New Year's Eve Funday

Twas the day before New Year's... and 6 Thunder decided to bring in the new year by working out at Makiki Park. Our younger 13U (PAA League) is mostly our newer players, so it's all about fundamentals and building team chemistry. In other words, layups and halfcourt execution, boxout drills and off-ball cuts (UCLA/Princeton) over and over.

We will probably be the smallest team in 13U, but we'll play with heart and teamwork. Our veterans will lead and encourage our new Thunder, as always.

Lineup: Trinity, Chaz, Micah, Jance, Jonah, Jhevin, Little Josh.

Next: Friday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
Saturday, 12:45 pm - Stretching/warmups at Palolo gym outside court. 1:45 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Court Kings (PAA 13U).
Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups, Aiea gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Aiea Blazers (13U).

PRACTICE CANCELLED. It's been too cloudy and rainy today. No chance for the wet court at Makiki Park to dry up in time for practice.

If you can find a gym with open play, go get your 200+ shots in. Get your workout in. Crunches. Pushups.

Next practice is on Wednesday, 5:00 pm, for the Thunder who aren't too busy on New Year's Eve. Weather permitting.

This Week (Dec 29-Jan 4)

Here's an update. Mahalo to the parents who caught the mistake I made on Saturday's plan. It's going to be January in a few days, which means PAA 13U League will begin. Time really snuck by me.

Monday - No practice
Tuesday, 4:00 pm - Practice.
Wednesday, 5:00 pm - Practice.
Thursday - No practice.
Friday, 5:00 pm - Practice.
Saturday, 12:45 pm - Stretching/warmups at Palolo gym outside court. 1:45 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Court Kings (PAA 13U).
Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups, Aiea gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Aiea Blazers (13U).

Please note that the birthdate cutoff for Aiea 13U League and PAA 13U League are different. To play in PAA 13U League, you must be 13 as of March 1 (when the league ends). For the guys who turn 14 before March 1 and can't play in PAA 13U League, we will still be in Aiea 13U League. That league's championship game is on Feb. 15.

Also, PAA will start its 15U Division during February. Their 17U will probably be just a tournament format, not a full league season, they said.

CAL League will begin Intermediate Division play on Jan. 10 with games on weekends. We will be quite busy soon enough. If we could squeeze in NJB (Intermediate Division), I'd consider that, too, but their schedule will conflict with the CAL schedule sometimes, and NJB — with the most erratic referees — charges more than the other leagues: $600.

H1 Thunder 46, Court Kings East 23

Note: Corrects Saturday's plan.

Aiea 13U League
Big team on the other side, but again, we play with a lot of heart, skill and togetherness. Offense, defense, our Thunder did the job.
OFFENSE
Shooting - Javan, Felcris and Ryan hit treys for us over their 1-2-2 zone. We made layups for the most part, and got clean looks most of the time. Shot selection is getting better, being patient for great looks instead of average/below-average looks. Grade: B+.
Passing - This was the key against that zone, using our Xbox play to hit the gaps inside and out. Colin and Ryan were great passers on the high post, great decisions. We had some unforced turnovers, but not too many. Grade: B+.
DEFENSE
On-ball pressure - We went at them all game long and it got us a lot of steals and layups in transition. We still hacked too much, and with one referee calling it tight, we had a few too many hand-check fouls. But overall, still very good. Our teamwork on the fullcourt and halfcourt presses were great at times. Grade: B+.
Challenging shooters - They got their share of open looks from 3-point range, but most of the time we challenged their shooters. Grade: B.
Rebounding - Much better today boxing out compared to last week, but still not consistent. It's a work in progress. We're showing more toughness under the basket. That's promising. Grade: C+.
Hustle: Little Josh had a great hustle play getting back on defense to prevent an easy layup. We did good work on hustle plays. Grade: A-.
OVERALL: B+.
GOOD JOB THUNDER!
Mahalo to Jason (Jance's dad) for shooting the game video. Mahalo to the parents and supporters (Mrs. Chang, Sanford) who stayed an extra hour to watch. I got the time wrong on our game, which started at 9:50 am instead of 9:00 am.
Lineup: Little Josh, Jayden, Jonah, Jance, Ryan, Colin, Felcris, Javan.
Next:
Monday - No practice
Tuesday, 4:00 pm - Practice.
Wednesday, 5:00 pm - Practice.
Thursday - No practice.
Friday, 5:00 pm - Practice.
Saturday, 12:45 pm - Stretching/warmups at Palolo gym outside court. 1:45 pm - H1 Thunder vs. Court Kings (PAA 13U).

