13U league at Aiea?

Just got an e-mail today from Rob Godinez III of the Aiea Blazers. They are offering a 13U league at Aiea gym that will be played on Sunday mornings beginning on Nov. 23.

This works for me since I don't work Sunday mornings. If we have enough interest and players, maybe we enter. Right now, our 13U guys (as of Nov. 23) are Colin, Javan, Chris, Micah, Ryan, Jayden and Chazz. That's six guys and I'm not sure how available everybody is.

If we cannot, that's fine too. I just wanted to get the word out. We'll need more 13U guys anyway, whether it's a winter league or spring league. Felcris turns 14 on Nov. 23. Colin turns 14 in late January. Javan and Chris turn 14 in February. Micah turns 14 in March.

Sunday mornings, anyone?

Happy 13th, Walter

Happy Belated Birthday, Walter!
Relentlessly working every day!

Video: Thunder vs Swish (13U)

Finally able to load a FULL GAME again on YouTube. I'm not sure what the problem was the past 2 or 3 months, but this loaded overnight. I know yesterday morning, when I tried it kept disconnecting and the Oceanic signal was off and on. What a pain in the okole. But it's worth it. More games and highlights coming.

Coming next

• Scrimmage (with referees) at Mid-Pacific during the week of Nov. 17. Varsity coach Ryan Hirata called a few days ago and invited us. Always fun to play in high school gyms. NOTE: This is a JV scrimmage and our non-high school guys will play. Those of you who are playing JV or varsity basketball are not going to suit up for this UNLESS your coach allows it. Which I doubt. We'll take 'em on with our 13U/eight graders.

• Tournament? Still thinking about organizing an intermediate tourney in November. Lot of variables and cost involved, like gym rental cost, referees, scoreboard operators/scorekeepers. I'll ask around and see if there's any interest. Preference is to have school teams enter. The ILH private-school intermediate teams play their season in late November and December, I think.

• There IS a HI-PAL intermediate level (or 13U) tournament in Hilo every December. I'm not big on that one since the competitive level isn't super high, and it's a busy time of year for me and all the parents. But it's a thought.

• CAL and PAA start their leagues again in January. CAL will have intermediate and elementary divisions, which means Big Josh will be eligible to play. Same with guys who are turning 14 this winter like Felcris and Colin. We could definitely use 2 more players since Chris will be busy with Big Boyz winter football league (January to May).

• Fundraisers. Planning on a car wash in the next 30 days. Also Free-Throw Challenge II. We've got that monthly bill to pay (loan), plus the upcoming leagues and new uniforms. Coach Bo has asked us to help with new uniforms for Anuenue (high school), where he's an assistant coach, so that could be a small fundraiser for us. Gerard, who hooked us up with our newest uniforms (teal blue), is supportive of that idea.

• And about uniforms... Everybody has a different color preference. I'll continue to take everyone's input.

Felcris likes navy blue. Josh prefers sky blue. Kali‘a likes black. Tani likes orange. I like metallic silver, gold and copper (like a shiny penny). Tough to find a uniform shop that has those metallic fabrics though. It would be simpler to re-order a new set of the current teal blue uniforms, especially since everybody's going to grow in the next several months. So we could go with new teals for guys who need a bigger size, PLUS another color. Maybe white with metallic copper (instead of our original orange). (See photo below for an idea of what the white/copper combo can look like.)

• Travel. Some of the guys have asked about next summer. I still want us to go somewhere new. Vegas/Anaheim and Kona will always be there. So I'm going to get in contact again with Coach Young at ‘Iolani. He told me he'd get in touch with his guy in China since they have a connection with the Nike-affiliated schools there. If we could go there in the summer and play five or six middle-school or high school teams, that would be fantastic!

It doesn't have to be China. Open to ideas.

• Practices. We'll still have drill workouts to keep improving our fundamentals. Shooting. Ballhandling. On-ball defense. I'm thinking once or twice a week, especially if we can find a gym with open play. I'll let everybody know. Enjoy the free time off for now.

