Thunder traditions: Work hard, play fast, back up your teammates, help your opponent off the floor, daily drills to put your dreams and goals into action. Move forward and leave the past in the past. We did most of that at practice today. Good work. Getting better every day, one shot, one dribble, one defensive stand at a time.
I lub this game!
It is, in essence, the original Beautiful Game. While the design is wonderful DNA, the guts of the system is work ethic. Like anything else, nothing worth working for is acquired without blood, sweat and tears, and not necessarily in this order.

This week's schedule
We got an updated schedule from NJB that provides info on the next few weeks. They will provide the final part of the season schedule after the next few games.
Schedule
Monday, 4:30 pm - Practice. All hands on deck!
Tuesday - No practice. Get in your 200 shots (3-pointers, pull-up jumpers, layups, ballhandling).
Wednesday, 4:30 pm - Practice.
Thursday - No practice. Work your game!
Friday - 15U game, 6:30 pm, Kaimuki Rec Gym. Be there by 5:30 for warmups on the outside court. (I work that day, so please be sure you know how to get there if you've never been there before.)
Friday - 16U vs. Lakeside, 6:45 pm, Aiea gym. Be there by 5:45 for warmups on the outside court. (I work that day, so Isaiah, Mick, Alleck, early pickup at 3 pm for the ride.)
Saturday, 11 am - Shooting practice, Makiki Park.
Saturday - 15U game, 8 pm, Palolo Gym. Be there by 7 pm. (I work that night.)
Sunday, 3 pm - Shooting practice, Makiki Park. Pizza!
This is the first time we've had two games in two age divisions at the same time. Bummers! But if we have volunteers to shoot video, I'll provide the cameras and pick them up after the games when I'm pau work. (This is the first time we've had three teams in the same season, so not too surprising.)
Busy weekend ahead. Let's prepare!
Injury list: Kaelen (knee), Chance (wrist), Kenny (ankle). Prayer for healing that is complete and swift. Bless these kids!

Weekend wrap
The weekend is history. Good work by the Thunder 17U/16U with three close wins in three days over Kalihi Valley, Rising Stars and Palama. Enjoy the victories and be ready to work on your game every day. Each of you know what your strengths and weaknesses are, but one factor is always constant: your willingness to improve. Nobody can stop you from getting better every day but yourself. As a team, the more we work together, the better we get. Much better.
Push yourself. Be better tomorrow and next week and next month. There is no limit to how high you can go as a player and as a team. It starts there.
Run the stairway. Run the hill. Run the park. Lift weights. Drill yourself. Shooting. Ballhandling. Free throws. Post moves. 3-pointers. It's what you do when nobody's watching that fortifies your game.
Are you hungry?
Team-wise, plenty to work on this week at practice. We had some serious defensive lapses on Sunday against Palama. That will be corrected.
Good workout Sunday afternoon with John, Felix, Yong, Jake and Brent. We got in work on shooting mechanics, low post footwork and post passing.
Big mahalo to Coach Larry for stepping up on Sunday with Coach Bo busy at work. Mahalo also to Kaelen's mom for bringing pizza on Saturday, and to Cody's dad for bringing pizza and fruit on Sunday. And also big thanks to the Ogosos for always bringing water and drinks to the games.

Two down, one to go
Nice work today, Thunder 17U! (48-47 over Rising Stars.) Getting better at the little things, one day and one game at a time. It's the little things that make the difference. Learn and grow.
Tomorrow, our third game in three days for the 16U/17U crew. I like what I see, little improvements along the way. We're getting there, gang.

One down, two to go
First of three games for the weekend has passed. Good effort against Kalihi Valley, boys. It wasn't pretty, but we made enough plays on defense (a lot of steals, but sometimes guys were too slow getting back on defense) and hit just enough shots to get past a good team. We've been fortunate to win. We just haven't improved a whole lot in one month. It's like this...
The rate of your improvement as a team will depend on how often you practice together as a team and on your own time. It's that simple.
You will become a very good team IF you come to practice AND put in the daily work to become a truly good player on off days. No excuses. At least 200 shots (3s, mid-range pull-up jumpers, layups), plus 50 free throws, every day. Can you do it? Do you want to become a very good player and a very good team? Or is it OK to let other teams outrebound us? Or outshoot us at the line?
Are you content to be slightly better than average? Or do you have the courage to strive for greatness?
That's my challenge to you.

