H1 Thunder 32, Hawaii Storm 20 (JV)

Ikaika League, JV Division semifinals, McCully gym
Great defensive teamwork, so much communication between our Thunder tonight, really a groundbreaking night. I say that because for years we've often been a zone team that will use fullcourt pressure as a weapon. With our JV group, we thrive more on our man defense, less fullcourt pressure, and solid offensive execution.

We got our share of fastbreak layups thanks in large part to solid rebounding and Tani's speed, but our defense was terrific as a team. That includes the few minutes when our Intermediate Thunder got on the floor.

Also big mahalo to our coaches — Larry and Bino — for being there tonight, as well as one of our former coaches, Coach Bo, who came to support and offer a hand tonight. It's important to me that our veteran coaches are there whether I'm working and away or not. The more brainpower, the better, all the time.

Lineup: Sierra, Trinity, Jhevin, Jance, Josh R, Micah, Ryan, Colin, Chris, Jonah, Jared, Kyle, Jayden, Radyn, Kali'a, Tenchi, Chase, Tani Mosi.

Now, the other side of tonight's game is this: the championship game is tomorrow (Sunday), 12:20 pm, Aiea gym. This surprised me. I thought I'd read the bracket correctly earlier, that we'd play next week. But Clay Tang, the league director, said it's the third-place game that will be played next week. I simply misread it, and surprisingly none of our parents caught my error when I forwarded the brackets in recent weeks.

Fortunately, almost all our guys can make the game tomorrow despite the short notice. I'm going to have to cut out of my morning meeting to pick some guys up starting at 10:30 am.