Saturday Funday

Awesome workout at Makiki Park this afternoon. 8 Thunder strong, including Ryan, who had played 3 games earlier in the day with his Kaimuki Middle School team. We got some basic work done defensively, much to learn for the newer Thunder, but they'll learn day by day.

Also got work done with halfcourt offense. it was a solid 75 minutes of work, some running, not a lot, especially with a game tomorrow morning. But it was great to have that many guys, especially on a Saturday.

Lineup: Chaz, Micah, Ryan, Javan, Jance, Jhevin, Colin, Jayden.

Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups at Aiea gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Court Kings East (13U).

Friday funday, Sat practice 3 pm

We really need a lot of work and drills on rebounding and we got a great start at it today at Makiki Park. It won't turn around completely after just one workout, especially with more than half the team busy with school practices, tournaments, etc., but we had 6 Thunder today and they all worked hard on boxing out for a good 30-40 minutes.

We got a lot of drill work and reps done with halfcourt basics. Got some 3-on-3 in. We'll shoot a lot at Saturday's workout, which has been moved up from 5 p.m. to 3 p.m. so I can go cover the Saint Louis-China (Zhenjiang) game at 5. (I'll be working through the morning until about 2:30 pm.)

Lineup: Little Josh, Jance, Jhevin, Micah, Chaz, Javan.

Next: Saturday, 3:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups at Aiea gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Court Kings East (13U).
WE LUB THIS GAAAAME!!

Friday Practice

5:00 pm at Makiki Park. We'll go through basics and hammer down on rebounding drills. We got outrebounded 32-11 last weekend. Some of us got SOFT over the holidays, practicing with our school teams, etc. Let's get to work.

Need ride, call me (no text, my text is broken) 551-1054. Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Josh M DE Jesus.

Saturday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Wednesday Funday

Christmas Eve. Four Thunder at Makiki Park working hard and working together. A lot of us have a busy holiday season, but squeezing in those extra reps, working on the fundamentals that separate the best from the average... that's what we do.

It was a very good day
Lineup: Jance, Jonah, Jhevin, Little Josh.

Next: Friday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
Saturday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Traveling mercies

Walter and his family are in Chicago for Christmas. They're having a great time in the snow, taking in the sights and hanging with Grandma and Grandpa. Have a safe, fun time!

Chris Afe is boarding a plane on Christmas Day to fly to Seattle for an all-star football game. His dad, Drake, has been baking cake and bread this week to fundraise for the trip. I'm picking up my pan of bread this afternoon. I had it a few weeks ago and it was AWESOME.

Have a great time in Seattle, Chris. Hope the game is a lot of fun! That jersey looks beautiful.

Monday - Practice rained out

In case you were wondering. Town is raining again, windy, cold. I was hoping somehow the clouds would part and let a little sun dry up the court for practice, but it ain't happening.

Enjoy the day off. Get your 100 pushups and 100 crunches in, sets of 10 during your TV commercials.

No practice Tuesday. We'll practice Wednesday, God willing.

MAHALO MRS. CHANG!

Big thank you to Mrs. Patti Chang for the cool Christmas gifts she gave to all our H1 Thunder keiki at Sunday's game. The gifts will be well used. And devoured.

Birthdate cutoff for this league is March 1. Players must be age 13 as of that date. Anyone who turns 14 before March 1 is not eligible to play.

Sharks 58, H1 Thunder 46 (13U)

Sorry for the late post. Been crazy busy today, all week. Went to church and Costco after the game, been working since I got home around 3 pm. Fried brains. But I still remember this morning's game.