Windy Monday scrimmage
That wind was crazy. It came, it went, it came back, it left. We couldn't work on shooting drills much at all today, but we got lots done and plenty of conditioning in. Still pounding away on the box-out drills, especially with our big men having inconsistency with executing, paying attention, being properly positioned. It starts with attention to detail and finishes with a willingness to be physical, move the feet and battle.
Once we got that straightened out (for today at least), we scrimmaged. It was probably the best comeback in an intersquad scrimmage since last summer when Christian Akana hit a tying 3 from the corner with a few seconds left before Drew Viena launched a fullcourt toss that was all-net. That was at the Stevenson Middle School court.
This time, the orange team was down nine points, chipped it to 42-34 with 2 minutes left. Then Kaelen hit an open trey from the right wing. The white team missed a free throw (I think) and Jared hit a wide-open 3 from the left corner to cut it to 42-40. Then came a steal off the press and Jared hit a putback to tie it at 42-all with 13 seconds left.
Unfortunately, there was confusion about the score and Orange fouled with 10 seconds left. Kency hit one of two free throws to give White the lead again. Orange got one shot off before time expired. Kaelen's 17-footer from near the elbow was long. That was fun, even seeing Kaelen and Cody flat on the court in agony over losing.
The final 2 minutes were special because Jared has been working hard on his perimeter shot and Kency has been working hard on his free throws. That's how we do it, one day at a time, rep after rep, just getting better and better. Nothing will stop you but yourself. It's up to you.
I lub this game.

New week ahead
Solid work today at practice, Thunder! Reps, reps, reps. Today was 3-point shooting drill, just working out the kinks and getting back to fundamentals for an hour plus. Good job guys!
Oh ... Thunder 17U beat the Owls 40-36. Getting better every day, every week, one step at a time. Lots of room for improvement. So looking forward to practice Monday. I lub this game!

Sunday, 3 p.m. — Practice. More shooting, ballhandling. Maybe scrimmage.
Monday, 4:30 p.m. — Practice.

Saturday scrimmage cancelled
Just got a call from NJB All-Net League. The team that was going to scrimmage us (15U) this morning at Palama Gym cancelled. They have a game in the afternoon and decided to cancel. I'm glad the league considered us for a fill-in game when their schedule opened up for 10 a.m. It would've been a good opportunity for us to play more and get better.
But we'll still practice this afternoon, 3 p.m., at Makiki Park. A lot of shooting and ballhandling work to be done. And, of course, pressbreaker.
I lub this game.

Friday: Two games pau
Friday, 11 pm: Just got back from two Thunder games. 16u had its ups and downs, pulled out a tough win over H4C1. So many things to work on, just hoping we get there one day at a time, just improve 1% each day. We got caught in traffic on the way to Aiea (from Kilauea gym). Good post-game meal with some of the boys and Coach Bo. Camaraderie, brotherhood ... it's all good!

Sunday night quiet time (adds 17U video)
Posts from Facebook earlier today.
Congrats to the 15U on today's 27-26 win over Wahiawa. Good bounce back from yesterday's loss, and a really improved defensive effort by everybody. Two weeks ago, Wahiawa beat us by 30 in a scrimmage. What a turnaround. Keep working together, Thunder! Coach John, thank you for filling in for Coach Bo. Practice 4:30 Monday. I lub this game!
Thunder: You guys were asking how Chance is doing. His mom said so far, so good today. He sees a specialist tomorrow (Monday). So far, just clean breaks on his wrist, no damage to the elbow. Keep praying that he has a smooth recovery and healing. Chance, we missed you today, bruddah! You would've had fun. But be patient, you'll be back in the groove 100% at the right time.

Walking wounded
Prayers go out to Chance Maghanoy, who broke his right wrist yesterday near the end of our 15U game with OTB. He went up for a block and landed on his wrist after colliding with the shooter. Me, JJ, Jackson and Alleck visited Chance at Kapiolani Hospital, where doctors told him he broke the wrist cleanly in two places.
Please pray for Chance. I hope for a quick, smooth healing so he can get back to doing the things he loves: training for football, playing basketball and everything else. Docs expect him to be out for about six weeks. His parents will take him to a specialist on Monday for an evaluation.
Kenny Fujioka is still out with a badly sprained ankle that was aggravated in a game last week. Kenny tried to come back, but the ankle just wouldn't hold up. Pray for Kenny, too. We miss you out there, man!

