H1 Thunder 44, Lanakila 38 (Inter)

Ikaika League, Intermediate Division, Lanakila gym

Another taller team that was scrappy and hustling. We got by on our defensive pressure. Big run to start the second half turned a 2-point lead into about 12 or 14 pretty quick.

We are, no question, the smallest team in the league. We are also probably the quickest on defense, the fastest on the fastbreak, and pressure the ball halfcourt and fullcourt best. But when we don't box out (and play physical in the paint), we can lose to any opponent. Tonight was maybe our worst game all season in that aspect. SOFT.

We also were horrendous when we got defensive rebounds, not making the smart outlet pass upcourt. We missed out on probably 12 to 20 points because our rebounders decided to dribble first (with their heads down) instead of passing to teammates for easy points.

We got away with this tonight. Consider ourselves fortunate. We're 5-1 and lining up for a good spot seeding-wise in the playoffs. We're playing B+ to B- basketball. Still not quite A- or A or A+ yet. We've got some work to do. If we take care of the issues, we win the league championship.

Mahalo to Chase and Brandon for shooting game video. And mahalo to both of them and Coach Bino for their input during and after the game, sharing their insights with the team.

Lineup: Jance, Jhevin, Josh R, Trinity, Jayden, Skyler, Ryan, Micah, Jonah,Felcris, Josh D.

Wednesday Funday

Optional shooting workout was solid. Jance, Gabriel, Jason got in 200+ shots each. The wind was intermittent, so we did more layup drills than usual and finished up with triple-threat, jab-step 1-on-1 work. Also got some post 1-on-1 work done. I remember when Kyle, Tani and Chris used to go to battle with these drills back in 2013.

Wednesday Shooting Practice

Weather is real nice today. Optional shooting practice is 4:30 pm at Makiki Park. Hopefully we have enough Thunder and Thunder Alums to have a 5-on-5, also.

WE LOVE THIS GAAAAME!!

Tuesday Funday

We were just 20 minutes or so into practice when the dark clouds spilled a heavy downpour on us at Makiki Park. Most of our Thunder stayed and a few left. The ones who stayed went through reps to learn and refine a lot of our halfcourt and fullcourt sets on offense and defense. Turned out to be really good, even though the court was too wet to run on. Just walking through helps a lot, tedious and boring as it might seem. Repetition matters greatly.

Lineup: Jance, Jason, Chase, Radyn, Trinity, Micah, Chaz, Keanu, Sierra, Walter.

Not available: Tenchi (ankle), Kapaa (volleyball), Kyle (?), Jared (volleyball), Ryan (dentist appointment), Felcris (homework), Josh D (no ride), Mosi (?),Jhevin (drum lessons), Josh R (school team practice), Kali'a (weight training), Colin, Jayden.

Note: If you text me and there's no reply, please follow up with a call. I might be away from my phone for a minute (or longer). Or maybe your text didn't send properly.

Monday Funday

Great work this afternoon. Windy at Makiki Park, but we got some shooting reps in. We definitely got a lot of defensive work in, primarily with our man defense, positioning, stance... the sometimes boring, hard work that wins games and championships. I'm just glad everyone put good effort into their team today. Thanks again to Ryan (Radyn's brother) for helping out during our 5-on-5 scrimmage. We were 15 or 16 strong today.

Lineup: Jance, Jhevin, Felcris, Micah, Chaz, Jayden, Colin, Walter, Michael, Radyn, Jonah, Trinity, Ryan H, Gabriel. Also, Jance's friend, Jason, practiced with us for the first time. He's 13. If he keeps practicing, he could play on our 13U in CAL and PAA leagues this June.

Not available: Keanu, Kapaa (volleyball), Kyle, Chase, Jared, Josh D, Mosi, Josh R (school team practice), Sierra (Islanderz practice), Chris, Kali'a(football weight training), Tenchi (ankle). Thanks to Tenchi for helping on on our shooting drills.

It was great to have Colin and Gabriel back from injuries. Plenty of work to do tomorrow. See you guys at 4:30. Good work, Thunder!

