Video: Thunder 13U vs Laie

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Wednesday funday

Good workout today at Makiki Park. We did our drills thoroughly, and some guys are clearly getting better and faster, especially on the fullcourt layup times. Then we scrimmaged 4-on-4 fullcourt. The team of Kyle Moraga, Ryan Higashionna, Joshua de Jesus and Coach Rob beat the team of Kali'a Mielke, Jared Elwin, Hsien Pascua and Coach Paul 45-32.

Thought about having practice on Thursday, but I'm working (D-II girls volleyball state semifinals). That means no practice until Sunday. Keep working every day, Thunder! 200+ shots daily.

Next: Sunday, 11:00 am, practice, McCully gym. WE LUB THIS GAAAAME!!

Reps lead to efficiency and excellence

Always liked Steph Curry's game. Smart. Quick. Fundamentals. Deadly accurate shot. Then I drafted him for my fantasy team the other day and decided to read more about him. CLICK HERE.

A lot of videos there on his highlights of the 2012-13 season. Like this one.

That led to this link. If you like and appreciate math, you'll see why some statistics gurus are hoping Curry shoots more 3-point shots this year. It makes too much sense.

Stephen Curry's Numbers Are As Unlikely And Wonderful As Stephen Curry

Think about it. If you shoot 33.3% from 3-point range and take 9 shots, you will make three. Three treys = 9 points. 33.3% is basic normality. If you shoot better than that from the arc, you're above average.

If you take 9 shots inside the 3-point stripe, you'd have to make at least 5 (55.6%) to score at least nine points. (It would be 10 points, of course.) If you made only 4 baskets (44.4%), that would be 8 points. In other words, a good shooting 3-point shooter could dominate anybody else who has average shooting accuracy in the key.

A smaller, but great shooting guy can outscore a big dude who dunks, but misses a lot of layups. There were times when our 17U last spring looked like a team of Steph Currys. They moved the ball. Drove and kicked to open teammates the 3-point arc. It was electrifying when they ran the break, hit threes and pressed other teams into turnovers, which led to more great passes and threes and layups.

It was more than excitement. It was sheer, pure efficiency. It was smart basketball.

200+ shots a day. Make it so!

Monday funday

Solid workout today at Makiki Park. We were 3 strong: Kali'a Mielke, Ryan Higashionna and Jared Elwin. We missed the rest of the guys, but having just 3 means more reps and more shots and more footwork drills. All good!

After drills, we went 2 on 2. Jared/Kali‘a beat Ryan/Coach Paul 21-19, then Ryan/Coach Paul beat Jared/Kali‘a 21-17. Good job, boys!

Next: Wednesday, 5:00 pm, practice at Makiki Park. WE LUB THIS GAAAME!!

Wherefore art thou, Mo?

In case you wonder whatever happened to big Mo . . . Looks like he's doing great back in Germany for his club team, Phoenix Hagen. When he played for the Thunder 17U a couple of years ago, he had the freedom to roam and shoot a 3 now and then. I wonder if he's doing that now.

His last game with the Thunder, almost all our 17U guys were busy, some playing football that fall. He suited up with a bunch of our young guards and we won a game in the last minute by one point at Palolo gym. Great memories.

Then he went back to Germany for his senior year of high school. Seeing him elevate to higher and higher levels in Europe is awesome.

Here's their team website: click on this link. He's playing in the Pro league in Germany and looks like, by far, the youngest player on the team.

Sunday funday

Good shooting workout today with Kali'a Mielke, Joshua de JesusKyle Moraga and Felcris Jay Corpuz. It was sweltering hot today, but the boys did good work. A lot of shooting, wing and low-post footwork. The guys get better day by day and it's awesome to see.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm, Makiki Park. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Uniform specifications

Sizing it up - Need everybody's jersey and shorts sizes. We don't play league until January (CAL middle-school league) and February (PAA 15U/13U), so some guys might grow over the winter. But I need uniform specs, including the number you want. Seniority is the tiebreaker for numbers that are requested by more than one player.

I'm looking at ordering at least two new uniform sets, maybe more depending on our car washes and travel plans.

> Name, jersey size, shorts size, jersey #

Saturday practice?

Saturday, 2:00 pm - Practice. Who needs a ride? Coach Roy might be busy today and I have to be at St. Francis HS before 1:30 pm to cover a volleyball tournament (benefit for cancer awareness). I can drop guys off at Makiki Park early and come back later, so text or call me 551-1054 if you're going.

I'm going to check with Coach Roy and Coach Rob, might cancel today if we don't have enough guys. We have practice tomorrow morning, too.