Playing "small ball" against a very tall team (three 6-footers) has worked for us before. Just needed to play a little bit smarter and pass a little bit better.

GOOD
>> Transition/fastbreak was solid, good push.

>> Ball movement was solid against their zone and man defenses.

>> Shot selection was OK. Not bad, not great. Against really tall teams and with no shot clock, it's always better to move the ball and get an open shot rather than take a shot with a hand in our faces.

>> Fullcourt and halfcourt pressure, when we used it, was very solid.

>> We had a 16-11 lead early even though we didn't box out consistently.

>> Shooting was fairly good until the final 8 minutes. It was 36-35 with 8 minutes left.

NOT SO GOOD
>> Again, too many bad decisions on fastbreak 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 situations. Passes too late. Passes forced. Not using fakes quite enough. Not getting easy points. That ended up hurting us.

>> The turnovers and misses on 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 breaks, the lack of box-outs on first, second, third shots by the Sharks all started to turn the game into their favor.

>> Last 8 minutes, we needed more ball movement and less quick shots. Even if we pass three or four times, that's just 10-15 seconds and a wide-open shot.

All in all, we played OK. It was a B or B- performance. The hustle was there, but the lack of box-outs was obvious. And the forced shots, hard shots late in the game showed that some of us are not playing as smart as we should be. This was a winnable game, so hopefully we LEARN and use the lessons to beat the Sharks in the playoffs.

We really, really need to practice together whenever possible. Our chemistry is off sometimes. Timing on passes and decision-making comes with playing together at practice.

Lineup: Little Josh, Chaz, Jayden, Jance, Ryan, Colin, Felcris, Micah, Javan.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Wednesday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Thursday - MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Friday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Saturday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups at Aiea gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Court Kings East (13U).

Holiday Hoopla

It's the middle of December (kind of) and so many of our Thunder ballers are part of the high school action.

>> Kyle's team, McKinley, beat Konawaena on Thursday and is now in the semifinals of the Pete Smith Classic at Kalaheo. Everyone tells me how surprised they are about McKinley, but if they'd seen the Tigers early in preseason, the pieces were coming together. Fast team with good basketball IQ, a year older and wiser. That means they're finishing games much better this season, and I dare say that a certain freshman named Kyle Moraga is a nice part of that big step forward by Coach Omori's golden Tigers.

>> Kapaa is listed at 6-foot-1 on the Kalani roster, and better than that, he's got a key role in their rotation, playing lots of minutes. He's the only freshman on the Falcons varsity roster, and he's learning and adapting nicely. It's a great situation for Kapaa, and Coach Davis is so good at molding a team together. They are fun to watch and dangerous to play against.

>> Jared is busy with Roosevelt's tournaments. Last time it was the Kailua tournament. Now it's the ‘Iolani Classic. He got a few minutes here and there, a lot of trust by Coach Hathaway.

We've got three busy freshmen playing varsity basketball, but if anybody had seen our guys playing in Kalani's summer varsity league the past couple of years, they would know that so many of our guys were ready already. AWESOME.

To those who try to break up our family

I've never really written about this before, though our players and parents have talked about it. When any other team tries to steal or poach our players, I used to let it go. OTB. Open Court. Lanakila. Maybe other teams, I don't know, but those three for sure.

But I've had enough. Lanakila already tried to take Chris and Tani from us before. Chris said he told their coaches NO. Tani ran the other way. I love our guys no matter what, but when they're loyal and appreciate their teammates and coaches, I love them that much more.

Kyle wanted to play with older players in 17U and we didn't have a 17U team last year, so I gave him my blessing when he went to play with Lanakila. But he made sure that he NEVER played against the Thunder. He still played with us in Kalani varsity league and 15U when he could.
Now Lanakila is poaching one of our other players and he plans to play against us in CAL League. He still wants to play with us in other leagues.

I've never let any of our guys two-time us before and it's not going to start now. Brotherhood means something, and if you can't learn it at 13 or 14, then it won't happen later. The guys who have asked to come back to us missed a rare chance to be part of something special.

