But Thursday night was a first, seeing so many current and former Thunder players on the same court at McKinley's tournament. Kapaa Nishimura played a lot of minutes off the bench for Kalani in a close loss to Campbell. Kyle Moraga had a strong game off the bench for McKinley, hitting a big 3-pointer late in regulation to help force overtime. Tigers won that game close against University. That's pretty great for two freshmen in their first varsity games. Job well done!
Also got to see Keanu Pratt get some key minutes for the Tigers in crunch time. He didn't score, but he gave his team solid ballhandling and passing, and was part of a really strong man defense that was undersized against a tall UHS frontcourt.
I'm glad I got assigned to cover one of the games at the tourney for work. I got a chance to see all the games and enjoy them all. I'm looking forward to Friday's games at Kailua's tournament. Roosevelt won on Thursday against a good Baldwin team. I'll get to see another of our Thunder freshmen, Jared Elwin, suit up for the Rough Riders in a semifinal game.
AWESOME!
The common thread for all three freshmen is that each of them loves to play the game, loves to play hard for his teammates, and loves to put in the extra reps when nobody's around to watch. I always felt that it would hard to find guys who love this game as much as I do, but we have a lot of young Thunder who keep working hard through every age level. No substitute for reps, which build confidence. Proud of our guys!
WE LUB THIS GAAAME!!
