Video: 17U vs. H4C

Part 1 Part 2

12U: League starts April 6

Heads up! Aiea is probably starting a 12U league this coming Saturday, April 6. All games will be on Saturdays from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Originally, an outside guy was going to run the league, but that fell through, so the gym director (Rob Godinez III) is organizing it. There are six teams right now and they're looking for two more.

Our situation is interesting, to say the least. Because the age cutoff is June 8 — all players must be 12 or younger when the league ends on that date — we lost a lot of guys. Jared (April 8) and Kalai (May 25) can't play. I'm not sure about Ryan or Joshua. So I need a quick response from you guys.

This is what I think our roster is for this 12U league:

Name, birthdate, age as of June 8
Micah Visoria, 3/2/01, 12
Walter Berthold, 10/25/01, 12
Ryan Higashionna, ?, 12?
Joshua de Jesus, ?, 12?
Javan Montiho, ?, 12?
Chris Afe, 2/12/01, 12
Felcris Corpuz, ?, 12?

Chris still has football for another week or two and all his games are on Saturdays. Javan just started wrestling.

A lot of maybes. So I need to know ASAP. We will need probably three or four new players.

Who's in?

17U: Thunder 56, Chargers 51 (update)

That was quite a spectacle at Aiea District Park Gym tonight for coaches and watchers alike. Our Thunder gunners were in attack mode, moving the ball exquisitely at times, finding open teammates. We hit 9 11 3-pointers in the first half — THE FIRST HALF — in 20 22 attempts and led 35-22 at the break.

(Update/note: Our math during post-game dinner was off. One of the errors was a 3 by Chase that was actually a 2, feet on the line. But nine treys in a half is pretty decent.)

Then Pearl City caught fire. That #6 guy was smooth with that nice jump shot, and they took the lead on us (can't remember that score), but we finished strong. Our first five executed very well down the stretch, with Isaiah working with Tai on the pick and roll, with Haka finding seams against the Chargers' man-to-man defense. It was a good finish for an up-and-down game.

We got by without Alleck (studying), without Mike (volleyball). I would've like to have seen more low-post opportunities for Kaelen and Max while the second group was on the floor, but we'll get back to practice and work on the issues we had tonight. Overall, much more positives than negatives, which is something I know Coach Larry, myself, and all of us can be optimistic about this early in the 17U spring season. All our work in the past year, two years as a group has forged a solid chemistry.

We're not perfect (yet), but that teamwork will continue to push us higher. It was another fun night of often-times beautiful basketball. Thanks boys. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Who needs a ride?

The baseball games are cancelled, which means I'm off this afternoon, no work. That means I can give you guys a ride to tonight's 17U game at Aiea Gym. Who needs a ride? I know Max asked for one. Anybody else?

Game is 6:20 pm, so I want to be out of town and onward ho to Aiea by 5:00 pm at the latest. Traffic will be slow because of the rain.

Call me 551-1054.

17U: Thunder 67, Hoops4Christ 56

GOOD WORK today by Thunder 17U, a 67-56 win over Hoops4Christ. We got the tempo going fast early and kept it going for most of the game. Room for improvement? Of course. But I like the way we're playing together, building chemistry, making the extra pass.

Mahalo to Coach Rob Godinez III for inviting us to play in this quick Goodwill Tourney. Now 17U starts playing in the Aiea 17U League tomorrow, 6:20 pm, against Pearl City. Warmups 5:20 pm. I'll be working at a baseball game (Moanalua), so guys who need a ride, I can only pick you up before 2:30. Let me know if you need a ride and I'll make some calls so we can car pool.

12U league in April?

HEADS UP: There may be a 12U league at Aiea starting in April. Just got some info from Rob Godinez about it, not much more.

1. He's not running the league.

2. I don't know what the birthdate cutoff will be either.

But that would be cool if we have a 12U league to play in since there's a shortage of leagues aside from NJB All-Net, and we're on their 13U wait list.

Wanted: Cameraman for today's game

THUNDER ALERT: Need a video cameraman for this afternoon's 17U game. Josh and Jimark are busy. Isaiah will be playing. $10 credit or cash. If you do a good job, of course.