I don't know of any other team, especially one as small as ours that does this:

• has three freshmen playing varsity basketball (and I think Tani should've been on varsity last year AND this year). That's not because of coaches and parents. That's because those guys worked their butts off when nobody's around to watch.

• played in 150 games this year and 120 games last year.

• has great parents who are positive and have never gotten reprimanded by leagues or referees.

* has coaches who are willing to pick players up no matter how close or far.

We do this because we love our Thunder. If anyone wants to walk away from that, it's sad and breaks my heart. But we aren't going to let these other teams poach and steal from us anymore without speaking up, and I'm going to speak up on the coaches who smile to my face and pull stunts like that behind our backs.

The Sharks were banned this coming year from CAL for openly trying to steal players from other teams at gym before/after games. A lot of coaches got sick and tired of their ways. I'd heard about it, but I never knew it was that bad until I heard about the ban.

OTB and Open Court were banned permanently from CAL awhile back for various reasons. Lanakila isn't much different from them, just more sneaky.

If you think double-crossing your basketball ohana is a great idea, just remember this: Sleep with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Thunder Family, Thunder Brotherhood

Two years ago, we had a kid named MT (I'm using his initials, not his full name) on our 12U team. That was a very good team, great chemistry together on and off the court. They worked hard. They worked together. They won the Aiea 12U League championship.

Shortly after that league, MT, who was our newest player, told me that he would start playing for the Sharks 13U team immediately. He'd just turned 13. He also said he wanted to keep playing for the Thunder, but not the 13U or 12U. He wanted to play for Thunder 15U, while playing AGAINST us in 13U for the Sharks.

I told him, no thanks. He didn't understand. He had no concept of team unity. All he knew was he had some friends from school on that Sharks team and he thought it would be a great idea to double-cross us. When he came to practice the next week, I asked him to explain his plans to the guys.

He turned around and walked away. His mother called me later and apologized. MT hadn't even talked with her about this decision and she was disappointed. His stepdad called me later and told me I shouldn't have "called him out in front of the team."

MT made his own decision to leave a great championship team. He didn't appreciate his teammates. He didn't appreciate all the parents who cheered for him and supported him through ups and downs.

He played for the Sharks for a few months. Oftentimes, he didn't listen to that coach, just like with the Thunder. Then he quit the Sharks (or was kicked off) and jumped to yet another team. All the things he needed to work on, he never improved on. He didn't really want to be coached UP. He wanted to have a social event with friends at practice and games, which is OK. But he didn't really love the game and his teammates enough to be loyal to them.

He loved the hype of the game, not the roots, the sweat, the grind of getting better. That's fine, you know. Not every basketball player is destined to get better every day, every year. In fact, that kind of player is rare.

We're just spoiled because since we started our team, we've had so many guys (and girls) who really, truly love the game and their teammates, and they keep working to get better. That's what makes me and all our coaches so satisfied and grateful.

Some guys are like MT, a nice kid who was more concerned with things other than his teammates. Our guys in the Thunder are about having fun, working hard and playing together.

We've had our share of guys like MT who eventually faded away. They didn't want to work. They wanted to play on other teams. They wanted to have everything and wound up with nothing or very little. Never really improved. Never put in the reps. Got cut by their JV or Varsity coaches. Or they made their teams and did nothing to help the team. They ask about coming back to play for us.

Then there are guys who worked their tails off night and day, guys like Keanu Vela, now playing college ball. Isaiah Visoria, also playing college ball. Drew Viena. On and on. It wasn't luck. It was hard work and a great love for the game and their teammates. Rain, sunshine, wind, no wind — it didn't matter. They worked. And they had huge fun while they worked.

In life, relationships, friendships, teamwork, teammates ... the great ones are rare and hard to find. Cherish it all and don't ever take them for granted. Hold them closely, because if you let them slip away, you may never have that blessing again.

If and when we are taken for granted, there's nothing we can do to stop anyone from leaving. The truth is, if they're going to treat us that way, we're better off if they do leave. We'll miss guys like that and pray for them to find what they're looking for.

