Maui was nice and the track and field state championships were busy, busy, busy. Fun to cover. I even shot video of the record-breaking pole vaults by two Baldwin girls. But it was hard to be away while our Thunder 15U played. I hated missing the games, but my only consolation is that Coach Daniel is very capable and our team works hard at every practice. Yesterday's loss to OTB was a great demonstration of heart. I heard you rallied from 18 down and almost pulled off a comeback win. That would've been sweet after the win just 18 hours earlier (Friday night). I'm proud of you guys!
Today, our 17U played the first second-round game. We played Lanakila, the only other unbeaten team. They played well, like a seasoned team with plenty of chemistry. That wasn't a surprise. But we got our offensive flow going, attacked the basket, played smart defense and rallied from 17 down to tie it at 50-all on Christian's amazing 3-pointer in the corner with :08 left. Lanakila hit a 40-foot prayer off the glass at the buzzer to win 53-50. Still, it was a great comeback. I know Carter has said he'd love to play them again, and I agree. We know exactly what Lanakila's weak spots are now. It would be great to face them in the playoffs.
Sorta funny: J.J. reminded me that almost the same exact thing happened a couple of weeks ago at one of our practice scrimmages: 1) Christian hit a sweet 3-pointer from the corner with :03 left, 2) the defense got the ball in quick and Drew launched a 75-footer that banked in as time expired.
Deja vu?
No word on this week's practice schedule yet. I know I have to work on Monday, and my work schedule is going to be finalized later tonight. I do know that our 17U has games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Busy! Not sure yet on the 15U. We'll hear from NJB soon enough.
Most likely, we'll practice Tuesday and Wednesday. Check back here for the official word later tonight.
I love this game.
