H1 Thunder 44, H4C 21 (13U)

H1 Thunder 44, Hoops4Christ 21
OBL 13U Division, Koko Head gym
Started off flat and slow, didn't score for almost 6 minutes. Then we slowly started to play better on both ends of the court. Got a nice boost from our reserves tonight. When a brand-new, slippery, plasticky basketball is in use, always best to pound the ball inside. Overall, good team hustle, especially with our fullcourt pressure. That wore this team down in the second half.

Tonight's lineup: Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Josh Roberts, Walter Berthold, Joshua de Jesus, Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho, Kapaa Nishimura, Micah Visoria.

Next: Saturday, 11:00 am - Thunder vs. Lanakila, Aiea Intermediate Division semifinal.

Thursday funday

Good shooting workout with Javan Montiho, Walter Berthold andKyle Moraga. Kyle got an extra 45 minutes of shooting work in after practice. Worked on a lot of mid-range (floaters, jumpers), a lot of 3s, including 5-Mac and 5-Ball. I want us to get to a point where there is high chemistry on the court in any situation. Where the cuts and screens are imbedded in every player's brain, opening up layups and 3-point shots. It takes reps and intelligence, and I know we're getting there. When it gets beyond the technical part, it becomes one flow.

This Week (updated 2/27)

MAJOR UPDATE, Wednesday, 11:55 pm
I got a reminder from PAA League about this week's games and realized that I totally forgot about the new, revised schedule they sent last weekend. I was on the road working on the time and completely forgot about it after that.

So this is the big change: No 15U game Thursday (tonight), no 15U games on Sunday afternoon. But we still have a 13U game on Friday night (OBL), and Intermediate AND 15U games on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Intermediate playoff games and our 15U games are at about the same exact time on those days.

In other words, our 15U has to show up in full force for us to compete and avoid forfeiting on each day.

THIS WEEK
Thursday, Feb. 27, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park. (NO GAME.)

Friday, Feb. 28, 6:30 pm - vs. H4C @ Koko Head gym (OBL 13U)

Saturday, Mar. 1, 11:00 am - vs. Lanakila (Aiea Intermediate Division semifinals)
Saturday, Mar. 1, 11:15 am - vs. Asing Park Heat @ McCully gym (PAA 15U)
Note: OBL may still move Sunday's 15U game to Saturday, which means we would have to forfeit one of those 15U games. I'm working with OBL to avoid this, but there may not be another option.

### Sunday, Mar. 2, 10:20 am - vs Sharks @ Kilauea gym (CAL MSG semifinal)
*** Sunday, Mar. 2, 10:45 am - vs. Kalakaua (OBL 15U) (*** originally Sat 3/1)

Wednesday funday

Some guys still injured, some busy with school practice, but we still worked out today. Got ballhandling work in, more than shooting since it was windy sometimes at Makiki Park today.
Today's lineup: Ryan Higashionna, Walter Berthold, Dwane Perez. And Dwayne's pal, Jovin.

Next: Thursday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

UPDATE - Monday, 1:45 pm
Just got word that CAL Middle School Gold Division will have a semifinal-round format. The league has schedule us to play on Sunday, 10:20 am at Kilauea gym against the Sharks. This is cool. We've had our losses, but we still get a shot at a championship.

However, this means that we have be make sure we have an adequate number of players for the 15U game (OpenCourt League), which is at 10:45 am, Koko Head gym.

Kailua 47, H1 Thunder 33

PAA 15U Division, Palolo gym
We were within 9 (29-20) at one point, but we had a few too many turnovers and lack of execution to stay with this team. Kailua has its kids up from last year's 13U, just like us, but also has a 6-7 center from ‘Iolani who makes a difference.

We pulled him out of the key with some nice play work by Manoa and Kali‘a. Kali‘a hit two or three treys, all in the flow, smooth as silk. That will continue to be a big weapon for us against these older, bigger teams. We were missing our sophomores (not sure where they were), so this was basically our 14U Thunder today.