Shout out

To our cinematographer of excellence, Brandon Higashionna. You may not be aware, but Brandon's baseball team at Kalani played in the OIA playoffs. They won 9-0 against Waipahu. Then it was a loss on the road against eventual champ Campbell. Then they needed a win over Pearl City to earn a state-tournament berth. His team lost 5-4 in a heartbreaker, and the season was over. Did Brandon take a well-deserved break? No. The next day, he shot our game video on Saturday night at McCully.

Thank you, Brandon. You continue to bless our Thunder by giving your time and talent so freely. That's 53 games of volunteer service and counting.

Sunday Funday

Props to Jance, Jonah and Josh R for getting a lot of shooting work in today. Solid 2 hours of fundamentals. The reps keep adding up, refining and refining along the way. Each of these Thunder are at an age when it can be a tough transition with shooting mechanics, but they keep working and working. Stephen Curry went through a very drastic makeover when he was in high school between his sophomore and junior years, and he never stopped getting reps in. Mahalo to our dads for bringing the guys to Makiki Park on a sunny afternoon. And Mahalo to Joel, Jonah's dad, for bringing manapua. That was ono.

Sunday shooters

Again, if any of the Thunder want to get some shooting done, call or text me 551-1054 before 2:00 pm. We can shoot from 3:00 to 5:00 or so. If not, enjoy your Sunday and get some rest and family time.

H1 Thunder 56, Sharks A 44 (JV)

Ikaika League, JV Division, McCully gym

Congrats to Coach Larry, Coach Bino and the 13 Thunder who suited up for Saturday night's battle. It's been a long time since we've consistently had double-figure numbers for games in any league, maybe not since 2011 when our 17U (Drew Viena, Mo Krume, Kawe Johnson, Mickey Morikawa, JJ Acopan and the rest of those guys) were dominating NJB All-Net.

Coach Larry said everyone played hard and he tried to get as many players time on the court while still giving the older guys their chance to get significant minutes. He said Sharks had just 6 players, which is unusually low.

Having a hungry team with hungry players for every game is a major factor in success and it is very obvious that we have one of the hungriest teams in the league. Maybe the most hungry. AWESOME.

I haven't seen the video yet, but I'm looking forward to it. With Larry and Bino and all the help from our parents — Mahalo to Jason Apuya for picking up Felcris, Mosi and Chris — our kids have so much opportunity to learn great teamwork, sacrifice and joy through the game of basketball. And it doesn't matter if I'm there or not. That's how strong we are as an ohana.

Thank you Lord for every blessing. WE LOVE THIS GAME.

Update 4/27
Lineup: Sierra, Jonah, Felcris, Josh R, Mosi, Chris, Jhevin, Jance, Ryan, Chase, Tenchi, Radyn, Kali‘a.

Not available: Kyle (church seminar), Josh D (family time with his cousin), Jayden, Colin (ankle), Jared, Kapaa (volleyball), Micah (uniform). Gabriel (injuries).

I edited the game video - big Mahalo to  Brandon Higashionna for another well-shot game - and it was fun to work on. Great teamwork, sharing the ball, being aggressive offensively, having patience against the Sharks' 2-3 zone and a solid job defensively and we turned a lot of Sharks turnovers into quick transition points. Coach Larry mixed up our defenses beautifully.

Le Jardin 16U League update

Here is an update from the Le Jardin 16U League. The league director is Le Jardin varsity coach Kenneth Powell. The list of teams has some very good teams that we normally wouldn't play in the summer.

Having both LJ and Kalani leagues to play in is going to be fun and a great learning experience for all our Thunder. We'll also be playing in CAL and PAA Leagues (15U, 13U) at the same time. Some of our Intermediate guys will be or already are too old for 13U, but our current 13U guys told me on Thursday (after our game) that they want to keep playing 13U. That's Ryan, Jayden, Trinity, Jonah, Jance plus Walter, Chaz. Maybe Lorelai? Jance has a friend (12) who might play.

Coaches,
Below are the dates for this years Summer League.  All games will take place at Le Jardin Academy.  Entry fee is $500 with checks being made payable to Le Jardin Academy.  Each team is guaranteed 11 games with the top 8 continuing on to playoffs.  Every team at this point will play Wednesdays and Saturdays (subject to change pending additional teams).  There are a few Saturdays that our gym was not available so there are some Friday dates.  If you require any accommodations please let me know as soon as possible, I will do my best to accommodate your request.  Our concession stand will be open all of the days listed below.

