Maui Summer Classic, JV Division
1. We started out badly. Forced, rushed shots for the first 5-6 minutes and beyond. Upcountry played man defense and we still settled for some hurried shots for no good reason.
2. Outphysicaled. Our almost-entirely 8th grade team got pushed around by a much older team. And yet we were down just 7 late in the first half despite playing sub-par basketball. But the second half was about our fatigue. And that led to a lot of missed open shots. Better offensive execution and ball movement, but tired legs and missed shots. Upcountry is a good team with a solid big man (around 6-3). Beatable if we play well. Especially the way we played defense on the big man in the second half. Tani was too strong for him and he didn't score much, and even dribbled out of the key one time, worried his shot would be blocked. But the damage was already done.
We've got two JV games in the morning. With Josh D hurting (he injured his right elbow the night before the trip), we're down to 7 players. Test of endurance ahead.
The good news is that Pool Play — all four games in JV division — is strictly for seeding. All teams make the championship bracket. But more than that, we just want to start playing consistently smart and physical basketball. The officials allow it and we have to step it up no matter what the age difference is.
And yes... if our actual JV team was here, they would've won this game. Fairly close, but we would've won.
Lineup: Micah Visoria, Ryan Higashionna, Josh M DE Jesus, Tanielu Mosi Afe, Jason Doyle, Felcris Ahadain, Jonah Gormley, Chaz Enos.