I know we haven't had much time to practice. Of our 9 Thunder today, three of them barely know plays and two of them are basically brand new. I like the hustle we had today, having to work on the boards against a team this big; including Kamakana Winquist, Kailua has about 5 or 6 guys around 6-2 or taller. But we have speed, shooting and, sometimes, smart offensive teamwork.

I really hope 1) that we get more practice time together, and 2) we get to play Kailua again. We know how to beat them. It's a matter of execution on both ends.

Special props to Kapaa and Kyle. Kapaa suffered an ankle injury yesterday and Kyle got an ankle injury early in today's game when one of the Kailua players stepped on his foot. They played through injury like grown men. Thanks guys.

Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Hsien Pascua, Kenehe Nishimura, Gabriel Porras, Kyle Moraga, Kapaa Nishimura, Manoa Kualii Moe, Kali'a Mielke, Keanu Pratt.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm, practice, Makiki Park. Free throws for the guys who missed the Challenge. A lot of reps (ballhandling, passing, shooting).

FT Challenge: A fun day

Nice work by everybody today: Thunder shooters, parents and supporters.

We had 11 shooters today who attracted a total of 49 sponsors. Many of our kids had donors who simply contributed a lump sum, while the rest of our contributors went by the $1 per FT standard. Thank you, everybody, for making this a success!

Here is the amount pledged per shooter, along with their FT totals.

name FT/FTA sponsors $ to collect

Keanu Pratt 15/20 2 $30

Kyle Moraga 15/20 0 $0

Hsien Pascua 14/20 2 $28

Kali‘a Mielke 13/20 3 $86

Walter Berthold 13/20 9 $117

Kenehe Nishimura 12/20 4 $86

Javan Montiho 12/20 10 $120

Gabriel Porras 12/20 3 $65

Coach Paul 11/20 5 $77

Kapaa Nishimura 8/20 (ankle) 4 $64

Josh Roberts 8/20 5 $40

Then we have special donors, Shawn Toyozaki and Mrs. Patti Chang and Sanford Chang (son).
Shawn had a very interesting format for his sponsorship: The best 5 shooters would get $2 per shot made, but also run 2 laps per miss. He offered to do $1, but of course, $2 is the better deal for our shooters.

So, the 5 best shooters today were (Shawn's contribution plus laps total)

Keanu Pratt $30 (10 laps)

Kyle Moraga $30 (10 laps)

Hsien Pascua $28 (12 laps)

Kali‘a Mielke $26 (14 laps)

Walter Berthold $26 (14 laps)

Mrs. Chang and Sanford donated a lot and asked that it be spread among our Thunder who have a one-parent family. So this adds to the total for these guys:

Keanu Pratt $50

Kenehe Nishimura $50

Kapaa Nishimura $50

Our grand total for today: $1,003.
That's an awesome number, much greater than I anticipated. We had some missing shooters today, and they'll take their free throws at practice. So the grand total will increase.

PARENTS, please help out with the collection of the funds. It's important for our players to be involved, but there may be situations when they need your help. Please collect this week and bring the funds by next Sunday.

Again, MAHALO to our parents, shooters and supporters. We raised a healthy amount of funds — it would've taken us two car washes to amass this amount. Stay tuned for the next fundraiser. We're chipping away at our costs bit by bit. God continues to bless us with opportunities and fun :)

Coach Roy, thank you for bringing Kyle and Hsien. Mark, thanks for the OJ.

Sharks 41, H1 Thunder 39 (15U)

PAA 15U, Kilauea gym

All in all, happy with the hustle and passing. We got stronger in the paint defensively after the first few minutes. Then we fell behind by 10 early in the second half, rallied and had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer. Two chances.
Despite the loss, we learned some things.
1. Swing the ball quickly instead of forcing penetration. If we get an open 3 off the fastbreak, we'll take it.
2. We've got to do reps on footwork. The traveling calls in this game are correctible but only if there's work put to it.
3. Guys who hesitate at the 3-point line usually turn the ball over at all levels (pro/college/prep), and that's a result of lack of 3-point shooting practice. Nothing more, nothing less. So come to practice and cash in!
4. We've got some 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 transition work to do. In one situation, we were on defense in a 3-on-2 and neither guy stopped the ball. Layup by the Sharks. In a 2-on-1 late in the game, a give-and-go would've made it an easy layup. This is the kind of stuff that we learn when we're 14, 13 years old. So don't get down. Just learn, get better and enjoy the ride!