Please reply confirmation of your participation with the contact number and email (if different from yours)  for the person I can send additional details to.  Teams expected to participate this year are listed below.  Contact me with any questions.  Thank you in advance for your participation we look forward to an exciting summer.

H1 Thunder 47, Hoops4Christ 37 (Int)

Ikaika League, Intermediate Division, Lanakila gym
Always a battle with H4C. We made plays, did enough defensively on the boards and when we pressed full court. We had more turnovers on bad decisions than usual, but overall still a solid team win against another bigger team. Winning this championship in Ikaika League's first-ever Intermediate Division is definitely attainable IF we play a little smarter and finish our box-outs. I edited the game video (thank you Chase Santos) and we had at least five box-outs that we didn't finish all the way, and we gave up rebounds.

We average more than 1 point per possession, so that's more than 5 points we missed out on, plus points we gave up on H4C's putbacks. That's the difference between winning and losing if it's a close game. A championship game. So let's fix this.

Lineup: Jance, Jhevin, Trinity, Chaz, Skyler, Josh R, Jayden, Josh D, Ryan, Felcris, Jonah, Micah. Micah led our scorers with 14 points.

MAHALO to Ray-Marlyn Ramos for picking up Josh and Felcris before the game since I was working in Kailua. I'll be totally unavailable on Saturday covering two OIA championship baseball games (Division I and II) in Waipio, so Coach Larry and Coach Bino will be in charge. Have fun, Thunder!

Next: Friday - no practice.

9 Thunder strong, and we had some great help from Ryan (Radyn's brother), and Josh Alexander and his friends. We got some basic classroom work done on the white board, did conditioning drills and went into 5-on-5 work for the last 45 minutes, Good work, Thunder!

Lineup: Jance, Tenchi, Radyn, Keanu, Walter, Skylar, Chase, Jonah, Kali'a,

Not available: Micah (?), Kapaa (VB), Kyle (?), Jared (?), Ryan (brother's OIA baseball playoff game), Josh D (?), Mosi (babysitting), Jhevin (no ride), Josh R (dad), Trinity (school practice), Chaz (?), Jayden (traffic), Sierra (?),Chris (babysitting), Felcris (?), Colin (ankle), Gabriel (injured), Michael (school project).

Next: Thursday, 5:55 pm - Stretching/warmups at Lanakila gym outside court. Coach Bino will be in charge. He has the basketballs, camera, etc. Please help out and be on time, be crisp and sharp with all pre-game and in-game execution. That will lead to big fun, Thunder. I will be at Kailua covering baseball in the afternoon and early evening. Coach Larry has a game to play, but we are fine with Coach Bino.

Balance, fundamentals, repetition

1 hour of concentrated, hustling (no walking) shooting = 500 shots. Multiply by 5 days per week = 2,500. Multiply by 50 weeks per year (take 2 weeks off if you dare) = 125,000 shots. Do this for just 10 years = 1,250,000 shots. Think you'd be a good shooter by then?

Summer JV League

Just got off the phone with one of the organizers for Le Jardin JV League and it sounds promising. The league is brand new at LJ, which has a beautiful basketball facility on the Windward side, right after the Pali tunnel.

Punahou (ILH champs), ‘Iolani, Leilehua (OIA champs) and Mililani are already in the league. Since Saint Louis closed its JV league (I never even knew they had one), these teams have moved over. A former Saint Louis assistant coach is now the head varsity coach at Le Jardin.

Hopefully, if we get into this league, the schedule won't overlap with the Kalani Varsity League, which plays on Tue/Thur nights. We may have a situation where we play at Le Jardin JV League early on those nights (maybe 5:00 pm), then go to Kalani.

At Kalani, Coach Nathan Davis has generously slotted us as the late game (7:15 pm) every year. I don't want our JV/Intermediate guys to miss the chance to play in Kalani's league.

Parents, please provde me with your feedback on this. I'm assuming Le Jardin will charge $400 to $500 for the entry fee. (Kalani is charging $500.), so I'll ask for everyone to chip in again if we get in.

Note: We will also be playing in CAL and PAA leagues during this period (June to early July). So yes, we will be busy.