WEEEE LUBBB THIS GAAAAME!!

H1 Thunder 67, Swish 38 (13U)

CAL 13U Division, Kilauea gym
Our last game of the fall season was fun to watch. Good push on the fastbreak. Good ball movement on the secondary break. We got a lot of 3-point shots off and shot a real good percentage. Think we might have made 10 treys today. Not bad.

Really good defensive work on the perimeter. Swish had big Bailey Lee in the middle, a really solid big man with excellent footwork. He played with us a few months ago as a fill-in during PAA League. He did his damage, but we got the ball in quickly most times and everybody did a pretty good job with keeping the pace fast.

Also got a lot of minutes for Walter, who is getting better every time there's 5-on-5, and Chazz, our super sub. He hit a trey today from the right corner, the youngest Thunder player ever, and Chazz is also the youngest Thunder to make a 3 in a game. Before Chazz, the youngest may have been Chris (11 at the time) or Malosi Viena (11?).

No leagues for the next couple of months unless I hear about one that allows eighth graders. The leagues that just started are all 12-Under (with exceptions).

WE LUB THIS GAME!!
Lineup: Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Josh M DE Jesus, Ryan Higashionna, Colin Micah Ramos, Jayden Ramos, Walter Berthold, Chazz.

Owls 43, H1 Thunder 37 (15U)

CAL 15U Division, Kilauea gym
Good battle from the start. They had the height advantage with a springy 6-2 kid who is a son of former UH player Tim Shepherd. He drove for at least five layups on us from the high post. We had the fastbreak, but we were very sloppy from the beginning, didn't execute our halfcourt offense a lot. More turnovers than baskets, all unforced against a 2-3 zone. The good thing most times with our 15U is they have good chemistry. The bad thing? Not enough practice time together, and suddenly executing againts a simple 2-3 zone gets real complicated.

It was a good 15U season. Our record was 6-2 or something like that even with the lack of practice time. I'll check when I get home.

Main thing is, please learn from success and mistakes. Repeat what works well. Cut out all the things that lead to problems. In other words, play fundamentally strong basketball at all times and everything falls into place. Get rid of the things that don't work against good teams. Fundamentals first.

The other good thing is we did well even though everybody (except Sierra and Anu) is only 14.

LOVE YOU GUYS!
Lineup: Sierra Murobayashi, Josh M DE Jesus, Kapaa Nishimura, Gabriel Porras, Chase Santos, Keanu Pratt, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Ryan Higashionna, Colin Micah Ramos, Micah Visoria.
MAHALO to Coach Ray for shooting the video for both games today!

Lanakila 44, H1 Thunder 34 (13U)

CAL 13U Division, Kilauea gym
We led all the way until the final 3-4 minutes. Fatigue got to us, and though Lanakila is a much taller team than us, we shot so well in the first half. I don't know how many 3-pointers we made, but it was a lot. We passed so well. Great defense.

But we were lucky to play this game. Because of some unforseen happenings, we were down to 4 players. Big mahalo to Suzy for bringing Chazz and Micah (sore shoulder) to Kilauea so we didn't have to forfeit.

The only team we lost to in CAL 13U was Lanakila. That one was a 32-31 OT loss. This game was very similar, leading for most of the game before fatigue got us. But I'm proud of the effort our guys played with. ALL HEART.

Lineup: Micah, Chazz, Felcris, Ryan, Walter, Jayden.
Next: Saturday, 11:30 am - H1 Thunder vs. Swish (13U), Kilauea gym.
Let's make our last game of the season a memorable one. WE LUB THIS GAAAAME!

H1 Thunder 56, McKinley 28 (15U)

CAL 15U Division, Kilauea gym
We had five of our 15U players (Josh, Tani, Sierra, Gabriel, Chase), plus Ryan and Felcris from our 13U. That was enough depth to keep us fresh and fast all game long. Good team defense, good passing, good hustle. Ingredients for a solid victory.