If anyone wants to be a MT, we can't stop him. Wish him well and focus on our Thunder Ohana.

H1 Thunder 40, Court Kings West 30 (13U)

We did some good things this morning. Still plenty to improve on.

• Good ball movement. We did a pretty nice job of swinging the ball, penetrating and kicking passes to open teammates on the perimeter. We handled their man defense, and then we did fairly good also against their 1-2-2 zone and traps. The middle was almost always open. Grade: A-.

• Shot selection. Mostly good. We had a lot of open threes again, didn't hit a lot, but they were good shots and I'll take that any day. Grade: B+.

• Layups. We missed at least 10 layups. When we play taller, bigger teams (which is almost always), the key is to use the pump fake and take contact. If the layup isn't EASY, then get out and we can start over. It only takes us 10 seconds or so to get another open 3 or easy layup. But we rushed a LOT today under the basket, so we need to be a teeny bit more patient and smart with the pump fakes. Grade: D-.

• Fullcourt pressure: Fairly good today, still too much reaching, but it's getting better. Good traps, good reads for steals. Grade: B+.

• Transition (fastbreak) offense: We were jogging for some unearthly reason at the beginning. When we sprinted, we got early looks and put pressure on their defense. Grade: B.

• Transition defense: We were in halfcourt or fullcourt pressure mode all game long, so we did decent on getting back. Grade: B+.

• Boxing out: Not so good. Grade: D+.

• Physicality: We were willing to stand our ground and battle another big team? Some of us were. Kudos to Javan for playing tough in the middle and forcing the other team to earn points at the foul line. Grade: B.

• Energy level. We tired again. That's why we led 26-12 at halftime, but lost a lot of battles in the paint in the second half. We're too small to go into cruise mode. Must always play with intensity and smart aggression. Grade: C+.

• Hustle: This is the other side of energy, what we do when we're tired. Our guys were still hustling even as they struggled. Grade: B.

OVERALL GRADE: B.

We improved to 2-1 and our newest players are learning on the job.

Next: Monday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

I'll have the rest of the week's practice schedule tonight when I get my work schedule.

Wednesday funday

Wet court, drizzle dropping from above. No problem. Javan and Micah got in about 100 3-pointers each. It wasn't easy, but we worked together and got as much work in as we could in about 30-40 minutes. Where there's a will, there's a way. Today was about reps, passing and precision. It was also about refining our form, learning how to fix our shots when they're not falling.

Reminded me of Drew Viena, Maximillian Roe, Christian Akana and that tough-nosed group back in 2011-12 that loved to practice. These guys came to the park on a rainy afternoon, about 7-8 guys, and we shot for almost two hours in the rain. Right up to the last game of our summer league, Drew and these guys came to almost every practice.

Good memories. Today was another one.

New uniform: Tapa design

Our uniform maker/designer has a draft drawn out. I like! Reminder: If you are ordering the new (orange) uniform, please submit $30 immediately. If you also need to re-order a bigger teal blue uniform, that is also $30. It's an awesome deal, best quality fabric and stitching, and includes the hefty shipping cost. If you can't pay, please let me know and we'll keep track of everybody's fundraising efforts. But I want to send out the order real soon so that we have a the new uniforms for the leagues that start in January. Mahalo :)

Tuesday funday

So much work to do, but time is on our side. The guys had excellent work ethic today. No jabbering on and on. No interrupting teammates during drills. No sloppy passing. Just plain, old-school, old-fashioned work ethic.

Some players peak before high school, unwilling to put in the work. Others keep the reps going every day. Dyrbe Enos, Derrick Low. They remained hungry from the beginning and keep working through all their success — for their teammates. They get it!

We worked on ballhandling, shooting, and halfcourt offense today. Our newer guys have much to learn, but it's coming along day by day. Our vets showed patience and led by example. WELL DONE, THUNDER.
Lineup: Colin, Jayden, Jhevin, Jance, Jonah.

