score more points in one half than our 17U would score in a full game ... and the 15U would lose while the 17U would win, I'd be slightly surprised. But that's the game. Anything can happen.

Part 3

Got lemons?

Make lemonade. That's an old saying, and it's true as long as you've got sugar, water and a lot of ice. Nobody wants warm lemonade.

So, 17U, it was a tough night. A grind. When open shots aren't falling, when the other team is a real "team" that handless fullcourt pressure well, then we're in for a real test. OBBT gave us that tonight, and I'm proud to say we dealt with reality and stepped out of Palolo Gym with a hard-earned 41-36 overtime win.

If we make half of our 3-point tries, it's a blowout. They sat back in that zone and took their chances. If we make 1/3 of our 3-point tries, we have a double-digit lead by halftime. But it's clear most (or all) of us aren't shooting the ball every day. There's track. There's volleyball. Who knows what else? But we shot like a rusty team, nothing like we did the first two weekends. So please prioritize, and use 30 minutes a day to hit the gym or park just to work on your shooting.

Make 100 free throws. Make 100 3-pointers. Every day. It will transform you.

Great hustle, hard work on the boards and a lot of smart defense. That's what kept us in the game. What won us the game was a willingness to attack the basket and get to the foul line. I also think we wore OBBT down by pushing the tempo all game long. Everyone did his part offensively and defensively. I'm still happy about the great teamwork we have, sharing the ball and hustling for each other. Props to OBBT, props to our team, too. It was a well-fought game with good sportsmanship by the teams.

Sometimes shots don't fall. I'll never feel down about that as long as we keep working hard and encouraging each other.

Another 17U game on Sunday afternoon, 3 p.m., Palolo Gym. Get there by 2 p.m. so we can have a solid shootaround. The 15U had a good shootaround on Friday afternoon, then scored 43 first-half points the next morning.

Sunday
3 p.m., 17U vs. Hawaiian Punch, Palolo Gym. Be there an hour early (2 p.m.)
5 p.m. Practice, Makiki Park

Monday
Possible practice, 5 p.m., Makiki Park. Depends on my work schedule.

This week's practice and game schedule to be announced later.

Great first half

Guys, great performance in the first half this morning. We were up 43-33 on Kapolei Rebels and I thought we still had lots of gas in the tank. Boy, was I wrong.

First, props to Kapolei (and Coach Jonathan Gelacio) for fighting back and winning 79-71. Between their big guys and our faster small guys, I thought we were going to wear them down in the second half like we did two weeks ago at the Aiea tournament. The difference, of course, is that we had 12 players at the tournament. Today, we had seven.

So we'll get back to work tomorrow at practice. I think yesterday's shooing practice definitely helped today. I haven't seen any of my teams shoot and press like that for a half since 1999-2000 when I was at Kaimuki JV. Our second game, we scored 88 points.

I wouldn't change much about today's game plan except this: I'd slow it down to start the second half and let you guys get your second wind. In a spread offense (four corners), I don't think anybody can beat us. Even if we have two big men (Kaelen and Max) on the floor together, there's no big man who can keep up with Max on the perimeter.

Also, I'd still run in the second half for a few minutes, then bring it back out to finish the game. But that's all HINDSIGHT now that I've seen what we really can do with 7 players for a full game, a whole game of maximum uptempo. So this week, the goals are simple: work more on our trapping, work more on our shooting (always good to stay sharp), work on our spread offense and work on conditioning. Whether we run a lot or a little less, we need to get in better shape for the final minutes. We tired out today. No more of that.

17U plays tonight at Palolo, 8 p.m. Be there by 7 p.m., gamers. Let's have more fun.

Schedule
Sunday, 5 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park

Saturday, 8 p.m., Thunder 17U vs. Hawaiian Punch, Palolo Gym

Head's up for summer tournaments

OK, everybody, I need direct and immediate feedback from you on the two July tournaments we are planning to enter for 17U.

• Kona Stingrays Tournament, July 7-10 (Thursday-Sunday). This tourney is well-run by the Awa ohana, my old friends from my Kona days. A team from Kentucky is in the tourney. Sweet. They've reserved a spot for us, but I need to know exactly who's serious about going. We're going to fundraise for this.

• NJB Hawaii Summer Classic, July 13-17 (Wednesday-Sunday). This tourney was just announced Tuesday night and I am about to sign us up. Entry fee is not cheap, $325, but I'll pay it and we'll have fundraisers to cover all these costs. I just want to be sure that we have enough guys 17 and under ready and willing to ball for five days straight. In addition, we'll probably have one or two 15U games that weekend in the CAL League. Fun and busy. Are you up for it?

