Good workout

Wow, that was a surprise. We had 13 players at practice this afternoon, mostly new faces from Roosevelt and a couple of new guys from Maryknoll. I see some talent for sure, but more importantly, I see a LOT of great potential based on athleticism and attitude. It's really refreshing to see. Just guys who love the game of basketball and are willing to put in the work on their fundamentals to improve.

The math is basic. Repetition leads to success. The more repetition, the more rapid the rate of improvement. Now, we didn't spend all practice on individual basics. We did enough on shooting and ballhanding, then went over (quickly) some of our defenses plus transition offense. One practice a week isn't really going to accelerate our growth as a team, especially with so many new players, so I'm looking at the possibility of practicing during the week two or three times. Most of the team is not playing spring sports, so it's worth consideration.

Not everyone today received all the parental waiver forms needed for the Aiea tournament and NJB All-Net League, so I'm posting those forms here. Please download and fill out only the pages that require player information and parental signature.

I'll figure out practice days by tomorrow and post them here, and call everyone with the info, too. It was great to meet the new guys today. The future is bright!

Quick Update: Spring tourney, league(s)

First, a reminder that we have practice on Sunday (today) at 3 p.m., Kahala Park.

OK, guys, I apologize that I didn't find this info sooner, but I have been smashed with work and a little bit sick recently. Much better now, though.

Here's info sent by the folks who run the Aiea Blazers Basketball Tournament and the NJB All-Net League. First, the Aiea tourney.

Aiea Blazers Spring Basketball Tournament
Division: 15-under
Thursday, March 27 to Sunday, April 3, 2011
Aiea District Park Gym (next to Aiea High School)
Entry Fee: $250
Fee Deadline: March 1
Tournament Director: Rob Godinez III
Notes: There is a list of rules I'll print out for our team to read. Includes: no dunking during pre-game or halftime.

NJB All-Net Basketball League
Divisions: 11U, 13U, 15U, 17U (eligibility date as of 9/1/2011)
Age Verification: Coaches must have on their person at the games proof the player's age. This means you must bring a copy of your birth certificate to me to hold for the entire season or they will not let you play.
April 1 to May 29, 2011
Entry Fee: $450
All paperwork due to NJB by March 12, 2011
Notes: No player can play in more than one division (age group). I know that's a bummer for some of our sophomores, but that's the rule. We can still practice together, which is probably the better advantage — still going up against older, smarter, stronger, faster players. The league has reserved a spot in the 15U division for us. I have requested that the allow us into the 17U division, too, now that we've gotten interest from older players. I hope to find out about the 17U soon.

Also, we're on the wait list for the Ikaika Basketball League (12th-grade and under). They had their organizational meeting already, after I found that we had some nice interest from the older players. If this were summer, it would be easier to have more than one team, but for now, I'm willing to give our players every chance to play in leagues, and then see where things go from there. In a way, it would be cool to get into Ikaika so that our NJB All-Net 15U players could play on a second team with older teammates and competition. If we got into both NJB All-Net 17U and Ikaika 12th-grade league, it's a win-win for our younger and older players. I've never coached three teams at once before, so it would be a cool first.

There are registration/waiver forms for each player to fill out, and I'll have those printed out for parents. It's humbug, but a necessity for any quality league or tournament. I've run leagues (men's) and tournaments (men's) before and it's no fun on that side of it, too. We're just blessed to have a chance to play in great events and leagues. There are kids in some parts of this state who don't get this kind of opportunity.

Finally, I am handling the costs for entry fees and jerseys. It's my give-back for all the times coaches helped me as a poor kid growing up in McCully-Mo'ili'ili. I owe them an immeasurable amount. Coach Dwight Kaai. Coach Dwight Sato. Coach Miles Ogawa and Tom Costain at Kaimuki High School. Coach Pat Foster, who helped us out even though he wasn't a basketball coach.

Of course, if there's time, we might have a fundraiser and do something fun at the end of the season like Dave & Buster's or whatever the guys want. A party to have fun, watch game videos and just chill out. It'll be more fun if we score 80 points a game, but we can talk about that later.

Speaking of later ...

This summer, we'll be in the great Compete & Learn (CAL) League again, the same one from last fall at McKinley. Love that shot clock! Also, I'll be looking into travel opportunities, possibly to the Big Island for the Kona Stingrays Tournament. Coach Bobbie and Donny are old, old friends of mine (I used to work/live there). We used to run the men's league together back before they were coaches.

As for traveling to the mainland, I would love it, but only if everybody is on board, no pun intended. If you guys want to play on the mainland, speak up, let me know, and we can explore the possibilities.

Aloha,
Coach Paul

First Practice: Sunday, Feb. 27, 3 pm

Thunder practice Sunday, 3 p.m. at Kahala Park. Time to get organized for the upcoming tournament and league. If we have enough interest, we may enter the 12th-grade division of the Ikaika League. Other than that, it's the Aiea Blazers 15-under tourney and the NJB All-Net League.

Drop me a line, let me know if you're going to play hoops or not this spring. I'm ordering new uniforms tomorrow. If I don't hear from everybody, they won't get their favorite number.

Note: Wishing Blake, Randon and Eliet the best as they continue to work out with Coach Tes. They're planning on entering their team in upcoming leagues, so I'm looking forward to seeing their success. Some truly talented eighth graders that I was happy to coach and hang out with on the basketball court last fall. Best wishes, guys!

For the rest of us, it's time lace those shoes up and get to work. I LOVE THIS GAME.

Update, Sunday, 12:23 am
Looks more and more like we'll have more than one team this spring. Not everything is set just yet, but there's some nice interest from players who are juniors, so we may have a Thunder 17-under team for the first time, along with our 15-under team. (That should make Karl and Kerl happy.) The new guys are from all over the island, so get pumped, Thunder. You've got some new b-ball friends on the way.

What could make this extra interesting is that practices will be at a higher level in so many ways with older players.

I'm finalizing jersey sizes and numbers, so tell me what you want at practice today, 3 p.m.

Practice: Sun Feb 27

Aloha everybody. Thunder basketball is back and we're getting ready for the spring season.

• Aiea tournament during spring break
• NJB All-Net league

If there's enough interest, we may also join the Ikaika12th-grade/under league.

First Thunder practice is Sunday, Feb. 17, 3 p.m. at Kahala Park.
After that, I'll get your feedback for a practice schedule that works best for everybody. I'm leaning toward Sundays and Mondays.

Please let me know if your child will be playing for the Thunder ASAP. I am ordering uniforms tomorrow. If I don't hear from you, I won't know what number your son will want to wear. Then I'll start looking for new players to fill the roster. As always, everyone is welcome to practice and enjoy the fellowship of this great game. All I ask is consistent willingness to work hard and improve.

Hope to hear from everyone soon.

We're having a shootaround at Kahala right now. Keanu, Cody, Kerl and Carl made it today.

Mahalo,

Back to the hardwood/hardcourt

What's up, Thunder? Spring break tournament and NJB All-Net League are around the corner, so let's start up again. Shootaround on Sunday, Feb. 20, 3-5 p.m. at Kahala Park. Everybody is welcome. No guarantees about who's going to be on the team. We'll see who turns out and who's going to be committed to play.

Emphasis in the spring will be on fundamentals and playing at high tempo. Example: Transition quickness (passing and dribbling, decision making) and quick release on shooting — eliminating the slow windup that ends up being a defended shot or non-shot. Simple things that will make us all better individually and as a team.

See you on Sunday!