Next: Sunday, 10:40 am - H1 Thunder vs. Owls (15U), Kilauea gym. Not sure if Tani is going and our 13U are going to be severely depleted again. Hope everybody can make it to our lats league game of the season.

Thursday funday

Worked most of the night and day, paid for it later. I crashed out at 4 pm, got up at 5:30. LATE FOR PRACTICE!
We still got a solid workout in. Sierra and Walter did fullcourt layup/bank shot drills, lot of 1-on-1 work. A lot of good effort, plenty of fundamentals to improve on, little by little every day.
WE LUB THIS GAME!

Next: Saturday, 11:10 am - H1 Thunder vs. McKinley (CAL 15U), Kilauea gym.

Sunday, 10:40 am - Thunder vs. Owls (CAL 15U), Kilauea gym.
Sunday, 11:30 am - Thunder vs. Swish (CAL 13U), Kilauea gym.

Wednesday funday

Good workout this afternoon by Walter. Free throws, shooting and 1-on-1 against the old coach. He hit five 3-pointers in a row to win. Rep by rep, day by day, season by season, nothing stops the dedicated.
Next: Thursday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Winter schedule

The week of Nov. 17-22, we have a JV scrimmage (with referees) at Mid-Pacific. Coach Ryan Hirata called tonight. More details later.

I'm hoping we have a lot of Intermediate and JV games/scrimmagesin November and December. We'll have a lot of our 15U guys missing, but we'll have our 13U guys to step in and step up.

Monday funday

Ryan, Sierra and Little Josh got a LOT of shooting done today. Everything from layups to bank shots to 3-pointers, all at game speed. A good 50 minutes of work with ballhandling/on-ball defense work and free throws. Also got some basic work done with Princeton/UCLA handoff/pick and roll/cutting.

Mastering the fundamentals leads to success. Easy layups. Open threes. Easier said than done, so we work at it every day. Good work, Thunder!

Mahalo Brandon!

By day he's a varsity baseball player. By night and weekends, he's a dedicated video camera man for H1 Thunder basketball. H1 Thunder 41, Raiders 26 (13U)

CAL League, 13U Gold Division, Kilauea gym
Strong team win by our 6 Thunder. Three of them played in the earlier 15U game, but they had the stamina to keep the pressure on another team with a tall (6 foot) center.

Our 13U is now 6-1 in CAL League even though we've been shorthanded. These guys play great team basketball a lot of times and that's fun to watch.

Big mahalo to Coach Ray for bringing Colin from clinic. Jayden was unable to play, but Colin was able to come to the game. That gave us 6 players instead of 5, so guys could get subbed out and drink some water in a very hot mid-day game.

I'm just glad we didn't have to forfeit.

Lineup: Josh Roberts, Walter Berthold, Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria,Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Colin Micah Ramos.
Next: Monday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.

Happy Birthday, Kali‘a!

It's a Sunday, he practices and plays JV football 6 days a week, and he could've been at home recuperating and resting. But no. Kali‘a was at the gym playing for the H1 Thunder in the morning. That's his idea of birthday fun.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, #22/#23/#52. WE LUB YOU MAAAN!

Thank you, Mrs. Chang!

Mahalo to Mrs. Chang for blessing us again with a donation. We appreciate you, Mrs. C! Thanks for coming to our games, including our two battles today. You and Sanford are extremely supportive. Thank you!

HomeGrown 44, H1 Thunder 42 (15U)

CAL League, 15U Division, Kilauea gym
This was close all the way. We had the lead for most of the second half. HG played man on us and our execution was pretty good with Kali‘a on the low post, working inside-out.

Kapaa had another solid game, but he fouled out with about 2 minutes left and we were up 2 (I think). HG tied it at 42 had the ball for a final shot. We never got one. We didn't execute a play with about :10 left, called time out with :06, and HG stole our inbounds pass and scored at the buzzer for the win.