Wednesday funday

Good workout today at Makiki Park. 5 strong: Joshua de Jesus, Kali'a Mielke, Ryan Higashionna, Kyle Moraga and Hsien Pascua. Got some ballhandling and defensive work in, though not quite enough. There are good habits to keep repeating and bad habits we need to eliminate, and that comes with practice and repetition. Then we scrimmaged 3-on-3. Kyle, Kali‘a and Ryan against Hsien, Josh and Coach Paul. Kyle's team led something like 26-12 before Josh's team made a run. It was 32-29 with less than a minute left, but Kyle free throws to ice it. Final was 36-31 (something like that).

Ryan was the leading scorer for his team, running backdoor for passes from Kali‘a and Kyle. Hsien was the top scorer for his team.

Next: Saturday, 2:00 pm, practice, Makiki Park. Hopefully, we have enough for 4-on-4 or 5-on-5 fullcourt. Then Sunday, 11:00 am, McCully gym. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Car washes in December

* * * Get your car wash groove on, everybody. We've got 3 in December.

> Saturday, Dec. 7
> Saturday, Dec. 14
> Saturday, Dec. 21

All car washes at McCully Union Station, 9 am to 3 pm. Get there 1 hour early and then wash them chariots. Call me 551-1054 or Coach Roy 284-1643 for rides.

We've got leagues, tournaments, new uniforms and maybe some traveling to pay for, past and future, so we'll keep washing cars (and playing basketball!) consistently year-round.

Team ball rules

Team ball does it all. The boys in Indiana always known this. Same with our Thunder.

Scroll down the middle section about the Terre Haute Jammers. This sounds familiar.

Brad Miley, who played forward at Indiana State with Bird, had started the Jammers a few years before. "It was primarily for my kids," he says, and the program drew its players from the 20 or so miles around Terre Haute. The team didn't enjoy a Nike or Adidas sponsorship -- unlike some other AAU teams, they didn't travel extensively or wear slick warm-up suits. Indeed, for most of the roster the notion of "jamming" was itself aspirational. "We had no Division I scholarships on our team," says Lucas Eitel, another ex-Jammer who walked on at Indiana State and is now a key shooter off the bench.

Still, the Jammers went on a stunning two-year run, regularly beating teams that boasted eight or nine future D-I players -- guys like Garrick Sherman (Michigan State), Evan Gordon (Arizona State), and DeShaun Thomas (Ohio State). "We played ‘Indiana-style basketball,'" Odum says (and those are his scare quotes). Most AAU teams play a fast-and-loose style that makes even NBA offenses seem elegant and unselfish. But the Jammers opted for a more structured, team-based approach, passing the ball, cutting constantly, chirping on defense.
It worked. "I don't think most of our opponents knew what hit them," Miley says. The Jammers' motives were never entirely pure. "If we play individually we don't beat them," Odum explains. "And then we're definitely not getting any looks from college coaches."

In 2008, Miley decided to take his team on the road. The Jammers scraped together enough cash to attend the Nike Main Event, a sprawling, four-division tournament in Las Vegas. To save money, the Jammers flew in on a brutal red-eye out of Indianapolis and played their first game that same day. "You could tell they were tired," Miley says, and the Jammers lost to a team from Oregon. Then they won their next eight straight, beating Dallas Showtyme and capturing the Gold Division title.

Monday funday

Had a superb workout yesterday afternoon at Makiki Park. You guys are forcing me to run the court and sweat in my old age and flabbiness. I might get skinny again one day.

We had a good turnout of 6 strong: Javan Montiho, Kali'a MielkeJared Elwin, Kyle Moraga, Joshua de Jesus and Kapaa Nishimura. Coach Rob and I joined in for our scrimmage. We got some work done, not as much as I'd like, but there's only so much we can do in one hour.

Scrimmage: Going 4-on-4 fullcourt man defense gives us a lot of teachable moments. There's no place to hide when a defender doesn't play smart. So we keep running, scrimmaging and learning from our mistakes every time we hit the court. That's one of the beautiful things about competition: there are times when us coaches have to speak up, and there's times when nothing needs to be said.

Defense teaches responsibility. It's work, but it's also about heart, and we got lots of that!

The team of Kali‘a, Javan, Kapaa and Coach Paul edged the team of Jared, Kyle, Josh and Coach Rob 35-34 (something like that). Good work. Fun work.

Next: Wednesday, 5:00 pm, practice at Makiki Park. Everybody - 13U, 15U, 17U, Thunder alumni, Thunder dads, Thunder brothers - is welcome to compete. We need that.

