With the way our team is playing now, it would've been great to play in the upper bracket of the NJB All-Net playoffs — the league wasn't sure about the playoff format before it was announced — but apparently we missed the cut (4-5 regular season) after starting out with a lot of missing guys. Still a terrific accomplishment to finish the season with this run of victories.
Final record: 7-5. Won 5 of our last 6 games. The losses include a 3-point loss to Blue Devils, who tied for first in our division, and forfeit losses to Lanakila White and Kapolei Canes. That day we forfeited to Lanakila White, we played an exhibition game (Josh and Felcris from our 13U played) and we won 25-23. LW finished fourth in our division. Canes finished sixth at 5-4, including that forfeit win over us that happened because of a schedule change by the league that I missed. An official win in any of those three scenarios and we would've been in the championship bracket playoffs.
Like league official (and Lanakila coach) Stephen Chong told me a few times in the past two weeks, if we'd had all our guys for the whole season, things would've been totally different. Us against Windward, OTB, Tar Heels or Raiders (the top 4 in the opposite division), I like our chances. Us against Boom (again), Blue Devils, Honolulu Sharks, Lanakila White (our division), I like our chances just as good.
It is what it is. We had a run of injuries, guys busy with football, changing teams, etc. But we were blessed and we rose above such a tough situation. We gained some fine new players who work their tails off. Our 15U gets a new series of tests in the coming weeks with CAL 15U, Maryknoll JV League, Kalani Varsity League. I'm looking forward to all of it.
It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

Sunday notes
Note #1
Sunday shooting practice - I won't be there because I'll be visiting my baby grand-niece for the first time. But if you have a little time, please go to McCully and get your 200, 300, 500 shots in from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Kalani Varsity League starts on Tuesday and Maryknoll JV League starts a week later. Sharpen your weapons!
Note #2
Thunder 15U championship celebration at Beretania Pizza Hut is Sunday, 4:00 pm (after the 13U play a 2:00 pm game at McKinley).
(Yes, 13U are welcome to celebrate.) I have to be at the Hawaii Hall of Honor banquet by 5:00 pm (Waikiki), so we may need some help driving some of the Thunder home - unless we get to Pizza Hut earlier. If we can get there by 3:30, I won't have to ask for "taxi service" from our generous parents.

H1 Thunder 42, Mililani Storm 40 (15U)
NJB All-Net 15-Under championship game, Kilauea gym
CONGRATULATIONS, CHAMPIONS!!!Tani hit a follow shot in front of the rim as the buzzer sounded to give the Thunder the 15U crown. Both Tani and Raydyn were battling on the offensive glass in those crazy last 10 seconds. They missed at least a couple of putbacks before Tani put up the winner.
We were behind early, unwilling to pound the ball inside. But eventually, we got into their 1-2-2 zone and were rewarded. It's always going to be a challenge, finding that shooting stroke at 9:30 am, 12 hours after playing another game.
It took us almost the entire length of the game to rally and take the lead, but our fullcourt pressure gradually wore the Storm down. It was another championship-level effort defensively, guys hitting the floor for loose balls, battling Mililani's tall posts for everything.
There were big steals (I remember one by Kapaa) and big stops. One of them was a defensive gem by Raydyn, who stepped in to take a charge from Mililani's big man on the break in the second half.
Tani and Kapaa were relentless in the second half, attacking the basket, and we made enough plays with interior passing to get easier shots. We learned a lot in this game, and winning the title is icing on the cake.
I've never seen a team literally go from the bottom to the top within one season, but you guys did it. We forfeited our first game, struggled to put enough players on the court, but nobody complained and everybody hustled. When we got our full lineup back together, it was magical after that.
This is a really interesting group in many ways. It's one of the youngest 15U teams we've had. The only 15-year-olds are Kanehe, Anu, Sifo and Sierra. Everyone else is 14 or 13.
Today's lineup: Gabriel Porras, Sierra Murobayashi, Kanehe Nishimura,Kapaa Nishimura, Jared Elwin, Mosi Afe, Chase Santos, Keanu Pratt, Raydyn Kaleikini.
Mahalo to Eric for shooting the game video again!
Next: Monday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
Tuesday, 7:15 pm - Thunder vs. Buffanblu (Kalani Varsity League). Warmups/stretching 6:15 pm.
NOTE: No shooting practice on Sunday. You guys can go to McCully and shoot when the gym opens 11:00 am. I'm going to be visiting my baby grand-niece in Mililani from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. She'll be gone the rest of summer, so I don't want to miss my chance to meet her.

