Saturday Night Live

H1 Thunder 47, Team Hustle 17
Ikaika League, JV Division, Kaneohe gym
Small ball is what our younger guys do best. They've been battling teams with 6-footers, guys 6-2, 6-4 for years. Great effort and teamwork tonight from start to finish.

Lineup: Skylar Kawakami-bechtel, Jayden, Colin Micah Ramos, Ryan, Jonah, Felcris Ahadain, Micah Visoria,

UPDATE: Saturday marathon

(Posted Sat Aug 15 on FB)
We rallied from about 18 down to within 37-36 before losing to the Sharks, 44-36, in Ikaika JV League this morning. I'm glad we didn't forfeit; early this morning we had just 4 players. And I'm proud of our guys for their courage in rallying back. Just need to play smarter early in the game. It's been a trend lately.

Drove to Kilauea from Salt Lake and our Varsity Thunder beat Crush 57-41 in a physical battle. We were behind in this early, too. I keep hoping I don't have to raise my intensity level for us to play great defense and box out, but me being calm doesn't seem to work at all with our older (JV/V) guys. Fortunately, we buckled down and got much more physical. Strong, balanced basketball by our older guys. Nice work on fullcourt pressure.

Third game was 13U Gold, and we were up 17-1 at the half (I think). Really solid team defense in fullcourt and halfcourt. Absolute hustle, and our Varsity guys set the tone in the game earlier. D-Up rallied in the final quarter to get within 6, but we closed out well defensively and won 24-16.

Final game is tonight in PAA JV League at Kaneohe gym. Game time is 6:45 (corrected time).

We play Team Hustle.
WE LUB THIS GAAAAAME!!

13U: Lanakila 35, Thunder 33, 2 OT

Just got the word from Chris Afe. Thunder 13U lost to Lanakila by 2 points in double overtime. Tough loss. The guys misunderstood the OT rule (first to score 3 points), something like that. But I'm glad to hear everybody played solid and played together. These close losses are painful, but we stick together and things balance out in the end.

Mahalo to Coach Roy for giving everybody a ride to Kaneohe gym.

Note: I found out later that the referee told our team that the first team to score 3 points would win, which is why our guys shot 3-pointers instead of open layups in the final seconds of the first overtime with the score tied. They didn't realize that having a lead at the end of the 1-minute overtime was good enough to win the game.

This is the second time PAA League has had problems explaining the OT rule to our team, but if I'd been there, things would've been understood. Hard to blame our coaches or the refs in this situation, but in the end, I'm disappointed in the refs for not making sure EVERYBODY on both teams knew the rule clearly. I'll talk with PAA League later.

Video: Thunder vs. Knights

Thunder vs. Knights, PAA Varsity Tournament, Wednesday, Apr. 27, 2013, Kaneohe District Park Gym. I've been so lethargic lately because of this flu, but now that it's almost gone, I'm catching up on all these game videos.

Seeing this game was a trip. The video tells the story that our coaches and players tried to explain to me. We had some extreme lulls and peaks, and thankfully our 18U stepped up in the clutch with so many great defensive and offensive plays to rally from a double-digit deficit.

Proud of our Thunder!

17U: Thunder 53, Knights 52, OT

Another thriller for the Thunder 17U. John had a steal and hit a free throw with :12 for the win.

Don't know a lot since I was home resting most of the night (flu), but thanks to Coach Bo and the Ogoshis and John for texting me the final score. The boys dug deep with the game at Kaneohe and the Knights playing strong before a big home crowd. Coach Bo said their crowd was nuts.

Isaiah was unable to play (family plans), Bryson wasn't there (again), but the guys stepped up, both starters and reserves. It's really satisfying to know that everybody is playing for the team above everything else no matter what his role is. Every role is crucial! I won't see the game video until tomorrow at the earliest, but another huge effort by our 17U made my day. AGAIN. Way to go, Thunder!

Coach Larry said the Thunder came through in the late going with some big shots. Prior to that, he said we had some offensive struggles against the Knights' 1-2-2 zone, which is understandable with Isaiah and Bryson missing. They know how to run our 2-Out offense really well. It takes precision and a lot of patience to exploit a 1-2-2, which is always weak on the low post ONLY IF we swing the ball smartly and quickly. Can't have any ball stoppages to beat a 1-2-2 consistently. We'll work on this at Sunday's practice (11 am McCully).

Mahalo to Coach Roy for picking up Mick and Brent, and also for picking up the basketballs, uniforms and video camera.