Mahalos and more

It's been a crazy busy few weeks, but it's also been crazy fun, too. None of the fun happens without our parents and coaches.

BIG MAHALO to Uncle Nate for bringing snacks to the game on Sunday morning at Koko Head Gym. The Spanish rolls went in roughly 60 seconds. No joke. I should've grabbed two or three when I had the chance.

BIG MAHALO to Uncle Scott & Auntie Claire for bringing bentos and all kinds of ono food for the kids at Aiea Gym. Especially the food between games to keep the guys' tanks full.

BIG MAHALO to Auntie Dora for bringing water and snacks to our 17U tournament games, also at Aiea.

Finally, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JIMARK! Ji turned 15 on Sunday and took a well-earned day off. He's been shooting the game videos for our 13U and 12U diligently and loyally for a long time now. He never did it for anything, not asking for a cent or a plate lunch or anything. Thank you, Jimark.

17U: Thunder 57, Canadians 44

17U went to work today, playing fast and relentless against the Canadian team (Bev Facey) for a good stretch. When we needed to be patient, we did fairly well, getting some solid minutes from our second unit. But our bread and butter is our defensive intensity, speed and perimeter accuracy, and we got that today with the return of Haka and Tai, along with Bryson, Mick and Isaiah.

I wasn't sure how our rebounding would go against a tall team, especially with Mike gone (volleyball), but we did pretty decent on the boards because everybody played manly basketball and CRASHED the boards.

Hopefully, Isaiah's shoulder is better tomorrow as we finish the tourney against Hoops4Christ. So far, the 17U's been fun to watch. You guys are doing pretty solid out there, and we're still a long way from where we want to be. But we'll get there. 80 Or Bust this year...

Tuesday: 17U vs. Hoops4Christ, 5:00 pm. Warmups 4:00 pm, Aiea District Park Gym (outside court).

15U tourney: Who's in?

Need a head count ASAP on 15U.

The PAA 15U Tournament is a four-day event, April 1, 2, 8 and 9 (Mondays/Tuesdays). Four games only. Our numbers are low again. We had only 6 before the PAA League, then we ended up with 16 as we started. Now we're back to 6 or 7 players (or less) again. So I need to know who is committed to working and practicing together. We need that 5-on-5 at practice to get to the next level. Who's in?

13U loses to Tar Heels in semis

13U run in the PAA playoffs has come to an end, lost to Tar Heels 43-35 this morning. We were in the game all the way, but this was a case of wanting it too badly. We made a LOT of unforced turnovers with bad passes, missed some easy shots. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels executed and avoided a lot of turnovers. Overall, great hustle by our guys, but all the mistakes were costly. This is what will build us up and make us a better team. Props to the Tar Heels. They made the championship game.

I wish we'd won, not just for a chance at the title, but so our guys could play one more game together. We had almost everybody today, playing full force. Tanielu and Chris were there and we had Kyle back.

Now we wait to find out if NJB All-Net will let us play. We're on their wait list for 13U and 15U. Tomorrow (Monday), 17U plays the Canadian team, 5 pm, at Aiea gym, then 17U plays Hoops4Christ on Tuesday, 4 pm. The 17U is already in the NJB All-Net League, which begins on Apr. 5, and they'll start playing in the Aiea 17U league this Wednesday. (Schedule to be released.)

Just finished practice (17U) at McCully gym. Good turnout, got a LOT of shooting in.

13U finishes 3rd, 17U pretty good

Interesting day of basketball for the Thunder. Our 13U struggled in the Aiea Tournament semifinals and got spanked by Lanakila 54-21. We started out OK, but over time, their physical on-ball defense wore us down.

There was a big reason for that. We're just not used to the forearm on us as we handle the ball, and Lanakila did this well. As a coach, I've always instructed our guys to move their feet, get in position and keep all hands off.

This worked against us today with a pair of officials who called the game like a rugged high school game. They were fair in the sense that they called the same game both ways. But unlike just about every age-group official I've seen for the past three years, they allowed the forearm shiver action, and we were just not prepared for that — especially with Kyle gone for the day (church).