Our guys under the basket fought like hell against those tall Sharks. Kapaa, Kyle, Kali‘a, great work. We did nice work defensively on the 3-point line too with Anu, Sifo, Sierra, Manoa.

We were missing a lot of our 15U guys, but we did pretty great with the Thunder we had. This is only the first game of the 15U season and there will be playoffs, so hopefully we start to peak from here. Overall, this was a fun game even though half the guys haven't been to a practice in ages.

Tonight's lineup: Sierra Murobayashi, Joshua de Jesus, Gabriel Porras, Sisifo Lauvao, Kapaa Nishimura, Keanu Pratt, Kyle Moraga, Kali'a Mielke, Manoa Kualii Moe.

I really like this group. Add in some of our veterans like Mosi Afe, Chris Afe and Tone Lauvao, plus some of our 13U standouts like Jared Elwin and that's a real tough 15U team. Let's get better one day, one practice, one game at a time. Proud of you guys! WE LUB THIS GAME!

Thunder Angels lub us

Our Thunder Angels never cease to bless us. Two loyal supporters have donated $150 for our FT Challenge. Their only request is that the money will be divided and counted toward the FT totals of our guys from single-parent homes. Why? It's a little tougher to find sponsors in that situation. I know because my brother and I were raised by an awesome single mom. MAHALO to our ANGELS.

Tuesday: FT Challenge update

FT Challenge! How many sponsors did you get today? We need to get all the sponsors we can as a team, and if you are a good FT shooter, even more so. Ask your parents, your uncles, your aunties, your teachers, your counselor, your principal, your cafeteria lady, your mom and dad's co-workers, your friend's parents.

Let's do this, Thunder!

If you don't have the form yet, get it from me at Wednesday's game.

4 diehard Thunder. One longtimer Jared Elwin, Walter Berthold. One semi-new (Josh Roberts). One brand new (Gabriel). It's dark, cloudy and ominous, that sky up there. But it hasn't rained for a few hours, the court is semi-dry and we're going to get our 200+ shots in. Just another day in the life. Never fear a few drops from above.

*** Updated Mon 2/17 - Game time changes for Thursday and Sunday.

We have games every day from Wednesday through Sunday. Please remember to bring your copy of birth certificate if you are on 15U.

Please note: We have a scheduling conflict on Saturday morning. I'm in touch with both Aiea and PAA leagues and this should be resolved soon.

H1 Thunder 65, KKB 40 (Int)

CAL Intermediate, Kilauea gym
We were 9 strong this afternoon. Cloudy and cold outside, but hot Thunder inside. Javan made 5 or 6 treys and Felcris made 3 more. They came off the bench with Kyle, giving us a very strong second wave. We played smart ball, ran the court well, played strong defense and we all shared the ball. That's a big reason we got so many open looks inside and outside. Job well done!

Today's lineup: Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho, Felcris JayCorpuz Ahadain, Kyle Moraga, Kapaa Nishimura, Joshua de Jesus, Jared Elwin and Micah Visoria. Mahalo to Auntie Chit for shooting the game video.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm - 15U and 13U practice at Makiki Park.
BUSY WEEK AHEAD. We play on Wednesday (PAA 15U), Thursday (PAA 15U), Friday (CAL Intermediate), Saturday (Aiea Intermediate and PAA 13U) and Sunday (PAA 15U).

WE LUB THIS GAME!

Sunday funday

15U practice indoors was solid. Good shooting workout for Kali‘a Mielke, Sierra Murobayashi and Gabriel. 50-point drill for the three of them, running sets. Kyle got there later and we worked on pick/roll offense, then more shooting reps.

