It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

Super mahalo to Uncle Michael Knight for filiming this game. We were 9 strong and showed some improvement with our fastbreak and execution. Above all, great team defense again. Avari especially shot the ball well today.
Miki injured her pinky finger earlier in the week and didn't play. TJ couldn't make it to the game.
Practice Monday and Tuesday. Possibly Thursday. Then the Jam On It Hawaiian District Championships next weekend in 4th and 6th grade divisions.

Mr. Michael Knight filmed the game today. Mahalo, Mr. Knight! HHA's zone defense gave us opportunities and we didn't shoot well enough. Also missed some open teammates on cuts. Sometimes a loss gives us a good plate of areas to work on and this is one of them.
We were down 8 and rallied. Ebomb's 3 tied the game at 22. But we had a lot of missed opportunities from beginning to end, many times rushing shots.
Things to work on at practice:
> Patience, pivoting, pump fakes in the paint.
> Finishing 1-on-1 on fastrbreaks -- at the rim.
> Executing zone offense. We never passed to a cutter.
> Minty defense. It was good most of the second half, but wasn't good enough in the final e minutes.
HHA shot the ball well, passed well. It's their home gym, to be expected. I had a good talk with Coach Marco after the game about officiating. His partner today was a first-time referee, unlike the excellent one we had last week. Reffing didn't cost us this game, but I believe in sharing my input when there is such a huge difference in the span of one week. There were at least 5 travels that weren't called on HHA.
I don't think it was intentional. But not everyone sees violations, and yet they are on the court reffing. Hopefully, Jill and Coach Marco of HHA can resolve this.

Super mahalo to our award-winning cinematographer, Michael Knight, for filming this game. I had to get to work, so Coach Jesse and Coach Tom stepped up in this battle. Auntie Selene mentioned later it was a physical game. Coach Jesse said we made some key free throws down the stretch. Good job, Thunder Pups!
Mahalo for the photo, Coach Tom!

Big mahalo to the Agbayani Ohana for filming this game. Man Up is a mix of players, very skilled and athletic, including one from Hilo. They're playing in a tournament at Kalaheo HS next weekend so this was basically a tune-up game for them.
On our side, Noel battled their big guys, a couple of 6-2 kids, tooth and nail. Kona was our point center and primary ball handler. With this roster missing numerous practices as a first-time team, we saw some improvement, but at this rate it hasn't translated on the court. The daily commitment as a team has not matched the talk.
It's been good to see Zachary become much more aggressive. I'm hoping this team keeps practicing even after Kona's family moves to Maui. But I'm not going to enter this group into any more leagues until we see real commitment across the board. CAL 8th Grade summer league starts soon (May). We should keep improving in the Silver Division with the dedicated 8th Graders and the 6th and 5th Graders helping out. But I need to see real commitment from the 8th graders, working out and getting reps not just at team practice, but on their own time every day. We need that from them just to be competitive.

Special mahalo to Uncle HM Murdock for filming this rematch battle against Kalakaua. Storm forfeited the 4th Grade game so Kalakaua filled in.
Bomboocha mahalo to Leila for filming the 6th Grade game. It is her first time ever filming a game. Great job, future film director 🎬
Our defense and depth made a big difference. Kalakaua has improved a lot and made this a close game most of the way. We missed several layups, usually from rushing or taking off from LeBron distance.
Good job by our tough Thunder Pups. They love to play great defense together, and it is quite infectious. Haden, Caleb. Eisley, Ebomb did good work in the paint. Avari probably had 7-8 deflections in the two games. Crazy good spider arms everywhere.
In the second game, our 6th Grade Pups played with grit, especially the ones who had just played in the 4th Grade game. We trailed by 8 or 10 points, then rallied with smart defense. Kudos to our Pups corn locking down on HHA's gunners and their big man. Kye was a defensive force in the paint against a guy who is 1 foot and 80 pounds bigger.
It not easy to explain how a small team of mostly 4th and 5th graders can compete and beat a talented, skilled and older foe. EZ sparked the rally with a string of points, and our aggressive defenders like Emic, Miki, Eisley, and the rest of the crew were amazing. DJ is orobably the best point center in the league. He loves his teammates and prefers to give the ball up on the fastbreak or settle for a 12-footer, which is why we missed out on 10 to 15 points. He is on the cusp of breaking out into a new level.
It's always uplifting to see Pups so young embrace and support each other like our guys do.

Monday funday 4/15/19
We broke down our transition offense to the nuts and bolts, then built it back up one part at a time. Every position. It will take some time for us to master the numbers, but we will get there.
We had some guys jogging during sprints. Talking when they needed to listen.
There was a time last year when I let the team scrimmage for 1-2 hours, tournament style. Everyone was happy. But in real games, we were terrible.
We will stick with fundamentals and conditioning, tedious and painful as it may be for some keiki. Scrimmage time, like playing time, has to be earned. All that sloppy park ball we had in those last 14 minutes today will be corrected.
Let's see who can run the numbers fastbreak tomorrow. #h1thunder #teamwork #repetition #confidence

