Just got my work schedule for the week. Real busy in the afternoons due to tournaments. We'll practice Mon through Wed. I have a 3 pm game at McKinley to cover for work on Wed, then I'll get to practice right away. Saturday, we have a morning practice. Hopefully we get a good turnout.

H1 Thunder 59, Asing Heat 13 (13U)

First game of Aiea 13-Under League is done. We got there early, got the nice bonus of having warmup time in the gym for about 30 minutes before tip-off.
> Good hustle defensively out of our fullcourt and halfcourt defenses.
> Good hustle offensively in fastbreak/transition.
> Good ball movement most of the time.
> Great sportsmanship.
Areas to improve on:
> Boxing out.
> Executing halfcourt sets a little more precisely.
> Conditioning. We had a lot of fastbreak opportunities, but were too fatigued sometimes to run to the corners for those open corner 3s.

We'll work on everything this week during practice. It's always good to have things to improve and work on.

It's a really good start to the winter season, having the scrimmage on Friday at St. Francis and today's first league game. Our returnees were cohesive and energized (mostly) and our new guys are stepping up. It's great to have depth and not have to worry about having enough guys, about the possibility of forfeiting. THANK YOU, PARENTS!

I forgot to get waiver forms signed for Walter and Javan, so please remind me at next practice. Also, we need to collect copies of birth certificates, especially for our new Thunder. If you don't have a U.S. birth certificate, any type of legal identification will probably work.

Friday Funday scrimmage

Great first scrimmage of the winter season this morning at St. Francis. Big mahalo to Coach Peter for inviting us to play his team. We got a lot of reps and saw what our returnees can do, and what our new Thunder have learned.

We did a lot of things well: fastbreak (offensive transition), sharing the ball, finding early open 3-point shots, defensive pressure (fullcourt). We'll get better on trapping and weak-side rebounding out of the Sonic with more practice and games.

Most teams will be taller and bigger than us, so this was a perfect scenario. We have speed, skill and smarts, but they're only good when we use them. Lots to work on, but overall, that was a superb first competition.

Lineup: Ryan, Jance, Jonah, Micah, Chaz, Walter, Felcris, Javan, Colin, Jayden and Gabe. 

Next: Saturday, 10:00 am - Optional shooting practice at Makiki Park. We'll be done by 11:15.

It's just a scrimmage and a few of our new guys won't have uniforms yet. Bring your teal uniform, and if you don't have one, bring a teal or blue shirt.

Wednesday Funday

Good, solid work for almost 90 minutes at Makiki Park. We were 5 Thunder strong, a lot of reps and drills, a lot of work on halfcourt sets, defense and inbounds plays.

Spent a good 10 minutes working on a new play (W). I'm certain we'll be using that play a lot in 13U.

Need uniform help

Until we get our new orders for uniforms in, we need to borrow TEAL uniform sets for Jonah, Thomas and Jance. We need Mediums for all 3, though Large would be OK. Once we get the new uniforms in, you'll get the uniforms back. PLEASE HELPU!

Friday scrimmage?

Coach Peter at St. Francis asked if we could scrimmage their Intermediate team on Friday, 8 am. I'd like to scrimmage, but asking our parents to drive into town that early is asking a lot.

Who wants to scrimmage? If we play, that's good. If we don't, that's good. Otherwise, we'll just practice that afternoon.

Need 15U/17U uniform orders

I've heard from some guys, but I still need EVERYBODY from 13U to 15U to 17U to parents to everybody who wants to order the new (orange) uniform, order the teal uniform (again) or just a jersey (new or teal).

This has to happen quick. The 13U starts playing league this week and a few of them need new uniforms. I'm making one total order for everybody to save on shipping. (Unless you have a few hundred bucks to pay for that.)

All players must have both uniforms. One will be a home uniform. The other is our away uniform.

1. Jersey size
2. Shorts size
3. Jersey number (give me three numbers in case your first choice is taken)
4. $30 per uniform (teal, orange)

If you can't afford, no worries, but PLEASE let me know so I make the order for you.

Again, be happy we're paying 1980 prices for top-of-the-line uniforms and craftsmanship. If we order from the mainland or locally, it'll cost way more and the quality won't be the same. A couple of years ago, we had uniforms with heat-press numbers that peeled off for some guys.

Sunday Funday

Solid workout for 5 Thunder this afternoon at Makiki Park. Cloudy, kind of cool, no wind, perfect. We did a lot of learning on the move with 3-man weave (passing and chemistry), layup drills (basic) and 100-point drill (learning plays on the fly). We got in a solid 75 minutes of work before calling it a day. Nice work, Thunder!

Notes
1. Please check your e-mail for the Aiea League's waiver form. Print, fill out and bring to practice. Also need copies of birth certificate from our new guys. Returning Thunder players, I'll double check on your paperwork.

2. Please chip in and help pay for the $475 entry fee. I am asking parents/players to pay $25 (per player). I'll pay for the remaining half or so. I'm not rich. I'm still paying back loans we used for our mainland and Kona trips. Please kokua if possible. If no can, no can, no worries. We're having fundraisers soon.

3. Please submit $30 for the new uniforms that will be ordered and made within the next few weeks. We need to collect the money NOW, before we make the order. Again, I would love to front the $$ but a'ole kala. No mo' money. So, to get a new uniform (orange), pay $30. If you don't have the teal uniform OR would like to order a new teal uniform because you outgrew it, that's another $30. Please realize that these uniforms (via Gerard Porras' friend in the P.I.) are excellent quality and worth far more than we're paying. We're very fortunate to have Gerard's connection. Uniforms locally or from the mainland cost $70 to $125 and the quality is far, far less. The uniforms from Arthur (Gerard's connection) are SUPERIOR to the local and mainland stuff AND much cheaper. Please help us get the uniforms ordered quickly and make your payment ASAP. Mahalo.