NJB All-Net 13-Under Division, Kilauea gym
Well-fought battle against another strong Ali‘i team. In a lot of ways, when I watch Ali‘i and/or McCully, I see a lot of history. A lot of my old friends from McCully Youth League, Boys Club League, Boys Club All-Stars ... it's been decades, but the quality of competition, the humility and teamwork, they live on.
I just hope we always play great basketball against them. That's what it takes to outscore these guys. We had another strong effort with the key things: Intensity, Hustle, Teamwork.
It was really interesting to see Chris step up and be willing to dominate on the low post for the first time in a long time, and he sparked our rally. Our fullcourt pressure also took a toll on Ali‘i and we finished the playoffs with a nice win. In all, after losing three of our first four with a very small lineup, we won five of our last six games, most of them without a big man. It was a very strong learning experience for our guys, executing against bigger teams by using space. By using our brains. BIG brains.
Javan took an elbow to the lip and bled all over his jersey. It was quite a sight. Each of our guys has toughness and joy for the game. Big Josh, who is barely 100 pounds (I think) fought on the low post all league long against guys 50 to 100 lbs heavier. Same with Colin. Two talented, skinny guys who were all guts on defense and all skill on offense.
Yes, I still think this crew could've won the league. But from where we were in the first four weeks to where we finished (quarterfinals), we came a long, long way. Arguably one of the smartest teams we've had since starting in 2010. With CAL 13U and Maryknoll JV leagues starting, there's great potential with this group.
Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Thomas Baptiste Takahashi, Micah Visoria, Colin Ramos, Josh M DE Jesus, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Ryan Higashionna, Chris Afe.

Wednesday funday
Solid workout on a sunny, breezy afternoon at Makiki Park. The guys ran their usual 15 laps, then we went straight into reps on press breaker, halfcourt sets. Reps are crucial to building timing and chemistry and we had a good mix of 15U and 13U players today. Job well done.
Today's lineup: Micah Visoria, Javan Montiho, Rayden Kaleikini, Chase Santos, Gabriel Porras, Ryan Higashionna, Walter Berthold, Kanehe Nishimura.
Next: 15U plays on Friday night. If they win, championship game is on Saturday. 13U plays on Saturday morning. Then they start CAL League on Sunday.

Potluck funday
Mahalo to all the parents who made our potluck on Memorial Day so much fun. It was a last-minute get-together, but the kids had a lot of fun. The recommendation of a couple of our parents to have it at the Natatorium - quite fitting for Memorial Day - rather than overcrowded Ala Moana Park was awesome.
Basically, it a team effort again as the Thunder keiki and their families trickled in to the Natatorium through the morning and afternoon. That included one of our recent graduates, Isaiah Visoria, now known to the rest of the world as an All-State guard.
HUGE MAHALO to Coach Bo, who arrived first thing in the morning at 7 am. He brought some BBQ chicken, the grill, equipment and then cooked for the next 12 hours.
For me, it was great to see old and new friends gather together and enjoy some rare free time together relaxing. Thank you, parents!

Potluck at Natatorium: update 9:25 am
Coach Bo and I are coordinating this morning. He's got the tent and grill (and other stuff) and I have the food and charcoal and marshmallows (and other stuff). We're at the Natatorium area, which is nice and kind of empty compared to Ala Moana Beach Park. Over there, there isn't much parking left and it'll get worse since a lot of the parking in the area is being held off for the Lantern festival later today.
If you don't know how to get to the Natatorium, it's past the Aquarium as you go toward Diamond Head. I'll be staying here after Coach Bo arrives. He can't stay, but he'll be back in the afternoon. Please check with Coach Roy 799-7372 if you need a ride.
I'm getting hungry. If you're planning on bringing something, we could use some rice, bottled water. I already have chicken, steak and Portuguese sausage. A table would be handy. Not sure if Bo is bringing one.
The fire is on! First item on the menu: Portuguese sausage.

