Grinnell College has been one of the top scoring basketball teams in the nation for a long time. Everybody scouts them and prepares for the onslaught of 3-point bombs and fastbreak craziness, and yet, nobody really stops Grinnell. We have a play in our playbook that was borrowed from them.
Here's another one. Go to 1:16 and you'll see what I mean. One of the keys to GC's success is RAPID PACE. Everyone moves. No walking. No slow jogging. It's all about pace and timing. The screeners don't try to do too much. They let the receiver do the work, preventing moving screen violations. On this play, it's about the PICK AND POP on the right side after a pass to the wing. On the left, it's the 5 (who made the inbounds pass) running quickly downcourt and setting the back end of the staggered screen at the left elbow for the 2 (stationed on the left low post).
The 4 starts at the left wing before setting the initial screen at the low post. This (double) staggered screen sets up the 2 for a 3-point shot at the top of the key. In this case, the 3 (at right wing) drives and draws a defender, dumping a pass to the 4 (low post) for an easy layup.
All kinds of possibilities exist in this play. Plenty of room to drive, and the spacing is beautiful. Three different players have a chance to get open for the 3, and when that's not available, there is at least one offensive player at point-blank range of the basket for an easy shot.
All of this is done at a high speed, but under control. Don't have a name for this yet. It shouldn't be obvious (Grinnell), shouldn't be a long name. I'm thinking "Aubrey." But I'm open to suggestions.
