A+ for effort

Great effort. Great hustle. No complaints today from me. I know we didn't play perfect basketball, and though we lost all three games (13U, 15U, 17U), there are a lot of bright spots so I feel pretty good.

For the 15U in the loss, it came down to making smart decisions. We didn't make enough. That hurt us. We played good enough to win, but against a good team like the Blue Devils II, they will make you pay if you don't take care of the ball, and we didn't some of the time. I still think Tani had position and the referee should've called a charge in that final minute, but one call is not why we lost. We've just got to play smarter against older teams.

The 13U played valiantly against Boom, but with just 5 players (and Walter, who is 10), we ran out of gas. Boom is deep, and they play well together. If we'd had two or three more players, we could've press all game, and as you guys saw, Boom had major problems with our press when we were fresh.

17U gave the Storm a tough battle. We cut it to 9 in the second half and the starters were gassed after making a great run off our press, hitting 3s. So I put in a whole new group to give the starters a quick rest (and save a time out), but within seconds, the lead went back to 15 after we turned it over a few times and gave their best shooter a wide-open 3.

Their coach, Tim Harrison, has been around a long time, used to coach at Radford and Kailua. His son is one of their best shooters (#21). He's seen our 13U and our older teams. He said afterward that we remind him of the Storm team when they were younger. That's a good sign.

The purpose of the Pippen defense is to take that 3 away, and we did a solid job with that most of the game ... until that moment. By the time our starters got back in, we had to burn a time out anyway. It was disappointing that our bench didn't play smart, but again, we're learning. We're young. The Storm is a seasoned team, a lot of experience and older than us. They've played together for years, so just getting in striking distance late in the game was gratifying. We didn't lie down and give up, so I'm proud of our 17U.

BIG MAHALO to Coach Roy for transporting the 13U boys. BIG MAHALO to Dora and Roland Ogoshi for bringing ice-cold drinks and corn dogs for the team.

17U over Bulldogs

Good grind-it-out 40-36 win over the Bulldogs today at Palama gym. Got a good turnout, 11 strong: Cody, Sierra, Chase, John, Tanielu, Chris, Isaiah, Bryson, Brent, Mick, Alleck and Kaelen. That's a solid group, especially against a team with some solid ballers like the Bulldogs. (I'm glad Jerry wasn't hot from 3-point range today. Kenny's 3-point bank shot ... no comment.)

Though we're out of shape and not playing exactly at the tempo I like, it was still a good team win. We got timely shooting from 3-land from Bryson and Mick, and the press was effective enough to get us some easy shots. Chase got hot from deep later in the second half — set shots rule!

It's not obvious, but having Isaiah back at the point is so valuable. It's the difference between struggling to bring the ball upcourt and scoring easily on Princeton backdoor buckets. Isaiah doesn't have to score 30 points to be a major factor. Those of us who endured the recent 17U blowout losses — you know what I'm talking about.

Defense? Talking to each other, keeping track of the offense's key shooters and rebounders, moving into position early, all those things matter to winning teams. Hustle, positioning, taking the right angles on traps and steals — those matter hugely on the presses. Scoring matters. But if you wonder why some guys stay on the floor a little longer, think about defense and hustle plays. Those never get old, and they make the difference in all close games.

It's roughly 45 days until the high school season begins, so each of you know what needs to be done. What needs to be worked on. Everybody should have a pull-up jumper (with extension vertically). That is a must in any player's arsenal unless he or she wants to collect offensive fouls and ride the bench. Everybody should have a sound battle plan when receiving an entry pass in the low post or high post. For some of us, that means pivoting first without dribbling, reading the defender.

Everybody should be working on perimeter shooting. Mid-range. 3-point range. In the 45 days coming up, it takes only 30 minutes to get 200 shots in at GAME SPEED. (Shooting in slow motion, walking after the rebound, wearing slippers instead of shoes — all that works against you so don't do it like that.) If you dedicate yourself to 30 minutes of shooting (not counting ballhandling, conditioning, pickup games, drills) every day, that's 9,000 shots by mid-November.