Learning along the way
Great defensive battle. Huge props to the Aiea Blazers, winning against H4C and our Thunder in back-to-back games. Our boys were up 10 at the half, but lost 40-36. Still optimistic. Very optimistic. We're going to get better every day and, if enough guys make it to practice consistently, develop really good chemistry ... the kind that the Blazers have!

16 strong today at Thunder practice. Got a lot of work in for the newer guys, the younger guys. 15U still didn't have a full squad, still a long way to go before we're cohesive on both ends. A lot of good effort and mental toughness today by the young guys.

BEGINNING IN EARLY JUNE
> CAL (15U, 13U) league
> Possibly Pa‘a league (16U)
> Looking for summer leagues for our 17U
We will also have car washes, cookie sales and other fundraisers to cover costs along the way thanks to Auntie Char. Everyone's kokua is a blessing!
Uniforms: Each player is responsible for his jersey. Please do NOT toss them in the dryer. We want jerseys to last a long time so we don't spend too much money too often. Shorts have been a problem in the past, disappearing and not being return, so please return the shorts after every game. I'll do that laundry and bring them back for each game. This also ensures than all of our teams have the same game shorts.
If we raise enough money through fundraisers, there's a chance the kids can keep their uniforms. I hope we do!
Practices: Normally, we go Mondays and Wednesday, 4:30 p.m., at Makiki Park. If I or Coach John or Coach Larry are available (not working that day), we try to go Tuesday and/or Thursday. Saturday 11 a.m. is also practice time. Sundays, 4 p.m., is shooting practice, light workout with pizza. Mahalo to Coach John, JJ and family for the awesome Pizza Hut discounts!
Any questions, don't hesitate. Call me at 551-1054 or reach me on Facebook.
Finally, thank you, Coach Bo for stepping up and becoming a coach, mentor and guide for our Thunder. And thank you for being a friend, indeed!

Weekend is here
Congrats to the 16U for another win in the Aiea League. Mind you, that was a very young, inexperienced team (Hoops 4 Christ II) we played, and though we won by 23, it doesn't feel complete. But there's no disputing this: you guys hustled and played hard. Those are the most basic common denominators to success.
Things to work on this weekend (and beyond):
• Pressbreaker. It didn't happen at all while we were being pressed in the second half, and the turnovers resulted. Two defenders try to trap you? Slow down, back up if necessary and do the math. One of your teammates is wide open.
• Halfcourt man offense execution. Needs more work. We're getting there.
• Boxing out? Almost nonexistent from a team standpoint. We will work on this much more.
Pluses?
• Good fullcourt pressure. Not great (yet), but definitely good. Too many hand checks, and we could/should have made more traps at midcourt on tired dribblers.
• Nice passing on many possessions against their zone and man defenses. Isaiah and Mike, you guys connected on the entry passes beautifully to start the game. Great job of recognizing the mismatch.
• Mick and Alleck connected on a perfect backdoor (Princeton) cut and bounce pass. We need this all the time when defenses start overplaying the lanes. Make them pay!
• Solid free-throw shooting, including Chase and Mick.
• Rebounding. Second team did fairly well, particularly Kaelen. But again, a lot of guys did not box out.
Schedule
Saturday, 11 a.m. Practice
Sunday, 2 p.m. 17U game, Palolo gym. Be there by 1 p.m.
Sunday, 4 p.m. 15U/16U/17U, shooting and ballhandling workout, and pizza party, Makiki Park.
Monday, 4:30 p.m. Practice
Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Update: 15U stays as is
I checked with NJB on the roster since Max asked to add two of his friends for 15U, but the league is sticking by its rule. No additions after the first game. It's a tough one because the league wants to have the same rule apply to all teams, and they know we're low in numbers for 15U.
But we had enough time before the first game to add names to the roster, and I added all the names you guys gave me. Next time, we need to collaborate better.
Whatever the case, we have enough players. We just can't afford anyone else to drop out/quit, or get hurt, or get grounded.
The 16U/17U are doing fine with numbers. We get CHOKE players.

Practice Monday, Wednesday
THUNDER ALERT: practice Monday and Wednesday. Coach Bo will be there both days. We might practice on Tuesday and/or Thursday if Coach John and/or Coach Larry are available. 16U plays Friday night. 17U plays Sunday.
Good scrimmage and workout today for the 15U. (The other team forfeited.) Got a lot of reps done today, a lot of work on low-post zone defense. Communicado! And a lot of pizza. Mahalo to Brent's mom for providing the refreshments. I lub this game.