Solid workout today with Javan Montiho, Kali'a Mielke and Kyle Moraga. We keep working on fundamentals. Today is was a focus on shooting, low-post footwork and floaters. Keep up the excellent work every day, Thunder. 200+ shots a day, after one month, you're 6,000 shots ahead of most other players.

Video: Thunder 17U vs Kailua

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

A good battle with a tall team from Kailua. A big third quarter, fueled by our fullcourt press, was a big factor. Fun game to watch.

If you notice a lot of fouls being called, that's because this was part of the OIA referee training, hosted by CAL League. In other words, this is how most high school games are called. I don't care much how referees call a game, as long as they are consistent and fair. Never expect perfection from them. It's a tough job.

When referees allow plenty of physical play, we learn to adjust. That's been one of the best things we've done in the past year. A good team has to be ready to adjust to the officiating. On the mainland, most of the referees allowed a lot of contact, stuff that was sometimes blatant fouls normally. But we were ready.

What now?

Well, I kind of like taking a deep breath and exhaling. There are no games scheduled, though hopefully we get some games against ILH JV and/or middle-school teams.

I was told by an OIA varsity coach that league/DOE rules prohibit allowing players/teams with kids who are eighth grade and younger from playing on a high school campus. I didn't know this rule, but it makes sense. They don't want to get sued by a non-high school athlete who gets injured, bottom line. Sad, but true.

But there's hope. I'm going to keep searching around for tournaments that may need a fill-in team. You never know.

And we'll be (finally) back on the pavement to wash cars starting in December. There's a lot of washing to be done, but we seem to get the job done quite well while having a lot of fun every time.

I love you guys. Keep up the good effort in the classroom and on the court.

NEXT: Practice, Sunday, 11:00 am, McCully gym. WE LUB THIS GAAAAME!!

17U: H1 Thunder 55, Kailua 43

Mahalo to Coach Roy and Coach Rob for picking up the guys and doing good work on Friday. I expected just 6 players, but we ended up with 8. Having some of our 13U guys step up was key. I watched the video late last night and had fun seeing a team that played like an older team.

Isaiah played strong, as usual, and Haka made it to the game. (I forgot that his football game isn't until Saturday.) Isaiah drew fouls all game long, which is interesting because it was CAL League's referee training night. That means there was a three-man crew on the court at all times, and Isaiah was shooting bonus free throws early in the second quarter. The officials did a pretty stellar job all game long.

Haka hit some early 3-point bombs to help us open a double-digit lead and we never let it go. It's also satisfying to see our younger guys play solid basketball. Friday's lineup: Isaiah, Haka, Kyle, Joshua, Kali‘a, Kapaa, Hsien and Cody.

That closes the fall season. It was a lot of fun, more than I expected for our 17U. Job well done!

Wednesday funday

Good workout today at Makiki Park. Today's crew: Kali'a Mielke, Ryan Higashionna, Kapaa Nishimura, Kyle Moraga, Hsien Pascua,Joshua de Jesus. Got some drills in, then scrimmaged the final 20 minutes. The team of Kali‘a, Ryan, Kapaa and Coach Rob beat the team of Kyle, Hsien, Josh and Coach Paul 35-31 (something like that). It's always good — and important — for us to scrimmage. As long as we have enough guys, we'll do it.

Daily work is good for the soul. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Next: Thunder 17U vs. Rising Stars, Friday, 7:10 pm, Kilauea gym. I have to work that night, so be sure to contact Coach Roy 284-1643 or Coach Rob Mielke for a ride.

Monday funday

9 strong today at Makiki Park for practice. We got some drills done, then scrimmaged 5-on-5 (Coach Rob and I split one spot as the 10th man) for 20 minutes. Good, solid workout. Today's lineup: Javan Montiho, Ryan Higashionna, Kapaa Nishimura, Kali'a Mielke, Kyle Moraga, Joshua de Jesus, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Walter Berthold, Jared Elwin.

The scrimmage ended after one overtime with the score tied at 24. Good work, Thunder!

PAA League message

From Lloyd Lee of the Positive Attitude Always (PAA) League, a season-ending message.

Aloha,

We want to give a big MAHALO to all of you that participated in PA'A this season. Gerald and I really appreciate all of your input and feedback so that we may also improve our league for future seasons. We have always wanted to make this league a positive and learning experience for the kids so that they may grow, play through challenges, and mature from game to game. We both have been fortunate to see many kids play basketball through the years from PAL to the Varsity levels and enjoy seeing their hard work, dedication and passion of this sport. This makes it all worth it.