If you put in a full hour of game-speed shooting every day whether it's 60 minutes straight or increments of 20 minutes or whatever, then you have 18,000 shots. I'm all for seeing each of you guys becoming reliable, consistent and deadly shooters. Sound dribblers (arm bar, anyone?) Smart passers. (Use your fake, keep the ball over your head in traffic.)

Playing together as a team, running the break successfully, using the pass and dribble and press to inflict our tempo on other teams ... that takes time and practice together. If it happens, it happens. But be sure to make the most of these next 45 days to improve yourself. You'll be happier. Your team will be stoked. Your coach will trust you.

All for the love of the game.

Tuesday practice 3:30-5:00 pm

HEAD'S UP: I'll be at Makiki Park on Tuesday, 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Coach Roy won't be there, so we'll finish early, and I have to go to work after that.

I thought I wouldn't be able to go to practice, but I checked my schedule and I have a short distance to travel (‘Iolani). So come down if you want to get your 200+ shots in.

We got a solid workout today (Monday). A lot of fullcourt work, fastbreak assignment and fastbreak shooting drills, some defensive position and coverage work. A lot of shooting drills and some fast 3-on-3 (nonstop) work in the final hour. That was a good, physical battle: Coach Roy, Coach Larry and John vs. Cody, Randall, Kekai vs. Mike, Chase, Micah.

The Makules (Roy/Larry/John won the first challenge. Then Mike/Chase/Micah won the second one real close. No dead balls except fouls. Your team scores, the ball is alive as the next team gets on the court. Good to see everyone working hard on offense AND defense.

If you missed the earlier post, please note that Friday's 17U game has been changed to Sunday, 4:00 pm at Palolo Gym.

Sweet and sour

(Update: today's scores - Thunder 13U 27, Owls 11. Crush 52, Thunder 15U 49.)

Pretty good day for the young guns. 13U (Ryan, Walter, Tanielu, Chris, Kyle, Kodee, Bill) beat the Owls by about 20. I tried to save their legs for the 15U game that followed immediately, especially with Kyle injured. He hurt his ankle on the first play of the first game.

Today's 15U were: Brent, Sifo, Kyle, Tanielu, Chris, Galia (their cousin), Bill. That was it. I spent half an hour before the game looking for Jerson, and he told me he had a leg injury from playing football. I was concerned for the past week that we wouldn't have enough (and would have to forfeit), but thanks to Bill and Galia, we actually had two subs. Two more players than last week in 15U.

We were close, back and forth, with the Crush until the third quarter. We only have five guys, basically, with Bill (tired out) and Chris/Tani's cousin on the bench. Their cousin is a good athlete, just learning the game. We fell behind by about 10 points, all on little mistakes. Not getting good position on low-post defense. Not getting up on their 3-point shooters soon enough. Turning the ball over on silly passes. Taking off-balance shots in traffic.

All the mistakes are correctible. But we miss Sierra (clinic) and Micah (baseball) a lot. Crush went to a 2-3 zone after the first quarter and we were missing that 3-point shooter to hit the open shots. But we made a run with our presses and got within 4 points with 2 minutes left. But again, mental errors hurt us. We'd already been warned for delay of game — someone grabbed the basketball after we made a basket — when we got a technical after scoring a layup to cut it to 4. So Crush hit two free throws, got the ball back, scored again and we were down 8 just like that.

We got it back to 4 again off our press, but that was it. Final score was 52-49, our second loss in 15U, both times to Crush. We'll learn from it, I hope. Our only guy close to being 15 years old was Brent, who played a good game. But all of us made good plays and all of us made some mistakes. I know everybody was tired in the second half, but I really think now that if we'd gone to Power 10 and 41 earlier, we would've won.

Not a guarantee, but Crush's pressbreaker was not as good as I expected and we really had them on the ropes in those last couple of minutes.

All in all, it was fun to watch most of the time. Learn, advance forward. We're still one of the youngest teams in 15U, and our 13U actually has only one 13-year-old now (Bill). So keep working hard, play smart and let your actions do all of your talking. I don't want to hear ever again from the officials and league commissioner that any of our guys are commenting about calls.

If we play smart, we don't need to get help from anybody else. But we didn't play smart against the Crush on many plays, and they earned the win.

I'm loading up the game videos now. Some of the 13U are at Makiki Park playing and practicing on their own. Kyle will get some therapy for his ankle. I'll be at the park after I get some water and ice for the new cooler.