Friday funday
Shout out to Javan Montiho for a solid Friday workout. It was sunny, hot, not much breeze. Javan got in about 150 to 200 shots from all over the court. Jab-step drills. Pull-up jumpers. Floaters. Lefties. Ballhandling work. Fullcourt layups. Closed out with 50 free-throw attempts (60%). It was 75 minutes of solid effort. That's what it takes to step up to the next level, day by day.

Aiea 15U tourney update
Got the word from the tournament that we're officially in the 10th Grade Division tournament on June 6-8 (Friday-Sunday) at Aiea District Park gym. We still need to collect $20 from each player to help defray costs. The entry fee is $280.
But it's good news. We're in. I expect us to be at full force for some of the games with support from our 13U.

Potluck update (Sunday)
It was rainy all day today (Sunday). Tomorrow (Monday): there's a chance of thunder and showers. The plan is for us (me and Coach Bo) to check Ala Moana Park out 5:30 am. If it's too crowded, I'll let everybody know that we'll potluck at the beach by the Natatorium instead. If the weather's still bad, we'll postpone until next weekend.
Ali‘i Blue 47, H1 Thunder 33 (13U)
NJB All-Net League, 13U Division quarterfinal, Palolo gym
Game of extremes, falling behind 11-0, down 12 at the half, down 15 or 17 in the second half before a huge Thunder run from the 3-point arc. It went from 33-16 or so to 33-all with about 8 minutes left.
Then we went cold again. Ali‘i Blue was the first-place team in Pool B, easily the tallest, biggest team we've faced this season, and with very good guards and a wing who was excellent attacking the basket. They pressed us and we were sloppy, panicky and scared for the first 5 or 6 minutes. The rest of the time, they sat back in a 2-3 zone. The run of threes was coming at some point. When it did, we looked like the best 13U team in the league.
I still believe we were - in spurts. The difference between us and Ali‘i Blue, besides their size, is that they've practiced together consistently for several months. We have great kids, but roughly half our team misses practices for various reasons. That's why our composure against a fullcourt press was down early in the game, and that's why our conditioning is not where it should be.
Even with those limitations, our 13U guys won 4 games in a row after a rough 1-3 start. They figured out who they were as a team that lacked size and depth. They learned to rely on each other, to control tempo, to play fierce halfcourt and fullcourt defense.
Every win is earned by players. Every loss is on a coach. I wish I could've helped you guys find a way to overcome that sluggish start and move into the semifinals. Everybody on this team sacrificed so much because of our limitations. There were times when you played Small Ball so beautifully, it was like watching a high school varsity team. You executed like a machine.
I wonder about our tough, skinny guards like Josh and Colin, how they had to play the low post often and get pushed and bumped by big kids 50 or 100 pounds heavier. I wonder about Javan and all our gunners (Ryan hit two huge threes during our rally today), guys who have hit four, five, even six treys in a game, and how they had to sacrifice so that the team would be in better position to win games because of the change in tempo.
This may not have been our most talented or biggest 13U team, but they had as much heart as any, and they had to play with great courage.
We have one more game to play, a consolation game against McCully next Saturday, 10:30 am at Kilauea gym.
Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Thomas Baptiste, Micah Visoria, Ryan Higashionna, Josh M DE Jesus, Colin Ramos, Felcris Jay CorpuzAhadain, Chris Afe.
Thanks also to Kali'a Mielke, Kyle Moraga and Roy Moraga for turning out to support the Thunder 13U.

15U - Waiting to hear back on Aiea tourney
15U - I'm waiting to hear back from Rob Godinez of the Aiea Blazers. We were on the wait list for their 10th Grade (JV) tournament when he informed me that a team dropped out a few days ago. If he brings us in, we play in their tourney June 6-8. As of this morning when we discussed this, we have 9 players ready to go, though a couple have some football commitments during the weekend.
We'll also have some support from our 13U crew.
Each player will chip in $20 toward the entry fee since this tourney was not on our budget. (A month ago, we barely had enough players to play a game.) The entry fee is $280, so I'll pay for the remaining cost. Just waiting to hear back from Coach Rob.

