Just 6 strong tonight, and our guys played a helluva game.
We led by 7 (29-22) in the second half and had some nice halfcourt execution against their man defense. Then came some mistakes, and the Warriors pounded the ball right through our zone defense to take a 32-31 lead with a minute left.
We got a bucket by Kapaa on an inbounds play with :19 left for a 33-32 lead. We had only 2 team fouls, so we gave out fouls. Kamehameha had the ball under its basket with :06 to play, passed the ball in, couldn't get a good look right away. The ball ended up in the corner, where their guy ran over Kanehe, who fell. Shoulder down, totally dipped it into Kanehe's gut and sent him flying backwards to the floor.
The guy then backed up, then shot a runner from 17 feet out, all net, with :03 left.
Kanehe's fullcourt shot at the buzzer missed. It could've been an offensive foul when there's THAT much contact, but we shouldn't have been in that situation. We didn't execute in the final 3 minutes and let Kamehameha take control.
There are other things I could've done down the stretch. But I wanted to give our guys a chance to all touch the ball and close out a win as a team. We played well enough to win, and hopefully we learn from the small mistakes that happened early and late in the game. We probably had 15 (or more) turnovers, all unforced.
Kapaa shot well from the perimeter and Raydyn was clutch for us on drives and low-post offense. A lot of positives in this game, regardless of the result.
Lineup: Kanehe Nishimura, Kapaa Nishimura, Radyn Kaleikini, Josh M DE Jesus, Chase Santos, Felcris Jay Corpuz Ahadain.
Next: Wednesday, 8:00 pm - Thunder vs. Mid-Pacific, Maryknoll JV League championship game.