Could've been better, but the hustle was worthy. Let's go back to playing smart all the time. Learn from our mistakes, work on our weak spots. Most of all, I'd love to see our rosters at 8-9 players for each team so we can go back to pressing and running all day and night.

And finally: Special thanks to the Ogoshi ohana for bringing water and cookies to our 17U game on Saturday. And mahalo to Glenn Ogoso, Mark Berthold and Isaiah Visoria for shooting video this weekend. Also, thanks to Coach Loto and Coach Roy for providing transportation for the boys. Mahalo!

13U: Unbreakable

13U, be ready for the challenge on Sunday (tomorrow). We'll be short handed, but you're used to that by now. We'll be fatigued at some point with the two games (13U and 15U), but you've endured through that since we started in June. We'll be gasping for air while we need defensive stops, but you have gutted out close games and won almost every time.

You even play older teams to help out our 15U and 17U without complaining. You just want to play. You love this game. That's what I'll remember about you guys when this fall season ends.

But for now, be focused and ready. You'll have fun tomorrow. And when we move on to next week and next month and next spring, next summer, we'll have an opportunity to travel and play great teams from around the country, God willing. And you'll remember all of it. The injuries. The drills. The boiling-hot afternoon sun at Makiki Park.

You'll wonder, one day, what drove you to be there every time, working on this sport. Then you'll remember, there's almost nothing as fun as working and playing with your teammates. That's why you dive for that loose ball headed out of bounds. That's why you love it when your mom and dad watch you play. Because there's pure love when it comes to this game. And it will not be the same three or five or ten years from now.

Now is now. And it's a good time to be loved by your Thunder brothers. You love them back. Everybody's a basketball fanatic. It's all good. You'll keep standing there next to your brother in hoops, and the fun will almost never end. No matter what changes or what challenges block the path.

That's why I don't worry about change. We gain great people. We lose great people. We move on. The spirit endures. And we got lots of spirit.

Bittersweet, but ultimately rewarding

17U struggled today against the state's best, Lanakila. I don't mind losing to a team like that, no matter what, as long as we play hard and fast and smart. Some folks might disagree with me, but let's face it. How many teams won the NJB league(s) (I think), won the summer league at ‘Iolani (I think), then won a tournament in Las Vegas? And the second-best team at the Vegas tourney was the Warriors (Kamehameha-Hawaii/Big Island).

So keep your chins up. Keep working. Learn from everything, the wins, the losses. I'd rather face Lanakila every game than blow out a weak opponent. You learn from playing the best, that's one thing I've learned in life. Lanakila's secondary players played well, played together, crisp passes, good movement without the ball, pushed the tempo while we jogged and made sloppy passes while failing to run our pressbreaker consistently.

I'm encouraged. When we run the pressbreaker, we get layups. That's what today's game came down to. And when we travel next summer, we'll only need 9 players who do those things right, the basics. The fundamentals. Working together to make the game easier and far more productive rather than playing selfishly or sloppily.

If we take more than 9 players on the trip, so be it. But I'm saying it now. We don't have to take more than 9 ... if 9 is all we have. 9 guys who play solid, fundamental basketball as a unified group. We were almost there this past spring and early summer when we almost beat Lanakila TWICE.

We'll be a year older by next spring. I expect us to be better. To have more discipline. More speed. More skill. Those who keep working and moving forward will ride the Thunder train. Everybody else will be left behind. A chain is only as good as its weakest link, and I am running out of room for guys who will be weak links come spring time.

Work hard. Play hard. Lub the game. Simple...

17U tops Falcons

17U over the Falcons (and Mike) in the PAA playoffs tonight. It was really good to see the whole family (mostly) back together again. Cody, Kyle, Tanielu, Chris, John, Bryson, Mick, Kaelen, Sierra and Isaiah, plus our new additions from Maryknoll: BJ, Jake, Kekai and Noah. It was a relief to have depth; as of yesterday, we weren't sure if we'd have five or six guys. But the Roosevelt boys made it when conditioning workout was cancelled. If not, the Maryknoll additions would've helped us avoid a possible forfeit.