We hope that you've enjoyed and grew from it too. I know that Gerald and I have as we continue to learn from our experiences.

Thank God everybody got the message about the time change. We were 7 strong this morning and played one of our better games. Great transition, ball movement, aggressiveness and unselfishness with the perfect balance. A lot of good work on fullcourt defense. Today's lineup: Isaiah Visoria, Jerry Betiru, Cody Ogoso, John Chow, Iamhaka Johnson, Sisifo Lauvao, Kyle Moraga.

That ends the CAL season, but don't forget there's an exhibition game on Friday. It's a referee training night hosted by CAL. We play 7:10 pm, Kilauea gym against Rising Stars.

Saturday funday

Solid workout in the afternoon with Kapaa Nishimura, Joshua de Jesus, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Hsien Pascua, Walter Berthold. Ballhandling, on-ball defense, jab step, all the basics we could squeeze into about an hour. Job well done, gentlemen!

Wednesday funday

(Posted this on our Facebook page a few days ago. Forgot to post it here until now.)

The passing rains held up just enough for us to have a solid practice. Ballhandling, on-ball defense, fullcourt layup drills, 4-on-4, halfcourt offense work. The guys who were able to stay after practice played 5-on-5 pickup games with the older guys. Three epic games. The old guys barely won the best-of-3 third game 13-12. Some of them told me they couldn't believe the Thunder were all 13-and-under. Sometimes I watch and I can't believe it, too.

Good work today by Kali'a Mielke, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Ryan Higashionna, Jared Elwin, Kapaa Nishimura, Hsien Pascua, Kyle Moraga and Dwayne Perez.

Next: Saturday, 2:00 pm, practice, Makiki Park. Then 17U plays Sunday 11:10 am at Kilauea gym.

Sunday game time changed to 9:30 am

GET THE WORD OUT! Sunday's 17U game is 9:30 am, not 11:10 am. CAL League had to change the schedule to accommodate some other teams. I didn't see the change until just now (via e-mail).

Repeat: Sunday's 17U game is 9:30 am at Kilauea gym. Please be there an hour early to stretch and warm up. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Call me 551-1054 or Coach Roy 284-1643 for ride.

Note: I couldn't get ahold of everybody when I discovered this change late last night. I lost a bunch of cell numbers when my old phone died. Hopefully everyone gets the message this morning.

Car wash: your input?

Talked with the manager at McCully Union Station. The next available car wash dates aren't until December. Here's what they have open on weekends. I don't want to put down a $325 deposit until I get consensus from all our parents and players.

Saturdays: Dec. 7, 14, 21, 28.
Sundays: Dec. 1, 22, 29.

There is nothing open in November. I mentioned to some of our parents that I've seen the station open with no car wash on some Sundays in the past two months, when the dates had been reserved. The manager told me today that other people had reserved and paid deposits, but didn't show up.

Let me know which dates work best and we'll go full bore with fundraising. Also, I'd like to sell our H1 Thunder T-shirts, so let me know what sizes you would like to order/sell to friends, family, co-workers. Not a bad Christmas present, I say!

Monday funday

Excellent workout today at Makiki Park with some old faces and new. Some basics: ballhandling, conditioning, shooting and scrimmage (4-on-4). Today's crew: Kapaa Nishimura, Ryan Higashionna, Kyle Moraga, Javan Montiho, Kali'a Mielke, Chris Afeand Tanielu Mosi Afe.

There's an old saying: Character is what you do when nobody's watching. Kapaa has no games to play, but comes to every practice possible. Javan has football on Sundays (game days), but he makes it to practice when he can. Chris and Tani are busy on Saturdays (football) and can't come on Sundays (usually), but they wanted to practice since their teams have byes this week.

I'm looking forward to (hopefully) having some exhibition games for us to play in the next month or two, and maybe an off-island tournament, and then CAL and PAA in January. We had fun working hard today.

Note: We did our fullcourt layup drill and Tanielu Mosi Afe broke the record held by Hsien Pascua (4.77). Tani did times of 4.72, 4.68 and 4.56.

Next: Wednesday, 5:00 pm, practice at Makiki Park. 17U are always welcome.

