Shoot & Run, Run & Shoot

We had a solid workout yesterday (Tuesday) at Stevenson. But first, some questions to be answered.

• Why Stevenson? Tuesdays and Thursdays, Makiki Park courts are reserved by another (younger) team. I have to work today (Wednesday), but I have Tue/Thur off, so that's how we're at Stevenson on those practice days.

• How do I find out when we practice? With 27 guys on two teams, the most efficient way for me to get info to you is through this blog and Facebook, so please check there or call me at 551-1054. I can't make 27 phone calls. There is work to do, places to go, laundry to wash, yadayada...

• How do I fid out when we have games? Same as practice, check here. I have a new post here almost daily. So far, the league hasn't changed our schedule, so we play Friday: 15U, 10 a.m., Palama Gym; 17U, 8 p.m., Palama Gym. No games scheduled for Saturday or Sunday, so we'll practice Sunday, 3 p.m.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled programming. We had a small, but solid turnout yesterday, all 15U. Took care of shooting reps and some conditioning. Tweaking some of the flaws in our shooting technique and form also involves footwork before catching the ball, as well as hand position. For example, a lot of players don't have their shooting hand upright before the pass, which is a problem if the ball arrives at super-fast speed. Also, keeping the hand up gives the passer a clear target. There are more reasons for this method of catch-and-shoot effectiveness, but it's simply more productive than the shooter who is standing stiff as a board with both hands down. He most likely will not get a shot off before the defender arrives.

All in all, yesterday was a useful practice and we got a lot of basic shooting work done. Going 3-on-3 fullcourt in the final 30 minutes was fun to watch. You guys are addicted to this game, especially the guy who catches the bus to practice from Kailua.

Schedule
Thursday, 5 p.m., Practice, Stevenson Middle School
Friday, 10 a.m., 15U game, Palama Settlement Gym
Friday, 8 p.m., 17U game, Palama Settlement Gym
Sunday, 3 p.m., Practice, Makiki Park

Practice is over, but three diehards play 3-point knockout.