It's our first loss in CAL 15U this fall, which is pretty amazing considering all of the missing guys, busy schedules, etc. But our 5 15U Thunder today did well, as did our 3 13U Thunder who were subs. Our 13U kids got us back in the game after they entered with us trailing 12-5 at the start.

We played pretty good, but we all could've played a little better, so we take it as a team loss.

I'm proud of our guys more than anything for taking the loss well. Nobody was blaming anybody. We know we all missed shots, had a turnover or two, over the course of the game. Just about all our guys have won games with shots or steals, too. I like this about our guys. They have a tremendous sense of grace and compassion.

Lineup: Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain, Ryan Higashionna, Micah Visoria,Kali'a Mielke, Josh M DE Jesus, Sierra Murobayashi, Kapaa Nishimura,Gabriel Porras.

Thursday funday

Solid workout for Jared, Little Josh and Adam. Shooting drills, pull-up jumpers and threes, UCLA/Princeton/8-Ball/9-Ball/9-Mac reps. Good work, Thunder!
Lineup: Jared Elwin, Josh Roberts, Adam.
Next: ## CAL 15U/13U schedule (released 9/30) ##
Saturday, Oct. 4, 12:00 pm - Thunder vs. Team Dream (CAL 13U), Kilauea gym
Sunday, Oct. 5, 10:20 am - Thunder vs. HomeGrown (CAL 15U), Kilauea gym
Sunday, Oct. 5, 11:10 am - Thunder vs. Raiders (CAL 13U), Kilauea gym

Wednesday funday

Solid work today by Ryan and Adam (Jared's friend). A lot of fundamentals: fullcourt layups (both hands), transition pull-up bank shots and 3-pointers, also hesitation dribble drive/bank shots and floaters. A lot of on-ball defense/ballhandling work. Good matchup between the two of them.

We've got 4 games this weekend, so I would like to see everybody make it to practice on Thursday.
Colin and Jayden can't make the Sunday games due to clinic. I put in a request to CAL League (Greydon Espinda) for a switch to afternoon for the 13U game. Otherwise, we'll have only 5 players, and that's always risky if someone gets hurt or sick before the game.

It's tough for Greydon to switch games at this point, but we have to try and ask.

Game video update 10/1

It's been a frustrating 2 1/2 weeks. Both YouTube and Vimeo (I signed up for a 1-month subscription) have rejected the latest game videos. The only reasons would be: 1) length (35-40 minutes), 2) poor connection (my iMac is ancient by current standards), or 3) music copyright.

I've always been aware of the way YouTube deals with music copyright. That's why I use music that is available free online. That always does the trick, and YouTube doesn't reject our previous videos. But for some reason, I think this is the current problem. Why?

I'm currently loading a shorter (highlights only) video that has no music on it. Right now, Vimeo is allowing the upload beautifully. It's up to 10% already after just 5 minutes, just gobbling it up. I'll try this on YouTube later; I can't test YT right now because I'm loading football videos for work.

If it is music that suddenly has become the problem, it's fine. As long as I don't have to cut videos to 15 minutes or less. That's a pain in the okole, having more videos to load, more risk of disconnections.

Monday funday

Good workout today, got in a solid 60 minutes of shooting drills, basic offensive sets (UCLA cut, Princeton cut/handoff)ballhandling/on-ball defense in Alpha mode.

Lineup: Josh Roberts, Walter Berthold, Micah Visoria, Jared Elwin, Sierra Murobayashi. Jared's friend Adam also practiced. Good job, Thunder!

Jared and Littlle Josh pulled double duty. Jared had a conditioning workout at Roosevelt in the afternoon before coming to practice. They ran the bleachers in the heat. Josh had cross country practice before making it to Makiki Park.

Next: Wednesday, 5:00 pm - Practice at Makiki Park.