13U: Sharks 45, H1 Thunder 39

We led for about 3 quarters against a tall, quick team. Their press gave us layup opportunities, but at times we weren't patient and turned the ball over. That's something that comes with experience and mistakes. Hopefully, we keep learning. But we were shorthanded, especially on the boards. Jared Elwin would've helped a lot, but's out until the stitches over his right eye heal.Kyle Moraga and Kali'a Mielke were warriors under the basket, great job boxing out against the tall guys. Good battle. I'm not happy about a loss, but I'm stoked about the effort and heart. When the needle hits empty, you know the guys have done their best. Today's lineup: Joshua de Jesus, Hsien Pascua, Walter Berthold, Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria, Kyle and Kali‘a.

Josh hit big 3s for us today. His shot is back, officially. Hsien continues to learn on the job, excellent defense and a great attitude about learning. Micah also hit a couple of big 3s against a tall man-to-man defense. I wish we'd freed him up a few more times for open looks. (V-Ray anybody?) Walter gave us some good minutes off the bench and handled their three-quarter (2-2-1) press pretty good while he was in. Ryan had good moments but also will have to learn to use his fake more and be willing to be aggressive when he gets taller guys in the air. That will come with time. He's 11.

Kyle and Kali‘a banged under the boards and boxed out very, very well. They just didn't have much help since we had a small lineup today. They played with heart and set the tone for our guys. We still have much to learn from, much to grow into, like playing with composure under pressure. That's why we keep playing. We learn more from the errors. That is the hope.

That completes our 13U season in the Compete & Learn League. We went 5-3 with a very young lineup on most days. This team played without Tanielu and Chris most times (football/rest days), and Manoa was too old to be eligible. And no Kapaa. Javan was busy with football, leaving us with one less fullcourt defender/3-point shooter. But our guys, almost all guards, held down the fort quite well. We're only going to get better.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm, Practice, Makiki Park. 200+ a day. WE LUB THIS GAME!

17U: H1 Thunder 50, Hoops4Christ 36

Great job passing and moving the ball against H4C's zone. We got a lot of tips and layups. We still look a little rusty at times, but we have a great effort. Kyle Moraga and Kali'a Mielke sat the final quarter. Saved their legs for the 13U game. Today's lineup: Sisifo Lauvao, Isaiah Visoria, Brent Quackenbush, Iamhaka Johnson, Jerry Betiru, Cody Ogoso, Kyle and Kali‘a.

Isaiah rebounded, defended, rebounded again over and over, and his mid-range J was on. High post offense. Jerry hit three treys in a row at one point. Brent - I hadn't seen him play in a long time. He's still growing, still springy, long arms and aggressive to the basket. Haka's defense and transition offense are still excellent. He's a little rusty, but coming back strong from the foot injury. Sifo's versatility was a plus again, low post, wing, willing to go anywhere. Cody ran the break well and stretched the other team's defense with his range. Kyle and Kali‘a were solid in limited minutes.

Thunder 17U: Game tonight! (Friday)

HEADS UP!
Thunder 17U has a game tonight (Friday), 8:00 pm against Rising Stars. This was an addition/change to the new schedule that I didn't see last week. (This game was supposed to be last week and the league switched it.)

So be at Kilauea by 7:00 pm. Coach Larry and Coach Roy will be in charge. I have to be at the stadium for work. Go Thunderrr! If you need a ride, call Coach Roy (284-1643).

Wednesday funday

Solid workout today, 6 strong plus Dwayne. Today's crew: Kali'a Mielke, Kyle Moraga, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Ryan Higashionna, Hsien Pascua, Felcris Ahadain, Joshua de Jesus (Josh). Ran some laps, did some UCLA play drills, then spent the next hour scrimmaging 3-on-3. Kyle, Ryan and Josh beat Kali‘a, Hsien and Felcris 34-22 (halfcourt, 10-minute halves). Then Kali‘a, Hsien and Ryan edged Kyle, Felcris and Josh 34-33.

The 3-on-3 with an emphasis on UCLA passes and cuts helped build better timing.

Post-practice: 100 3-point shots each for Hsien, Felcris, Kyle. Good work, Thunder!

Next:
Saturday, 2:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Sunday, 1:00 pm - Thunder 17U vs. Hoops4Christ, Kilauea gym. Warmups 12 pm, Kilauea gym outside court.

Forgot to post this earlier. This is from Monday.

Monday funday
Excellent workout this afternoon at Makiki Park. Perfect weather: hardly any wind, partly cloudy, dry court. Kali'a Mielke, Jared Elwin and Kapaa Nishimura got lots of basic shooting work in, plus post footwork, 3-point shooting. It's all about volume and reps when we have a small turnout, and it is always a plus for the guys to get those 200+ shots in. Building to success, one shot, one workout, one day at a time. I lub to see it!