Our first-half defensive intensity was awesome. We took a 12- or 15-point lead early and had control against another tall team. Chris played in this game and helped us on the defensive boards and pressure. We were sloppy sometimes offensively, but we played well enough to win.
13U is the largest age-group division in the league, so this game put us in the quarterfinals tomorrow (Sunday). Then would be two more wins next weekend for the title. Four wins to the ship and we are one win in.
Good battle ahead tomorrow. Let's make the most of it. Play hard, play smart and have fun.
Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Thomas Baptiste, Micah Visoria, Ryan Higashionna, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Josh M DE Jesus, Colin Ramos, Chris Afe.

NJB All-Net 15U Division quarterfinals, Kilauea gym
Very good to have another (almost) full lineup in 15U. It was the first game of the day for the league at Kilauea and the gym wasn't opened until a few minutes before the tip-off, so I knew our guys wouldn't be really warmed up for awhile. Once we got the ball inside and worked into the heart of that 2-3 zone, we did much better.
Defense carried us again. Strong most of the time, halfcourt and fullcourt. Ray did a super job on the defensive boards. Our transition offense is getting better each time.
Today's lineup: Chase Santos, Gabriel Porras, Jared Elwin, Keanu Pratt,Mosi Afe, Raydyn Kaleikini, Kapaa Nishimura, Kanehe Nishimura, Sierra Murobayashi.
Lela Afe-passion, Lehua Nishimura, Eric Murobayashi.

Wednesday funday
Solid workout. Got some conditioning work done, but we were sloppy in drills, especially 3-man weave. Some things can be corrected with daily workouts, but for now we're going with 3x per week. Until later.
Several of our guys are busy with school practices, but we were still 8 strong today. We keep working on halfcourt offensive execution (reads), and with more time, we'll improve in this area as a team. Especially the newer guys. Going 4-on-4 or 5-on-5 every time is crucial.
Today's lineup: Kali'a Mielke (toe injury), Gabriel Porras, Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna, Kyle Moraga, Thomas Baptiste, Felcris Jay CorpuzAhadain, Josh Roberts. Practice went by quickly and the sun is up longer this time of year. Kind of tricky.

We may enter a 17U team if there is interest and funds. Entry fee is $420. Also, we are on the wait list for Aiea's 10th Grade tournament (June 6-8).
Big fundamentals
I see some 45 UCLA action (feed elbow, UCLA cut off the other elbow = layup), some 8-ball and 5-ball action on the same play (high pick/roll, corner pick/roll). Think we'll call that one 85 (and 95).

NJB All-Net playoff schedule
NJB All-Net playoff schedule for the first round has been released today. Our 15U and 13U play on Saturday.
9:30 am - Thunder (A7th) vs. Central Elite (B10th), Kilauea gym. Warmups 8:30 am, Kilauea outside court.
We have a real chance to go far in 15U with the way we're playing good basketball right now. One game at a time.
2:00 pm - Thunder (A4th) vs. Windward (B5th), Palama gym. Warmups 1:00 pm, Palama outside court.
No question, if we play Small Ball, we can outsmart and outexecute big teams. Keep playing smart and we will win this. If Chris Afe can play, even better.

Strong defensive work today. 10 Thunder strong and everybody worked their tails off defensively. We got a couple of nice backdoor reads against man defense, but we also got a lot of opportunities off our fullcourt pressure. This group really worked hard start to finish.
Great to have our returnees back from their busy schedules, including Sifo.
Big mahalo to Aunite Lehua Nishimura for shooting the game video.
Today's lineup: Kapaa Nishimura, Kanehe Nishimura, Jared Elwin, Gabriel Porras, Chase Santos, Raydyn Kaleikini, Keanu Pratt, Mosi Afe, Drake Lee, Sisifo Lauvao.

Got the word that our 13U Thunder won again. I had to work (still at the baseball stadium) so I'm looking forward to seeing the game video. Mahalo to Coach Carl for picking up Josh and Felcris, and mahalo to Carl and Coach Larry for their help today. Between those two and Coach Roy, our dads are doing great this year. I can't say I'm surprised at all.
BIG mahalo to Auntie Arlene for hauling the basketballs and video camera/tripod to the game. Mahalo to Brandon Higashionna for shooting the game video.
Mahalo to our ballers, too, for being mature and playing through any adversities along the way.