3 strong this afternoon at Makiki Park. No breeze, sun was down. Perfect. 

Micah, Chaz and Jance got a lot of work in, a lot of ballhandling, on-ball defense and shooting drills.
We need to get in sync as a team, build chemistry between our veterans and new players.

Aiea 13U League starts Nov. 30

Got the official word from the league. No referees available, so the first game has been pushed back by one week.
Good news - they found one more team to be the 8th.

Breezy afternoon at Makiki Park. We were 6 Thunder strong today and got a lot of good work in. Did a lot of offensive and defensive framework, getting our newer guys more comfortable and familiar. Lot of 3-on-3 work on our halfcourt basics. Looks like we won't have our first game this weekend, but that's good. Gives us more time to sharpen up and prepare.

Wednesday Funday

Breezy afternoon at Makiki Park. Only 1 Thunder there, but Jance got a solid hour of work done. He's already pretty solid with the jab step/triple threat, quick to the basket. We saw him on Tuesday show a lot of quickness defensively, especially with lateral movement. I think he's going to be tough on our fullcourt press.

Tuesday Funday

A little breezy, sun going down early, winter is upon us. The work is upon us. The fun is upon us. We love this game. LOVE. 

Good workout today, keeping things basic, learning a basic defensive stance, slide drill, fullcourt layup drill (timed), basic man offense options, basic zone offense options. Our new guys are learning step by step. We've got 10 or 11 months of basketball ahead of us until the next month-long break. Our long-timers will lead the way and we'll keep meshing, one day at a time.

Uniform order urgent!

I've heard from only a few of our guys about the new order. We are ordering more TEAL uniforms for guys who have outgrown their original (and also for our new players). We are also ordering an entirely different set of new uniforms, probably orange with white numbers/names. I'm exploring the possibility of white piping on the sides of the shorts and putting Hawaiian style tribal art there. If can, can. If not, no problem. 

BUT WHAT I NEED is everybody's sizes (jersey/shorts) and number requests (at least three numbers). Please respond NOW so we can get the new order sent out and our newest players (13U) can get their own uniforms soon. 

Cost is cheap, cheap, cheap: $30 per set, which is more than half the price of mainland and local stores, and our uniform maker has far better quality fabric and stitching.

Sunday Funday

That was cool. We were 14 strong on Sunday afternoon. Good mix of our older guys, new guys. Always great to have our older guys teaching the new players everything from plays to basic basketball IQ in drills and scrimmage. 

We met up at 3 pm, started around 3:20 and worked on basics until about 6 pm. Longest practice in a long time. Normally, we go 90 minutes max. I'm proud of the guys for being patient and helping our new players take their first steps learning everything from inbounds plays to defense to offense. Long way to go, but it's a good start.

Uniform info needed

OK, time to get sizes, numbers and names for the next order of uniforms. THIS IS FOR ALL OUR PLAYERS from 13U to 15U to 17U.

I'm planning on re-ordering the TEAL uniforms we had this past year. That will make it easier for our uniform makers and I think everybody loved that one.

If your uniform still fits, hang on to that. I'll re-order new TEAL unis for the guys who have outgrown theirs.

ALSO, I'm leaning toward ORANGE as the color for a new set. Why? Some guys asked for it. Also, white is fairly common. I know some of the guys like black, silver, gold, navy blue ... but orange is pretty uncommon and we won't run into problems at games wearing the same color as the other team.

So please send me this info:

>> Size for jersey, size for shorts
>> Number preference - Your top three choices. (If more than one players likes the same number, the player with more seniority gets it.)
>> Name on back (last name is preferred)

Please specify the size with this in mind: Sportsthing makes our uniforms according to THEIR sizes, and their sizes are a little smaller than American sizes. Example: Kali‘a and Chris ordered XXL and their jerseys fit well. But in the US, they'd normally wear XL. (Or used to, they probably grew since they last played.)

So, if a player normally wears Medium, consider ordering a Large. If the size you have on your existing TEAL uniform is perfect, order that size.

The cost of the uniforms and shipping (huge) will be $30 for each set (shorts and jersey). I know this sounds like a lot, but 1) it's much, much cheaper than local shops and mainland shops, and 2) the quality is far, far superior. Check out the stitch lines and quality of fabric. You NEVER get that kind of skill and workmanship locally or from the mainland at just $30. We're very, very blessed that Gerard (Gabe's dad) has helped out so much through his connections in the P.I.

LEAGUE ENTRY FEES ($400 to $600 per) will be covered our upcoming fundraisers: Free-Throw Challenge, Car Wash (pre-sale required or no go). ALL PLAYERS must participate.

Thursday Funday 11/13

What a day. There's nothing else like basketball at the end of a busy school or work day. We were 6 strong today and got a lot of ballhandling, on-ball defense and shooting work in. Finished the last 20 minutes or so with some basic sets for our newer guys and our old guys. Hopefully, we get at least 10 out for the next practice so we can really ball 5-on-5. 

Weather was perfect today: sunny, then cool once the sun went down, just a little breeze. 

Today's lineup: Chaz, Jayden, Colin, Jonah, Micah and Jared. Solid, excellent work, Thunder!

13U Update - Mon Sept 10

We start playing again in less than two weeks. Aiea League is 13U only, must be 13 as of Sept. 1. We're going to need a few more guys.

CAL League starts in early January with their middle-school division - 8th graders. That means Felcris and Big Josh can play.