In the end, it's about coaching and preparing our guys for any scenario. What I learned from talking with both officials, as well as Lanakila's coach, is that 1) we need to be able to adjust and use the same forearm "ride" in our man-to-man defense when officials allow it, and 2) I have to teach all our guys to play on-ball defense both ways.

There's hands-off on-ball defense, which I've found necessary because age-group referees are usually by the book about hand checking of any kind (hands, forearms, etc.). Then there's today's situation, when we really could've done the same thing to Lanakila. If we had, we probably would've changed the entire game. They weren't stronger than us. They just took advantage of the situation.

It's a painful, but useful lesson for me as a coach. Kali‘a's absence was a definite factor. He was a force inside against Lanakila, but when his heart condition flared up, he sat down for the rest of the tournament. I don't know if he'll be back any time soon, but I like him. He's a quiet guy with great basketball IQ, can score inside with either hand and hit the open 3. But health is top priority. Get well soon, Kali‘a!

The 13U came back in the third-place game and beat the Sharks 43-34. It wasn't easy. We were tired, the Sharks hit a lot of open shots, and we had to work really hard to push the lead to double digits in the second half. Their coach is my brother's bro-in-law, and their hot-shooting point guard, Kai, is his son. Kai would've played with us (as well as Jalen, their lefty slasher) if they hadn't put a team in the 12U league and this 13U tourney.

We've learned one thing for sure: facing against 12U competition is a lot different from 13U competition. But everybody embraced the challenge and we did pretty well, 4-1 overall in the tourney. I feel good about every game; we'll learn a lot. Even the forfeit win, which was originally a loss to Kupaa. They were older than us, but we hung in there to the end. It makes us stronger, every battle, win or lose. You guys were awesome. Not perfect. Just awesome.

In the late afternoon, the Aiea Goodwill 17U Tournament tipped off. We played Lanakila tough for a half (24-22), then they took control in the second half and beat us 53-40. It was a bright light for me. Though we were missing several guys, we had enough to stay close. Kaelen and Mike were very strong in the paint, blocking a LOT of shots, which is something we've never done against Lanakila before. Bryson got our late first-half rally going with a string of 3-point bombs.

Overall, our shooting was off, probably due to rust. When we get our shooting strokes back, we'll do much better. Lanakila was the best team in the state last year, winning every tournament here, winning the ‘Iolani Summer League, rolling in the mainland tourney in Vegas (Super 64) before losing in the top tier. And we're right there with them, just a few plays away from being at that level.

So I'm optimistic. Very optimistic. Optimistic enough to start thinking about summer travel. We just need to keep improving, building chemistry.

Sunday is no rest day for us. The 13U plays at 9:15 am, Koko Head gym, in the PAA playoffs. Then the 17U and 15U have practice at McCully Gym, 11:00 am.

13U in championship bracket

Thunder 13U had a good night at the Aiea Tournament. A close win over the Ewa Tigers (40-37) and a solid win over Homegrown (33-18). Playing back-to-back games was a challenge, but we were 10 strong and that was a huge reason we finished strong.

Because our game with Kupaa on Wednesday was ruled a forfeit win for us, we finished first in our pool. We play on Saturday, 11:15 am, in the semifinals. If we win, the title game is at 1:30 pm. The boys played well overall, and they played together through the ups and downs. That's what makes it fun for me, seeing our team play hard from start to finish, every single guy.

Our bench was a major factor in the wins. They played well and played poorly in the first game. Second game, they basically controlled the game for the last several minutes of the first half, which allowed our first unit to rest a lot. When the subs can extend a lead, that's always a total plus.

Having Big Micah and Ryan on the second unit is a super advantage for us. That's basically two guys who can start giving a boost to our team at one of the most vulnerable times in a game, when both coaches are using subs. It was their defense, on-ball pressure and rebounding that made the most difference, along with Kali‘a in the middle playing strong, physical ball. We also had Javan and Felcris playing very, very good defense. That was tough five and I still think they would give our first five a good battle.

Jared's strength at the point allowed Kyle to play a lot more in the post, getting easier looks and playmaking opportunities than he had in the first game yesterday. Kalai was outstanding on the top of the press again, and his decision-making with the ball in the post is a key to our offense. He knows when to find our shooters on the 3-point line, and they usually deliver. Little Micah had a good offensive night, but his defense was excellent. Josh was smarter tonight, staying out of foul trouble, getting deflections, hitting some timely 3-point bombs.

