Waipahu Elite 43, H1 Thunder 39 (JV)
Aiea JV tournament consolation play
The hustle was there but our intelligence often was not. We trailed 17-12 at the half after committing unforced turnovers and not consistently attacking the paint.
Sierra caught fire in the second had and sparked our rally . We went up by 5. She hit three treys all from the left corner Icerntheir zone. We also got some good fast real points from Radyn and Tani, but we also gave a bunch defensively with some of our bigs not available.
Then one of their guys hit pick/roll 3 from NBA range to break a 38-all tie with about :20 left. We never got back to even. Good win for a scrappy Waipahu squad and hopefully another learning experience for our JV.
All we can do is work every day on our strengths and weaknesses. If we don't do that, it's not enough and it's my responsibility to get everyone focused and motivated to do this. So right now it is clear I am failing at this. Too many guys are missing practice even though they might not have a school practice or workout.
And all the momentum and chemistry we had a month ago is slipping away. We'll see how this week goes with our two games at Kalani League. If we don't get any sense of commitment and accountability - guys not texting when they don't come to practice - we'll rethink our plans on the Maui trip. We know how good we can be. Now we know the other end of the spectrum when we aren't cohesive.
We will still fundraise and keep practicing, but the no- show guys will be off the travel roster. I saw enough this weekend of what happens to a championship team when guys decide to bail.
The plan is to go to the Maui Summer Classic and win the Intermediate and JV titles. Can't do that with guys who skip practices and games without letting us know why.
