I wish we could've videotaped Jimmy's pointers on shooting technique. I messaged him on Facebook and he sent this great response.
From Jimmy:
Not a problem. I teach from experience. I was blessed by God to have the opportunity to do so. God just always tells me to give back and share on what i know. You never know how you will ever impact someones life and when they see that I do it through God then hopefully they will follow. If you want to be good you need to be a little serious but at the same time you need to have fun. thats how i fell in love with this game. But like how I said, if you can shoot the ball you have a spot on the court. I can even do a defense demonstration later. but it was nice to share with you guys what I know.
I put a lot of time into basketball, but not just basketball, but how to play the game.. I broke down situations with film and TRUST ME! I LEARNED FROM MY MISTAKES and I MADE A LOT OF MISTAKES IN BASKETBALL! But it makes you a wiser bball player. You got a bunch of good kids. Just make sure that you still emphasize on what I showed them today.
Tips:
1) Timing your foot work before you catch the ball.
2) Line up your index finger, should be a straight line to the rim ring (where the net gets hooked onto the rim).
3) Hold your follow through until the ball hits the rim or hits the ground.
4) Make sure your index finger is pointing at the rim.
5) Always keep your eye on the rim even when you shoot the ball.
6) FREE THROWS, always line your index finger between the L and D, for SPALDING basketballs, but for wilson i put it on the L.
7) Always flick your wrist, spread out the fingers to tension up your grip.
8) Keep the ball off your palms, have them on finger tips and finger pads. (Two fingers should fit between your palm and the ball.)
9) I know I told you this but when your shooting a free throw, your left hand should line up on the left side of the square on the glass backboard, and the right hand (fingers) should be over the top of the square on the backboard.
10) Make sure the wrist is bent back before you go up. NOT like the kid that I said twists his wrist when he shoots.
11) Line your feet up to the target (rim). You don't have to make it directly straight but as straight as you can.
12) Then just have fun. that's the main thing.