Let me know. I want to get us some game uniforms before the tournaments, even before the CAL League (15U), which begins in early June. Everybody knows the CAL League from last fall and the use of shot clocks. But I also think of it as a quality league with good leadership (Greydon Espinda), so I'm looking forward to that.

Let me know what you think, everybody.

Schedule update

UPDATE, 3 p.m. Monday: Note that both 17U games this weekend are at Palolo. Just got the latest word from NJB.

UPDATE, 12:10 p.m. Monday: Another change from NJB. The 17U Friday game will move to Sunday, 3 p.m. Not sure what the specific details of the other team's request was, but I'm guessing since it University High, they have a lot of volleyball players. UHS's volleyball team plays on Friday night, so that's a conflict. And guess who they play? Yup, they play AOP, which has two of our Thunder guys (Mo and Carter). So it all works out.

UPDATE 11 a.m. Monday: NJB All-Net informed me that we have a 17U game on Friday. The disqualified team we had been scheduled to play has been replaced by another team, so take note of the schedule below for this week.

Schedule
Wednesday, 5 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park
(new) Friday, 5 p.m. Practice, Makiki Park. I got the day off so we'll have a shooting-oriented workout, maybe get some pizza delivered and watch some game videos.

17U
Friday, 6 p.m. Thunder 17U vs. UHS, Palama Settlement Gym
Saturday, 8 p.m., Thunder 17U vs. Hawaiian Punch, Palolo Gym Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m., Thunder 17U vs. UHS, Palolo Gym

15U
Saturday, 10 a.m., Thunder 15U vs. Kapolei Rebels, Palama Settlement Gym

Please meet at the gym one hour before game time. If the prior game ends early, they will start our game early, no exceptions.

This week

(UPDATE Wednesday, Apr. 13: The game schedule below is INCOMPLETE. NJB sent us an updated schedule, which I've posted above in a newer post.)

Schedule
Wednesday, 5 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park
Saturday, 10 a.m., 15U, game at Palama Settlement Gym
Saturday, 7 p.m., 17U, game at Palama Settlement Gym

No practice on Monday. Also, we are scheduled on paper to play team B3 in the 17U, but that team was disqualified last week, so I'm going to find out if there's any schedule adjustment. That game was originally scheduled for Friday.

Weekend wrap

15U — Great, great hustle and effort. I'm so proud of you guys because you never gave up despite being outnumbered two games in a row. Being down 14, then rallying to beat Central ... I'm thankful that we have video of a historic comeback with just five players — the Ironman 5. Today, with just six guys, we rallied from 16 down to within 4 of Windward before losing, but again, you showed unstoppable heart and determination. Palolo gym was rocking! Felt like people who were neutral were cheering for us. They saw how tough you were, how hard you kept battling to get back in, and they believed!

17U — Pretty good defense for the first time (first weekend) playing together as a team. I love the way you share the ball and trust each other. A really good start with strong wins over Hawaii Storm and OTB, but I think you'd agree that you can play so much better in the future. It's just a matter of getting used to each other. The amount of recognition on defense, reading each other for traps and steals, that's all about repetition and playing more and more together. I love our mix of talent and personalities. Nothing but guys who love the game 100%. I feel very thankful for that.

Good workout this afternoon at Makiki Park. A lot of work was done on shooting fundamentals. You know what works best for yourself, so just remember that what we worked on will be beneficial if you ever want to strip down the essentials of good shooting. Simple is good, but getting to that point where your shot is always consistent and at maximum efficiency ... that takes work and repetition.

Here's a look at Mark Price, one of the best pure shooters in NBA history. His left hand, totally straight and consistently high, flat and steady. His right hand, always at the perfect angle of flex (bringing the ball back) and point of release (not too low or high). He makes it look easy and simple, but that came with hard work. He proved that 6-foot guard with limited vertical ability can be an All-Pro in the NBA on skill, work ethic and smarts.

Check out this Mark Price highlight video. Classic pure shooting form: Mark Price. Left hand stable and flat; no pulling back, pulling down or flipping outward. Always great followthrough upward, not just forward. See for yourself.

Update 12:30 pm. Part 3 is ready.

My apologies

Everyone on 15U, I'm sorry for having the wrong gym location for Saturday's game. We've been given a handful of changes from the league, and I wrote down Palolo Gym when we were supposed to play at Palama. Everyone who was en route made it to Palama in time, but Bryson never got the info and was actually at Palolo at the later, "old" time (5 p.m.). We tried calling Bryson, but his phone was off, and I'm sorry about that.

This is the reason why I haven't posted the entire schedule yet. Even yesterday, the league was asking about changing a game date next weekend. It didn't change since we already had a game scheduled around the time they wanted to switch, but we'll take it one weekend at a time. Better to have solid info than constantly changing info.

