Some updates on league and tournament info.
>> NO AIEA TOURNEY.
It breaks my heart a bit, but we're not playing in the Aiea Blazers Intermediate Tournament this weekend. This is the first time we've missed an Inter tournament at Aiea since 2011 or 2012. We have too short-handed of a roster to play 5 games in 2 1/2 days, and spending the $300 would not be worth it in that scenario. The impact of school teams practicing so heavily in the summer — this was not the norm the past few years — has made a difference. It's great for the school programs, heavy impact on us.
The good news is that we now have more opportunities to fundraise this weekend.
>> IKAIKA LEAGUE.
We need to submit to Ikaika League whatever fees and divisions we are going to play in. It seems we'll be in Varsity and JV divisions. We're not going to have enough players for an Intermediate team. That could change, but I'm not going to commit to paying that $550 or so unless we have numbers and enough competitive players.
>> PAA LEAGUE.
This starts at the end of this month, and I've told Lloyd Lee that we'll play in the Varsity and JV divisions, but not in Intermediate for the same reason we're not suiting up for Ikaika Inter division.
PAA does have a Fourth-grade Division, however, and because we have a couple of 4th graders (Lorelai, DJ), this is a possibility. Just need more players who are committed to practice. Players with cooperative parents, i.e. willing to drive their kids to practice.
>> NJB Summer Classic.
They've sent out another email inviting teams, which means they don't have enough yet or just want more. Their divisions are 14U and 17U. They also have a 12U, but we lack numbers there.
The tourney is July 15-19 and they charge $350 per team. Players cannot play on more than one team, even if they want to play in different age divisions. Again, this could cut into our fundraising time on the weekend. If we have enough interest and commitment, I'm all ears. Radyn's dad said they won't play in this one.
>> DEFENDING THE FORT.
The guys who aren't traveling, which is basically the entire V/JV roster, will hold down the fort in the Kalani and Le Jardin league playoffs while the younger guys are on Maui. Coach Larry and Coach Bino will be in charge. Thank you, Coaches!
>> PAL PAL.
We've never played in the PAL League, but for the younger guys, I don't mind this as an option. Our remaining Pups (the players who will be 8th graders this fall) can man a PAL roster. If PAL has a 4th grade division, that's another option.
One of the only things I like about PAL is that there is no entry fee. I just don't like the erratic level of officiating in the older divisions, so we'll see.
>> CAL CAL.
When CAL resumes in the fall, our Pups could enter again as a team in the Intermediate Silver Division. Things could change and we could have new additions by then, which means staying in the Gold Division. Right now, though, it looks like the smart move for our Thunder is Silver once we lose Ryan, Jonah, Jhevin, Jason, Trinity.