Loyalty is Love
I watched a documentary about DeMarcus Cousins, and one of the profound chapters of his life was his youth basketball program. His coach took him in like family, especially with DeMarcus being the son of a single mom. Fundamentals and principles, day after day, on and off the court. When he built a basketball facility for his coach and the neighborhood, at center court is their motto: LOYALTY IS LOVE.
Poor community. Rich in love. That's what ripples into the hearts of so many teams across the country, around the world. We aren't the richest, but we have devotion and teamwork. We have trust and toughness, and underneath all of that is loyalty. It is priceless. I see this amazing, relentless love by our parents in our 4th, 5th and 6th Grade teams, the ones that have been practicing together for the past three years.
All of the keiki who have worn our Thunder uniforms since we began in 2010 have shown so much heart and dedication. We still "heart" all our teammates, even the ones who left. But parents who are loyal are not common at all, as we saw in the past few months. The ones who left — most of the former 8th Grade and JV parents — didn't accept a disciplined, structured system of work ethic, accountability and teamwork for their kids. A few of them wanted special treatment, demanding a starting role for a player who hadn't been to practice for ONE YEAR. One dad-coach (DS), who I trusted with all I had, even lied blatantly to me and some of our loyal families — telling me to my face that he was stepping away to do basketball clinics for his church (Assembly of God) — then secretly started his new team with his personal friends and convinced a few of our parents to abandon us, parents who rejected the work ethic and their teammates, and believed his lies.
Last fall, while I was going through back channels to ask the chief of a referee association (BY) and director of Ikaika League (CT, who refused to talk to me) to find out why the quality of officiating had slipped so badly, this dad-coach didn't have my back. The referee association's chief told me that he didn't like my e-mail, and decided to ban me from coaching in Ikaika League even though I didn't have any technical fouls, didn't do anything except ask questions. In fact, he said the only way he would rescind this would be if I wrote an apology in the newspaper — for a personal email. He also said the Ikaika League director was "making his referee association the scapegoat."
I stood up for our Thunder Ohana, and both the referee association and the league director refused to deal with the problem even though I was cordial and professional about it. So, our dad-coach used this situation to hurt us. Instead of having my back and standing strong, he went behind it and stabbed it. He used it to pursue his own agenda, had secret meetings and broke up friendships among our keiki that went back 2, even 3 years. Lying blatantly to start his own team. It's no wonder he calls his team "Lions (Lyins)". Those kids aren't liars, but he certainly is.
These are the facts. My emotions have leveled out since all this happened six months ago. God is good, and always will be. The parents who jumped ship were some of the same ones who let their kids play Fortnite instead of go to practice. Who consistently skipped practice even though I offered to give their keiki rides to practice and home afterward. Parents who don't understand that correcting their children's continual mistakes is a big part of coaching. Parents who forgot that discipline and fundamentals came from this Thunder Ohana, not the conniving, gossiping and lying adults who attempted to sabotage us. Parents who work hard, but shelter their kids in a marshmallow-cushioned universe. It's a society-wide problem.
And yet, we SURVIVED. And we are THRIVING. We have leagues like CAL and PAA that have the highest integrity, are open to discussion any time, and we respect them greatly after all these years. They are true professionals who expect the best from their referees, and we know they try their best. That's all we ask. We focus on our daily development. We have joy. Our keiki love this game. They love their teammates. They have immense support from their moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, aunties and uncles.
We aren't perfect, but we are truthful. It's the only way to really grow. So in the end, I'm grateful. I cherish our families who have stuck through and are the backbone of our Thunder Ohana to this day, from Coach Larry Visoria and Coach Bo Kekahuna, the original Thunder keiki like Cody Ogoso, and through the years with the Afe-Passion ohana and their sons Mosi and Chris (and DJ), right on through to the boys and girls who play their hearts out for their teammates today. The coaches like Coach Jesse, Coach Tom, Coach Eddie and Coach Darrick, all who give from the heart. Auntie Patti and all the friends who have supported us with their encouragement, supporting our fundraisers to help us make ends meet. Our friends, our parents, our keiki — their hearts are pure. They are a big reason why I never lost my joy despite temporary setbacks.
Loyalty is love, love, love. God is alive :)

Thunder trip to Kauai
Congratulations to our H1 Thunder 5th Grade Pups! They went 5-0, including two wins over 6th/5th Grade teams — DJ played in those two games — on Saturday and Sunday. Our parents were all amazing, generous, kind, supportive and rock solid!
Oscar-winning performance by Uncle Theodore "TC" Calvin behind the camera once again. Auntie Mareleee and family fed the Pups musubi between games. Uncle TC paid for snacks and Gatorade. Uncle Norlan washed all the uniforms after Saturday's games and also bought lots of ice, water and Gatorade.
Five games in two days. Our Pups grew a lot this weekend through the ups and downs. A lot of grit, a willingness to learn and get better. One of our best trips as a team on and off the court. Mahalo to a solid, supportive group of parents who worked together to keep this team fed, hydrated, loved and wearing freshly washed uniforms!
This group of Pups is tough, unselfish and fearless. I am so proud of them 🤙🏼⚡️🏀🙏
We finished the tournament 5-0, but the real victory is seeing the Pups grow and evolve, showing all the heart and maturity of teams much older. Thank you for making this one of my most enjoyable trips as a coach! #h1thunder #thunderohana #welovethisgame #h1thunderworldtour