Team-wise, our defense was very good tonight. Let's keep it up when we play in the PAA League playoffs on Friday (Koko Head gym, 8:15 pm) and the Aiea Tournament semifinal on Saturday.

It was a long two days for the tourney director, Rob Godinez III. He had to deal with complaints from other teams, then had to draw a line and enforce the Sept. 1 cutoff date. That meant we lost Jerry for the rest of the tourney (he still came tonight and cheering the boys on from the bench), but other teams lost many more players. The team we lost to yesterday, Kupaa, even dropped out of the tourney. That led to our schedule change, playing two games tonight instead of one. It gives us a bye tomorrow, which means "only" one game (PAA playoff).

Whatever the case, I'm just glad we have a tourney to play in for our 13U team. Having a strong 12U unit just prepared us even more for any challenges this week and beyond.

I just got home from Aiea, so I haven't had time to finalize our 17U active and reserve rosters for this weekend's 17U tourney at Aiea. I'll have that posted by tomorrow morning. 17U had a solid workout this afternoon at Makiki Park after a short meeting. Waiver forms were passed out.

BIG MAHALO to Auntie Claire for bringing a huge pile of chicken wings. That was awesome. It was gone in a few minutes!

17U meeting, 13U game day!

17U meeting/practice at Makiki Park 3:00 pm today. If you can't make it, let me know 551-1054.

13U, day two of the Aiea Tournament, we play Ewa Tigers 5:45 pm. Let's have some fun!

Got my car back from the mechanic. Not good news. It was leaking oil already (I didn't know) before last night's problem. On the hunt for a new (used) car. Gonna rent one out this afternoon. Who lubs air con?

13U: Bring birth certificate copy

Need birthdates for these guys: Ryan Higashionna, Jerry Killion, Joshua de Jesus, Javan Montiho, Kalai Kuia, Felcris Jay Corpuz, Micah Tong and Kali‘a Mielke.

Aiea tournament said they're getting questions from other coaches/parents about our ages. Plus, I didn't have time to fill out the roster form properly, so there are missing birthdates.

Please e-mail/text/call me with the info by Thursday morning so I can clarify this issue with the tourney director, Rob Godinez III, right away. Mahalo everybody!

UPDATE Wednesday, 11:10 pm - PLEASE BRING A COPY OF YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE TO THE TOURNAMENT ON THURSDAY. If you don't have a BC, a passport will do. This will eliminate any of the complaints by the other teams. Thanks everyone.

Aiea 17U tourney schedule

Aiea 17U Goodwill Tournament schedule:
Saturday, Mar. 23
4:00 pm Thunder vs. Lanakila

Monday, Mar. 25
5:00 pm Thunder vs. Bev Facey (Canada)

Tuesday, Mar. 26
4:00 pm Thunder vs. Hoops4Christ

Active and reserve rosters to be determined Thursday night. All 17U are expected to attend the meeting and practice on Thursday, 3:00-4:30 pm at Makiki Park. Please call me at 551-1054 if you cannot attend.

Wednesday: 13U, 15U lose

Good hustle, but two losses tonight. 13U lost to Kupaa on a 3-point shot at the buzzer, 27-25. 15U lost to 808 West 39-34.

13U will play Ewa Tigers tomorrow (5:45 pm) at the Aiea 13U Tournament. We are 0-1 in pool play with two games left, which means we need two wins to qualify for the championship bracket (Saturday). One game at a time, we'll be all good.

15U PAA season is pau. Lot of potential in the 15U, but the lack of practice time, guys not showing up, hurt us. For whatever reason, when some players hit 15 or 16, they decide to stop practicing. That's the difference between our older teams and our younger ones (12U/13U, two championships in less than a year).

Hopefully, the 15U can get in sync and take the game to heart a lot more in the upcoming NJB All-Net League.

Thanks Coach Roy and Coach Larry for taking charge. I had to work in the afternoon and didn't get to the Aiea tournament until the second half. Then on the way to Kilauea gym, my car broke down on Red Hill and I finally got home just now. Car is at the shop, hope it's only the alternator or timing belt. Probably have to rent a car tomorrow...