We won't have this same lineup for NJB All-Net since that league is strict about roster deadlines. Our next NJB game is this Saturday against Lanakila. A full lineup gives us a real good shot. We've had some really tight games with them, and they're the best 17U team in the state. We're still younger than them — most of our 17U are 16-year-olds — but we're maturing, getting stronger and better. Tonight was proof of that. The press was awesome at times.

Thursday, Sept. 20

Updated schedule (Tue nite)

Good workout this afternoon. John, Cody, Chase got their 200+ shots in, game speed, no walking (almost). Ballhandling drills. Low-post drills. 2-on-2, 3-on-3 (after Sierra and Jerson arrived). Got some good, physical work in before the rain hit around 6:30.

We're low in numbers for Wednesday's 17U game, but we'll be ready to play with who we've got: John, Cody, Jerson, Tanielu, Kyle, Chris, Sierra. I hope Bryson makes it. Chase won't be there. Roosevelt guys will be at conditioning or other games (Isaiah). Always make the best and most of your opportunities as a player, as a team.

Meet at Kilauea gym 6:45 (outside court) for warmups. I'll be at Makiki park 4:30 to 6:00 pm if anybody wants to shoot and catch a ride. I LUB THIS GAME!

Iron tough Thunder (updates 17U sked)

(Just added the PAA league schedule update. 17U plays Falcons on Wednesday, see at bottom.)

Ironman Thunder. 13U was eight strong today in a 31-16 win over Hawaii Kai: Kyle, Tanielu, Chris, Kodee, Sierra, Ryan, Kamakani and Walter. Then 15U played a couple hours later, had a bunch of missing guys and had to play only five all game: Tanielu, Chris, Sierra, Kyle and Sifo.

We led Kupaa all the way until the final 3 minutes when everyone was gassed, and Kupaa hit a putback layup at the buzzer. In OT, it was shootout (soccer) style. Our three free-throw shooters against their three. Nobody made a free throw. Then it was our next two guys. Sifo made his free throw, and one of Kupaa's guys hit a FT.

Then it was down to one FT shooter, and since all our guys had already shot, Sifo went back out and swished the FT again. Their guy missed and we won 42-41. The last time we won an OT game in CAL was two years ago when Isaiah and the boys beat the Sharks in the same FT shootout format.

Nerve-wracking ... but fun. Good job everybody. Pizza always tastes a little better after a couple of wins.

17U, let's get to work. I lub this game!

17U falls to Rebelz

Thunder 17U still missing some mainstays —key players, but the fight never ends. We got good effort today from the nine players there in a loss to Da Rebelz. We've had some high-scoring games against them in the past, won some and lost some. This time, they were just too experienced and skilled, but I'd love to see us get another chance to play them. They rely on the 3-point line and 1-on-1 drives; both can be taken away by a smart, aggressive defense willing to step in and take the charge. But that's something we can learn from, and maybe we get to play them in the playoffs.

Today's roster: Cody, Chase, John, Kaelen, Tanielu, Chris, Sierra, Sifo and Bryson.

Tanielu and Chris stayed after the game to get some work done at Palama gym (outside court). Chris is still getting better with his footwork (pivoting) and shot. Tanielu loves to work on his game, and it's paying off. His 3-point shot is pretty solid now, and his lefty layup is getting better. We worked on mid-range/high post and low post this afternoon under that blistering sun. Then Tani made 61 out of 100 free throws. Not too shabby for a 12-year-old.

I'd love to see all of our guys (and girls) keep working every day on their shot, ballhandling ... it just takes 30 minutes to get 200 shots off. There is no substitute for reps and muscle memory, so justdoit!

Weekend schedule

Talked with Coach Roy briefly last night while I was working. Rough night for 17U. No practice today (we're both working late), so get your shots and drills in. The beauty of basketball is you get what you put into it. If you take a month off, guess what happens? You put in a full summer of work every day, wonderful things happen. It doesn't matter if you're 16, 12 or 52.

See you Saturday morning!

Pressbreaker works for those who use it

Rough night against Kapolei. 17U played good in spots, but too much inconsistency with the ball. Pressbreaker - we got easy shots when we ran it. When we didn't run it right, not good. We need to play together and run it right. Trust each other. Not make up stuff along the way and get trapped.