Next: Wednesday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
Thursday/Friday - No practice. Get your 200+ shots (and free throws) in.
Saturday, 10:00 am - Practice at Makiki Park.

Ali‘i 56, H1 Thunder 40 (13U)

Good effort and hustle today in a loss at Aiea 13U League. We're now 1-1 and back to square 1. I've always said that a team's focus gets sharper after a loss and I hope this is true of this one. We played good in spurts, but defensively we have work to do, and offensively, we need a little more patience.

We'll get there with more reps as a team. This is a challenge since so many of our guys are busy every day with their school team's practices, but we'll overcome. We ARE a good team and we WILL get better, so be patient and keep working and refining your skills and your contribution to your basketball brothers each day.

That was a good, tall, smart, skilled Ali‘i team we played today. Hat's off to them for playing the whole game with just five guys. Today was one of those days when we didn't make so many open shots, and we were a bit impatient offensively, sometimes not running our offense.

As a group, we're still fairly young and we've got some growing up to do, but I know we'll be better each week and get our shot at the title come playoff time. Repetition builds confidence! Looking forward to Monday's practice.

Lineup: Jayden, Colin Micah Ramos, Chaz, Micah, Jance, Javan, Walter,Felcris Jay Corpuz, Ryan.

Saturday funday

Good workout on Saturday morning at Makiki Park. Got some shooting work in — not as much as I would like — and a lot of work on inbounds plays, Sonic defense.
Lineup: Jance, Jonah, Chaz, Micah, Walter. (Am I forgetting someone?)
Keep working, Thunder. Get your shooting and ballhandling reps done every day. Improve just 1% each day and you get huge results over one month, one year. Stay hungry!

Practice Saturday 10 am

Reminder that practice is on Saturday, 10 am at Makiki Park.

We've got defensive work to do, and if weather is good, a lot of shooting and ballhandling to work on. Oh, and our inbounds plays. The new Thunder are learning pretty quickly and working hard at every practice along with our "vets".

Saturday, 10:00 am - Practice at Makiki Park.
Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups at Aiea District Park gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Ali‘i.
WE LOVVVVVE THIS GAME!

Coming soon

January will be busy. There are three leagues (at least) available, plus we'll be finishing up AIea League. These are leagues with 13U/11U or Intermediate/Elementary divisions.

Here are my preferences.
1. CAL (Compete & Learn). We've played in this since the beginning (2011), which makes us a charter member. Very well run, very good officiating. Greydon is very fair with teams, parents, coaches, players. He tries to accommodate us for schedule conflicts. Games are mostly at Kilauea gym.

Pros: Quality referees, good sportsmanship required, convenient location.

Cons: Normally none, but for this winter season, CAL uses Intermediate/Elementary format. That kind of works against us since some teams have repeat-grade players (who are 14), but it also allows us to suit upJosh M DE Jesus.

2. PAA (Positive Attitude Always). Overall, fairly good officiating. Lloyd has been helpful to us, tries to help out on schedule conflicts.

Pros: This is an age-division league. Games will NOT be at Koko Head gym, which is what I'm trying to avoid for the sake of some of our players and families.

Cons: Because the date cutoff is March 1, we will lose roughly half our guys who turn 14 during Jan-Feb.

Note: Lloyd said he will no longer allow teams to have two spots in the league while shuffling the same starters to both. I like this because it's too repetitive to play the same team twice before the playoffs.

3. NJB (National Junior Basketball). We normally play NJB in the summer, not fall or winter.

Pros: Convenience. Games are usually at Palama, Kilauea and Palolo. NJB has very specific rules, and though some people don't like them, at least the rules are clear-cut and enforced consistently.

Cons: Very erratic officiating. Stephen does not guarantee that bad referees will be banned. Also, players cannot play in two different age divisions. (This doesn't affect us in the winter league since no league has a 15U/JV division until late Feb.) Also, NJB is going by Intermediate/Elementary divisions for winter. This is also the most expensive league at $550 entry fee plus $5 per player (insurance). That works out to more than $600. PAA is $500 and CAL is normally $475.