Travel plans, chapter 2
Time is of the essence when it comes to summer travel. But I haven't stopped dreaming. The best scenario is probably Las Vegas and playing two tourneys within one week. The two best organizations are Bigfoot Hoops (Hal Pastner) and Under One Roof.
Bigfoot's high school tournaments are designed to draw college recruiters. They are actually working together with Swoosh, the guys who ran the tournaments we played in last year (LV, Anaheim), to run their two biggest tournaments in mid-July, both in Vegas. Their 13U Division had 24 teams last year from across the country. Their 14U Division had 70 teams. Massive.
Bigfoot has been around for more than 20 years and you can actually find scores of all their past tournaments on their website (bigfoothoops.com). That's being organized. Fee per team is $595.
Then there's Under One Roof, which a lot of Hawaii teams play in. (Nothing against Hawaii teams, but we play them 9 months out of the year already.) They don't draw as many teams as Bigfoot, but all the games are played in one site: Las Vegas Convention Center. The good thing about that is ease of commuting. Bad thing (to me) is that most of the courts are made of plastic (TerraFlex), the same stuff you see college volleyball teams play on. Only the center courts are normal hardwood.
UOR has been around for eight years and their biggest tourneys are in mid to late July.
The biggest difference between the two organizations is that Bigfoot games are high-school regulation time. The clock stops on all whistles, which means a longer game.
If you look at the dates below, it's possible we could play in one Bigfoot tourney and one UOR tourney. That way, we get to experience both worlds in a span of just one week. Playing in two UOR tournaments in the same week (instead of a Bigfoot tourney) means we'd probably play a lot of the same teams again, maybe three times. No need for that.
I suggest this:
July 16-20 - Bigfoot Hoops Las Vegas Live
July 22-24 - Under One Roof/Jam On It Las Vegas Classic
This way, we're on the road for roughly one week in two tourneys. I'd love for us to play in Bigfoot's biggest tourney, also called the Las Vegas Classic (the original Classic), but that isn't until July 23-27.
* * *
2013 Las Vegas Classic: 14U had 70 teams from across the country
$595
2014 Las Vegas Live - July 16-20 (w/ Swoosh)
2014 Las Vegas Classic - July 22-24 (w/ Swoosh)
Note: Game is high school regulation time (stop clock on dead balls).
Under One Roof (Jam On it) $600
2014 AAU West Coast National Championship - July 17-20
2014 Las Vegas Classic - July 22-24
2014 Jam On It Grand Finale - July 25-27
Notes: Teams must register with AAU ($125). Games are at LV Convention Center.
* * *
Note: I still have an affinity for the MAYB (Mid-America Youth Basketball) organization, which hosts dozens of tournaments across the country every weekend during summer. Most of them are in smaller towns like Sioux Falls, North Dakota or Evansville, Indiana or Colorado Springs, Colo. But they've got a few in Houston and Chicago, too.
I'd love for us to play in a different state and town each year. Or overseas. But it does cost more to travel beyond LA and Vegas (air fare).
And if the dream doesn't happen this summer . . .
• We're busy in June with Maryknoll JV League, Kalani Varsity League, CAL 13U/15U/17U
• We have the Aiea tournament in June (8th Grade Division), wait list for 10th Grade Division.
• We could also play in the NJB Summer Classic in July.
• We could plan to travel next summer with a similar itinerary.
But I'd rather go this year if possible before everyone gets older and busier. We had a special group of Thunder last year in 13U with great chemistry (when we were 4-1 in Vegas and 4-0 in Anaheim to win the Swoosh Ultimate Showcase). I think it's still the same now, if not better — when everybody is there. Last year's 12U guys have really developed nicely and our new additions are great guys and players.
Feedback - let me know what you think.

Friday transportation/coaching (update)
Aloha Thunder Parents:
I have to work Friday afternoon and evening at the state baseball championships. It's the last night of the high school year, but it also falls on a Thunder game night. Our 13U plays Dream Hoops at Kilauea gym, 6:20 pm. There are two title games (Division I and II), so I'm stuck from 3:30 pm until 10 pm (or later).
Is anyone available to pick up Josh and Felcris? They can meet at the Kalihi Zippy's (North King St.). Normally, I pick them and other guys up 2 hours before a game, especially on a Friday (traffic). Pickup time can be adjusted.
Coach Larry and Coach Roy might be working late that day, so please let me know if you can help out. If they can't make the game on time, Carl and/or Ray, please take charge. Mahalo!
Update 12:15 pm
Uncle Carl (Javan's dad) has graciously offered to give guys a ride to the game on Friday. He'll pick up Josh M DE Jesus and Felcris Jay CorpuzAhadain 5:30 pm at Zippy's (near their houses) on North King St.
If you need to contact Carl, his # is 428-3576.
I'm working from 3:30 to 10 pm so I won't be able to give guys ride and coach the game. Carl did a solid job coaching last weekend, and Coach Roy and Coach Larry will help out once they finish work.