We need to cut when we're away from the ball, slant across the court and get an easy pass from our teammate. That was the biggest reason we struggled tonight. And it shouldn't be. We've worked on pressbreaker a thousand times. But looks like we need to work on it more.

It's not complicated, but a lot of our guys tonight had no clue.

Pass goes to the right side against the press. The guy on the left side, on the other side, cut diagonally across the court. He will always be open because most presses are zone. There will be a gap.

Flip flop it, and it's the same principle. Pass to the left, and the guy on the far right side will cut diagonally through the center of the court for the pass.

Easy enough. We should break the press every time with two or three passes and get layups. All the extra dribbling, nobody cutting, it's all fixable. It's all correctible. So I am optimistic. Running out of patience, a little. But still optimistic.

Tonight's lineup: Chase, John, Kyle, Tanielu, Chris, Mike, Cody, Sierra. Good hustle. A lot of good plays defensively on the press. But also a lot of learning. That's one good thing about playing quality teams like Kapolei. You make mistakes and you have a chance to learn, correct and do the right thing the next time.

Getting better every day. That's what we want! The squad did what they could against an older team, especially with us needing four of our 13U to fill in. Roosevelt has conditioning every night now (Mon-Fri). Don't take the losses too hard. Learn from mistakes, stop repeating them. You know what they are, so practice on your own and practice with the team. But if you don't work on your weaknesses, why are you even playing this sport?

It's all about getting better every day. You can do it.

Schedule - Updated Wed night

This adds Saturday's 17U (NJB) game. It's a good time to be a Thunder baller!

Update, 10:00 pm — We have a Thursday night game, just found out from PAA tonight. The e-mail that PAA sent us on Sept. 7 mentions only a game on 9/12 (Wednesday).

They're trying to squeeze in as many games into a limited number of gyms and gym time. It's not a bad league. But the scheduling communication could be better, obviously.

Thank God it's Monday

When it rains a bit too much, it's time for a photo break

Good workout despite some mist from above on Monday. Some of the old (Cody, John, Kaelen, Chase), some of the new (Micah, Kyle, Walter) and some of the newest (Bill). Also Coach Larry, Coach Roy and Mark (Walter's dad). Oh. And Chakamaru (Walter and Mark's doggie).

We got some shooting drills in before the wind got too gusty. We got some ballhandling drills in — we all need to protect the ball and control our space (rather than get pushed around by defenders). We got some basic offensive footwork in (jab-step drill). And we got a lot of halfcourt man offense work in, which helped Bill a lot. Bill's only 13, but he's always been a naturally, instinctively smart player. He and Kyle (cousins) used to be at our practices three years ago when the Thunder (which started as Sonics) first formed in the KAC league. Those cousins were pretty good for their age back then, still plenty of upside.

It was a fun day. Busy with work, but fun with our Thunder. I just wish more of the Thunder could be there. Alleck (ankle) is still out. Chris and Tanielu stay home and study on Mondays and Tuesdays. Isaiah has Manoa league (Mon/Wed/Fri nights). Mike has conditioning at Kalani most afternoons.

13U wins again

Great job by 13U today, nice win over Makakilo at beautiful McKinley gym. Our starters and new players off the bench worked together real good. Today's lineup: Tanielu, Kyle, Chris, Sierra, Micah, Walter, Kamakani, Bill.

That's two wins in two days. 13U defeated Santos on Saturday. Having depth and good teamwork makes a major difference. I hope this team sticks together and makes a title run. We're still missing Jerson, Pilly and more players, but we've got plenty with this group of ballers.

17U game today didn't happen. The other team, Hawaiian Punch, didn't show up on time, so the game was a forfeit win for us. They showed up late from another league (Ikaika), so we scrimmaged. Before that, our guys got 30 minutes of shooting practice indoors (Palolo gym), which was a treat. Lineup was Chase, John, Cody, Mike, Tanielu, Chris, Kyle, Sierra, Kaelen.

As long as we're short-handed in 17U, our younger players will fill in, and I'm glad they're willing to help. They know the new plays (everything from 45 to McDouble) and play hard, just as hard as the older Thunder. 17U is always for our 17U - the guys who are 16, 17, as long as they show up.