All in all, these are three quality leagues. We will NOT play in these leagues: PAL, Open Court.

• PAL. Referees are NOT trained. Though some of their refs are veteran, experienced guys who are basically volunteering (the pay is very low), there are also some refs who are horrendous. Because of this, serious injuries are common. We can't enter as ourselves (H1 Thunder) and would have to assume the name of a park or something like that. Competition level is often not good. The only positive is that it is free. Not worth it.

• Open Court. Geremy does not like National Federation rules and says that his league prepares his teams for mainland tournaments. He simply doesn't think Federation (high school) rules allow real basketball. He also won't use high school referees. Also, when we played in their first league, I once questioned his scoreboard operator about missing points for our team, and the guy told me to shut up. He wanted to fight me after that. He is one of Geremy's right-hand guys. We don't need to be associated or affiliated with that kind of craziness. He asked us to play in their second league, and we politely declined. But he kept asking, offered half-price off, and even after I told him several times that we weren't coming back, he kept asking.

Open Court is banned from at least two leagues, and their league is down to just a few teams. We will not play in that farce of a league.

Thursday Night Lights

We've had Thunder playing varsity games before. Our first year, there were 16 Thunder playing 17U in NJB, and all of them ended up playing varsity basketball the next 2-3 years except for one. (Christian Akana played football and baseball in high school.)

But Thursday night was a first, seeing so many current and former Thunder players on the same court at McKinley's tournament. Kapaa Nishimura played a lot of minutes off the bench for Kalani in a close loss to Campbell. Kyle Moraga had a strong game off the bench for McKinley, hitting a big 3-pointer late in regulation to help force overtime. Tigers won that game close against University. That's pretty great for two freshmen in their first varsity games. Job well done!

Also got to see Keanu Pratt get some key minutes for the Tigers in crunch time. He didn't score, but he gave his team solid ballhandling and passing, and was part of a really strong man defense that was undersized against a tall UHS frontcourt.

I'm glad I got assigned to cover one of the games at the tourney for work. I got a chance to see all the games and enjoy them all. I'm looking forward to Friday's games at Kailua's tournament. Roosevelt won on Thursday against a good Baldwin team. I'll get to see another of our Thunder freshmen, Jared Elwin, suit up for the Rough Riders in a semifinal game.

AWESOME!

The common thread for all three freshmen is that each of them loves to play the game, loves to play hard for his teammates, and loves to put in the extra reps when nobody's around to watch. I always felt that it would hard to find guys who love this game as much as I do, but we have a lot of young Thunder who keep working hard through every age level. No substitute for reps, which build confidence. Proud of our guys!

Wednesday Funday

Good work today at Makiki Park despite a rainy morning. The court was dry by late afternoon and I got there soon as I could after covering a game at Radford.

We got more basic work in, especially with halfcourt offense and shooting. Made solid progress on new plays (W, Double 7). We make sure we're ready for man offense, but most times defenses play zone, so the more we shoot, the more reps, the better. And today wasn't windy for a change, so we were blessed. GOOD WORK, THUNDER!

Lineup: Chaz, Micah, Javan, Jance, Jonah.

Next: Saturday, 10:00 am - Practice at Makiki Park.

Sunday, 8:00 am - Stretching/warmups, Aiea District Park gym. 9:00 am - H1 Thunder vs. Ali‘i.

Wednesday start time

I just realized that I'm at McKinley later this week. Today, they have me at Radford's tourney, so I'm leaving after that first game and hopefully traffic won't be too bad. I should be at Makiki Park somewhere between 5 and 5:30 pm.

Monday Funday

Everybody else was busy today with school practice, etc., but we had Jonah today at Makiki Park working hard. He got 200+ shots in, everything from triple-threat/jab step drives, pull-up jumpers, floaters, 3-pointers, reverse layups. A good 45-minute workout with Jonah's dad, Joel, helping out a lot. Jonah's already fundamentally sound and skilled, so it's just a matter of reps every day, building one block at a time.

It was time well spent!

Next: Tuesday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