Video: Potluck for 12U, Coach Roy

Fun, mellow day at Ala Moana Beach Park to celebrate the 12U's Aiea League championship and Coach Roy's birthday. His wife (Kyle's mom) made SO MUCH ONO FOOD. nom nom nom...

Update, Wednesday: PHOTOS.

17U meeting, practice Thursday

MAKIKI PARK, Thursday 3:00 to 4:30 pm. All 17U please attend. We'll update on the weekend tournament and the upcoming Aiea and NJB All-Net Leagues. If you haven't been to any practices yet, this is a must. We'll try to schedule more weekday workouts from this point, when the schedule permits.

If you can't attend, call me 551-1054 before practice. Thanks guys. Let's have a fun year, my fellow hoopaholics.

17U tourney set

17U: tourney with Canadian team

One of the NJB All-Net coordinators has asked if we'd be interested in playing in a four-team 17U tourney with a Canadian team. The tourney would be held on the evenings of Friday, March 23; Monday, March 25; Tuesday, March 26.

Entry fee is $175, not bad at all. The only conflict might be on Monday. If our 15U reaches the semifinals of the PAA League, we would play on Monday night, March 25.

But I'm willing to chance that we can work out any time conflicts. It would be worth it to play someone different.

Monday Workday

Mahalo to Coach Heo and Coach Bo for getting practice started and running. Took awhile for me to finish work and make it there. We were 12 strong tonight, including Tai and Dan (17U). The boys got a lot of shooting and press work done, then we worked on halfcourt offense, inbound plays and more shooting. Solid work by the Thunder.

Next practice, Tuesday, 6:00 pm, Kalakaua. Need the 17U and 15U to show up in force so they can scrimmage and get some chemistry going. 15U has a playoff game on Wednesday. 17U starts playing in Aiea League on March 27. WE LUB THIS GAME!

St. Francis summer league: We're in

Update, Sunday, 8:20 pm - St. Francis has confirmed that we are committed to their summer varsity league. Because of our commitment to the Kalani Summer League, St. Francis will schedule us for 4:00 pm games on each date.

St. Francis has a beautiful new gym so it'll be cool to be there playing in their first-ever summer league. The proximity is nice (Manoa), too. But the 4:00 time means we need to get transportation coordinated earlier than usual, which can be tough when so many dads and moms work at that time of day.

We'll figure it out, get the car pools organized and have a lot of fun playing in TWO high school summer leagues (17U).

Sunday Funday Potluck

Great time at Ala Moana Beach Park with the Thunder parents and 12U ballers today. It was a fun, relaxing way to celebrate their championship in the Aiea 12U League.

Plus a good workout this morning for the 17U/15U, some new players, it was awesome, actually. Thank you, parents, for all your hard work bringing the kids to the potluck picnic, making the food, bringing tables and tents and everything. Mahalo to Mark for bringing the kayak again.

I'll post some photos and video later, after I finish work late tonight. More great memories for a very memorable group of kids and families. WE LUB THIS GAME!

St. Francis summer league update

St. Francis Summer League asking for a yes or no on their Wed/Fri/Sat league (May 15-31). I'm leaning toward yes even though we will have some scheduling conflicts with the Kalani Summer League (May-July, Wed/Fri nights).

PAA 15U, 13U playoff dates switching

PAA asked just now if we could switch our 15U playoff game from Friday to Wednesday, and flip the 13U playoff game from Wednesday to Friday. I said OK. The revised schedule will be released later tonight. So ... 15U get ready for playoff action on Wednesday night! WE LUB THIS GAME!

Forfeit win for Thunder 13U

Forfeit win for Thunder 13U over 808 West. They didn't have enough players, so they had a 14-year-old guy (#32) suit up. We didn't know this was going on, though, and we played through the game like normal. (Close loss.) We played so sloppy today, but a game is a game and we'll learn from it. Even if it's technically an exhibition and doesn't "count".

It's really interesting how much better we are with Jerry and/or Kalai or Tanielu or Chris there. Having that strong rebounder/defender under the basket makes a huge difference for us. When Jerry arrived late in the game (from his other game), he grabbed a bunch of offensive rebounds immediately. Winning today against a team using an older kid would've been nice. I liked our hustle and grit. No quit in us.