WE LOVE THIS GAAAAME!!

Update 4/17, 11:35 am — Coach Kenneth of Le Jardin emailed and said games will begin June 10, games on Wed/Sat. That works better for us.

Update 4/17, 1:45 pm — OK, now it's a little different. Coach Kenneth emailed again and said it's more of a 16U league. That means our older guys (in 10th grade) like Mosi, Radyn, Chase, Tenchi are eligible to play. I'm checking with him to see if our 16-year-olds like Keanu and Michael who are juniors will be eligible to play. I was hoping for more a regular JV or Intermediate league for our younger guys, so I might shop around a little more.

Then again, most of our intermediate guys have turned 14 this spring (or winter). Our guys who can play 13U in CAL and PAA (June) would be Ryan, Jayden, Jance, Walter...

Ikaika League, Intermediate Division, Lanakila gym

Congrats to the Thunder and Coaches Larry and Bino, on a solid win tonight. I was busy at work, didn't have a single bit of worry. I just finished work, still in Kalihi. Mahalo to Bino for bringing the basketballs, camera and white board to the game. Teamwork! No way I can do anything by myself. Love my Thunder ohana! Looking forward to seeing the game video.

BIG MAHALO to Brandon Higashionna for volunteering to shoot game video for the 52nd time. A generous and skilled cinematographer your are, Brandon!

Update 4/17 - Just found out that Chase shot the first half of the game video. That's a first. Mahalo Chase!

Good workout today at Makiki Park. 13 Thunder strong, lots of conditioning, lots of fullcourt work, especially with man defense. We've been focusing a lot more on that this spring and the work is going to pay off.

We got a lot of help today from our friends. Former Thunder ballers Bulla Viena, Drew Viena, Maximillian Roe, and Radyn's older brother Ryan. That was a fearsome foursome and they made sure to give our young Thunder a battle every time. We need it. We got it. We want more every practice, if possible, from our Thunder alums.

Memorial Day Potluck

Coach Bo texted this morning and he's pumped up to do another BBQ potluck. He recommends Memorial Day, which is on Monday, May 25. I'm all for it, too. I won't be spending $200+ on food again, though, so don't expect it to be the usual feast. Counting on all our parents to bring something, doesn't have to be massive, just something for lunch.

Monday, May 25, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Need: Tents, grills/hibachis, drinks, coolers, ice, paper plates/forks/tongs, charcoal, veggies, meats, rice, dessert. Extra folding chairs would be nice. For the guys planing to get in the water, bring your towels and sunscreen.

Parents, please e-mail back to me if you plan on attending and sign up for one of the food items we need.

H1 Thunder 37, Lanakila 24 (JV)

Ikaika League, JV Division, McCully gym

Nice teamwork today against a fast Lanakila squad. Good ball movement, solid defense. First half was low scoring, we were up 6 or 7 points. Lanakila hit a 3, but after that, our guys went on a run and opened the lead to 33-13 with a few minutes left. Our Pups finished the game.

It was the first time in maybe 2 or 3 years that we stayed in a 2-3 zone for almost a whole game. I was tempted to change things up, but it was working and we got a lot of nice offensive push and flow and patience out of it - once we started rebounding much better in the second half.

It was also good to see that our guys are playing better together with each game even though we were missing a bunch of players.

Lineup: Chase, Jonah, Jhevin, Jance, Josh R, Jayden, Jared, Radyn, Kali'a,Tenchi, Sierra, Micah.

Next: Sunday, 3 pm - FT Challege and optional shooting practice. We'll be pau by 4:45 pm.

Monday, 4:30 pm - Practice at Makiki Park. Pau 6:30 pm.

Tuesday, 4:30 pm - Practice at Makiki Park. Pau 6:30 pm.

REMINDER: Sunday 3 pm - FT Challenge

For the guys who haven't done their 20 FTs yet, haven't collected all their sponsors, haven't picked up or printed out a FT Challenge form, do your FTs on Sunday, get your sponsors afterward if that works better. We need to work as a team on every fundraiser, especially the guys who don't have money to pay for uniforms, fees, travel, and have been sponsored for the past year, two years, three years, and want to continue being sponsored.

Responsibility. Accountability. Teamwork. Let's do this!