Light turnout on Tuesday but we got some solid work in for 45 minutes.Thomas Baptiste and Kanehe Nishimura did a lot of ballhandling work, shooting fundamentals. Good to see Kanehe back to his fast, explosive self after healing up from the injuries.

Monday funday
Some good work done today. Couldn't get in a ton of shooting until after practice (when the wind died down), but we got some conditioning in and a good 5-on-5 scrimmage for 30 minutes. Worked on one new halfcourt offensive play and got lots of reps on our other stuff for zone and man offense.
The team of Jared, Gabriel, Chase, Sierra and Drake finished in a tie with the team of Kali‘a, Kyle, Kapaa, Javan and Ryan 27-all.
Today's lineup: Jared Elwin, Gabriel Porras, Chase Santos, Sierra Murobayashi, Drake Lee, Kali'a Mielke, Kyle Moraga, Kapaa Nishimura, Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna.
Next: Tuesday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

H1 Thunder 73, Tribe 21 (13U)
NJB All-Net 13U, Palama gym
Mother's Day celebrations really cut into our lineup, but the guys started the game with just 5 and finished with just 5. Javan's dad, Coach Carl, stepped in and did a great job. By the time we got there from the 15U game, there was just 13 minutes left and the lead was 50-16. Coach Carl had the guys sitting back in a zone, no pressing at all by then.
Mahalo, Coach Carl! Mahalo also to Julie for shooting the game video.
Today's lineup: Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Colin Ramos, Joshua de Jesus.
Arlene Higashionna, Julie Montiho, Ray-Marlyn Ramos, Thomas Baptiste,Tanner Takahashi.

Another tall team - one of their guys is supposedly 6-foot-10. Another smart win for our group of new guys. Having Anu back helped a lot, and Kapaa and Kanehe are as healthy as they've been in a long time. We got superb defense most of the way from all 7 Thunder. That was the difference.
Our fullcourt pressure and hustle, especially by Drake, Gabriel, Chase - that made a huge difference. Instead of being at the mercy of guys 6-10, 6-2, 6-0 in the paint, the game was played at midcourt and in the backcourt.
We're getting smarter, but we're not quite there yet. A lot of unforced errors in the final 3 minutes. We almost gave this away. But be proud of this win, Thunder. You gritted this out and earned the victory.
Raydyn, Kapaa and Anu, great job playing physical in halfcourt defense. That's how it is done!
Mahalo to the Santos ohana for fixing the video camera problem, and mahalo to Uncle Gerard for shooting the game video again.
Today's lineup: Kanehe Nishimura, Kapaa Nishimura, Drake Lee, Gabriel Porras, Chase Santos, Raydyn Kaleikini, Keanu Pratt.

Reminder: Change is good
Just a reminder for all players and parents to bring your loose change to the game today as part of our current fundraiser. It all adds up, but you gotta bring it to make it count.
Maryknoll JV League
Coach Kelly Grant invited us to play in the Maryknoll Junior Varsity League this morning. Entry fee is $475. Games will be on Wednesday and Friday nights, Saturday mornings starting in the second week of June.
Coupled with the Kalani Varsity League on Tuesday and Thursday nights, plus CAL 13U and 15U (and maybe 17U), our June will be full of basketball games all week long (with a few byes here and there).
What I need now is a list of committed players. I want to know who is committed to play in the Maryknoll JV League. Who's committed to playing in the Kalani League. Who's committed to playing in CAL (weekends).
If and when we have close to a full lineup, we will compete very well in these leagues. But I don't want to make assumptions anymore and have a skeleton crew lineup for a single game anymore. So let me know if you're in or not for these leagues.
We played in the Maryknoll JV League two years ago and that was fun. And close by.

