The pressured us with traps at midcourt, right in the middle, and we didn't execute against it until late in the first half. Tenchi did a nice job as the "hub" in the middle, getting some layups and dishing some passes for buckets. Overall, we had lots of opportunities. Kapolei left the back side open every time, but holding the ball too long got our smaller guards trapped by their tall defenders. We also did a very poor job of cutting after making that pass to the middle or wing.
It got better as the game went along, but by then we were already down 20-22 points. Kali‘a, Michael, Ryan and Tenchi played every minute since we only had 6 players tonight. They gutted it out and moved the ball fairly well. Once Ryan got used to that midcourt trap, he was in control and found Tenchi again and again as we broke down the only defense they showed us. (That included putting a man on Michael to deny him the ball.) Skylar was fearless and attacked the rim, hit a 3, did a nice job off the bench as an 8th grader going up against a bunch of seniors.
Nice job getting the lead down to 10 or 12 at one point in the second half.
Kapolei was on fire, hitting at least six or seven 3-pointers in the first half. They finished with around nine or 10 treys. The next time we play this team, hopefully we have a fuller roster. Some of our guys who couldn't make it today would've blown past those midcourt traps for layups and dimes. Today, we just needed move the ball quicker and smarter earlier in the game, and that will come with experience.