Friday practice 4:00 pm

My apologies, everybody. I forgot that we do have regular practice on Friday. I work, but not until 6:30 pm (volleyball at Kamehameha School), so we have time.

For the Thunder who have time, please come to Makiki park and we'll get 90 minutes of shooting drills in with some 5-on-5 reps in. That's the plan. The more reps, the better, both individually and as a team.

We'll be done by 5:30 pm.

Thursday Funday

Got started early and we got more than 2 solid hours of work in. Winds kicked up a bit, so we did a lot of 5-on-5 work done, a little more than I had planned. We were 12 strong, so we got lots of reps with halfcourt and fullcourt offense and defense, a lot of positioning work, a lot of technique work on pressure D.

Mahalo to Christian Akana and his friend Brandon for helping us out on our last scrimmage (30 minutes). Coach Bino played in the last 5-on-5, too. Eventually, I want our 15U/17U to have their own practices split off from the 13U/Intermediate. We'll need more guys to turn out for practice before we get to that point. The 13U/Int guys and girls benefit a lot from practicing with and against our older Thunder and Thunder alums. Good workout today, everybody!

Lineup: Jonah, Jance, Jhevin, Trinity, Josh D, Josh R, Skylar, Radyn, Tenchi, Michael, Keanu, Walter.

Not available: Ryan (school project), Micah (no shoes), Kyle (?), Chase (?), Tani (football), Sierra (homework), Chris (football), Kali‘a (shot put practice), Felcris (babysitting), Colin (ankle), Jayden (sister's birthday party), Gabriel (injuries).

Seeing Christian back practicing and helping our younger Thunder was awesome. We've had so many fine young men play for the Thunder and go on to pursue their dreams. Proud of all our Thunder!

Thunder alumnae and friends are welcome to scrimmage our current Thunder at 5:30 pm. Hopefully Ryan (Ray's brother) will be there again to give our guys a serious test.

Next practice: Thursday 4:30 pm

If you can make it, we are going hard again 5-on-5 for a 2-hour practice.
If you can't make it, let me know now and BEFORE practice 551-1054.
ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY AND TEAMWORK.

Big mahalo to the players and parents to contacted me before practice to let me know they couldn't make it. That means a lot to me and all of our guys and gals who are working their tails off for each other.

For our players who are disappearing, not calling or texting  — If you think you don't need to contact me so your teammates know why you aren't showing up, then you are BIG-TIMING us all. We are a TEAM first and there is no place for big-time attitudes. CALL, TEXT before practice.
ONE TEAM UNIFIED UNDER GOD.

Monday funday

Solid 2-hour workout and we got a lot of things done. Reps in our halfcourt offense sets are crucial to beating bigger teams, getting open looks. Knowing how to use good spacing. Mahalo to Radyn's brother, Ryan, for stepping in for our 5-on-5 scrimmage during the last 45 minutes. Ryan was in attack mode, swatting shots and giving us the kind of opposition and challenge at practice we always, always need on a daily basis.

Going up against older, bigger, faster, stronger players every day makes us better, stronger and smarter. Everyone got a lot of conditioning and reps in today. GREAT WORK, THUNDER!!! Thank you for choosing to work hard at practice for your teammates.

Lineup: Radyn, Jonah, Josh R, Micah, Chaz, Skylar, Jance, Sierra, Trinity, Jhevin.
Missing: Colin (ankle), Keanu (?), Kyle (?), Chase (?), Jared (VB), Kapaa (VB), Ryan (school project), Josh D (?), Mosi (Disciples football), Chris (Disciples football), Walter (sick), Gabriel (groin), Kali'a (shot put), Walter (sick), Michael (?), Tenchi (?), Felcris (school proeject).

The most important trait in successful people

Playing smart is key, but having guts and determination is irreplaceable. Our H1 Thunder intermediate team showed it today in a comeback win.

The Most Important Trait Of Successful People May Surprise You
During a recent TED Talk, psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth said that while intelligence matters, a high IQ is not the greatest predictor of success.
Rather, the key is to have grit, or determination — the willingness to push through even when the odds are against you.