A lot of missing faces for 15U today. Getting together and working on our plays, our defense and our chemistry is a must. Playing basketball the right way is a must. The guys who don't agree don't have to play. We have plenty of players. But I'm still hoping we have the same crew that won the Pearl City JV League last season after finishing the NJB All-Net League with 6 straight wins.

We can build on that or just have our younger Thunder step in completely. I'm OK either way. I just want us to have hungry, team-first players. WE LUB THIS GAME!

15U practice Sunday 11 am

Thunder 15U - Practice Sunday, 11:00 am, McCully gym.
Time to get reacquainted, run through some plays, do a lot of shooting. We start playing in PAA 15U on Wednesday. No practice, no play. Call/text me 551-1054 if you need a ride or can't make it. WE LUB THIS GAME!

15U - I need a copy of every player's birth certificate. Check with me if I have extra copies from last year.

13U who are on the 15U roster are welcome to practice/shoot too. We have a CAL Intermediate game at 3:20 pm, so if you are tired or can't make the 11 am practice, see you at the game.
Sisifo Lauvao, Keanu Pratt, Sierra Murobayashi Eric Murobayashi,Tone Lauvao, Huthaifah H Dalia,

H1 Thunder 40, PAA 32 (13U)

PAA 13U playoffs
We headed to McCully gym (heavy traffic) after our game at Aiea and made it on time. We played much smarter as a team and had much better ball movement, defense (less reaching) and still played hard though we were a little tired and played with just 7 guys.

Micah got hot from the 3-point line in this one and everybody did a pretty good job on the boards. Finished the day with a split. Looking to improve every time out for games and practices.

Lineup: Javan Montiho, Josh Roberts, Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria, Jared Elwin, Joshua de Jesus, Kapaa Nishimura.

Next: Sunday, 3:20 pm - Thunder vs. KKB (CAL Intermediate), Kilauea gym. Warmups 2:20 pm. WE LUB THIS GAME!!

Blazers 44, Thunder 43 (Int)

Aiea Blazers I 44, H1 Thunder 43, OT
Aiea Intermediate Division

We played hard, but not as smart as usual. A lot of fundamental breakdowns. I knew it could happen because we haven't had much time to practice lately. Hopefully, we learn, learn, learn. All of us, definitely including myself.

Aiea always plays smart, fundamental basketball and their "1" teams are always title contenders. Coach Rod is a helluva coach.

For us, we had won every game in our division, and this game was a "crossover" game to complete the regular-season schedule. Next Saturday, we start the playoffs in that league. The unbeaten season is no more, but a championship is definitely in our reach. Got to have full practices, that would help. A full lineup would be great, too.

Today's lineup: Walter Berthold, Javan Montiho, Hsien Pascua, Micah Visoria, Kali'a Mielke, Jared Elwin, Ryan Higashionna, Kapaa Nishimura, Joshua de Jesus.

Effort & Excellence

February 2012
This is a conversation I remember with Dyrbe Enos after his senior season at Kamehameha. Not verbatim, but pretty close to it.

Me: Your accuracy is still high, but I noticed your release is even quicker this year.
Dyrbe: I really worked hard on it, so thanks.
Me: That first preseason game against Radford, it was impossible for them to stop you, the release was so quick. (Dyrbe scored 31 points on just 14 shot attempts and had just 1 turnover.) How often did you work on your shot?
Dyrbe: 500 shots every day.
Me: Wow! Four or five days a week?
Dyrbe: No, every day.
Me: Seven days a week?
Dyrbe: Yup.
Me: When did you take a break?
Dyrbe: No breaks.
Me: No breaks? Like, every single day of the offseason, seven days a week?
Dyrbe: Yup. Can't take a day off.

He is one of the best shooting guards in the history of Hawaii high school basketball. Dyrbe now plays for the University of Hawaii.