It is definitely a good time to be 12 or 13. You get to play 13U and 15U games, and when 17U is short on numbers, even more games. Next 17U game is Wednesday and I'm hoping we get our full 17U lineup there.

BIG MAHALOS
Thank you to Mark (Walter's dad) for buying everyone chocolate-dipped cones at McDonald's today.

Thank you to the Ogoshis (Chase's parents Roland and Dora) for bringing cookies and cold drinks to games this weekend.

Thank you to Eric (Sierra's dad) for always shooting video, transporting the boys and bringing Sierra to every game and practice possible despite one of the most hectic schedules of any of the Thunder players.

It was a fun weekend!

15U, another Ironman 6

15U - We barely had enough to start the game, 6 players (like 17U earlier). For awhile, I thought we might have to forfeit, but Kyle, Tanielu and Chris got there with Coach Roy 3 minutes before game time (after church). Sierra, Brent and Felix got to Kilauea gym much earlier.

We played smart, fast. Mostly. There were some bugaboos, but overall solid game for a win against Santos. (Yeah, that's their team name. Kyle's old team.) They were pretty young, like us. Our hustle and defense were there. What a strange day. Barely enough players. One team gets whooped good. The other wins big. Now I'm off to work.

Tomorrow: 13U vs. Makakilo, 10:20 am, McKinley gym. Meet 9:20. Then 17U plays 4:00 pm, Palolo gym. All hands on deck!

200 shots a day

Good effort, guys. With just 6, our 17U needed to play smart and play well - John, Mike, Chase, Cody, Brent and Felix. We did some things smart and well, but not enough. OTB has a lot of kids who work hard every day and it shows out there. But I liked our effort. If this is how it is the rest of the fall, playing with just 6 guys, we have to get in better shape. Playing smarter comes with practice, so it's really up to you. I hope you want it because we can beat good teams if we put in the time and the sweat.

Next up, 15U plays at 1:40, Kilauea gym. Double duty for Brent and Felix!

MAHALO to Ron and Dora for bringing refreshments on ice. Awesome!

Saturday morning

GAME DAY: Saturday, 10 am, 17U, Palama gym. 1:40 pm, 15U, Kilauea gym.

Then Sunday, 10:40 am, 13U, McKinley gym. 4:00 pm, 17U, Palolo gym. Yes, Palolo.

Wednesday, 7:45 pm, 17U, Kilauea gym.

Lub this game!

If you need a ride, let me know soon as possible, 551-1054.

Laboring on Monday?

I say enjoy the holiday, kids. I've got a load of work to do from my home office on Mondays, but I'll be done by 4 pm. So if you want to shoot baskets, I'll be at Makiki Park by 4:30 pm. Shoot, shoot, shoot. Maybe some ballhandling drills or even a scrimmage if we have enough people.

But if you've got family gatherings, go enjoy your family. Life is short, enjoy the people you love every chance you get.

Today (Sunday), we had a nice day at the park, guys (and girl) stopped in for casual shooting work. Walter, Jared (wearing his football pants), then Tanielu, Chris and Sierra (and Coach Eric) later on. Josh (Alexander) was there playing pick ball and he plans to practice and play with us in 17U. He hasn't had a ride for our earlier 17U games, so we'll stay in touch and help him out.

Note: Still waiting on the NJB All-Net and PAA 17U schedules for this week. CAL 13U and 15U schedules are in the previous post (below).

Note #2: CAL League confirmed that our game next Saturday (Sept 8) will be at 1:40 pm instead of an earlier time. That's good news since Kyle (and Coach Roy) are busy on Saturdays until afternoon.

Sunday shooters

Sorry for the delayed post. It's been busy with work lately. We got in a good workout Saturday morning, 10 am, with Chase, Cody, John, Brent, Sierra, Bryson, Walter (briefly) and Mick. Just some halfcourt ball for about an hour. Then pizza. I need to lay off the pizza. This is the most pizza-eatingest year of my life. With so little exercise.

But I'm glad our guys met up. We need to play together as much as possible. It translates to the court when we have games. No substitute for chemistry.

Plan is for a shooting practice today (Sunday), 3 pm, but I didn't get the word out to everybody. So if you're not doing much, come down to Makiki Park. The shower will pass. The court will dry.