Sorry Bryson.

Schedule
Sunday, 1 p.m., Palolo Gym, 15U vs. OTB
Sunday, 4 p.m., Makiki Park, practice
Monday, 5 p.m., Makiki Park, practice (tentative)

I've had more free time today, so I've seen more game video from the Aiea tournament. We definitely played very good in some stretches, especially as everybody got more used to each other. Nice chemistry!

Here's a team photo taken by the Aiea Blazers after our final game on Sunday. J.J., Tai and Anfernee are missing.

I'm holding off on posting scheduled games for next week until the league has a solidified list. And yes, we'll have a practice on Sunday afternoon, 4-6 p.m. Nothing heavy, just concentrating on shooting and ballhandling for the guys who can't get enough basketball. Maybe do some game video watching afterward.

Update Friday, 1:17 pm. The first of three parts of the Thunder-Aiea Blazers game (Sunday) is below. The next two parts will take five hours to load on YouTube (unlisted).

Update Friday, 9:58 pm. Here's Part 2. Part 3 is loading up (2.5 hours).

Not even Kobe

A good trap is a good trap is a good trap. No need to reach. No need to overdo it. Just set a good trap and even Kobe can't break it or split it, as you can see here in this great piece by Sebastian Pruti at NBA Playbook.

Here's the video.

This trap by Golden State put a major dent in the Lakers' spacing and offensive momentum. After the time out, LA was forced to pass in from the corner and didn't have the chance to get Kobe in the center of the court, where he prefers to start on an iso. He's great, but good, sound defense will deter him from time to time, even with a game on the line.

Head's up: Another schedule change

Just got this from NJB All-Net League: Saturday's 15U game has been moved from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m. The game will still be at Palolo Gym.

Please bear with the league as it sorts out all these scheduling issues. I hope everyone can make it at 4 p.m.; I know Keanu has a big weekend at a regional tryout for a national camp. This won't help us, but there's nothing we can do about the time change.

17U

NJB revised schedule

There were a few errors in the schedule released by NJB All-Net League that have been corrected. Here's the update I received from Stephen Chong (NJB) today via e-mail.

So, a busy weekend is ahead. A fun weekend! The rest of the league schedule is being revised. When they have the full schedule for us, I'll have copies for all our guys.

REMINDER: All players be sure to carry a copy of your birth certificate to all games. This is just precaution in case there is any missing paperwork by the league or myself. Better safe than sorry.

Our practice schedule is normal. We'll meet on Wednesday at Makiki, 5 p.m.

Evolution of the 15U

Nice, nice work this weekend, Thunder. From our first day (forfeit by Sharks) to our first game (loss to Aiea Blazers) to real progress (last-second loss to KKB, wins over Kapolei Rebels and Blazers), you guys were superb.

The effort was always there. Honing our defense and finding that quick transition rhythm took some time, but it came and it was gangbusters. I enjoyed watching you guys excel. Sure, there's room for improvement, but we made a lot of strides at the tournament. By the end, we were a different team.

Our 17U practices today at 3 p.m., Makiki Park. 15U guys are welcome, but if you're tired, just rest. I'll post our practice schedule after I get my work schedule from the office late tonight.

Note: 17U schedule is still pending. We are playing next weekend, but the schedule that was issued at the coaches meeting on Saturday (yesterday) has glitches and the league will fix them up. We could play on Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday. They're working on it right now. Just early-season scheduling stuff. NJB has four age groups with a total of about 60 teams at five gyms, so they have my sympathies!

Schedule
Sunday, 3 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park
Monday, no practice

Chapter One

Fun sometimes, but too many unforced errors tonight. Before I go further, here's the scenario:

If we win our 9:45 a.m. game, we finish at least second in our pool. Then we can go into the championship semifinals and compete for the tourney title.

If we lose our 9:45 a.m. game, we'll finish (probably) third in our pool and move down to the consolation championship bracket. We'll still have two more games after that, which is great. We need more games, more practices. More everything.

Back to tonight's game. Much to learn from tonight's loss to the Aiea Blazers. Much, much, much. I saw the first half on video after the game and I'm loading all of it to my computer now. It won't be up for some time; YouTube needs 2 1/2 hours to load 15 minutes of footage, and we have 44 minutes of it. I might burn a DVD (slightly faster) and bring it tomorrow morning before our next game. Often, it's more effective to show rather than tell.

On the whole, we did some things well and a lot of little things not well. That's how a first game or scrimmage goes, especially with a limited number of practices and a team almost entirely filled with new players.

The good?

• Everybody looked to push the transition offense. I expect us to do a better job of going from Point A to Point B (no jogging, standing, etc.) eventually, but generally, we ran fairly well for a first game.