Sunday funday

Good indoor workout for 100 minutes today. No car wash, but we got our reps in, a lot of 3-point shooting, some basic work on halfcourt offense, a little halfcourt scrimmage. Good work, Thunder!
Today's lineup: Jared Elwin, Kyle Moraga, Manoa Kualii Moe,Kali'a Mielke, Kapaa Nishimura, Keneke Nishimura, Gabriel.

Drill time: In our 50-shot drill (3-point range), Kyle was 35-for-50. (The early morning shooting at the Y didn't hurt.) Manoa was 33-for-50. Outstanding for 14-year-olds. And still getting better.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm, practice at Makiki Park. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Sunday Shootaround

11:00 am, Shooting fun at McCully Gym. No car wash today, so everybody can get 200+ reps in. I look at sharpshooting like this:
10,000 reps move a shooter up by one notch. Example: If you are a D shooter, 10,000 reps should move you up to D+.
10k more, C-.
10k more, C.
10k more, C+.
10k more, B-.
10k more, B.
10k more, B+.
10k more, A-.
10k more, A.

If you are already an A+ shooter, then the 10k's keep your shot sharp.

It takes about 20-25 minutes to get 200 shots in. If you're walking slowly, it'll take an hour.
200+ reps per day x 50 days = 10,000 reps
If you do shooting reps 5x per week, it will take you 10 weeks to get 10k reps in. Or you could do 400+ reps and get it done in half the time. It's a beautiful thing. Basketball. You get what you put into it. The cost? Your time, your dedication, your heart. Doesn't take a single dollar to become an A+ sharpshooter.

Here's another way to grade your shooting skills. Catch-and-shoot drill, 10 reps per spot (corners, wings and top). That's 50 shots. No defender. No dribble.
> Make less than 30 out of 50 (less than 60%) = F
> Make at least 30 / 50 (60%) = D
> Make at least 35 / 50 (70%) = C
> Make at least 40 / 50 (80%) = B
> Make at least 45 / 50 (90%) = A

That's the math. It's hard math in more than one sense. But you can improve the reality by being mechanical, by being committed to working on your form, your release, your reps EVERY DAY. Dyrbe Enos (UH guard from Kamehameha) took 500 shots every day in high school, 365 days a year.

WE LUB THIS GAME!

Car Wash: Postponed

*** NO THUNDER CAR WASH TODAY (2/9) ***
Turns out there was a scheduling conflict with a volleyball team that had rescheduled from a previous date. The gas station manager lady let them have today's car wash. Ours will be rescheduled to March. Thank you for your support, Thunder Ohana!

In the meantime, we're still selling Thunder T-shirts as a fundraiser item and looking for other fundraising ideas. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Car Wash Head Count (Update Sat)

As of right now (Saturday 1:30 pm), these are the only players/parents who said they'll be ready to work at 8:00 am on Sunday.

Kapaa Nishimura
Jared Elwin
Josh Roberts
Coach Paul

Everybody else is sick, injured, busy or not responding. We need ALL PLAYERS in 18U, 15U and 13U to show up at 8 am and earn that money for the upcoming leagues and pay back for leagues and tournaments in the past year. We'll be done by 3:00 pm. 18U, if you want a team in the OpenCourt League, you've got to show up and work.

WE LUB THIS GAME!

H1 Thunder 42, Sharks II 40 (Int)

What a victory. We suited up just five of our 13 guys on the Int. roster. We were pulling away in the second half, up 10 or 12, when fouls became an issue. Kapaa fouled out. Then Jared fouled out.

We finished the last 3-4 minutes with three players. The Sharks caught up and tied the game, but Ryan and Micah hit clutch free throws. Then, with the game tied in the final seconds, Micah broke past a double-team at halfcourt and scored on a tough drive in traffic against two tall defenders. His shot hit the rim, bounced high and swished through with :06 left.

We gave out a couple of fouls after that since we only had 4 team fouls. The Sharks still got a pretty good look at the end, but Micah altered the shooter's 3-point shot from the wing and he missed as time ran out.