H1 Thunder 41, Court Kings 40 (Inter)

Ikaika League, Intermediate Division, Aiea gym

Great teamwork, team defense, POISE and focus by our young Thunder this morning. We overcame our mental errors, rallied from 12 points down, played great defense against a tough, tall and quick Court Kings team. I can't remember who made the go-ahead basket. I know Ryan and Micah hit clutch 3-pointers and Felcris drove and dished to Josh R for a big layup during the comeback.

Then we made a big defensive stop in the final 7 seconds when Court Kings missed a baseline shot. We were missing Colin (ankle) and Jonah (family/Easter) and Josh D (hand), but everybody pitched in and stepped up. Great heart, great team win. You guys really, really deserved this one, and I'm proud of you either way, win or lose, today.

MAHALO to Brandon Higashionna for giving generously to his Thunder brothers and sisters once again. Yesterday marked his 50th game behind the camera as a volunteer, so today is No. 51. (I used to pay him for his awesome skills before he insisted on giving his time freely.) Thank you, Brandon!

MAHALO to Mrs. Chang and Sanford for coming to Aiea and supporting all our kids once again. Thank you for another generous donation, Mrs. Chang!! smile emoticon

Lineup: Chaz, Walter, Trinity, Jhevin, Jance, Skylar, Josh R, Micah, Felcris, Ryan, Jayden.

Just Play 46, H1 Thunder 37 (JV)

Ikaika League, JV Division, McCully gym
MAHALO to Brandon Higashionna for shooting tonight's game video!

Just Play was tough. Tall, long, athletic. Mostly Radford and Leilehua (OIA JV champs) players. But I still think we have the better talent.

We showed lots of heart. Good effort and we made some good plays. The lack of practice time together showed, however. We'd make two or three great defensive plays then lapse and give up easy, open looks. We'd attack with smart decisions, passing the ball and being physical, taking open shots. Then we'd settle for contested shots instead of going back to what had been working.

We'll hammer this out at practice. We were inconsistent on both ends, falling behind in the first half after committing three or four turnovers in a row, and it was uphill the rest of the way. We got within one or two points late in the game, then we stopped attacking the low post, or we didn't run our plays, didn't move the ball for easy cuts and layups.

A lot of this is because TRUST is developed through practice time and reps together. And we haven't had enough of that. We have the talent, but we need chemistry.

And we need to play smarter. Our best defender at the rim ran out to the foul line at least three times instead of protecting the rim, and each time we gave up an easy basket. Add up all the mental errors, the unnecessary turnovers, the average and below-average shots, the missed layups, the missed free throws — at least 10 or 12 — and that's how a close game turns into a loss.

We're 1-1 now in this league. After seven games, the top half of the 16 teams will advance to the championship playoffs. We missed an opportunity tonight. Let's go get the next one.

Lineup: Sierra, Felcris, Jonah, Jhevin, Jance, Trinity, Ryan, Tenchi, Kali'a, Kyle, Radyn, Chase.

We're still missing Colin (ankle), Chris (football), Josh D (hand), Jared (volleyball/Roosevelt varsity basketball), Gabriel (injuries). Tani Mosi will have football practice this week for their Kalihi Disciples championship game.

We will win this championship. Believe. Show up. Work together. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. We've got 8 games left. Run, Thunder. Run to the SHIP.

Swish 34, H1 Thunder 29 (Inter)

Ikaika League, Intermediate Division
Good effort tonight, but we lost a lead of about 6 or 7 points. It was close all the way, but their size (their center is Leo, the big boy who's about 6-foot and 250 lbs now) was a factor. We just missed one too many open shots, and we also took a few too many tough shots inside. It's a division without a shot clock, so hopefully we get smarter about avoiding hard shots in the paint when bigger guys clog things up.

Once we learn this, we will be fine. I know we can win this league, no matter the size disadvantage. But we're going to need everybody at practice on Mondays, and whatever days we schedule. We're a bit out of sync, slow to execute sometimes, and not hitting those short jumpers and floaters below the elbow. Some sweat and reps, we'll get there.

Mahalo to Jason Apuya for keeping score! And Mahalo to Brandon Higashionna for shooting video.

Lineup: Josh R, Trinity, Jance, Jhevin, Chaz, Skylar, Micah, Ryan, Jayden, Felcris, Jonah.