But boy, do we need to clean up some mess. Working on left-handed drills (everything) at every practice! Room to get better as we enter the Aiea 13U Tournament (Wed-Sat).

Video: 15U vs Imua

15U's final game of the PAA season. A lot more notes in this video than usual.

Watch, learn, improve.

PART 1 PART 2

Friday, March 15, 2013

Invited to St. Francis league, but...

Oh maaan . . . St. Francis just invited us to their summer league (varsity). Their games will be Wed/Fri/Sat from mid-May to early June. Now we might have too many leagues for 17U. There's also Kalani Summer League starting in May (Wed/Fri).

Before those leagues, we have starting in early April, NJB All-Net (Tue-Sun). Starting March 27, Aiea 17U (Wed/Fri), which ends by late April/early May.

As long as the Thunder 17U have the HUNGER, DEDICATION, SKILL and TALENT as a team, we're going for as much as we can. Same goes for 15U and 13U/12U. I know we have these in our 13U/12U (two championships in the past year). 15U and 17U, we'll see. I am optimistic.

15U falls to Imua

15U/17U practice
Sunday, 11 am, McCully Gym; 4 pm, Makiki Park (especially for the guys who can't come to practice on Sunday morning.

13U/15U/17U practice
Monday, 6 pm, Kalakaua
Tuesday, 6 pm, Kalakaua

IF YOU CANNOT MAKE PRACTICE, CALL ME (551-1054). IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CALL ME (551-1054) before 5 pm (Mon/Tue).

Thunder 15U lost to Imua tonight, think the final was 45-35 (or close to that). All our losses in PAA 15U were close, or at least close until late in the second half. Thunder 15U finished 3-4 with just a few weeks together. A lot of hustle and effort, but it takes time to get chemistry.

I'm hoping the team stays together and PRACTICES together to gain that trust in each other. We also need to LISTEN better. When there's a certain offensive set we need to run — Imua used a 1-2-2 all game long — we need to stick with it and not freelance. We WILL learn to trust each other and our coaches. Next time, we'll exploit that high post on EVERY possession, not just once in a while.

Basketball IQ takes time to develop and I'm willing to be patient — to a point — as long as everyone is hustling and playing fast, physical basketball on every inch of the court.

Next 15U game is Monday, April 1, in the PAA tournament. Be at practice, be focused and be prepared to build each day. I like our potential in 15U. But I will not be content until we commit to working hard every day and trusting each other each day. Until we run plays correctly on a consistent basis. Until we play smart, aggressive defense on a consistent basis. Those things are getting better, and that's more important to me than wins and losses.

Take care of the fundamentals and the victories will be the result. WE LUB THIS GAME!

Part 1 Part 2

PAA 15U tourney update

The tourney is now a four-game format at $200 in a span of just two weeks — or actually, eight days, Mondays and Tuesdays in April. The dates are April 1, 2, 8 and 9.

The league said they are taking the first eight teams, who will be split into separate pools. After round-robin play (three games), teams will be matched up for one game (1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.) on the last night.

We're going to play. After last night's game against Kalihi Valley, I see a group of guys who really want to play well, who want to trust their teammates. We can always live with mistakes if teamwork is there. It doesn't hurt that the entry fee is much less now (originally $300 for five games).

Note: There is a strong possibility that the 15U roster, like the 17U roster, will be revamped as we launch into NJB All-Net and Aiea League seasons.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

13U wins, 15U loses

A lot of lessons for both the Thunder teams tonight. The 13U had to fight off a tough Hoops4Christ team for a close win. 15U was close until the end against Kalihi Valley and lost by about 10. (I'll post the scores after the game videos load up and I can see the actual scores.)

13U did a nice job of staying focused and hustling, but there were a lot of boo-boos with making decisions when H4C started pressing us fullcourt in the final few minutes. We discussed this after the game and I'm hoping we all learn from this. We nearly gave the game away because of basic flaws in execution. It's on me to make sure everybody follows instructions, and when that does not happen, as a coach it's my responsibility that we have players who are prepared to execute and play smart.

