Good effort by our 15U/13U tonight in a close loss to Moanalua JV. We were down 13 before pulling within 3 points. We were within 31-28 in the final minutes before losing 40-32. Moanalua took advantage of any mental errors we made, and that often negated the steals we had off our fullcourt and halfcourt pressure.
There were times when we'd get a steal, then turn the ball over right away, and that hurt. Moanalua had a lot more height this time, but we were right there with them. Mick had one of his best games and he is starting to grasp his role as a scorer now. Overall, we did pretty good with a lineup that had some 11- and 12-year-olds (Chris, Tanielu, Kodee), and Sifo (13) also played well.
As Cody said after the game, it was one of the best games we've had when it comes to playing with heart.
The older Thunder lost to Hawaiian Punch 33-27 tonight at the Aiea 18U tournament. They had a rough time. Coach Bo was busy with football and there were just five players minutes before the game began, so I don't know if they actually got to warm up. The halftime score was 9-7. The Punch is a team we beat in NJB All-Net League more than a month ago, but even then it was pretty close.
The 18U tournament resumes tomorrow. We play at 9:45 am, so meet at Aiea 8:45 am for warmups (outside court). We play again at 12:45 pm, then we have a break until our game against Kalani at Kalani's gym. That last game is the final one for the Kalani Varsity Summer League.
To the guys who came with me to Pizza Hut, I apologize for not having dinner for you. Coach hasn't been checking his checking account balance lately and finally, there's no money to buy dinner now. I've got money in another account, but I won't have any spending money until next week (plus pay day), so we're going to have to figure out how to feed you guys this weekend at the Aiea tournament.
Parents, if you can kokua and bring some snacks and food for the boys, that would be hugely appreciated. Or just have your sons bring food with them to the tournament. Thank you, everybody!
Update Saturday, 12:15 am: Mahalo to Coach Roy (Kyle's dad) for all his help, picking up Tanielu and Chris and bringing them to practice every day, then taking them home sometimes. Coach Roy fed about six of the boys tonight and got them home. Thank you, Roy!
Thanks also to the parents who brought food (pizza, cookies, refreshments) all season long. The boys will never forget your generosity.