Boom 45, Thunder 27 (15U)
NJB All-Net 15U League, Kilauea gym
Boom sat in a 2-3 zone most of the game and we struggled with ball movement, low-post play and chemistry - not surprising with our influx of new guys and so many missing players. It's not easy to get everyone on the same page with some guys busy at school (varsity) practices), but we'll keep building some cohesion through any adversity.
We had some good moments when Boom tried to press us fullcourt, but some old habits (too much dribbling against zone press and halfcourt zone) will have to disappear for our team to improve as a unit. That takes time and a lot of patience.
The smart teams will zone us, and any time the go man on us, that's our opportunity to attack, to finish at the basket strong or drive and kick. Defensively, we have good plays and then we have lapses (early positioning, not playing strong, boxing out), and that's a product of lack of practice time together - again, not a surprise for a group that's been together for just a few weeks.
It's true that most of our 15U team is 14 years old, but I'm not focusing on that. We need reps and playing time together, and with that, the talent and skill will pour out. Patience.
Last note: Good to see Kanehe back on the court - healthy!
Mahalo to Uncle Eric Murobayashi for shooting the game video again. Mahalo to Uncle Gerard for getting the basketballs and video camera to the game on time while I was busy at work (state judo tourney).

Tuesday funday
Good, solid workout on fundamentals today. Got a lot of ballhandling and on-ball defensive work done, plus some conditioning and 3-on-3 work. Most of our guys need a lot of work on pick-and-roll execution — a lack of penetration by the ballhandler, and screeners not rolling. Good work today.
Today's lineup: Josh Roberts, Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria, Javan Montiho, Chazz.
Next: Thursday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

11 strong today. We got some conditioning work in that was much needed (and still is). Then we scrimmaged with Josh Alexandre (Roosevelt) and his friends for 30 minutes, and had our own intrasquad scrimmage for another 30 minutes or so. One of the pluses of a controlled scrimmage is that we can work on specific things like press breaker, inbounds plays, halfcourt zone offense, etc. and correct simple mistakes on the spot.
We started out very lethargic today, but everybody got busy and played quicker, crisper, sharper for the rest of practice.
Let's keep it rolling tomorrow, Thunder!

Just got word from one of our parents that McCully gym is closed today. I'll still be there on the outside court at 11:00 am for the guys who want to shoot and scrimmage today, also for the folks who won't get this message in time. Bummers, but it's OK to have a day off.
For the guys who show up and get their 200+ shots in, we'll get some Waiola Shave Ice afterwards.

Another close game down to the final shot. Kapaa's tough 3-point shot at the buzzer missed.
I say that because even though the new guys are so fresh, they are very coachable and they hustle their tails off. And they have talent. We have some basic things to work on, and once we get there, we'll have more chemistry. The 8 or 10 points we gave away early in the second half will turn into 8 or 10 points we'll score on layups soon enough. Just need to work on our pressbreaker and a few other things.
Like our roster in OBL, this group is mostly 14U, yet we're competing with everyone.

Another close game down to the final shot. Kapaa's tough 3-point shot at the buzzer missed.
We stayed close all game long, though we trailed the whole way. In All-Net, our roster is limited due to the no-double roster rule, but with just 7 players in this game, everybody got lots of playing time.
We trailed 20-18 at halftime and lost the game by 3 even though most of the guys haven't played with each other before aside from one game and one practice. That's why I'm optimistic about this group, even with half of the guys missing for various reasons.

We led by 6 or 7 before halftime, but the well ran dry in the second half. OC used its usual 1-2-2 zone all game long, which is fine as long as we're hitting open 3-point shots. When they extended the defense, we had problems taking care of the ball.

Our 13U saw the same thing earlier in the season and showed great patience. Our 15U, not quite as patient, and that hurt us some. We also weren't deep with experienced 15U guys today, particularly with Kyle not available.
I'm glad we stayed close for more than a half against a team significantly older than us. One of OC's best 15U players is an 8th grader, but for the most part, we were a 14U team going up against an older, bigger team and we played well for a long stretch.
Without enough depth and quickness, we couldn't afford to press like we normally do. It was a solid season for our 15U. But I have no doubt that if we had our usual lineup, we control this game and win.
My biggest regret, maybe, is that we didn't pull the ball out while we had a decent lead in the first half. Our rhythm and ball movement at that point was very good, though, so I decided not to.
Season over in OBL. We reached the semifinals in both 13U and 15U. Good, striving for greatness.