But we made enough plays and made enough free throws — Kyle hit two foul shots in the final seconds to open the lead to four points and ice the win. That was gritty. Hoops4Christ has nice, talent and height on its 13U team. We'll see them again next week in the Aiea 13U tournament. I'm looking forward to another good challenge from them if we meet them.

The 15U played fairly well for most of the game against Kalihi Valley. Coach Roy ran the rotation and game plan very much like the last game (a win over Kalakaua). The difference this time was Kalihi Valley is taller, bigger and quicker than most of the teams in the 15U division. They've played together for awhile and their chemistry was better than ours, us being a team that's been together three weeks.

Coach Roy really put a lot of trust into our Tigers (McKinley) and we made a lot of turnovers, especially in the final several minutes. This was a winnable game, but it's clear Kalihi Valley played smarter. The video will be up by tomorrow night (or Friday) and we'll all get to see what I mean.

The most obvious flaws:

1. Lack of organization offensively against KV's man defense. This is where the lack of practice time together hurt us.

2. Lack of boxing out. This is more mental than physical. It's a mentality, a matter of being serious about making contact and establishing position BEFORE every shot is taken, not afterward. We're getting a little better. And with Max on the bench in the final minutes, we were really hurting for a physical presence on the floor.

3. Help-side defense. We had none late in the game. They had guys driving through one, two, three of us and nobody slid over to stop the ball. This happened at least twice in the final minutes, and it was frustrating to see how nobody was willing to stop the ball, take a charge or at the very least, foul the guy and make him earn the points. Too many of us play soft as jello, weak as paper on defense.

Whether we're playing a bigger or smaller team, that should NEVER happen. It's a mentality, just like boxing out, and right now, our guys are far too much finesse-oriented.

We'll work on these things at practice and get better. I can promise that.

NEXT UP: Practice, Kalakaua, tomorrow (Thursday), 6:00 pm. We'll get a LOT of shooting in, just like this past Monday, but also work on team defense, boxing out, and establishing position defensively and offensively.

15U plays Imua on Friday, 6:45 pm, Koko Head Gym. I'm expecting a much different Thunder team defensively. The offense will take work, too, but it's defense that we should completely master every night. Offense - shots will fall or not, and sometimes teams have off nights. But defense is constant if we all put our minds and bodies to it.

I would like to see 15U really buckle down and get mentally tougher. I'd like us to play in the PAA 15U tournament (see the earlier post today), but we won't do it unless that mentality becomes a reality. Let's get to work tomorrow night at practice.

Kalani Varsity Summer League

It's official - we've been invited back to play in the Kalani High School Varsity Summer League. We were a fill-in team last year, so I didn't know if we would have a chance to participate again this summer. But Coach Nathan Davis has invited us back, and we're in. Awesome!

The league will begin in May, games on Mondays and Wednesdays. Entry fee is $400. As usual, I'll cover half and the players will chip in for the other half ($20 per player).

Again, for our guys who are playing with their school teams, they will be permitted to play for both squads. When the Thunder plays their school team, the boys will play with their school team. This generosity from the league and Coach Davis was a gift that we appreciated! (Yes, this means that a lot of our guys played for their school team AND the Thunder on the same night. A good life!)

As with the NJB All-Net and Aiea 17U leagues, we will operate with an Active Roster (10 players) and a Reserve Roster (everybody else). Depending how things develop, we'll stick with this or perhaps consider having two teams if costs are under control.

WE LUB THIS GAME!

PAA 15U 'tourney'

Question: PAA is offering a 15U "tournament" to be played once a week (Mondays/Tuesdays). Starts in April. Only five games, $300. That's pricey. I'm willing to pay for half the fee, so the other half has to be covered by each player ($20). Who is in? Age cutoff: must be 15 as of June 1.

I'm not for it or against it. Just want the 15U's feedback. Otherwise, we'll keep practicing on Mondays/Tuesdays. We need it.

Aiea 13U tourney

It's that time again: March Madness tournament time. The Thunder 13U play in Aiea's tournament next week (Mar. 20-23). Here are the teams and schedule, which were released by Aiea Blazers coach Rob Godinez III today.