Talk about a miracle win. That's the first time we've had to finish a game with just 3 guys. I don't think anybody in the gym thought we had a chance in those last minutes. I'm proud of our Thunder (again)!

Everybody played strong, especially Walter, who scored a bunch of points in the second half on 3-pointers and fastbreak layups.

Today's lineup: Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria, Jared Elwin, Walter Berthold and Kapaa Nishimura.

Next: Sunday, 8:00 am, Car Wash. We'll be done at 3:00 pm. EVERY PLAYER SHOULD BE THERE!

Car Wash: Head Count

Howzit everybody! I need a head count for Sunday's Car Wash. I know it's last minute, but the opportunity is there for us to work and pay for the upcoming leagues/uniforms/etc. There's no other Car Wash open date until March.

So many parents have told me that they have other plans on Sunday. Some folks are sick. Some have family obligations. But whoever can make it, please let me know. I texted a bunch of our parents today and only a few said they are going to miss the fundraiser. It wasn't until after I paid the $400 fee that many more parents said they aren't coming.

If you are coming to work at the Car Wash, please let me know and if possible bring a few friends. We need all players there if possible, 13U, 15U and 18U. If 18U doesn't fundraise/work the Car Wash, we will probably not have an 18U team in the OBL. It's important that the players work at the Car Wash. This is for them.

Mahalo,
Paul

Car wash on Sunday

*** CAR WASH SUNDAY (tentative) ***
Confirmed that we have no games this Sunday (Feb. 9), so the day is open. McCully Union Station also has an open date, so I'm asking everybody if they can make it for a car wash on Sunday from 8 am (setup) to 3 pm (closing). Our 13U/Intermediate team is going to play in the upcoming PAA 15U League ($500), plus OpenCourt Basketball League 13U ($500) and 15U ($500), and we may also play in 18U ($500). So we need to make some cash soon. PAA 15U starts on Feb. 19 and OBL starts at the end of February.

Weather forecast for Sunday is better than it's been for any weekend day in months.

Once I pay the $400 fee this afternoon, ALL 18U, 15U AND 13U PLAYERS must participate in the car wash. No money, no league. Make money, have fun! WE LUB THIS GAME!

Condolences to the Higashionna ohana

Ryan's grandpa had been sick for some time and passed away a few days ago. Our prayers are with Nathan, Arlene and the family. They spent so much time with Ryan's grandpa. There is a lot of love in that family. They've gone through a lot in the past year, three family members passing away.

Through it all, they stick together and keep working, going to school, getting to practice, showing up to every game. Making the daily commute from Ewa to town. Smiling and enjoying each day. We love you guys! God bless.

Sharks 53, H1 Thunder 40 (13U)

PAA 13U, Kilauea gym
A lot of heart and guts tonight by our Thunder. We had only 4 players, but the league commissioner led his son Bailey play with us (double roster) to help us out and avoid a forfeit. Our guys played strong and even though we were way smaller, we made up for it with steals and speed.

We were down just 27-23 at halftime, and we cut the lead to 2 points 1 point (27-26) early in the second half. (Josh caught fire from 3-point range.) But the Sharks kept platooning 5 in and 5 out. Every time they brought in their second five, we went on a scoring binge. They brought in their starting five, and we fell further behind.

All in all, our five guys played with heart and that's the ultimate reward for us coaches. I could say that if we had our regular lineup, we would've won this game. But I can't. Every team has the opportunity to show up or not, and the Sharks showed up. Only four of our 10 guys did. I'm thankful that we had these four plus Bailey.

Tonight's lineup: Ryan Higashionna, Javan Montiho, Jared Elwin, Joshua de Jesus, Bailey Lee*.

Josh Roberts was sick (stomach flu). Kapaa Nishimura was at his brother's JV championship game. Chris Afe had football practice earlier, but didn't make it to the game. Micah Visoria was at his brother's playoff game. Walter Berthold, not sure where he was. Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain got hurt earlier today at Kalakaua practice.