• Everybody was basically unselfish, which will lead to good passing later. For now, we're still unfamiliar with each other, so we cause a lot of our own turnovers by overpassing.

• Aggressiveness is a two-sided coin. It works well for us when we trap properly out of the halfcourt or fullcourt defenses. I like that about us. The opposite would be to have a team of passive players. Then it would be almost impossible to press.

• When we squared up on the perimeter and post, we got good results.

The not-so-good?

• Too much standing after baskets by the other team, after misses by the other team. When we should've been sprinting to our spots (within 7 seconds), we sometimes were jogging. Or waiting. Not good.

• Our 5 rarely took the ball out on the other team's made baskets. He is supposed to step out quickly and get it in instantly. It would've been easy; the Blazers didn't press us fullcourt at all. What our 1 needs to do is let the ball go and force the 5 to make the inbounds pass. I'll be watching for this closely. A 5 who can't do the job will find himself next to me on the bench.

• Our 2 and 3 often got downcourt quickly, but did not spot up on the wings (3-point arc). Instead, they sometimes spotted up inside the 3-point line, about 15-18 feet away. This is pointless and creates bad spacing between himself (wing) and the post. So sprint down and spot up if you're a 2 or 3 on the wing and nowhere else. Then, if you have the lane open, drive strong.

• Our zone offense needs work, and it's not just us. All teams are slowest to develop zone offense. It takes real unity and a single mind as a team to flow against a zone. We have the tools — good 3-point shooters, decent passers, a couple of tough posts — but we rushed far too much. It'll take time and patience to become a good zone offense team.

• About patience ... Zone offense means moving the ball by the pass. Square up, fake, swing the ball. We hardly had any ball reversals from one wing to the other or one corner to the other. We need more of this against zones rather than trying to dribble through two defenders. That was a bad move by a lot of us tonight, and the turnover count was horrendous just because we forced with the dribble against zone rather than pass.

• More on zone offense. Watching the tape, I realize now that our first team didn't have a high post for several possessions. Guys, it's not about being locked into the high post if you're asked to be the 5 for a few minutes. it's about FLOOR BALANCE, and the Blazers gave us the high post as a wide-open option many, many times. Once, Keanu actually sealed off the defender right in front of the basket, but we dribbled into a traveling call instead of passing. We'll work on this and get better.

Now, I have my mistakes that need correcting.

• No matter how long I've coached, it seems my teams never do well with zone offense early in the season. So that's going to change. We'll invest far more time on it at practice. A no-brainer.

• I wish we could've had some outside competition sooner, but my work schedule put a lid on that somewhat. Now I know we can be very aggressive, which is great defensively. I plan to use more fullcourt pressure instead of focusing mostly on our halfcourt press.

• Our man-to-man was good at times, but our weakside help faltered and allowed the Blazers to make a couple of huge 3-pointers, if I remember right. That's a result of coaching, and I need to work deeper into our man defense. We've done almost nothing with man defense so far, and that is my fault.

• Cody should've been in the game early. They gave us the corner 3-pointer, and that's Cody's shot. So from now on, Cody and anybody else who notices that the other team is zoning us, remind me that Cody will bust that zone if he gets a chance. Why didn't I play him? Because I was overly focused on defense and trapping. I should've been more balanced in my thinking and giving our 3-point shooters more opportunities. Another two or three treys would've turned the game around.

There are things that are beyond my control that hopefully will change. If all of us are at every practice, it changes what we can do on offense and defense. Until then, I can't rely on the guys who are lost on the floor because they don't know what's going on — because they missed too many practices. We've got time as the NJB All-Net League begins (next week) to get better and better. Until then, be patient about your playing time and please, please go to the park or gym and work on your ballhanding and shooting.

Play in as many pickup games with adults, with older players, as you can. That will change your mentality and force you to make better decisions. Take the 300 shots daily, including at least 100 makes at the foul line and 100 makes from the 3-point arc. You owe it to yourself to get better every day, and you owe it to your teammates to pump up your skill level on those days when we don't practice.

I see us as a fast, flowing machine on offense. I see us as a iron-vice, lockdown defense, forcing lots of turnovers without silly reaching fouls. I see us dictating the tempo and pace. Am I asking for too much? I don't think so. I see a dozen players at 15U who have the capability of becoming very good players and a very good team. But I can't control your work ethic or your heart. How far you go and we go is mainly up to you.

I'm looking for gradual improvement, game by game, week by week. It'll take time to become a good team, and when that happens, wins will come. Until then, press on, press hard. Play fast, play smart. Easier said than done, but it will be done.

See you guys at Aiea Rec Gym, 9 a.m. tomorrow.