Big Mahalo to Coach Roy for picking up the guys while I was at work.

Next: Saturday, 10:10 am, Thunder vs. Sharks I (Aiea Intermediate Division). Warmups 9:10 am. Pickups start 8:00 am. Let's have our FULL team and play some Thunder basketball. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Thursday pickup route

Please call or text Coach Roy 284-1643 early so he knows who needs a ride. My assignment tonight has changed. I'll be at Kalani for a 5:00 pm Division II girls state tournament game. So I could drop off guys before 4:15. Let me know if you need a ride and don't mind going early (551-1054). (Game is 7:00 pm.) I'm hoping I see you guys sometime in the second half at Kilauea gym. If not, no problem. You guys did great with Coach Roy last week. WE LUB THIS GAME!!

H1 Thunder 58, Kailua Lakers 25 (13U)

PAA 13U, Kilauea gym
Solid defensive effort all game long by our hungry Thunder. That was important since our outside shot was not dropping. Not a surprise since we haven't had many practices lately, and only two guys came to shooting practice on (Super Bowl) Sunday.

Pretty good passing, but not as good as we've had in other games. Need to keep the ball movement quick and busy instead of settling for tougher shots. We need to make the defensemove, chase us out to the 3-point line. Do that consistently, we get easy passes for easy layups and easy 3-pointers.

We pulled back the fullcourt press at halftime while we were up 36-8 or something like that. It was a great opportunity to work on a lot of halfcourt offensive plays, defensive details and sets. The lack of practice time shows, but we got by with great defense and pure hustle.

Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Walter Berthold, Josh Roberts, Chris Afe, Kapaa Nishimura, Ryan Higashionna, Joshua de Jesus, Jared Elwin.

Next: Thursday, 7:00 pm, H1 Thunder vs. Sharks I, Kilauea gym. Warmups 6:00 pm. Please get in touch with Coach Roy for a ride. I have to work at Kalaheo, which means I leave town at 4:30 to beat traffic. Go play a smart, fast game, Thunder. I want to hear great news. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Isaiah, Govs on TV tonight

Isaiah and the Farrington Governors playing on TV tonight against Kahuku. Halftime, Govs lead 24-22. Isaiah just drove and had a sweet pass to Mason Semisi for a layup at the buzzer. Channel 1012.

Thunder 52, Asing Park Heat 45 (Int)

Aiea League, Intermediate Division
Tough battle with the Heat. We played them just two weeks ago and won decisively. This time, they played tough man defense on us and made us work hard for the win. We trailed until the second half when Kali‘a hit a post basket on a pass from Kapaa to take a 39-37 lead.

We were low in numbers again with all the other stuff (school league games, football) going on, but Josh played through his cold and Walter made it to give us a valuable reserve off the bench. Third game in three days, with hardly any subbing due to low numbers. It was a grind and a mental challenge for our guys. They showed a lot of toughness and heart.

Good work, Thunder!

Today's lineup: Kali'a Mielke, Hsien Pascua, Kapaa Nishimura ,Joshua de Jesus, Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna, Walter Berthold.

Next: Sunday, 11:00 am, shooting practice at McCully gym. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Boxscore added 2/2/14
Sometimes, statistics don't measure the game right. The ebbs and flows, the momentum changes, the changes in defensive or offensive strategy. But sometimes, the numbers say so much. In this game, we took 26 free throws, made 19 (73 percent), and it was plentiful from the start. Asing Park played halfcourt man defense all game long and our guys are finally getting used to attacking the defense, getting to the rim more often and with more ease.

Kapaa was incredible. He made his last 10 free-throw attempts, all in the second half, and finished with 26 points (on just 14 shot attempts), 10 rebounds and five assists. Kali‘a was steady and smart with 10 points, Ryan hustled for five rebounds, and Josh got five steals even though he's still sick. Hsien was very effective against the man defense, driving hard for 10 points. Javan had only one bucket, but it was a big 3 late in the game as we pulled away.
